My theory is that the doorman position and the residents of the building aren’t part of an experiment, but the doppelgängers are a real threat for humanity that DDD are trying to get rid of after the experiment got out of hand, you’re interpretation isn’t bad, but I wish you specified there can be other interpretations and this one isn’t a fact, like how you used to

Their enemies would surely know of the entire plan because of the leak, so even if some doppelgangers end up infiltrating,a lot would still die because their enemies would be more careful with who they let in after knowing about the doppelgangers and their abilities.
i was thinking, what if all this doorman thing is just a part of a test? like, both neighbours and fake ones are all doppel, and the test is to see who suceeded and who failed

Something interesting to think about. The hooded guy shows only in nightmare mode, so he could be a delusion of the doorman believing his government caused the problem. In that regard it could be the doorman's twisted hope that the creatures could never take over if the government controls them. Afton is chosen as lead scientist in the dream because doorman is jealous of him having a beautiful fiance. Add all the nightmare guests are all the residents deformed maybe in some way how he feels they are in his mind.
Given how many Mode tags the game seems to have, we'll learn more about the game's lore once the next mode shows up.
This is a little obvious, but I don’t think the D.D.D. Actually kills the doppelgängers, they probably take them Ian to see what’s wrong with them so they can improve them, that’s why it usually gets harder the more you play because they are getting smarter.
The ddd does kill the doppelganger cause if you call in on a real person at the end of normal mode it says neighbors killed

Since this would predate Fred-Bear's Family Diner and Faz-Bear, Dr. Afton is likely William Afton's father. Purplism runs in the Afton family after all. So before the events that led William Afton the Second to found Fred-Bear's, the doppelgangers were a serious threat. Dr. Afton helped combat them before William Afton's birth and by Fall-Fest they were largely eradicated.
Then, as the doppelgangers slowly renewed their numbers, they moved on to Robotics. And creating better Mimics than themselves...
But that's just a theory. 🧐

In regard to either series, it probably doesn’t. Unless Scott Cawthon comes out and confirms a connection, then I think the appearance of Afton and Springtrap are just references to the FNAF series.
I think there is only actually 1 Doppelganger and no one From the DDD that actually comes its just the One Doppelganger disguised as one. The DDD is made up of Doppelgangers who need to feed on humans but doing so in the streets cause too much attention and they need a doorman to reassure people that the building is safe again. They just weren't counting on you, some rando, being soo competent!
It would be interesting to see if there are higher difficulties where it’s as subtle as a slightly different shade of hair colour or slight increase in height to really test players.

Nightmare mode seems to be a difficult mode because some doppelgangers have very little imperfection. Sometimes, I can't even tell until I take a closer look.

Would be neat to have an Ezic ending like in Papers please, where you can ally with the doppelgangers, and its actually a harder mode, having to help in real time perfect their disguise and get their story straight.
But the DDD starts keeping a timer on how long you're interrogating someone, and if you take too long they find out your integrity has been compromised and you're fired (game over)

Good to see the cryptic message deciphered! I hope in future updates we will continue to see more of the lore on the doppelgangers and the government involved in creating them.
This lore is honestly really interesting. It punches above it's weight, with the original game being a somewhat barebones gameplay experience reminiscent of flash games, not meant in a derogatory way. I hope the creator capitalizes on this concept and perhaps makes a full game, released for a price on Steam perhaps, with more polish and proper gameplay, that leans into the "Papers, please" aesthetic and genre, and gives you subtle hints as to the greater lore of the place and what happened.
This game gives me a lot of question. One of which is if Doppelgängers running amok in neighborhood (or say your country), why does everyone live in peace? I mean like Ana goes to school, everyone else does their job, Milkman milking everyone, etc. Isn't the situation chaotic cause everyone distrusts each other? Why is everyone calm and they treat like this is not a serious issue?

