Air quality detector is not what you need for confined spaces. Air quality detector measure the air pollutants and give you a 'healthy' vs 'unhealthy' air quality index type number of various pollutants, particulates, and pollen.
For confined spaces you need a 4 gas monitor (or more), these will measure the concentrations of CO, O2, EX/LEL (methane and other explosive gases), and H2S. Those are the major ones that you need to know about to deem whether an area is not 'healthy or unhealthy' but 'breathable or deadly'.
The one you pulled out is for sure an air quality monitor and completely useless for 'being safe' in confined spaces. You can tell this because there isn't 4 separate input regions, which is required to get air to 4 different independent sensors for each gas type you are monitoring for. You can also get different gas detection systems if you know of other gases that are in the area.
Source: MSHA, OSHA confined space, lots of time in mines, SPRAT confined space, ect ect.

Hypothermia, trench foot, critters, sharp objects, acute back problems; it's a solution to all of them.
If you have a hammock that covers you and can be zipped up, that's also protection from the rain.
And if not, from the looks of it, that hammock is waterproof, so it can be used to shelter you from the rain or collect rain water for drinking.
Not to mention situational uses, like trapping small critters for food or as a sail if you're stranded on an island and need to get the hell out of there.

the hammock is 100% don't die depending on where you are. Being elevated stops you from both leeching heat into the ground and from being bitten by lots of ground things that have lethal bites.
Except you've got lots of cold air below you that'll keep you cold.

Wind chill is deadly. You never see people using hammocks in cold weather. Insulated pads are a much better idea both thermally, and ease of use. Many are self inflating, and they also do not need trees or anything to hang from.
After having so many dead people ruin his life, it would be tragic for Grey to join them prematurely. Great to know he's got a team who are going help prevent that!

Stagnant air is a serious risk! It's the silent invisible killer. Here in New Zealand, lots of farmers used to die after going down into their own septic tanks to sort out an issue (the risk is better known now). Back in 2013, my ex's boss died inside the hull of a ship. His worker went down a ladder and collapsed and the boss didn't know what happened, so he went down after him. Both of them died
@A H, same thing happened on the Fraser river in Vancouver, BC. One person went down into an old barge, did not come back, second person got worried, went down as well. Both died because there was no oxygen down below.
Yep. This started to happen to my dad but luckily he got out in time IIRC it was something with a grain silo or other such thing. He definitely had some hypoxia as he was very dizzy and confused, and had only lucked out in terms of whatever lucidity he did have told him to get the hell out.
To think as quick as 30 seconds to a minute more and I wouldn’t have ever been born is a weird one…
I think the idea of the two tomes of knowledge in the "Don't Die Box" is to read them BEFORE you got exploring. I think your team and especially wife would agree with that one. At least I hope they agree...
You can't keep that much info in your head ANYWAY. Brains are not for storage, they are for operations (as Grey has emphasized many times on Cortex)

I was fully prepared for this to be some sort of theoretical question or thought experiment. Pleasantly surprised to learn its was a litteral survival kit for his adventures to help keep him safe.

As someone who's taught a wilderness medicine course and prepared some lectures on venomous animals, we always include a slide to laugh at the venom extractor.
It is not recommended by any academic toxicologist or practicing emergency medicine physician.
If it any way delays you from getting to a facility that can give you antivenom, it is truly worse than worthless.
I love how he even pixelates his packing information no with squares but with hexagons!
Strongly recommend throwing all this into some kind of tackle box with organizational structure, you don't want to be digging around for the burn kit for 10 minutes because it's buried in a box

Honestly, two distinct labeled boxes with specific tasks just because in the event of hypothermia or hypoxia, no matter how well you organize your kit, you will still get confused.
Labelled boxes, duffel bag with compartments, or any of the "go bag" style backpacks. Some of this should go on-person, some can stay in a car. But it should all be easy to get to and find.
I recommend some sort of backpack that you can grab instead of a tackle box (there compartmental ones that EMTs use that open up nice and big to make ease of access, but fold up pretty small for ease of transport.) I'm a private pilot and I carry a similar setup that's always within my reach, I tell my passengers "if we land off airport get out of the plane as quickly as possible, but make sure you get my bag on your way out."
I was thinking a vest and/or backpack. A Box is not really handy to carry while exploring...

Hey, grey! So, I have advice for you regarding this kit. Venom extractors are NOT effective for treating envenomation. They can actually make the problem much worse by working the chemicals further into your system. The best way to be prepared is to have the ability to capture what bit or stung you (In the case of an arthropod attack), and by having a general antivenin for the kinds of venomous snakes you are likely to encounter.

Important to specify: only try to capture it if you can do so without getting repeatedly bit/stung. Some people follow that advice and basically try to wrestle with a snake and end up being bitten several times and being much sicker.

