  • This video is all about the daily routine of our Bullmastiff puppy Tua during the week. When he eats, exercises, spends time in his crate, trains, plays, etc. And how we do things. He is 17 weeks old in this video
This channel was created to track the life of our Bullmastiff Tua.
Weekly videos will be posted to show not only his physical growth, but his behavioral changes, obedience level changes, and our overall experience with the Bullmastiff breed.
This will hopefully help anyone interested in the Bullmastiff breed by showing what to expect at very specific times all throughout a Bullmastiff's life!
Although this will be more specifically about the Bullmastiff breed, the videos should give a very general idea about what to expect at certain ages of many different dog breeds.

Sweet dog, i had a bullmastiff pet. He just passed away last July 5...he was a gentle giant who kept us safe and made our family whole. Still grieving of our loss and by watching your videos made me feel a bit better.

So sorry to hear that. We lost our dog before Tua, Kobe, a couple years back unexpectedly. He was a doberman pinscher. Still think about him a lot. Really sucks losing a dog.
How old did your bullmastiff live to?

My Bullmastiff slept with me. He was so snuggly! And he loved people. He'd wait for them at the fence when I told him who was on their way over. He knew my friends by name. Everybody from the plumber to the kid next door loved him. I think people came over to see Louie more than to see me. These are one of the most loving dogs I've ever met. (I watched the whole video).

Thanks for the video. I have a beautiful Bullmatiff rescue. We take her out a lot, everywhere we go everyone falls in love with her. When I first took her to Dog Club the senior trainer told her class; "This is a Bullmastiff, if you haven't owned a Bullmastiff you haven't lived." One thing I don't get; many Americans have a cage inside for their dog, in South Africa this is unheard of. Some people don't allow their dogs in the house, like most people our dog lives in our house with us. She is outside most of the day, after toilet and dinner she is allowed in and can stay inside until the next morning, she has her own bed and she never gets on the furniture or beds. When we go out she stays outside, we have a temperate climate and we hardly ever go out after dark.

Crates are pretty common when dogs are younger. They can be a great house training tool and when dogs are teething and you can't be home they are life savers. Now that Tua is older, it's pretty rare that we ever put him in there but sometimes he will go lay in there for a nap

I own a 7 year old English Mastiff. He’s 150# and 30” tall. He is the easiest dog I’ve ever owned. I’ve had a variety of breeds over the years. German Shepard, Golden Retriever, a Rottie and also a Boxer. The Boxer was a handful until about 4 years old. The daily walks really helped to keep his mischievous side to a minimum. I still loved him immensely. I’m older and retired now and though I take my Mastiff on walks he doesn’t require all that much exercise to stay fit and trim. I can tell you are going to have a great dog as he get to full size. My son also has a brindle Mastiff and I see him regularly, I’m clearly his second favorite person.

Great looking pup, we are using the same dog food, it’s great. We feed 3 times a day. She is at 4 cups right now and we go one cup for breakfast, two cups at lunch and one cup at dinner. That ratio and times seems best for her being able to not feel constantly hungry and it helps her hold her bowels in the crate since her last feeding wasn’t as big.

I to just lost mine male at 13 years last week. All I can say is enjoy every day with him as there on this earth for such a very short time. I wish you a long & healthy life with yours. Keep his ears very clean, I used a Q tip and alcohol to get in every corner to remove wax & oil and feel between his toes & pads every day for crud, sand, dirt and other unwanted debris that always seems to gets in there.

@@bullmastiffnd9784 Oh he will get up there lol. You'll come home and he'll be passed out and good luck moving him when that happenslol. I did the furnature in steps. As a puppy they could come up but only next to me, and they had to earn it (sit stay speak etc) as an adolescent they could come up but only if I say so. As an adult it's free reign. I grew up not having animals on the couch and all that. But once I had my own dog, especially a mastiff, there's no better couch buddy. When he gets to about 1-1.5 years he will want up just to give you a hug and melt back onto the floor or just watch TV and fall asleep on you lol. When he gets older invest in a big barker bed. His joints will love you for it.

This video reminded me of ours as puppies. Our current BM (Wrex) just turned 4 in July. We had to get a smaller dog after Buttercup had to be put to sleep (also a BM) in Dec, her and her previous brother Fezzik(BM), had only just turned 7 when we had to say goodbye. So we have a Boston Terrier Edi, who keeps Wrex busy (hubby has some health restrictions which prevents him from being able to handle a large dog). So similar to you with a large dog and a small dog. We have used crates for all our pups, its their house/safe place. Shoot Buttercup would just go in her kennel when she saw me putting my socks on in the morning as I got ready for work. Keep their ears clean, give it a good sniff once a week and keep ahead of any infections (common due to the floopy ears), and make sure to keep their facial folds/wrinkles clean (which it looks like you do bc you clean his face after eating/drinking). Making them wait for the food is good, we have them sit, while we're dishing it, and then have them "wait" an arbitrary amount of time, before "ok" for eating, bc yes having the 120+ lb dog all over you while you're trying to put the dish down is problematic.
Also I love the dog dish holder you have =) I have suggested that to my husband. While we've never had issues with our BM's food dish on the ground, we do watch to make sure they don't have any issues.
Anyways, he's perfect =) and brings back great memories of ours, so thank you, bc we can't go back in time.

