I grew up holidaying in Salcombe from my birth in 1989 and my extended family still live there. My father used to wake me up when he heard the maroons go off in the middle of the night and would take me down to the boathouse to watch the launch. My grandfather was great friends with Stan Turns and since I was young I’ve wanted to contribute to the RNLI. Annoyingly I work 8 miles (10-15mins) from a station (Cromer) and can’t volunteer as I need to be within 3 miles. Regardless, the RNLI is the most pure and dedicated lifesaving service within the UK and quite probably globally.

13 years before Penlee lifeboat went to a very similar shout and never came back nor did the coasters crew. RIP to the crew of the RNLB Solomon Brown and the crew of the Union Star. It was known as the Penlee Lifeboat Disaster.

I was just thinking the very same thing. coaster , drifting towards rocks , very bad weather , this is so like the shout that destroyed lifeboat Solomon Browne and sadly took the life of the Penlee crew

What is all the more remarkable about the Penlee disaster is that the crew successfully took off 4 people and were going back for the rest in seas 3 times as great…and on a wooden boat with half the speed.

I've loved Salcombe since I had to go there for work 5 years ago. I think this demonstrates how poorly informed much of Britain can be about so much of Britain. Farming communities, coastal villages like this, cities. We all understand so little of how the rest of the country lives it's daily life