Was coming here to say this, and especially don’t use your mouth, it’s one of the most bacteria ridden parts of humans, you can get an infection and lose a limb or even die, yes this has happened.

Small addition to the emergency beacon: You might want to look into the services that provide the rescues. It will still work without it but if you're not a member with the providers you might get a nasty surprise after you successfully didn't die. IIRC there's two big ones with different plans (also obviously you don't need to have it all the time. Pretty sure both offer a per trip option too)

FYI, searching for "venom extractor" gives two search results: sites selling them and sites telling you: "DO NOT USE THEM, THEY'RE MORE HARMFUL THAN BENEFICIAL!". So, I would maybe do some more research into snake bites before carrying one.
Yes. If the pump is doing a better job of moving blood than your heart you have a much bigger problem. Or the same problem I suppose. Either way that's a bad thing.
@@duckrutt Snake venom isn't pumped around the bloodstream. It goes through your lymphatic system.
Also venom extractor is a terrible idea because emergency services will need to know what sort of snake it was to treat you with an antivenom.

In retrospect I can't believe you did that TEKOI investigation without Confined Spaces training. Which would have told you never go down in a confined space if you haven't got a second person to stay at the top and to stay in communication.

Seeing this tells me that when your team reviewed your exploration videos they must have felt like they were watching a horror movie... Your lucky to have such a smart and kind team!
Don't forget to inspect the box at least once a year (6 months preferably). A lot of things expire or will stop working. So if you haven't checked it recently then you don't actually have it.
I think the hammock is a "don't die of exposure while sleeping" device. Sleeping on the cold ground can seep body heat from you surprisingly fast without another sleeping surface, especially over the course of a night's sleep. A hammock is probably much more space efficient than a blowup mattress. Though it's drawback is you do need places in the wild convenient to hang it upon.
Also for "don't die to animals roaming around on ground when asleep" As bears or predators will get startled and attack if you are found on ground.

Honestly blowup mattresses aren't that space-hungry. Some break down very small. You don't always have trees to put a hammock between.
I would assume the hammock would come with supports to hang it on (and if not, I’m sure collapsible ones can be easily found)
What about water purification? You can either get activated charcoal filters or p&g sell these little sachets of powder that when added to dirty water coagulate all the solid gunk and disinfect the water so you can make puddle water potable.

I would also expect a compass, a flare gun, and a bag to put everything in.
I'm sure not all emergency services have whatever equipment is needed to track the beacon, but a flare gun doesn't have that limitation
I think the life straw idea is pretty great, but I have not had to survive off of pond water before...
There wasn't a lot of food commodities in the don't die box, so I don't think the box is really there for long term survival. I also assume CGP Grey is packing water and food on his trips anyway.
Hearing his voice talking to lucy is so funny, man is basically a professional narrator but even he has a dog voice like that because it's impossible not to
She has him by the heart and it was wonderful to hear it in his voice.
These are all great items but there are a few more important ones that I feel are important to include. A water bottle and water purification tablets are essential. Dehydration is probably one of the most likely causes of death in a survivalist situation. Another one is a yellow plastic tarp. It’s can be used as a shelter or a poncho or for signaling. A lighter is handy for starting a fire since fire can keep you warm, boil water, cook food, deter predators, and signal for help.
I'm also surprised that there's no water filter or MRE.
@@ten.seconds I'd say long term stable calorie bars vs mre in this application but also this seems more a don't die for a day or 3 box and you don't need food for that.
Another helpful item for fire starting is birthday candles. Matches are great for getting a flame, but since they only last around 15 seconds, it can be challenging to ignite damp/cold kindling. Birthday candles will burn for a couple minutes, making it much easier to dry out kindling and get a fire going.

Another useful firestarter is dryer lint! You make so much of it everytime you use the dryer. Take that stuff and wad it up with some petroleum based chapstick or Vaseline. Easy firestarter that lasts for minutes and it’s water proof (as long as you use enough petroleum 😊

The Scouts BSA Handbook is something that really flies under the radar. It's always *incredibly* well thought-out since it's meticulously designed to convey lifesaving information to kids

Never underestimate the value of a dog on an adventure, although some may be more trouble than they are worth. (Especially depending on the adventure)
And if a scorpion DOES go undetected in his boots, he's still got the venom extractor!
That is when you know you are loved by everyone around you. Honestly it would bring me to tears if I was surrounded by people that cared enough about me to put that much time, effort and money into a package specifically meant to keep me safe and alive.