Well, I'm going to base a theory off what would have likely happened during part of World War 2 to hopefully explain why the Doppelgängers exist. I'm making the assumption that this game universe is an alternate one to our own universe, (Afton or not), to make some logical conclusions.
First, let me point out Doppelgänger is a German mythical creature/legend in the first place. This is very important to said theory. My guess is it might be the government of the current nation that created the original Doppelgängers, but more likely, the Nazi government that could have existed within that universe, likely being the government to create Doppelgängers in the first place.
In our universe, some people at legit Concentration Camps during the Holocaust were experimented in a variety of horrific ways by various Nazi scientists - literally everything from being used to test how flammable rocket fuel was to changing people's eye color to literally sewing people together. Even lesser-known Nazi doctor, Dr. Hans Aspergers actually kept some prisoners alive to help with his research in math and science (which is why we literally a psychological disorder named after that doctor. He spared prisoners that had certain key traits that would help him with coming up with scientific theories). This was done to be able to advance science and/or help the Nazis potentially take over the world.
The Nazis didn't take over the world in our reality, but some of their scientific advancements ended up helping humanity with quite a few things, like space exploration getting to the point it's at. I'm assuming that Dr. W. Afton for the Secret Letters universe would have been the equal to Dr. Mengele for that universe, likely creating the majority of the Doppelgängers from literal war prisoners that literally did nothing wrong other than be considered a German enemy of the state due to literally being the wrong religion, sexual orientation, and/or race.
It would make sense that he would try to make things from literal people that could go into a group to destroy from within to ensure a government he's working for is able to take over the world. It would make sense to have them have some ability to reason, shape-shift, and strategize to ensure the best possible results in theory. The shape-shifting power itself may have been able to extend the Doppelgänger lifespan, if not make them semi-immortal, as well. The Nazis still lost the war in this theory, but for a completely different set of reasons, which likely allowed most of the Doppelgängers that existed to escape, among the prisoners that were freed, and go with their instincts and/or goals. That created multiple problems globally for multiple remaining governments, but we're only seeing around 5-20 years later how the government that took over is doing with things,
However, Dr. W. Afton was the scientist in charge of that project, kept details close to be more useful, and/or was too valuable for the current government that took over to eliminate and/or jail. Dr. Afton probably knows the most about Doppelgängers and how they work, hence why he's in a building that literally does these tests daily. So, the current government had to give a different explanation for why the Doppelgängers exist to ensure their expert stayed alive and could help with further research and/or development. Going with something like, Aliens, would make a lot of sense to a lot of people.

here is my theory of the backstory of thats not my neighbor.
here is my summery of the theory of the origin of thats not my neighbor. The doorman (lets call him mr smith) is a american protester who moved to japan in protest in the year 1943. He was sent to the army in which he had ptsd of the memories of the sound of artillery and the rhirst of lack of water. He faced a near death experience around noon of march 31st. He then returned home to nagasaki in 1944. While he was there, he heard about hitlers horrible experiments on the radio. He got afraid that hirohito would do the same to him. Then, on august 9th 1945, while smith was in the basement, I huge bang was heard by him. Little did he know this was the atomic bomb. A horrible stench entered the basement, which provoked him to put on the gas mask he bought from a scammer. he stepped out and all he could see was flames. All he could here was screams. Cut to 1954, smith is going to see the godzila movie. After seeing it, he gets extreme anxiety and ptsd. Out of fear of mutants, he moves to berlin and finds a job as the doorman he is today. From the ptsd, he gets reacurring nightmares. He gets ptsd from the dopplagangers being simaler to mutants of radiation. And he gets ptsd from the ddd phone number. 3312. Which in our age stands for march 31st. That one horrible day. Eventually, smith moves past this and finally dies at the age of 70.
Someone had a theory; that you're supposed and helped by the DDD to sus out the bad dopplegangers just so they can take them back, and perfect their physical copying techniques
When they say people are “killed”, but doppelgängers are “captured”, that gave me strong Weyland-Yutani Corporation vibes, so I wasn’t surprised.

Fnaf and ‘That’s Not My Neighbor’ are somewhat similar in the fact you are a guard who cannot get out of their seat. But the fact the Dr. W. Afton is definitely deliberate reference to FNAF and I would not be surprised if William Afton conduct the experiments in his early adulthood on people. Cool reference

It makes sense, especially since some of the doppelgängers in the game are EXTREMELY hard to notice until you notice the very subtle of details. Like the ID, nose, or even tattoo.
my conection betwen the lore and nightmare mode is propably that after seeing the dopplegangers the doomen get nightmares cuz they SCARY.
In the nightmares you can see every neighbor as their nightamre version and the dopplegangers try to decieve you into thinking its real not a nightmare.
This makes you believe that the d.d.d. is bad and maybe even that the dopplegangers are good.
also thanks to game theory i think that henry DID kill everyone and the reason his nightmares havent stopped after the terapy sessions is becouse the entitty killed him if he tried to do hes OP strat.

Another thing that supports this is that when you call the d.d.d on a doppelganger, on the results screen it says doppelgangers captured but whem you call the d.d.d on a neighbor it says neighbors killed. This could mean that they kill the neighbors while saving the doppelganger to use them another time

One thing is we don't get to see how those outside of such buildings live. Surely such dangerous beings would bring fear to those unable to live in homes without gate guards. Unless the dopplegangers have no interest in homes outside such gated communities. If that is true then it would mean these insular communities and their residents are the only targets. Which might mean the dopplegangers are not really a widespread threat and this whole thing is just an elaborate experiment
They probably are a threat, but one with a certain mind set. They're infiltrators so they're likely attracted to areas with high population densities and with an element of exclusivity like apartments, schools, parts of hospitals, or even a factory. They probably won't harm you if you meet them in public, but they certainly would if you meet them in let's say a employees only lounge for example.
