Back when bands had talent and music was music.
Hellyeah
How in the hell can any band play at this level of concentration and precision and STILL sing with harmony that tight??? I’m in awe.
studio magic
czcams.com/video/TNMSfL-9BMY/video.html This is what they sound like live. Very good, just not perfect... which isn't expected. When you are releasing a live Video or Record some bands will overdub to get the sound just right. Little known secret.
@@sleep_sounds No, I saw them live in 1987. The other video must be an off night. They really did sound as good as this. They did a two and a half hour show with Tower of Power and I did not hear a single mistake or bad note from a single musician on stage.
@@admiralbob77 when you are live it is loud and through big speakers, it makes you think it sounds amazing… and it kind of does. But every band that has a live album is at least mixed in a studio with most of them having mistakes fixed or parts sweetened. Its just how it works in the industry. Ive been a part of these live recordings as a musician and a producer, trust me, it gets mixed in a studio and overdubs happen.
I think in "Heart and Soul" the guitars sound kind of out of sync with eachother
Bill Gibson was SUCH an underrated drummer. Every beat, every night, so tight. Been a drummer for 30+ years and still love playing his stuff. So fun and fulfilling. Made 4-4 playing truly exciting.
Why was? He still is!
in addition to being a backing vocalist who never runs out of steam😃...wish I had so much stamina lol
Show was at the Kabuki night club in San Francisco. This was back when it was actually good to live in San Francisco.
Some of the best musicians to ever take the stage. I dont care if you like the music or not. Writing music like this and souinding this tight takes an immense amout of talent.
It is very impressive how Huey's live vocals are basically exactly the same as the studio recordings.
Somehow they IMPROVED them. 😳
This is what the biggest band in America in 1985 sounded and looked like. This concert is perfectionism and so fun. Thanks for the upload.
And playing for their hometown!
Just fantastic in every aspect ❤
Bass player is killing it with the statuesque cigarette and sunglasses pose at 3:30. Love his whole deal.
Brett Borovic MARIO CIPPOLINA. brother of JOHN CIPPOLINA of QUICK SIVER MESSENGER SERVICE!!!!
@@RICHBLACKCOCK He's so good!
I was at this concert. I was only 18 and they were amazing.
Lucky man, i wish i could,ve been there , i just got turned onto huey Lewis , hes an excellent front man , the band is off the HOOK !! I Love it, i have to laugh, at first, i thought huey was a new band an up and coming new band,LOL, til i seen 1985 ,LOL, aw shit i said, LOL, its wild how time goes by so damn fast, by the time i hear something i Love or like very strong, there already next to retirement,LOL, i have to pay closer attention to the radio for new music that is new to me and is in the begining of there musical career , as to not miss great bands like Huey Lewis, to catch ,em live in concert , now Queen, i knew about, being back in the 80,s i heard Huey on the radio just a few years ago, imagine that,LOL, talk about a little behind ,LOL, i have to get with it !! LOL, BIG TIME !! it sux to find out a band you just heard of is already off main stream touring, and making new record,s , at 18 , i bet you had an awesome time if you were at this show, you must have had a awesome time, i know i would have , thats for damn sure !! W.H.W. 3-14-23 ***$$*** 68LesPaul
God his band was absolutely off the chain
Now that's what a concert should do. The whole place is with the music. Huey you are the heart of rock and roll. Thank you for showing the world what a real concert is!!!!!!!
These are great musicians! No in ears, no click/backing tracks, no auto tune either! AWESOME!
Nothing wrong with in-ears. Sometimes it’s nice to be able to clearly hear your bandmates’ instruments in noisy rooms.
@@DerBlutenPat1348 I think he was just commenting on the fact that they didn't have any of the modern assistance to help with their outstanding performance. But you're also correct.
crazy!
in ears weren't even invented at this time and were not affordable at all when they were, the first performer to use them was stevie wonder in 87
I think they had some sort of voice enhancing on scene
Chris Hayes guitar solo starting at 25:28 just kicks ass!