One thing I’d recommend adding to this pack for driving purposes is an emergency car starter. The one I have is from a brand called ‘Halo’ but I’m sure there’s plenty of others out there. It’s basically just a big battery you throw in your back seat or your trunk and forget about until you’re in the middle of nowhere in the middle of the night and your engine won’t do the go thing. It’s as simple as clipping the clamps onto the battery prongs and pressing one button, so you don’t have to try and figure out a jumpstart while freezing.
Not relevant for Grey because he drives an EV.

@@Liusila The short version is that the battery in an Intenral Combustion Engine vehicle being flat can be solved by supplying electricity from an external source for a few seconds. The battery in an EV being flat is the equivalent of an ICE's fuel tank being empty. Nothing designed to basically jumpstart an ICE is going to make any meaningful difference to an EV with a flat battery. You'd need an appropriate charger hooked up to a generator of some sort to achieve much on that front.
Those ICE starter packs were reviewed by Big Clive on the IoM a few years ago. Very informative for those that care.

Its important to note that the geiger-counter is just for external radiation. In the TEKOI videos, you were far more likely to receive an internal dose, likely from radon.
When I was working at a food plant as temp labor, the required introductory training had a section about not going into enclosed spaces if the space contains more than one person and everyone in that enclosed space has collapsed.
Yeah I have been told stories as part of confined space trainjng where a series of impromptu rescue attempts into a confined space leads to a pile of bodies instead of just the one
I learned that tidbit from watching USCSG videos.
Too many people dying from unbreathable air being followed into death by poorly informed/equipped would-be rescuers.
The "Don't Die Box" should have been a "Don't Die Backpack". Some of that gear is fine to sit in the car during adventures, but a lot of it you want on your person. But awesome idea overall.

@@davidfrend This is the kind of thing you probably want a dedicated backpack for. You don't want to be looking everywhere for this stuff and then forget something. Instead, you leave everything in the backpack, put it in a closet, and it can double as a sort of "bug-out bag".

This was fun. Seems a lot like a list of items non-backpackers buy as gifts for backpackers. I’m no lightweight stickler but you’d leave behind most of that if you ever had to walk to safety
Yeah. It covered the minor stuff but missed the major stuff. Like, a hammock with no shelter, quilt, or sleeping bag? Gloves and coat but no base layer? A dangerous venom extractor? Boots but no pack to haul the stuff in? Even as a car kit it completely glosses over stuff like food (SOS bars?) and water purification/storage.
Extra weight can be kept in your car though. Yea, in many "I'm lost" situations, you wont have access to your car, but in some situations you will
And your car doesn't care about carrying extra stuff, so there's no downside to having it.

I work in confined spaces and that is SO SO true. We have a saying about argon which is used in our work "all it takes is one breath" heavier than air gases filling your lungs will literally make it impossible for you to breathe not a pleasant way to go. There is also the possibility of simply ending up in a low oxygen environment, anyone exploring confined spaces I cannot stress enough that you have a "cricket" (oxygen concentration monitor and alarm) or other safety equipment. Much better safe than sorry.
I would verify that air quality detector for confined space use. If it doesnt have a self contained pump and test certain things, may not be ideal. Should test for O2, CO, Flammable vapors (so your flashlight doesnt blow you up), and maybe others.

Locater beacons are honestly pretty cool. You can be almost anywhere in the world and if you have one of those beacons and turn it on, there will be a search and rescue team scrambling to your location.
The emergency beacon is also super useful if you get lost and have no sense of direction around you. Because it's super easy to get into an incredible amount of trouble when you wander around guideless.
When I was studying Communication Tech we had a field day where the teacher was showing and explaining typical Installations.
Before he opened the lid for an underground cable line he said:
"If roaches or rats start running from the hole, it's probably ok. If nothing comes out, just close it and get away."
Thankfully, some tens of roaches escaped from the hole as soon as he start opening the lid...

That is an expensive box! What a wonderful gift! However, I second the other comments about the air quality detector and the venom extractor, perhaps those need further investigation.
I never thought about the logistical nightmare of trying to unbox and review survival gear without doing prior research. This has been quite eye opening.
Great team. Thats a Goretex jacket so its waterproof yet breathable. Those Salomon hiking boots are also top of the line Goretex waterproof/breathable boots. Your team really cares about you not dying.
Goretex, incredible stuff, but also a forever chemical and total overkill for 99% of people. At least it will be used for actually exploring and not for "oh no, it's raining on the walk from my SUV to Walmart" XP
@@fryphillipj560 IDK about 99%, it's useful for basically anyone who does any kind of extended outdoor activities (more than like 30 minutes). It's significantly more comfortable to hike or otherwise be active in something breathable, and you're going to want a waterproof/windproof shell layer outside most of the time anyway. I agree it's overkill just for everyday wear, but even just like shoveling snow you could seriously benefit from gore or similar materials.
I love how out of all the equipment his team gave him. They also made a book as a guide to what he got and when to use it.

