Note: This single was originally banned from being performed on Countdown and played on national radio due to the lyrical content of the song. However, the song eventually gotten mainstream exposure, thus becoming one of the most played songs on Australian commercial radio.
Lyrics:
I wanna tell you about my mountain home
Where all the ladies names are Joan
Where husbands works back late at night
He's hopes are up for his trousers down
With hostess on a business flight
Taxi in a Mercedes drive
I hope that driver's coming out alive
The garden is a dorsetted
That lady - she's so corseted
She's got 15 ways to lead that boy astray
He thinks he's one and only
But that lovely she's so lonely
She pumps him full of breakfast and
she sends him on his way
What a sing song dance
What a performance
What a cheap tent show
Oh no no no no no
CHORUS
Then the boys light up
Then the boys light up X2
Then the boys light up
Then the boys light up - light up - light up
Silently she opens the drawer
Mothers litte helper is coming out for more
Strategically positioned before the midday show
Her back is arched, those lips are parched
Repeated blow by blow
And later at the party where all the MPs rave
About the hummers she's been giving and the money that they save
To her it is skin lotion
For his promotion too
That flat in Surfers Paradise with the ocean view
What a sing song dance
What a performance
What a cheap tent show
Oh no no no no no
CHORUS

Playing the harmonica and then singing 😍
80's Aussie music is the best
What about Bon Scott playing the bagpipes on the back of a truck for "It's a long way to the top if you wanna rock'n'roll" and singing?
They only mimed on countdown. Did he even have a harmonica in his hand?
Aussie TV lip syncing at its best.
@@russellwalton1108 bro we literally watched that today in class
Bon wasn’t actually playing the bagpipes. He made a great job of pretending he was though .
This was a massive hit in 1981 now 40 odd years later it's still outstanding and much better listening to than any modern day crap
As a 15 year old I agree. 80 Aussie rock is my favourite. I despise most modern music. few exceptions.
@iweigh34stone do yourself an even bigger favour and don't overlook the 70's.

The gorgeous and talented Brad Robinson, died aged 38, in 1996. Way too young! R.I.P. ❤️
Hearing James Reyne singing this song makes me proud to be Australian and have grown up through the 80's in Australia and listening to this on a cassette tape and on the Radio at Home and in my Holden Commodore, I still love this song after almost 40 years since it was released and think the sound ofit has never aged.
so proud if you can understand wtf he is trying to say. good for you

2020 and this stilllll rocks. Prays for Australia as it burns..
Plenty of rain about since your prayers and with buckets load more predicted for the next 9 days. Cheers.
Heard it on the radio today
Thanks for the prayer, we feel it. But rest assured, nothin will get us down (just look at our flora and fauna 😳🤣) We are a special kinda stupid living here but it just makes us stronger.
Love from Aus and keep fighting the good fight 🤠
Pray for us again this week, Mildura's gettin to 45degrees today. The bush fire season has come around again 😢🇦🇺
@Liam H I kept praying for rain, so there would be lots of mushies growing this year 🥳🥳
Oh my god. When I was really young, me and my family would go to this beach in Wollongong every Australia Day and this song would play every single time on the radio for every single Australia Day. I love this song, so nostalgic.
Im on Wollongong beach now listing to it hows that for a crazy world seriously portkembla home town
rock australiano anos 80 , melhor safra , só banda boa
One of our greatest bands. They smell of the sun, the surf and the sand. No one sang about the 'normal' Australia better..."The Crawl"
simple man
After hearing this song in passing about a month ago but not able to remember the name of the band or lyrics, I have since been on an epic search to track it down. After querying multiple friends, youtube and google - it was finally my mother who was rocking the 80s who referred me here. Such relief!
We had them LIVE at the Castle Hotel in the 80s followed by a group called MYSEX
In Adelaide where Castle Plaza is now.
Australian crawl
I heard this song about 8 years ago too at a party in the rocky mountains, my Australian friend's band was playing it while I was tripping on mushrooms and it was the coolest song I ever heard. I couldnt tell what they were singing and couldnt find the lyrics anywhere and my searches came up with nothing until a couple weeks ago this song popped into my youtube feed and the name struck me "THATS THE SONG". And now this gem will always be in my musical rotation

Driving up the street together with this blaring, not long later, i never seen them again..... Talk about mixed feeling, sad, but at the same time what great last momemt memories with such a cool cool song to remember them by

astonishing to look back on these outrageous lyrics played on TV for children to sing along and memorize while their parents watched on with not a clue
this band, "the crawl" could have been as big as any Aussie rock band of their time.
some of their music is still unmatched today (listen to Reckless and consider the lyrics, consider the unconventional confidence of unfinished lyrics

"I was heading for my mountain home where all the ladies names are Joan." James Rayne was singing about the suburb he grew up in, Mt. Eliza in Victoria. A very posh part of Melbourne these days.

One of, if not the best, things to come out of Australia since the Hills Hoist
I have always loved this band.
This song is excellent, one of their best.....
Meh.. I never liked the Crawl, especially Reyne himself. He always seemed like a sleaze to me and certainly couldn't actually sing.
I met him in the mid 90s about a half dozen times and I can tell you he is very bright. He was, at least to me, down to earth and had a strong social awareness.
A leftie if you like. It kinda makes sense - the lyrics to his songs are very clever. I liked him.
@ROMAnski I was , then, do not hold it against everyone.
Kerensa Birch are you deaf? He could more than sing, pronounce words he can not
Love the Crawl
Yes a classic and still is now 61 look back at those times with heaps of love , unfortunately now 61 , michael in melbourne australia
For you to WARNIE THANKYOU GOD BLESS michael in melbourne australia
How could this not have been number 1 all around the globe??? Best lyrics by an Aus band. Well James Reyne actually. The guy's a genius.
A brilliant band to see live
+Jacqueline Lucas Got to see their farewell gig at Melbourne Showgrounds; they were indeed fantastic live.
+Jacqueline Lucas
Really! I made the mistake of seeing them live when they first came out... utterly awful.
many bands are. pseudo echo made it relatively big in melbourne thanks to hte help of countdown. saw them live and an they were so crap its not funny, electric drummer couldn't even control his drumsticks. dance floor was abandoned, and people flocked back to dance floor for dj lol
The first popular band I ever did see live, at the Ararat Town Hall in country Victoria!
ahhhh minha adolescência...saudades daquele tempo!!!
Good song from a 16 yr boy in England who does not know anybody else who knows these. Still I don't care they don't know good music!
I always loved the line "That flat in Surfers Paradise with the ocean view!"

The best era of Aussie music. If you don't like it, you can bugger off somewhere else.
2020 e escutando ainda , muito bommm
I saw Crawl at a concert in about '83/4.
I had a whole ounce of primo MJ rolled up and ready to go. Every couple of minutes I'd fire one up, take a huge hit, then pass it to the crowd. Used up the whole ounce with time to spare.
Those were the days.
Sure..... coolest story.
They surely were! Whooo!
🤙
I went to a Redgum show, at the QIT Campus Club. I can't remember the song, but at the strategic moment a toaster in front of Schumann popped up two huge doobies. He flamed them and chucked them to the crowd. Good times...
I saw them around then on the Gold Coast.....in a big space...somewhere........very stoned.......whole lot of bands......oh the memories ( or part memories...lol )
Listened years ago to these boys..i,m back again and still enjoying their music.
Came out the year I was born and remember this song from about 4 yrs old waiting in a dusty carpark in the Mt Isa mines for my dad to finish work. So yeah you could say it brings back memories.
