I'm 70 years old and heard plenty of bands and Huey Lewis and the news were the rock band of all times. I just love the whole band.
This was my “Beatles on Ed Sullivan” moment. Before “Sports,” the News was a super tight pub rock and new wave rock band. So fucking good!
I don't begrudge them the success they had from Sports and on, but 80-82 Huey Lewis was something special.
The News at their best...doesn't get any better...sound as great and relevant as ever...timeless..... VOCALS HARMONIES ARE SPOT ON....and seriously , how freakin' great is Chris Hayes?....criminally underrated guitarist!!!!
Yes Sir!! He can also shred with the best of them, but I like his tasty rhythm playing as much as anything!!
Oops! 02:30 Watch Huey... I thought this sounded too good for a LIVE performance.
A concert without mobilephones and LED-lights. I love it!
39 years old (2021), and this still feels like what real music, blues and rock is all about! Timeless!
Im 28, Wish I was alive to see them in their prime in mid 80's. I listen to alot of music and wow. They always impress. Im on a binge watching all their performances.
Chris Hayes damn.....
Chris Hayes the kid on guitar= legend
I always loved the Kid's guitar playing, great harmony vocals as well. Helluva nice guy too.
This band was the REAL DEAL.
Huey Lewis is the COOLEST! I hope this lineup will get back together for another album, or two.👍
As good as "Sports" and "FORE!" were, this show proves that Huey and the News were creating and performing great music long before they hit it big commercially. Personally I think that their self-titled album and "Picture This" are just as strong as their two "HITS" albums.

Chris is such an underrated guitar player
Saw these guys live in Philly early 90’s. One of the best live shows I’ve ever seen. Chris Hayes is one of the most under rated players.
I totally agree, Chris Hayes is such a great guitar player and a great inspiration
1982...
I was 14 years old and didn't have a care in the world other than filling up all my time and having an absolute blast. Sighs.
I was 12 in 1982.And had never heard of this band until 1984.That year did produce the greatest ever tv show though and that was Knight Rider. I am 53 now and still love the show and Huey Lewis and The News.
It amazes how tight the harmonies are. Just a phenomenal band to see live.
John Burke It’s difficult to tell if they’re using backing vocal tracks or not. They sound so spot on that it makes me think they’re not actually singing.
@@justinsena5757 They are using backing vocals, first track you can hear it after first chorus huey steps away and the backing track continues... but I dont think they used backing when sports came out
Recorded tracks.. Oops! 02:30 Watch Huey... I thought this sounded too good for a LIVE performance.
Their earlier material is so damn good, fantastic band
Huey lewis is a legend I admire him I wish I could see him in person he play music when I was growing up
"Change of Heart" and "Stop Trying" are WAY underrated songs. Great concert.
i wish there was more videos focusing on Chris Hayes as a guitar player..
Saw them in 85’ for the first time. Then once more in the late 80s, and three times in the early 90s. One of the greatest live acts I have ever seen. Phenomenal musicianship. Totally unique sound. Vocals were off the charts! Truly one of the greatest bands in the last 40 years.
As a unit these guys were so tight, and this is just three years in. They became more polished, but the raw and at times frenetic energy (especially from Chris on guitar) in those early days is really something to behold.
Years later, I really miss their early sound.
I got turned onto them around FORE and wanted them to do more like SPORTS. I wish the band had worked more on songwriting. Their success really came from many songs they didn't write.
You can tell Chris Hayes must have been very into a mod or punk style of guitar playing back then...His style of movement definitely changed by the time Fore came around.
@@7Earthsky He actually came from a jazz background and wasn't particularly into rock growing up...and he joined HLN at a really young age. So, I think he was still trying to figure things out.
Sad how far MTV has fallen! The network was great at one time, and this is proof!
82 or 83 is when I first heard them. Had their first album on cassette and wore it out. Before them, I didnt like modern music of the 70's and early 80's. I liked music of the 40's and 50's that I heard on my grandparents' and parent's records better. Huey Lewis' blend of blues, doo wop, and Motown with modern rock really resonated with me. Their a capella songs prove what talented singers they are. Just incredible! The a capella they do on each album and concert were what most impressed me and made them my favorite modern band when I was a kid.
When MTV had MUSIC and great programming!
I have this on VHS! Now Ive seen the band 100 times. Huey Lewis and the News changed my life
The Only One kicks ass! Chris Hayes is a guitar master!
He grew up from a young age training as a classic jazz guitarist, and hating rock and roll, literally. Then he was recruited as a rock guitarist after a change of heart (including chicks).