This constant needs to be officially released on DVD Blu-ray
This is how real musicians sound when they play live! One of the few bands that ever existed that are better live than they are in the studio and with all the BS that comes with it! AWESOME!
Bill Gibson, I really do love his style of playing the drum.
The solo in Trouble In Paradise is the best solo ever played! Marc Russo!
How do they get that many musicians to sound so tight ...and blended? A musical triumph for the ages.
Lots of heart, talent and practice. And a rare mix of a band at least somewhat getting along. This band is a rare treat for humanity.
it's called musicianship. you actually play the instrument every day of your life and you become good at it and then you play with the same band members every day for a decade and you play the same songs every day and this is what you get. back in the day... not anymore
they got something many dont have to day- heart and talent and hard work
Very carefully
@@jewante They remind me of my father: No flash, no glamour, just hard work and practice to keep getting better!
I love Huey's stage presence.. so honest and legit

Gee thanks for the lineup we just watched the thing. What a douche bag 💼
2:29 start The Heart of Rock 'n' Roll ;-)
thanks
They were at the top of their game for this concert, and the Tower of Power horns just make it that much better, especially on "Workin' For A Livin'" and "I Want A New Drug".
And of course, Mario Cipollina. Coolest. Bass. Player. Ever.
I saw him on this tour - he still makes me want to scream like a teenage girl! ❤️❤️❤️
who didn´t fall in love with the SPORTS album?
Dammit I want the 80's back. Great memories of Huey Lewis and especially spinning 'Sports' on vinyl.
I've seen them 2 times in person great singers I've been a fan of Huey Lewis and the news since I was a kid am still a big fan I still listen to his music thanks for sharing this video it's 2023 am still rocking with the news I heard about his hearing I hope maybe one day he will sing again I hope 😊 good looking man to
The goddamn drummer is shockingly fun to watch.. Dudes perfection!!
Hes the BEST RADDEST DRUMMER EVER
Yeah they wanted to replace him with a drum machine. They kind of did in 1983 on some songs on sports but not after that. Why they wanted to replace him makes no sense though....
That's the great Bill Gibson for ya!
He isn't back there screwing around, his playing makes all the songs better and he is singing some killer backing vocals.
I'll be chatting with the great Bill Gibson on "Facebook Live" on Sat. June 6th, 2020 at 2pm ET/11am PT. facebook.com/john.dechristopher
When I was a kid, this album was huge! Easily one of my all-time favs. Such a talented band.
X2
Still got it on vinyl
In 1984 I was in sixth grade. My teacher was the mother of the saxophonist JONNY COLLA. Mrs Colla Was my teacher and every year johnny came to her class to meet all the students I got to meet him that year. And he was very famous and it was such a big deal.
Tower of Power takes this to another level.
I think of my father whenever I hear Huey Lewis. He was a musician at one point in his life, and taught me the value of going in every day, working hard and doing the best you can. HLN was a "working" band, in that they stuck with the same lineup for years, avoided drama and kept refining their material to the point where they were one of the tightest bands of the '80s.
The sax solo in Trouble In Paradise is the best solo in rock history. Period.
The Marc Russo one? It's absolute greatness but you should check out the various CZcams versions of Marc playing with the Doobies on "Long Train Running". The altissimo work is other-worldly.
Or check out Marc’s solo on Celebrate Me Home from Kenny Loggins’ Grand Canyon concert.
Absolutely right!!! The sax double-act in this song is out of this world. Best 80s sax solo that exists to this day . Just captures everything about the style and sound of 80s sax playing . ❤❤❤❤❤
Some of the catchiest tunes in rock n roll history, played with surgical precision and cool, casual FUN! God I miss the 80s- feel blessed I was a teen back then.
Huey is a guy you would want to party With! What a great album Sports is!!
Chris's sound guitar indispensable.
They sound exactly like their tracks.
