      My rottie was a chewer/biter.
I wash pressure cleaning the concrete and the washer stopped.
I walked back round to find her with washer cord chewed in half and she was sitting there stunned.
      She tripped the circuit breaker.
She did not chew anything ever again.

    Interesting Video!
I have a 2.5 year old Rott that I adopted from a Rott rescue here in NorCal. This rescue is very impressive since they train Rotts for authorities as well as provide these great dogs to families.
When I got her I was impressed that she knew all the basic commands, was great on the leash ( no pulling at all), and listens well. Also, she plays well with other dogs and is just a love bug and a great companion! However, when she gets in a playful, spazzy mood she gets mouthy. Typically, I do correct this behavior when she is too much by saying no, and if she bites I'll act like she's hurting me and she licks my hand and stops. It's not a major concern, however, if I throw a party and have many guests I can imagine her getting excited and mouthy!...LOL. Again, she's a big love bug but she has that puppy mentality and at times doesn't know her own strength and gets too rough.
I adopted her at 2 years old and am thinking she was never trained about being too mouthy. However, I know long time Rotty owners that have said they are mouthy until 3 years old?
Anyway. I would appreciate some suggestions.
    Thanks!😀👍

If biting ever gets out of hand and I have exhausted the command to stop biting, and given him alternative options to chew and he still won’t stop, what do you recommend? Does it mean that my relationship is broken, and how do I fix it?

    • @ltpdogtrainingNJ
      @ltpdogtrainingNJ Před 2 lety +3

I don't know about the status of your relationship with your puppy here, but understand that
      1. when puppies get too tired (especially before nap time) they lose all ability to control themselves, so, 'in the crate s/he goes'. Often the pup falls asleep in minutes.
      2. Pretend to be super-fragile and yell "YIPE!" when puppy bites you or your clothing, then get up & lock yourself in a separate room until puppy sounds settled. Then come out & totally IGNORE puppy. Pretend she doesn't exist, walk through her if she is in your path, if she starts biting you again, yell YIPE! and growl short & grab the top of her muzzle briefly, grab by her scruff, pull her down onto her side until she licks your hand instead of biting.
Best of luck. Exercise is the key. Being the Momma dog is crucial.

Great for puppies.. Good info. How is it different if you have a year old Rotti puppy that has not had training and you are starting with a year old pup that not only play bites but no play -bites your hand when hes guarding food or places.. Its a bit different isnt it?? I adopted this pup and I have a pretty good skill set we train every day. I set boundaries, use his food to train.. We wait before he can eat.. Lots of structure but he surprised me with a bite when we were training at a pet shop.. Too many treats, food toys, etc. Trigger stacking.. He snapped. How do you personally correct that?

When you watch puppies playing and one gets aggressive and snappy, the other(s) will vocalize , stop the play and shun the other puppy (by turning is back or even walking away.
    This is the pack mentality.
When my dog was a (very nippy) pup, I would say “No biting” in a strong loud voice and then ignore him..totally.

One thing id love to ask is though. When i tell him no! Say for biting cusions on the couch and i mean literally the cusions is the main issue he will become very mouthy and almost challenge me. How would you deal with this? He is cutting his big teeth in, so i assumed it may be down to this and may pass. He is a great dog on lead / off lead also recall is brilliant. We’ve always had big dogs, mastiff, GS, rotties but have only ever had one, the current pup, as young as eight weeks. We have always used your approach and have never had an issue with a dog. Well rounded, balanced temperament. I was tending to address this pups biting the same way however 1) the biting is way more than we’re used to and 2) I’ve recently watched another video advising it’s important to “allow” and inform the pup it’s hurting you so the pup learns “bite inhibition”. The danger in not letting pup learn this is apparently that the pup will lose the ability to learn to lessen it’s bite force as it reaches 6 months of age and then we could have trouble. What are your thoughts on this way of thinking?

Lovely video .. I have a rottie who has just turned five months ... Very loving , understanding, a handsome baby and of course extremely naughty ...It's true ... For stuff around the house , the more you say No , he sort of challenges u n clamps his mouth shut on the object and runs wanting us to chase him . I guess all this will improve as they mature . My only problem is , just sometimes he starts biting ..like say when I tell him I shall get him his food n he waits and I walk in empty handed for a moment , he starts biting my hands n legs ... It's not too soft not too hard ..nevertheless because of their bite force it hurts ...he understands later , makes big sorry eyes and licks me all over but how do I stop the biting before it gets too late ? Or will that pass off as well as he grows ...

Please if anyone has any information on how I can stop it and let him know that he’s not the boss that would be much appreciated as I don’t want this to turn into an issue in the future. Scruff behind the neck, grab it and give it a shake like mothers do. It doesn't hurt them it's just unconfortable. It's a rottweiler, you need to show him you're the Alpha, this video is quite good assuming you're already seen as a leader by your dog.

Every time it bites you, you say AAAUU and walk away. When it calms down you go back to him/ her and praise it. It will associate you ignoring it with it‘s bad behavior, and him/her being calm with your attention and affection. Always stand tall, firm voice and send leader vibes without aggression. Good luck

Something that worked for me was yelping like it really hurt, and ignoring the puppy for a few seconds. Puppies want to play, so anything that stops that is bad.
Not applicable to older dogs. Bribery seems to work best after about 6 months of age. Popcorn, or bits of hamburgers, or whatever.
