  • SCREAMING...GRIT...RASP... these are all terms referring to the same thing-Vocal Distortion. When I first started studying voice, distortion was considered bad for your voice. Singers who used distortion would end up with nodules, or hoarse, or losing their voice completely...or so it was believed.
I myself have been screaming since the 80s, loving to sing along to bands like AC/DC. But I didn't actually start teaching how to create distorted tones until around 2000, four years after I began teaching voice. I was starting to hear more singers being into bands like Sevendust, Alice In Chains, and soon after bands like Disturbed and Slipknot.
I knew I needed to teach singers how to do this correctly. That is exactly why I created the Extreme Scream programs and why we fully explore Rasp° as a Color° of the voice at colorsofyourvoice.com.
Beware, I did not follow the trend of creating 100 vocal terms to explain all the different types of screams. I've never use terms like "sub glottal pressure" or "arytenoid rattle" or "false fold" to get sounds out of singers.
That is because my philosophy is very simple…Grit is Grit is Grit...Rasp is Rasp is Rasp. All distorted sounds start from the same solid technique. You don't need to compartmentalize every scream that you hear. You just need to understand the basic mechanics and learn to feel that distortion rumbling in the roof of your mouth.
If you're still worried that vocal distortion could hurt your voice, you need to watch this video.
