Bagpipes were a military instrument. They were meant to be heard over the chaos and noise of battle. So yes, they are LOUD.
The great highland bagpipes are, but there are other bagpipes more suitable for indoor playing.
Good point. What amazed me is that the DRUMMER covered his ears. The DRUMMER was worried about hearing damage???
@@bkitteh6295 most drummers I know wear hearing protection
As somebody said, there are many kind of bagpipes. For example bock bagpipes are one of the not as much as loud. The loudest instrument from this cathegory are definitely the medieval bagpipes.
AS Abagpipe player so true
As a Scot I can confirm the bagpipes are THAT loud
Do you practice with ear protection? No hate, I'm curious :)
@@xandraxandra1437 I don’t play, but I reckon their ears get used to it after a while? All I know that having it in your ear for even a few seconds can be painful for the ears but sounds great 🙌🏻🙌🏻😅
@@saramcgrath01 getting used to it aka going deaf ;)
@xandra xandra Hi I do play, most players dont because most dont have the greatest pitch, but it's highly recommended, I've played for 6 years, didnt wear earplugs for 4 years and have some hearing loss in my left ear. So the answer is yes and no, though it's recommended.
@@ryansmith91 I bet, that’s really cool I’d love to learn but don’t think I have the stamina 😅
Bagpipes are *so* loud inside. Bearable outside, but heaven help you if you're in an enclosed space with one (especially with sensory issues...)
I have sensory issues with loud noises.
I play bagpipes in a band and we rehearse in side a church with a really high ceiling… it’s very loud
I am a windband musician, and some idiot composers think its a great idea to combine bagpipes wit a wind band, so one of my orchestras invited a bagpipeband who showed up witd 12 players, the windband had 60 members, guess wich band was the loudest....
@@Nature31i’m from wind band too, which piece is that so I can avoid 😩
Maybe it's my ADHD but even hearing bagpipes on the street would immediately make me run for my life. The sound is scarier than my morning alarm lol
How to tell Twoset is Australian: two instruments, one of which they refer to as “ethnic” the other is a didgeridoo.
Tbf I'm not Australian but I'm very familiar with a didgeridoo because my aunts boyfriend and his entire family are hippies who play more cultural instruments
Although I thought the stringed one was a Kora (which is very very similar and its almost certainly part of the Kora family, but it's not a Kora)
@@Klara_S. I recognised the didgeridoo too (I often used to see someone busking with one near my office), but I was just amused that “ethnic” is essentially synonymous with “an instrument I don’t recognise” .
@Cat W Fr. I wonder if to someone from North Sentinel, if a Violin is just "that ethnic Italian instrument"
@@Klara_S. it's an ngoni
@@kela8770 I'm aware
It's cool that the violist knew how to hold the Kamale Ngoni and threw everyone off!
Yes. I thought she must play it simply because she held it in such a non-intuitive way.
I'm guessing they just taught everyone how to hold it behind the scenes just to trick the contestants. Or the instrumentalists just hung out before the video shoot and they talked about their instruments.
I think it was just intuition. Theres no way to hold it like a guitar with the height of the strings, it would protrude too much, and theres no way to strum. Also, no shoulder strap.
The side handles are handles, and it does rest naturally on the pelvis.
Also, they participants had to do this multiple times, so they could have known from previous attempts
She could just be knowledgeable about musical instruments. I'm British, but I happen to play the mbira.

I didn't see if anyone said it but the Kamale Ngoni is a west African instrument that is classfied as a kind of harp. There's several varieties of instruments like this, one of which is the Kora which has a wider range. :)
Yeah, I thought it was a kora when I first saw it.
Aaaah that's why they didn't call it a Kora. A guy I know plays the Kora and I wondered what the difference was.
Thanks for your knowledge ❤
I KNEW IT!! I'm from Nigeria and our string instruments look so similar
There was a guy who played bagpipes at my college and he always had to stand a few hundred feet away from his dorms outside to practice. But hey I got serenaded on my jogs.