Yeah I agree , but the Gibson sounded great , then he changed to strat type guitars !
The Kid is great, terrific harmony singer as well. Such a good guy, and he looks like he's about 15 here, lol.
Huey and his giant eyebrows! LOL I think I fell in love with them when this aired. Still love them to this day!! I've seen 15 concerts over the years and they are awesome! It makes me really sad to think that due to Huey's hearing loss, I might not see them again. I love them so much!!
@@rickrollstudio9319 Yes. But the songs were recorded prior to Huey's hearing loss. Album supposed to be released in September. Can't wait!
Saw them in 85 on Sports tour. Phenomenal show. Tell me a little lie and buzz buzz buzz were excellent.
Cold Saturday night in 2020 finds me here. Hell of a show.
Chris Hayes is my Hero! The best guitarist to play outros. Keith Scott comes second. 👍
A Band like a well oiled machine. Timeless Quality!
Man, when I found out Huey had to give up the sing it broke my heart.
What a genuine talent.
Health be with Huey.
Cheers.
This needs to be out in Blu Ray 110% !
This is how a live concert should be! Real musicians playing jammin songs.
Even if they might have been playing their instruments, the vocals were a track. You can see huey miss the end of a lot of lines by leaving the mic too soon as his voice keeps on coming out of the speakers.
@@morsteen Vocals were probably overdubbed in post-production. Ozzy's "Speak of the Devil" had the same thing going on; ADR done in the studio to cover any vocal dips or feedback.
Huey lewis ever one including me loved ur music over the years you should be in the hall of fame
My favourite band of all time! Mostly wrote and produced all of their material. Saw them twice when they appeared in Ireland
And just think, they'd begin recording Sports shortly after this
"Do You Believe" right into "The Only One" - amazing.
On the radio day in and out what a time that was seems like a different world I was in 10th grade! Lol
Huey Lewis & the News was my first concert back in 1985. I thought live music was the best thing ever after that night. Little did I know it was because this was a group of excellent musicians in their prime. Many bands I saw after that paled in comparison. Saw them in '86 & '87 too. Great music & even greater band.
No matter if you're listening to Picture This, Sports, Fore!, or Perfect World, etc, etc, one thing is for sure. Their performances are CONSISTENTLY good and they always sound really tight! Even up until now! This is a great upload, thanks!!!
Have to agree. Just pure music talent, no tricks just balls out rock. these guys powered through the 80's and soundtracked my teenage years. It just seemed like they were always there rolling out hits with that great clean sound.
Agreed, HLN were as they are now, a total state of the art band. No frills, no bullshit, just pure musical talent.
And when you heard them live, they were every bit as good as they were recorded! I can attest to that! No "auto tune," just raw, straight up TALENT.
I sure wish my mom gave birth to me in ’80 or '81 because there's so much I missed.
@@drummingdanny84 I was born in 1980, and I wish I were born several years earlier so that I’d be old enough to appreciate the songs when they first came out.
I am always regret not seeing Huey Lewis live in concert when he did not have hearing impairments.
They were so DAMN TIGHT!!! THAT shows just how DAMN good they are!!!!!
Chris Hayes = The most underrated guitarist in history!
@@grahamjarman In the HLN "Behind the Music" episode they show clips from an interview with him. He's pretty funny.
THIS BAND HAD SO MANY GREATEST HITS HUEY LUEY AND THE NEWS
Give me a Dolorean to see this show live, please !!!!!!
But you’d feel something was missing as Power of Love wouldn’t be recorded until 3 years later. I’d also miss Heart and Soul (although it was originally recorded in 1981 by Exile, yes the group that sang Kiss You All Over) as well as Stuck With You.
This concert is on the tv on the back cover of the album sports!
If these guys were legitimately from the UK-they'd be ONE of the most critically acclaimed acts of the last thirty years-they'd be thought of like Elvis Costello and the Police. However, as it is they're not acclaimed and wont get into the rock n roll hall of fame. You watch any concert by these guys-simple fact is they are an incredibly killer live band with fantastic songs. The songs seem simple but are actually crafted excellently-truly a great band.
yeah, I really think that too. They could have easily gone unnoticed as well but - -
2 Major things formed their particular character and success.
1) Huey Lewis returning to the Bay Area after Clover with the plan just to successfully gig with a local band in Cali with no band changes or high expectations.
2) Manager Bob Brown aggressively pushing their Sports Album and creating a hit single before that with producer Mutt Lange's 'Do You Believe In Love'
I'd never seen the band perform live pre -1984 so this is awesome stuff. And even though this may not have most of their big hits in it, it's still a terrific concert & is right up there with their later tours.
