Miguel Zenón feat. Spektral Quartet: Tiny Desk Concert

- Jan. 4, 2019 | Felix Contreras -- Saxophonist Miguel Zenón is a big thinker - that much is clear from his recorded output, with its deep and inspiring connection to the folk traditions of his native Puerto Rico. But you also get that sense from his turn behind the Tiny Desk, where we can watch the concentration on his face and those of his adventurous band, the Spektral Quartet. This is life-affirming music with curious twists and turns, expertly performed by amazingly talented musicians.
There are two ways to marvel at the stunning unison playing that comes about three-quarters of the way through "Milagrosa." First, listen with your eyes closed. The notes cascade at a such a fast clip, it can leave you breathless. Now, watch with your eyes open: It's a joy to see Zenón and his band read the notes from the page, at times sneaking in visual cues with smiles just below the surface. It must be such a pleasure to make music like this.

this is so damn good.
Adam, you should make a Video on this. It would be excellent.
its one of a kind
For REAL dude
How coincidental Mr Neely. I went to a gig tonight and recommended to a friend of mine two things on the Internet... one was Tiny Desk in its entirety, and the other was your channel. Then I see Zenon is here (wow) and you are the top comment. I am vindicated.
You're jive
Absolutely jaw dropping. His Puerto Rican flag shirt got me to click, but those amazing lines and unison off beat accents got me sayin “whoa whoa whoa!!!” 🔥🔥🔥🔥💥
wzrd1122 same here! 👏🏽
Oh goodness the way Miguel's tone blends perfectly with that of the strings is just fabulous! Out of this world set, and that riff starting at 10:19 stellar!!
Puerto Rico: Rich in culture, Rich in talent, Rich in blending music with traditions. I loved this set! :)
Totally agree. Yet, reggaeton is all you hear...
@@iMoMeNtuM77 hopefully more sets like this one will keep increasing exposure to younger ears...
these musician's sense of time is insane.
The third piece almost moved me to tears. I was reminded of my childhood and nights staying up with my father enjoying classical music and writing stories while he read.
The third piece DID move me to tears. The song title makes an allusion to my hometown in PR (Villalba), and being so many years away from it, it just filled me with nostalgia and beautiful memories.
And once again, any time anything even slightly dissonant or boundary pushing finds its way to the Tiny Desk, the comments section throws a fit. Excellent performance.
This performance is soo good. As for the commenters, I think there's various paths do getting into this type of stuff amd people who have only listened to more traditional, consonant stuff haven't really embarked on that yet (idk if I would have liked Zenón 6 years ago even though I really like him now). I think people's ears have to make slower strides in getting familiarized with dissonance so if you just hit some 50 year old over the head with something like this then you're gonna get thise annoying comments ("this isn't music" "mental masturbation" "all brain no heart" etc etc)

Classical country and rock and roll tends to happy ( I love you ) or sad ( I miss you ) music that is dissonant and unresolved makes people feel uncomfortable so they reject it. Ironically life is often not completely happy or sad it’s a complex mix ( I love my wife but we are butting heads at the moment ) ( I love my son but he is in a season of rebellion) . In my view music like this reflects the reality of life.
What are you talking about?? The comments section is overwhelmingly positive, please don't unfairly dismiss the tiny desk audience
Miguel Zenón didn't have to go this hard. He did that for us.
It’s complex and interesting. A cross pollination of Jazz, classical and avant- garde.
this music is so magic and misterious. and the musicians are unbelievably good. a true blessing
RePResentando! 🇵🇷🎉❤️
Alexander Rodriguez still haven’t heard from my uncle
Nobody has commented in 4 years, and this is my favorite piece of music.

When your late for work
lmfao u funny af
Suspenseful with just a touch of abstract, my favorite! BIG UPS PUERTO RICO!! 🇵🇷
This is unbelievable and if you can't hear that... expose yourself to more music.
You could be exposed to more music and still not find this "unbelievable".
Not expected but definitely appreciated! (All I hear are awesome samples)
Um pouco Vila Lobos, um pouco Stravinsky. Wonder! From Brazil, always conected.
This is so weirdly beautiful!!
Not at all! Wtf?
Woah it was meant as a compliment weirdness is not looked down upon.@@misstheocean79
We think of "groove playing" to be the provence of jazz, rock, blues, and funk players but listen to this string quartet! Their rhythm dances and sparkles while Miguel's sax dives and dips, in and out, like a firefly. And he can blend like another viola. This music is wonderous with so much technique and heart!
Tiny desk always be dropping bombs when I’m doing something now I got to watch it 😂
why not do both at the same time? you just need your ears for good music :)
Ponch Ambrosio true but I like watching it lol
What epic and multidimensional works. The dizzying counterpuntal melodies to the more thematic moments with very interesting themes as well as bombastic accompanying harmonies with pounding rhythms or more somber and elongated passages. Some of the most interesting pieces of chamber music I've ever heard. Well done!
Crazy GOOD!!!!
BELLÏSIMO!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Gracias por compartirlo!!!!!!!!!
This is so gorgeous, absolutely love this music
This is excellent! Proper musicians doing amazing things. Love it.
Did I just hear that?! I did! Indeed!
Thumbs down for click baiting me on the desk, it's not that tiny.
Keep up the great work!
Ay dios!!!! Que sabor!!!
Sounds beautiful and intense. Beautiful blend indeed!
His tone is very unique. Can’t really decide if I like it or not.
Chills throughout the entire thing ...had me gripped like a powerful storyline
That was freaking awesome !
The composer , I don’t know what he’s being paid, but he needs a raise.

Maestro Miguel Zenón!
WOW. This is exceptional.
Wow! This is what real musicians can do. Unbelievable...
Came for the sax but these arrangements!! Ho-Lee-Sheet! 🔥🔥🔥
So COOL!
This is beautifully challenging and then perfectly simple.
Sunday morning. It’s raining, I’m sleepy. Cup of coffee, poetry, mundane and deep concerns at once. This is perfect. Thank you npr.
its so refreshing to hear new arrangements and phrasing .. the same "jazzy" riffs and cliches get old .. something I struggle with... this gave me perspective and inspire me to open up more my playing
Listening to this makes me feel like my life is a Disney movie.
Fresh and inspiring!
F A N T A S T I C ! :) Great art is personal. And limitless

These strings should blend nicely with my night terrors.

That was beautiful, I made a movie in my mind off of this...lol

FabulouS MuSiCiaNS💖🎻🎵🎶🎵🎶Tk Y⛅U🌷🍃
¡PueLtorro! 💙🇵🇷❤️
Nice!
where are the groove and the solos ?
It’d be great to see Jeff Beck perform on this program! He’s one of the greatest guitarists of all time, and his live albums have some of the best music I’ve ever heard. It’d be nice if the youngsters of today listened to some progressive rock/jazz fusion.
A very dark classical tone coming from the sax 🎷
Wow...... Nice work... awesome.🎹👌🎸🎷🎻Like👇
Would you mind to elaborate what exactly you “like” about it?
Very nice
this would sound sick with electric guitars and some hectic distortion and double kick blastbeats
Wow
1940'S 'BEBOP' mixed with orchestral JAZZ on strings. GREAT.😊😊😊
Wow it must take some serious practice to play these instruments do yall see how fast their fingers are moving on those violins
I'd like to learn some more of this. Anyone?
One day, One day, i'ma have me a Tiny Desk Concert lol