Must have been before their most successful Back to the Future theme song, That's Power of Love.
Hard to believe they never had a number-one hit.
They really showed their singing chops at 26:30 in It's Alright.
WOW, one song right after another.
Yeah this concert was taped a few months before Back to the Future hit the theaters in 1985. I also agree that it’s hard to believe they never had a #1 hit. They should’ve had several IMO.
Wow, that's a tight rendition of Heart and Soul. Huey's vocals are excellent, as good as the studio track and Chris Hayes as always is spot on with the guitar work. And how refreshing to watch a concert without people trying to record it on a phone......just people genuinely enjoying the music which you now so rarely see. If only time travel existed.....:(
What a lineup with the Tower of Power horn section. I wish they kept them but even without them Huey Lewis and the News flat kicks ass. This tour shows how tight they are.
I was at this concert and Mic Jaguar was watching from the right side of the stage awesome concert.
Holy fuck, really? I'm so JEALOUS!
"Walking on a thin line" just kicks ass! Great bass line and guitar hero playing!
+biff0101 Chris Hayes was very, very under-rated as a rock guitar player.
That's one of my favorite songs of all time!
@@joelpanettaonline I always hear people praising the hell out of John Frusciante or Kirk Hammett and I tell him, Chris Hayes smokes those guys. But the Chili Peppers are "cool" and Huey is considered square, But you know...
biff0101. VIETNAM dedication song.
@@RICHBLACKCOCK I know
They stay in the pocket better than any band I've heard
I agree, when I see a band live, I don't wanna "hear the record", but I also wanna recognize what I'm listening to, these guys did it as good as anyone
Just so damn tight. The harmonies ALONE are unreal. AutoTune got NOTHING in these guys!
Yep; Huey is the all American, down to earth, out of this world frontman.
Never heard Van Halen huh?
@@thedadyouneverhadchannel3544 Van who? And these guys do 3 part harmony (sometimes 4). VH was awesome. Different style. Nowhere NEAR the harmonies of these cats. Drop back 5 and punt.
So who’s still Rockin’ to Huey Lewis in 2020!
2021 here!
2023 here!
The coolest thing about Huey was when they approached him they wanted to get rid of Bill Gibson, the drummer, and Huey said no way, I wish I could find guys commiited like that. Long live the news!!!
they wanted to get rid of Bill Gibson? Who did? He's a fucking human metronome!
Huey Lewis and the News were my first concert. It was around this time, but at the Cow Palace in SF. At the opening, Huey was lowered onto the stage in a cable car replica during Heart of Rock n Roll. So badass.
Such a great group of musicians! Being a bass geek, I wanted to be as smooth as Mario. Haha. I remember being impressed by Hayes’ guitar solos. Definitely some chops there.
Anyone that hates on this band, just doesn’t get it, man. More for us.
That’s great that you got to see them in their prime. Wish I could’ve too. Especially in San Fran.
And you’re right about the haters. Anyone who writes these guys off as corny or a fad, doesn’t really know their fantastic music or stellar musicianship. Definitely one of the greatest bands of all time.
Weirdly enough, my dad taped this on a VCR on Showtime in 85'. We still have it on VHS.
Have you played it recently? Is it the full show? This here is an abbreviated version. Be great to see the whole thing.
MedusaMayflower No, same one. Sorry about that bro
Thats fucking tits man! cherish that VCR, if this gets deleted off youtube at least you'll have a VCR of it. :)
@@alexm_5150 oh yeah! we’re not getting rid of it anytime soon!
@@gregmable Awesome! Great to hear it ! 🙂
They were so tight. Really impressive. Total pros
Fantastic concert !!! Pure classic rock perfection !!! Huey Lewis And The News rules !!!
Ah.....harken to the days when performers had talent, and loved what they did, Huey and his News are in a class of their own....they all sing, play more than one instrument when needed, and genuinely have a good time on stage. Huey is one of my all time favorite harmonizing bands to boost my spirit when i've had a trying day and need chilling out, Hoping he will create another album..... I'll buy it in a heartbeat!!