@@davidtogi5878no, lots of pipe bands. And pipers wearing ear plugs.

I'm Deaf, and even if I'm outside, if there's a bagpipe player nearby, I can hear them with my hearing aids off (hearing aids, when off, act a lot like ear plugs). I know something's loud if I can hear it at all. If I can hear it with my hearing aids off, it's practically deafening.
...no play on words intended.

Bagpipes are so damn loud. To be fair, that's what they were invented for and I would not recommend being in the same small room that six of them are playing in simultaneously. It's been years and I don't think my ears ever fully recovered.
It makes sense that bagpipes are so loud considering they're traditionally played in the Scottish highlands and mountains, so the sound needed to travel.
That's faux history. The bagpipes weren't invented by the Scottish.
@@squodge Bagpipes were played almost everywhere. The Scottish variety were probably developed there.
I love that they never stop dissing the violists or having near heart attacks when a string instrument is handled wrong 😂
I went to a "world" festival where every booth was a different country. At the main stage they had a music demonstration from all the countries. The announcer talked a little about each instrument, the bagpipes, for instance, were so loud they could be heard over a train, so they took the microphone away. Halfway through the singular bagpiper's performance A TRAIN GOES BY. Literally right next to the tent the festival was at, seperated only by a tall chain link fence. Horn blared and everything. And yes, those bagpipes were heard loud and clear.
I suppose the volume makes sense if they were originally a war instrument like another commenter mentioned. But that’s still insane cause trains are so loud
"grandpa lost his intuition" editor-san roasting them harder than anything I could ever say about The Prodigy 💀😂
the prodigy obviosly wasnt a prodigy
I initially wonder what brought Twoset to react to this video, then I understand, it's the smell of the VIOLA😂Viola to them is like a good-tempered buddy whom they can comfortablly joke around without causing any significant harm (well I hope lol). And of course it is not a Twoset video if their camera/mic/light works well the whole time lol Enjoy your time at home guys cause World Tour is coming!!
With the kamale ngoni, the musicians that do play it usually sits down instead of standing up. That’s probably why it looks awkward or weird when the musician played it in the video.
It can be played standing up, but like they suspected you typically use a kind of harness for that. Either around your back, waist, or around you wrist. You also usually hold it more sideways when playing standing up.
The reason bagpipers stroll as they play . . . it's harder to hit a moving target.
Bagpiper here - we typically wear earplugs for most of our playing
So how do you know do you play properly? (I’m just curious 😅)
@@East_Wind._. they can still hear their pipes through the plugs, i bet
@@oxoelfoxo yes, we can still hear what we're playing through the earplugs. They just cut down the volume. I don't wear them.
As a bagpiper, I can confirm that even we wear earplugs when we practice
Not all of us. Certainly not during competition.
@@giuseppelogiurato5718 competition and performance is not practice. We perform without but every pipe band I have ever been a part of advised all their members to wear ear plugs for practice, particularly if practicing indoors
@@robs7163 oh yeah, duh.. I must've missed the "practice part", lol .. for sure, many pipers use earplugs, especially inside. I just don't like the feel of them; I like to hear the full volume. I've been playing for 30 years and my hearing seems to be fine, so I guess I'm one of the lucky ones.
@@giuseppelogiurato5718 yeah, no worries. Also, I suspect that the piper in this video probably advised the other musicians to cover their ears off camera.
@@robs7163 I'll bet you're right; "drama factor" = "more views/comments etc"... but, why did she play Highland Cathedral? The most UN-bagpipe-ish tune, in my opinion. Viola has the most beautiful double stops. The instrument just rings deep in my soul in a way violin never can reach. Brings tears to my eyes every time.
Yes
Yes agreed!!
Every time?! You must be BAWLING in every string quartet!
You KNOW something is loud when the percussionist is covering their ears!

