      Yeah but when you have adult size hands on an itty bitty instrument you can't necessarily play all the notes you could on a full size. I'm willing to bet that the distance between say an A and A# on a 1/16th is a few millimeters. Rather than a toy piano, a piano without the black keys may be a better comparison.

      @ferusskywalker9167 Před 2 lety +182

      Tbh, one of the main reasons that it sounds bad is that the instruments are too small for them, so their finger placement is wrong. It is also probably some fairly cheap instruments as well.

    • @helenwong4230
      @helenwong4230 Před 2 lety +98

      @@ferusskywalker9167 I understand that it is hard to play on a too small instrument as an adult, but I am also referring to the general bad sound quality of smaller instruments. I don't think makers would have made a really good violin in small sizes, yet the prodigies were able to do double harmonics or make high notes sing as we have seen on some previous episodes. I just thought it was an extra challenge when you are not playing on full size.

    • @TheCyanSqueegee
      @TheCyanSqueegee Před 2 lety +52

      @@ferusskywalker9167 There are definitely just acoustic differences even just taking out any fingerings. If you hear them just play open strings the sound is still very tinny and not full at all, as there is much less room for air to resonate inside the instrument. I also agree that these probably aren't "top of the line" small instruments, if such a thing even exists, as that would be a complete waste of money since the child will grow out of it and most children aren't good enough to need a good instrument.

    The video we didn't know we needed. This was so fun to watch!
    0:44 - 4/4 size
    2:30 - 3/4 size
    4:24 - 1/2 size (smooth transition by the way)
    6:03 - 1/4 size
    7:19 - 1/8 size
    8:43 - 1/16 size (also love how Eddy just kinda gave up at the end of the 1/8 section)
    Something writing this comment has made me really think about the fact that 1/2 string instruments are not actually half the size, and the same for every other size. Can any string players explain what the logic is behind the ratios in size of the instruments?
    Sincerely,
    Oscar Gill

      @amedeacatpaw5987 Před rokem +2

      A violin is measured from it’s shoulder, just beside the nose, to the edge by the end pin at the bottom, in inches using a tape measure.
      Full size, or 4/4 on a violin measures 14”
      3/4 - 13”
      1/2 - 12”
      1/4 - 11”
      1/8 - 10”
      1/16 - 8”
      Violas, however, don’t have a ‘standard size’ as such, and anything from 15” - 17” is considered ‘standard’, with 16” being the most common.
      I don’t know how smaller violas work, one of my friends learnt viola on small violins tuned down a fifth, so perhaps that. As a violinist who has only ever had one viola (because my school orchestra has a surplus of violins, and three violas, including me), I’ve never had to play any other violas than my full size one. I’ve never measured it but now I’m curious xD

  • @magdolyn
    @magdolyn Před 2 lety +8

    Huge props to the viola for getting as much projection as she did from that teeny tiny little thing! As Brett and Eddy mentioned in a previous video, there are very few solo opportunities for solo viola, mainly because it's an instrument that doesn't project well at all. It takes SKILLS! Very well done! Color me impressed!

    Even though this exercise was amusing and interesting, the selection of the music was one that forced me recall what the heck it was. Yes, Eddy mentioned it at first, but I scanned around to find the text, and couldn't. Then I listened again to the beginning. Ah!
    Dvořák - String Quartet No. 12 in F major, Op. 96 "American" !!!
    I chastised myself for recognizing the music, but not remembering the name. And I went to the 'Tube to find it, and even using Shazam!
    Eventually I found it in my iTunes anyway, hehehe, and now I want to thank the quartet for reminding me about this luscious bit of music again! It will be an earworm for the next few days.
    SALUT!

      And then after Symphony 7, it led to a thrilling 1923 recording of Hamilton Harty conducting the Hallé Orch in Symphony 9, and then from that I found some interesting new music by Hamilton Hardy:
      Piano Concerto
      An Irish Symphony.
      A word to any detractors of our Brett and Eddy. They have in the last few months led me to both new music and old music that might not have occurred if I had not taken the time to laugh and grin at this different size string quartet.
      And add to them many others who do what some perhaps would consider weird or outlandish takes on music, such as Jacob Collier, and several others.
      THIS IS HOW CLASSICAL MUSIC GROWS.
      WE WANT MORE, Brett and Eddy!

      @@BFDT-4 Yep indeed... I often listen to the full version of pieces they play snatches of, and discover other TwoSetters doing likewise. One interesting evening for me was their 'Matching Classical Music to Famous Artwork' which led me to the Sculpty Works' reacting to it vid. He has a degree in Art and his choices of music were fascinating but then someone in those comments, who has a deep knowledge of music, threw in his opinion and these were more obscure pieces which I also listened to and imagined if they fitted the artwork better... or not. Of course it's all subjective. Next recommended was Sculpty Works' vid where he actually took up Brett & Eddy's challenge of assembling... or rather throwing together... a $60 violin. This was fascinating as he's a luthier and he took great pride in doing a top notch job. So one thing led to another and I wonder why even later nights are becoming the norm! I'm blaming TwoSet!! But it's all educational fun...
