  • In September 1992, KRTV produced an hour long program about the Great Falls stack and the Anaconda Smelter. We showed you this history of the smelter, and took you to the historic day that the stack disappeared from the Great Falls skyline.

Thanks for airing this. That was a sad day in Great Falls history. I grew up with the Stack always on the horizon, and once it was gone -- it wasn't home anymore.

How fantastic to see this show once more and so many wonderful friends, still greatly missed! I miss them as much or more than the stack itself...

I was two years old and I still remember that day. My mom sat me on top of the car on River Dr. W and we watched the demolition.

Sorry i'm a French designer student and i don't understand why this structure was destroyed. Because it was a symbol of the past and we can imagine it was possible to make renovations so why ? Money problem ? Legislation ? Both ? Well, it was a very impressive monument for 1918.

I lived in Great Falls and Black Eagle from 1958 ~ 1963. I was just a young kid. I attended Whittier grade school 4th~ 5th~ 6th grades and then attended West Junior High School. Those years were filled with the Anaconda Smoke Stack. When we could we would sneak onto the Anaconda Golf Course. And when we wanted to play 'I Dare You'... we would sneak up the hill to the stack ! I've stood right outside of it. We would play fox and geese around the base of the stack. The whole country side was our playground. We fished the banks of the Missouri, above and below the Black Eagle Dam. We rode our bikes to play on the white cliff bluffs below the dam. Oh, what fun we had with that Ol' Stack as our constant companion. I was not there when it was blown down. I am glad I wasn't. I would have shed a bucket of tears afterward at Borrie's bar, downing more than just a few. Anyone have a brick they want to sell ?

The lady who said it took the Great out of Great Falls was absolutely right IMO. I moved there in the late 90's. I called the town Notso Great Falls after living there. What a craphole. Anaconda still has their stack. They are glad they kept it. Dumb move to demo it, but that's Great Falls for ya.

The Stack was a nice sight to see on the horizon for a tired airman when driving back from a Minuteman site. It meant that it wouldn't be long before I reached Malmstrom (341st MMS) and then home to my wife on 7th Av N (1972 to 1975).

I remember that day well, the family was heading to Great Falls from Glasgow, we stopped at Big Bear and watched the girl fall. That stack was our sign that we were ending our five hour trek and made it to civilization. Even to this day when driving to Great Falls I still look for that missing sign coming over the horizon.

Huge day for me, a bunch of us kids were being filmed for a "That's Incredible" episode earlier in that day, then we all sat on the roof of my parents house to watch the blast.

I remember this day, I was like "How am I going to make it back to base without the "Prick of the Prairie" to guide my way back" since there were literally no other landmarks to get your bearings. 🙂

Anaconda leaving Great Falls was a result of globalization. These companies are businesses which must make a profit to pay costs as well as revenue to investors and owners. When it becomes more profitable for them to move the operation elsewhere, they will. America no longer has a monopoly on mining, processing and manufacturing. I am not condoning this and wish things could be as they were up until to 1970s, but those days are over everywhere in this country. So sad.