This hits close to home. I played euphonium in middle school, and what a sight it was to see. A scrawny short girl hauling a case almost her height. I was told that the instrument didn't suit me, and that I was the first girl euphonist in my school in over ten years.
People associate instruments like the tuba and euphonium with big boy jocks - and I think that's so dumb. Spread awareness, because people like me wanna play what we wanna play!
5 years later, still playing the euphonium. Don't listen to stereotypes. Play what instrument YOU want to. ❤

The background reminds me of when i first started watching them
Bagpipes are loud. That's why pipers use a practice chanter inside when they practice. It's far less loud because it doesn't have the bag and pipes.
The bagpipes are that loud. I am an organist, and I had to do a duet on the organ with a bagpiper (I know that sounds weird). The bagpiper couldn't hear me over the bagpipes, and I was playing THE FREAKING PIPE ORGAN.
I had been wondering who would win that battle! I could imagine them going well together, from a sufficient distance. Now I wonder which could drown the other out - the bagpipes or the ancient Celtic carnyx (also used on actual battlefields), which is reputed to have the biggest dynamic range of any instrument. Search "carnyx" on YT for some examples. I was lucky enough to hear John Kenny play a reconstructed one live at the British Museum, with the sound bouncing off the Elgin Marbles - wonderful! It was very beautiful, played more quietly. Come to think of it, a carnyx would also make a good partner for the pipe organ.
How did you get the organ in tune with the bagpipes? You can't tune a pipe organ, at least not easily, and the bagpipes doesn't play at concert pitch, so I'm wondering how you solved that problem.
What piece were you playing? Now I'm curious
@@giuseppelogiurato5718 It was a digital organ, so it had a way to tune the A to whatever you wanted to the tenth of a Hertz.

Yes, bagpipes ARE really that loud. I do the dumb, boring flag routine in front of my mom's marching band, and the bagpipes are always practicing right next to our band on parade day, and they have no trouble competing with the band. Our band of about 25 members will be practicing, and then right next to us 5 bagpipes will be playing, and I can always hear both equally. It's amazing, really
Great Highland Bagpipes are loud, but there are plenty of quieter, and quiet, bagpipes around.
We can call the practice of Classicify-ing everyone “classification” 😉

Feel so good to have the old setup again!
Best didgeridoo player I ever met was in Edinburgh busking, and he was a backpacker from Taiwan with like 8 didge’s and a couple drums that he just walked around with, plus his clothes and other stuff.
Edit: I was busking and he had just got there, but we did a couple sweet banjo/didgeridoo duets that I will cherish as the weirdest thing ever played in front of ST. Giles cathedral.
That sounds awesome. Wish I'd got to hear it.
That snare drummer was the life of the party, omg.
As a Scottish person, I can confirm that bagpipes are very very very loud
Was in a choir, standing in front of the bagpipers. When they blew, I wondered why we even bothered to sing. 🥲🥲🥲
They're crazy loud.
Lots of softer bagpipes. Lowland pipes, Uillean, Northumbrian, 18th C musette, etc Latvian pipes are loud I think.

Bag pipes are so loud, they are meant to be played outdoors, they were used on the battlefield to rally the soldiers, and now in marching bands.
It was cool to see the Viola girl playing more what I would consider "fiddle" music.
Awesome reaction type video. My son plays the snare drum in a pipe band (bagpipes). EVERYONE wears earplugs, in practice and performances.

What is the string instrument we don’t know?
Which is a perfect Segway to me question: can TwoSet do an “alternative” instruments series or episode, world instruments or ethnic instruments, whatever you want to say? Basically not traditionally orchestral instruments.
Editor-san correctly listed the name as a kamale ngoni, a string instrument used by griots (kinda like singing historians) in West Africa. I'd seen the instrument played by griots, but never knew the name, so thank you, Editor-san!
Correction: Cut's Editor-san, not TwoSet's.
@@BigGrabowski TFS - I missed that. I was wondering, would it usually be played sitting down?
@@londongael414 There's small, rectangular versions where I can imagine you can play while standing/walking, but the style here is definitely preferably played sitting down. Better for busking than being a human Walkman, so to speak.