They actually released a new album a few months back called 'Weather' (an indirect continuation of 'Sports'!). A Pretty good album, with great songs that it's as if they're meant to fit into any demographic out there! However, it's not meant to sound like their 80s stuff.
It's still the closest they've sounded to what they did in their hayday since.. 1991's 'Hard At Play'!
They've been touring all these years, and have released 3 more albums since the early 90s (1994, 2001, 2010) that even though they're extraordinary in every single way, while having the HLN soul, musicianship, playing, they lacked the classic HLN sound of their first few albums.
Their new album (that unfortunately only has 7 songs, due to issues with Huey's hearing) is a 'true' Huey Lewis & The News album!
@@christosstamato527 awesome Chris.....thanks for the update, I try to keep myself informed of my favorite bands upcoming material and performances especially the older bands where the members are aging and/or dying off and may not be around much longer like AC/DC ( who I have never seen live, but if they tour for the Power-up album, it might be my last chance to see them in their most complete original lineup since Back In Black)....but somehow I didn't know about all that Huey was up to lately, I guess maybe lack of press coverage. I'll have to look for that Huey album, it sounds like it's a good one. I'll have to look it up and see when they're coming to the city of Chicago again. I'll have to Buy me some tickets ASAP...... assuming we ever get live concerts again with this Corona crap lingering around.
What a great band. Wish I realized that when I was 17 I could of seen a great show
They are at their height right here. This footage is pure gold.
Chris Hayes such a fab guitar player,he should have got an award for that.
Wow, what a moment in music history. So great we have this footage of Huey and the guys during their peak. :)
If only time travel existed.....
Music - 10. Show - 10. Professionalism - 10.
Unbelievably underrated band! They can teach a lot the present generations.
Classic Huey Lewis & The News and Tower of Power. What's up fellas
+Miguel Salas ..."u got it bro... "huey lewis & the news w/ tower of power horns... they jam!"
"ur'makin'smiles!"
Dam. They are by far the tightest band I have ever heard. Excellent all around musicianship
Huey Lewis and the News is way too underrated.. this band is phenomenal!!
ToP adds so much to these songs... the horn stabs and swells during "If This Is It" are fabulous.
Great crowd there that night looked a fantastic night
I have been listening to Huey Lewis and the in all my life and they are my favorite. Watching their concert in you tube lift my spirit and will never get tired of listening to them. They are and will always be number 1 in my book. Epic.
They are the tightest band I have ever heard. All of them always perfectly on beat and never miss a note and they all give 100% every song. Great musicianship
What a great band! Sensational horn section, including the amazing Marc Russo on alto sax.
Man they sound flawless live!
This was over the top of their game!
fun to revisit this show after 30 years. man those horns!!
esp Trouble in Paradise, Johnny Colla and Marc Russo (from Yellowjackets) at 9:48
The Tower of Fuckin' Power!
A very tight band! Woefully underrated!
This video just forced me to create a new playlist, "Greatest Concert Performances I've Ever Seen"...wow, so tight as a band, with enormous talent.
He's great. Humble too. I was supposed to see him perform live in Clear Lake, CA in 2003. He had a health crisis & the show was cancelled. He did survive, thank goodness. I almost certainly will never be able to see a live show of his. Too bad for me. For whatever reason, I perceive him as a blend of the styles of Tower of Power & Robert Palmer. All 3 so sweet & out there with their music. Always a fan. Best wishes Wuey.
Huey Lewis is a freaking beast!
If I could play drums like Bill I would wear tennis shorts every time I played lol that guys a complete powerhouse monster 💪🏻💪🏻 on drums 🤙🏻🤙🏻 I freakin love his style of playing 👍🏻👍🏻
Got to see them in 1991... what a show!