Take the collar off in the cage. If that gets caught and the dog gets scared he will tangle up in that. It just happened to my dog during our Town's Christmas emergency vehicle parade. When we were all watching the parade the dog was home strangling himself. Fortunately he made it out okay but you don't want to know about the vet bill.
The funny thing is we have not closed that door to the cage in over a year, he likes it in there. It was gone the next day.

    @kayceegreer4418 Před 2 lety

He's an especially goodlookin' Bullmastiff . . . And, yes, I stuck around for the whole thing, and liked to learning about life with a Bullmastiff. ¿QUESTIONS?( after a short preamble): I have always free fed all of my dogs, large and small, giving them the opportunity to eat as much as they want or as little as they want, even if I had a pack. I oversaw them to make sure everybody got a turn at the one, large Community bowl that was never left empty for long. All of my dogs self-regulated whether they were my solo dog, or if I had a pack . . . so here's the ¿QUESTION?: do Bullmastiffs have the mentality of just being a food pig like Pugs are known to be/do, and just eat and eat as if there's no other purpose for their existence? I am aware that large breeds need to grow slow because of growth plates... etcetera ad infinitum... on that subjec, but my Boxer, and GSD × Songshi Quan [chow-chow is a derogatory term, but it stuck and got capitalized], APBT × Mastiff, ate what they needed for the moment and left the bowl. There was never any competitive eating or food guarding because of my "we share" policy.
NEXT QUESTION/S Prequel: My dogs always slim down in the summer and beefed-up for winter on free-feeding. Puppies always ate their fill and rested and pooped later, i always crate train on the clock method 1 hr/then increasing, etc ; never had a problem with the "potty outside". I even said "pee pee" and "poo poo" to capture the behaviors as they did it, so they learned it as a command so that even in the rain when I said outside I could say the "mandate" even in the rain or thunderstorm, they'll go do the deed. They also learn "eat food" and "drink water" so that when they are sick, I can know just how sick they may be, and whether I need to call the vet. Capturing behaviors, as they're toddling around as puppies [down, sit, rest/chill/wait/, stay was my nonchalant goodbye along with the words "and be a good doggy/good doggies", stand, "to me" - cuz i dont want my dogs "come"-ing to just anybody, etc] was the easiest method training I ever learned, besides not letting them get 1 inch into a behavior that going to create a monster later, including "we share", which is my no bullying policy for the yummy chew toys [ bully bones, ox & beef bones, smoked pig ears, buffalo horns, that I leave strewn in every room so that dogs never chew anything they're not supposed to have.
¿NEXT QUESTION/S: will this all work with a Bullmastiff? I've heard they can be quite stubborn but is that the people and the way they train? Do they unwittingly spoil their dog and let them get away with stuff? Some people give their dogs attention that dogs perceive as praise and confirmation that the bad behavior is the thing to do, so when you're out on a walk with your Bullmastiff and the dog parks it, and you're not even halfway home yet... is it because they are like a mule will quit work because he knows he needs to take a rest for self-preservation? ...is it likely a pinched nares problem because of the breeding genetics breathing dilemma of many brachycephalics, or because they are a self ruling brat aka independent and bullheaded breed? Your boy doesn't seem like he would have those particular problems of mindset. Y'all have a good cooperation going. Kudos!

@@kayceegreer4418 Regarding free feeding. I have personally never done it before so I don't really have much to say about if it is good or bad. I'm neutral on it. I feel like if it works for you and your dog, have at it, and if it doesn't then don't. However everything that I have read about the bullmastiff breed and including what my breeder told me is that you should never free feed a bullmastiff.
They can have that "mindless eater" mentality. Bloat can be an issue with these dogs and an extremely full belly is asking for problems.
Not only that but you don't want to put weight on them too quickly as they are growing and in their older years you don't want them to become overweight to put excess stress on the joints. I get the vibe from Tua that he would be a mindless eater if I let him. Just wouldn't stop😂
      Your next question.
I am a very experienced dog owner but Tua is my first Bullmastiff. In my experience with him he has done everything that I have asked him to do with relative ease as far as training goes. I'm not expecting him to win any obedience contests or anything like that but with basic commands he has always caught on extremely fast. I've been impressed.
My dog before him was a doberman pinscher. Super intelligent and super easy to train and I would say Tua has been almost as easy to train if not identical in most aspects. I do notice some stubbornness but nothing crazy out of the ordinary that sticks out to me. Like you said it is about how you train the dog in most cases. But I'm not asking him to be an extremely well trained dog in every aspect of obedience. I just care about him being more well-behaved and listening when I want him to.
As far as quitting on a walk or something like that. I have not noticed that happening at all with him yet. The farthest I go with him on walks is usually a couple of miles and even on very hot days he has always kept up. Maybe just slow down a little, but never stopped and refused to walk or anything like that. Possibly when he gets older he might? Time will tell
I hope that answers what you were asking.
Check out all my videos if you're interested in getting one. I update my experience with him weekly every Sunday. You can see how he progresses week to week and what my thoughts are.