Scottish bagpipes are definitely outdoor instruments. There are other types of bagpipes, and some can be played indoors, but not the Scots. 🏴
There are different kinds of Scottish bagpipes, and The Great Highland Bagpipe is the loudest. Other types of Scottish bagpipes (Scottish Small Pipes, Parlour Pipes, etc) are less noisy and are often played with other instruments in ceilidh bands and things like that.

They're not very common. People who start stringed instruments at a young age typically learn the basics on violin. It's easier to teach a classroom of children if they're all playing the same instrument.
I've been playing viola for over 30 years but even I started on piano and violin as a kid. My older brother is a professional symphonic cellist and Juliard grad. He started on piano and violin.
I think most people who have only played viola will be people who started music at a later age.

No bagpipes ARE that loud. Best played outdoors. My uncle plays (and makes) pipes and it’s really loud. The entire colony can hear him. He’s an amazing music instrument maker and musician tho. Always so cool to hear.
If you don’t mind me asking, what is his name? I’ve been playing the pipes for quite a few years, so there is a small chance I’ve heard of him or his instruments!
A video to brighten the day - thank you! Looking forward to meeting you in London!
Love ur videos two set! Ur my inspiration, I have recently started learning the violin
You and 312 others in my tally so far! There was a lass recently who subbed the channel but said she wasn't even a musician. I warned her that, like myself, she might end up being one! One week(!) later she'd decided she wanted to play the violin! Such is the TwoSet influence. Hope it's going well...
I could totally troll them! I'm a flute player, so I could fake sax somewhat convincingly. I taught but never played marching snare, so I could at least play the perididdle rhythm that was requested- in traditional or matched grip even. I've watched enough TwoSet that I could probably hold a viola convincingly as long as I didn't have to play it. If trombone was an option I could do that one too since I played 3rd in Jazz band in high school, even though I was barely adequate and it was many years ago.
I went to a small school with no orchestra, but wind band, marching band, jazz band, and indoor percussion were filled by anyone who had time to learn another instrument. It was great exposure to different styles, clefs, melody (flute, which is the violin of wind band), rhythm (xylophone/pit percussion for marching band), and playing in the middle of a chord (trombone). Each experience made me a better overall musician.
Finally! Another TwoSet video!!!!! This one is equally fun and I love it!!
I never realized I missed the square background lol feels nostalgic
I am playing a concert tomorrow that includes a guest appearance with bagpipes. During rehearsals our conductor told us about the story about a friend of his who got married and he wished for bagpipes as music to be played in the chapel. Today on of the rules at said chapel is that no bagpipes are allowed for music at events bc it was just so ridiculously loud 😂
That's really silly. I'm a piper and I play the pipes in churches and chapels all the time. It's very common to have a piper/pipers at a wedding; I don't know why that wedding chapel would ban bagpipes, unless it was a facility that has more than one wedding happening at once?

As a person who commented less than a minute after this video came out, I can confirm that I have not yet watched it but will comment like I have anyways.
My bff has a neighbor who would play a bagpipe in the apartment complex (we don't live in the UK area or even near it). She would send me voice messages of the person playing and you could hear it without turning the volume all the way up. So yes, it is very loud.
This neighbor would also occasionally play and loop the first 4 bars of Pirates of the Caribbean on piano, and only the right hand melody.
I don't know which one is more annoying.
(just kidding, love to all players of all instruments)
As a clarinet player I'd love to know what kind of vibe we have!
For me (cellist) clarinets give me very specific vibes like having many siblings (brothers mostly), niche (and "high IQ") interests like agriculture or chess, good grades but only at favored subjects, mischievous but knows how to get away with stuff. Appearancewise, slim, lots of knitwear, dark hair. So yeah very specific.
Hi! Fellow clarinetist here… I feel like French horns and Clarinets are viewed as the reliable / prepared sections in the band environment. Also interested to hear what others think our vibe is 😂
Clarinetists are seriously cool, but understated about it. They feel no need to shove their coolness in your face. This is unlike saxophonists, who are seriously cool and don’t want you to forget it.
Sophisticated 😄