The drummer seems cool. Like an appliance salesman, or a TV sales guy. All these guys represent good taste and not trying to outplay each other.
They were incredibly tight and represented some great musicianship. They complimented each others sound very well without trying to steal the spotlight, thats why they sound so great. And all of them had something interesting about them. Bill Gibson (drummer) always look like he had a nerdish tennis player look to me, Mario (bassit) had the stereotypical bad boy image, etc.
Chasers yes the drummer is very tasty
Yeah Bill Gibson is Cool
Looks more like a Tennis Pro in this concert
@@kpax45 I was thinking the same thing too. But that's fitting considering the album is called "Sports". Haha.
As a teen in the early 80's I was in awe of their harmony, they are phenomenal live!
Classic band
I can’t believe how great they sound live. Wow.
one of the greatest albums ever
Agree! We all had it!
Fore was an absolute masterpiece right after
Great band....
Had the pleasure of seeing this group in Halifax, N.S. in June of 1986. As expected, they were awesome! 1 check off my bucket list!!
Tremendous, such a great and unique band....very hard or imposible to find a similar sound and show at this times...
How i miss the 80s!😂Heart & Soul wow! Chris Hayes, brilliant guitarist🤩👍🇬🇧
They stand the test of time and just seem better and better...great harmonies , tight arrangements, great songs and..........CHRIS HAYES... always takes the song to exalted levels. As a guitarist, he is unique and he always inspires...rockin', funky, tasty, fiery and very melodic and harmonically knowledgeable. Stef Burns is a great player in his own right, but , for me just doesn't quite have the magic and charisma that Chris has. Thank you Chris for your eternal inspiration!
no backing tracks just flawless harmonizing! Not many bands sound this good live, especially now a days!
Saw them so many times in high school. One of the best bands ever-especially live!
It never hurts to augment your band with the TOP horns! What a dream combo.
nice shorts billy boy
HLN have always been a band with class! From their clothes to their music. More bands of all genre should take a lesson from them.
I want someone to show me a cooler guy than the bass player. He's my spirit animal.
Mario Cipollina, fyi
Paul westerberg
You can never go wrong with Tower if Power-period!
Saw them live in the 80's, 90's, 2000's and 2015. Rocked the house every time. What a run..
I have always loved this band
I own this still on vhs best concert ever made and looks like so much fun wish I coulda been there to experience it in real-time every time I watch this I feel like I’m back in the awesome 80s this is when music was good the planet was awesome and everything seemed perfect ya know like nothing could bring ya down man I miss those years born in ‘81
Goddamn I miss the 80's.
That was phenomenal, what a voice and the happiest music I know
top pop rock '85
Thanks so much for the tribute to our Viet Nam VETS.great tune Huey
Love some Bill Gibson on drums...the pocket and groove he has is DEEP!!!
32:31
the small lick there just Sounds so damn great.
Excellent
I hate myself musically for how I never recognized Bill Gibson's brilliance.
I've played piano for years without realizing what a metronome he is!
Totally! I remember wondering at times if the drums on "Fore!" were sequenced, and then he breaks into a great fill and dispels any doubt that it's real. I see these guys live for the first time in a week and a half. :)
thromboid and it was Bill Gibson that the record companies wanted Huey to get rid of. Huey had already been through that and told them no because he knew he was great!
+thromboid how was the concert?
The concert was an absolute pleasure - and sorry for my late reply. Great sounds and vibes filling the green valley in the New Zealand countryside. A little sad that Chris and Mario were not in the line-up, but I cannot complain about the quality of the show!
What's the old saying?...."Fills give the thrills, but a groove pays the bills!". Gibson lays down the groove like a clock.
Very excited to find this. Many, many years ago, I found this in my local video rental store. I played in on my "HI-FI" stereo VHS player and recorded the soundtrack onto a cassette tape. I was the only one around to own this audio track. I had forgotten about it till I came upon it this morning. Thanks for posting.
The joy of rca cables!