Once you learn what everything does, you should make a video explaining it to us as an “Adventure 101” since teaching is the best way to internalize knowledge.
A hammock is a don't die item, it keeps you off the ground while you're at your most vulnerable and the ground can be a dangerous place.

I was expecting this to be an educational video about some kind of concept I was previously unaware of. The box you keep an Oracle AI in, the nuclear football, the Doomsday Clock, quantum superposition… Not those exact things, but something in that ballpark. I'd be _lying_ if I said I'm not even a _little bit_ disappointed that it's not that… But I love this a whole hell of a lot. A "Don't Die Box" is a great gift. And how kind of your wife and your team to put that together for you. I'm glad you were lucky enough not to need this before (the idea of a world where you have a "Death" section on your Wikipedia article that says you were found asphyxiated in Tekoi - perhaps not until several days/weeks/months later - is absolutely horrifying), and even gladder that you now have one!

The YakTrax are super useful... I dunno how often people actually die from falling on ice, but certainly people get injured all the time and those definitely help a lot with not slipping and falling.

I live in California, and my family keeps our earthquake kit (a sort of very specific "don't die box") in our car. my top tip? always keep a pair of shoes nearby- the largest category of injuries after an earthquake is people with debris in their feet (YEOCH!)
Someone else mentioned that, but Air Quality Detector is not for gasses. It's to be used in conjuction with N95 masks when you visit Poland or other smog-filled place. 🙃

The wipes are more important for survival than you might initially think. Not only would getting sick because you aren't clean be a huge problem but mental health is crucial if you are in an extended survival scenario. If you feel better(cleaner) you sleep better, make better decisions, remain calmer, and conserve resources.
Hijacking this comment, the wipes are designed to remove lead contamination that could leak into your skin, not just for wiping your butt. In the situation where grey was exploring that door could be lead lined to prevent radiation leaking through during tests.

@@fejfo6559 You can survive almost a month without food, but your decision making skills go down the drain after only a couple days so after that you're screwed unless someone finds you.
That said a lot of the things in the box are probably going to be left in his car, so he can just bring some cliff bars with him when he goes out. Or get some freeze dried backpacking food.

Another possible inclusion to go with the matches: A cotton ball coated in vaseline will burn for a surprisingly long time so they're great for starting a fire, and you can stuff several into an old pill bottle or similar container for easy (and clean) transport
The hammock allows you to sleep elevated off the ground where all the ants, millipedes ticks and wild pigs like to wander at night. Don't underestimate the hammocks abilities to keep you alive.

Hammock can also fit into the "Don't die of hypothermia" section. Making an effective barrier between you and the Earth can be difficult in many situations. Without that barrier you are just going to be bleeding heat all night.
Love the channel! You got the hook up with that box. The hammock helps you to not sleep on the ground(with all the buds,etc) and keeps the earth from stealing your body heat. Great gifts!
don't underestimate how much heat gets stolen from your body when you lay straight on the ground instead of in something like a hammock. One of the basic things you have to do when building a shelter for yourself is put some kind of insulator between you and the ground. In the old days that was straw. In survival situations it's often tree branches. Not super comfy but not bad at insulating.
"Humans need not apply" was EXCELLENT; Might it be possible that you would consider an update on it? So much of what you described in the original has come to pass! Where does it look like things can go from here... e.g. Boston Dynamics - Atlas, GPT-3, OpenAI, AlphaFold2, DeepMind (GO)... Am sure it would be a serious eye opener.
Yak tracks are so nice! 15+ years ago the parents and I delivered newspapers. After the father slipped on ice and broke his ankle, we ended up getting some. They ended up becoming backpack staples when I was in college as well. Great for those who walk a lot during the winter.

Truly surprised there isn't some sort of MRE in here, extremely useful calorie packed meals that last literal decades, if used sparingly a single meal MRE you could eat from for days.

A hammock is definitely a Don't Die item! In cold areas, sleeping on the ground can result in death via body heat loss. Even a layer of pine needles as insulation can save your live, but a hammock is a lot comfier and less pokey.
I thought they'd include a bag for all of this so you can more effectively not die on the go.

Nice to see the included flashlight is an Olight. The S mini. A very compact, easily rechargeable light. Maybe still the brightest model for its size in the lineup.
Two things I didn't see that I would recommend are an emergency poncho and emergency blanket (i.e. space blanket). The poncho is because the only thing that causes hypothermia faster than being cold is being cold AND WET, and the blanket because, especially if things get really bad, you may need something to wrap yourself with to keep warm.
Love the don't die box. My wife and I love our Yaktrax's. We have been getting more ice in winter lately and it make hiking much more enjoyable/safer. It almost like the ice is not even there. The only problem, being a geezer, is bending low enough to put them on my hiking shoes.
