New Valve Cover from 1AAuto.com 1aau.to/ia/1AEVC00046
Under the valve cover, you have camshafts and the valvetrain spinning and flinging oil everywhere. A valve cover has to have a gasket to stop some of that oil from leaking out the seam. When you do see oil around your valve cover, you know it’s time to replace the gasket. This video shows you how to install a new valve cover gasket in your 2007-12 BMW X3.

I’ve done this job twice. This video makes it super easy. The valve cover bolts use a different type of socket from the norm. Make sure you get those. You are likely going to want to replace the cabin air filter while doing this. I would also recommend replacing the ignition coils and plugs at the same time. I used multiple bungees to tie back everything so it was out of the way when I placed the new valve cover. Most importantly, don’t buy a cheap valve cover. The first time I did this, I bought a cheap $150 valve cover. Within 6 months, it warped and started leaking again. If you read some of the links out there, you will find that is common.

This video was exactly what I needed to replace my valve cover gasket and I was able to do my oil cooler and oil filter gasket along with Delphi coils and NGK Platinum plugs. Step by step guidance and saved over $4000 or $8000 from a BMW dealer. Did it in a day and my 2008 BMW X3 3.Osi AWD is running like new. Awesome Video and I'll be looking for more down the road.

Thrilled with most of your videos, I'm a little disappointed with this one that you didn't put the valvetronic motor in service mode to prevent possibly damaging it, releasing the tension that way

Awesome step by step video. I just replaced the gaskets which I purchased as a set for less than $60. BMW dealership wanted over $2K for this job. If you have a basic socket set and a couple of thin screwdrivers you can do this job by following this video and save yourself $$$.

Very good. I spent 35 years in aircraft maint and it is always nice to see a good video. I'm sure you know that to get the proper torque with a torque wrench you have to use the handle for the proper "foot" length in your lb ft. torque.

Those caged studs on the cover, is it ok for them to come out like that? If they do does the entire cover need to be replaced? This question is from around the 9:25 ish mark.

How did the valve cover from 1aa auto do for the car ? Cause I have 08 X3 and I heard that some after market valve cover were no good especially cheaper ones. I literally just had this replaced and I used URO parts valve cover. What you do you think ?

Hi, on my replacement I notice the middle nut of the "3" on my valve cover had an 11 mil nut on it. Obviously it isn't the original. Where can I find that specific nut? I have looked. Also, how does this specific nut seal off from the oil coming out at this spot? Thanks for any information.

I noticed that you didn't put the eccentric shaft motor in service mode or manually back out the worm shaft. If this is not needed then why do other videos show it? Is it just so that the motor doesn't shoot out or pop out like in your video? Does the motor need to be in the same position as when it was removed when you re-install it?

absolutely fantastic filming. Having done this once and getting ready to do it again - all the focus areas are just spot on. Why am I doing it a second time? Because either I folded the gasket or the plastic cover is warped. Buying a new cover this time. I'm at 120k miles, 2009 X3

Terrific video. EXTREMELY helpful. Thank you. Question for you or anyone: at 19:44 you can clearly see a round 'cap' of some sort, upper left corner, with a nozzle protruding toward the right. I found nothing attached to mine, nor do I see anything attached to yours. Is this correct? No hose attaches to it? Not referring to the crankcase vent, just the small (maybe 1/4") hose connection.

Got the job done, all went well, drove around a while, let it idle and things went all to hell. Started bucking, would clear and then blow dense oil smoke. Cleared, then did it again several times. Any thoughts?

I believe he called it "vaccum port cap". I did not find this in my previous cover nor did the new one included it. Been looking on line but can't seem to find it. I wonder if its even necessary. After I finished the job everything worked and performed fine. A few minutes later it started misfiring. I ran the odb2 diagnostics and got these fault codes: P0171 & P0174. Any help is appreciated.

Well.. I ended up taking the car to my mechanic after having the car fail on me. He told me “this gasket cover is garbage”. He did what he could to apply sealant since there was air coming out of everywere but more than likely I would have to replace the cover with a genuine BMW instead.
Great video though; don’t stop making them but the chinese parts- no bueno.