Totally; all these tracks are from the first two albums [1980/1982], most of which is now regarded as their B-catalogue!
A former neighbor got me into these guys when I was twelve back in 1982. They’ve been my favorite band ever since. Saw them live in 1991. It was the most fun I’ve ever had!
young and energy-sh so much power and rockn roll Huey Lewis and the News is the BEST!!!!
48:44 and damn! Bill Gibson could swing!
26:40!!
I was such a fan of Chris Hayes
If i had seen this concert as a kid, i would have passed out like a Beatles Fem fanatic😅
He was always a bitchen lead but that solo was one of his best.
Can you imagine if these guys came out of England? They would have been even more legendary. I miss their early sound!
Yes all kids out there..there was a time when MTV means Music! This people was an awesome band. Huey lewis and the news was great. Love the drummer !
Loved it! Wish they were still touring all the original guys
I saw Huey Lewis and 1984 when he came out with the sports album he had a bunch of songs off that that was popular Stevie Ray Vaughan was warming him up it was at the Oklahoma City Zoo Amphitheatre May 12th 1984 what a concert I saw Stevie Ray two more times after that before his helicopter crashed, I saw him in 1986 with the Fabulous Thunderbirds warming him up then in 1989 with Jeff Beck warming him up
Wow!!Thunderbirds too?Jeff Beck ? He and Roy Buchanan were friends hence the song Beck wrote for him : Cause We've Ended As Lovers..SRV awesome. So many losses.
They sound so fucking good
As, yes. When life was fun.
So cool. Thanks for posting. Huey Lewis in their prime here. Amazing. Huey is so underrated as a vocalist. The band is tight here. I wish MTV would go back to their original format. Actually play concerts and videos again with VJs.
I love this song thank huey lewis I would love to meet u in person
Saw this exact concert at the grandstand of our local fair in July 1982 (minus Tower of Power Horns). They played 2 shows that night. I was just shy of turning 10 years old. My mom took me, and after seeing those 2 shows that night, we were fans for life. And I always had such a crush on Chris Hayes :) Their first 2 albums had that rock vibe that I love so much, more than the other albums. Saw them twice more in 1985 and 1987, and they had Tower of Power with them for those shows. HL&TN are a killer live band.
When MTV was worth watching!
This concert was so impactful to me when I was a kid. I must have watched it a hundred times back then (we taped it). Best version of Change of Heart too! Really takes me back. Thank you so much for uploading this. I will be enjoying this for many years to come.
That's a pretty unique intro with paper barker! I dig it!
So good it's crazy. Love them all so much!
I’m still amazed how tight the band was and vocal quality.
My God, back when MTV was about music....what a concept.
What a great concert! Loved every minute of it. I think this is the only time I remember seeing Mario sing on one of the a capella songs!
Had to watch it again, the coolest concert ever
Bill Gibson is one of the best drummers ever. He and Phil Rudd of AC/DC are so "in the pocket" it is ridiculous. Great inspiration of a drummer to me.
After The News fame wore off and the band was in limbo for a while, I ran into Bill at a club my band was playing in Nashville, Tn. I asked if he would like to get up and play my drums on a song or two and he agreed. I was very disappointed. He seemed totally out of his element and after the first song, asked me to take the sticks back. I noticed that he had put on a lot of weight and just wasn’t right. Most of my students could’ve played better. Don’t know what was wrong with him that night but I hope that he’s better. He was a very nice guy.
@@devinw5150 He was extremely generous to even play one note for you. Don't judge the guy for spontaneously playing for you with 0 preparation
Yes he is.
Yknow how Bill Gibson wears a drumming gloves on obe hand, because of that half the kids at my school wear cyclibg glives on one hand, we are all fans of Huey Lewis and the News at my school despite us being young high school kids in 2019, this just goes to prove how good music never dies
@@devinw5150 Must not have been the real Bill Gibson. Bill Gibson has perfect meter in his sleep, not to mention rhythm.
@@defiverr4697 It was Bill. He even talked about some road stories with Huey.
Too good.
Huey lewis I love your music I hope your are safe from the fire that burning in the state that r u originally from huey u be safe and ur family and ur musician too god bless
I just wished I would have gotten to hear them Live.
I've listened to HLN since those early 80s days. Some of My Lies definitely could've been a hit if released as an A-side. It's such a great song!
I can't wrap my mind around the fact that this type of shit is NOT released on DVD. I am so fucking grateful that CZcams exists, but I want to own this on DVD. I want this for my collection of concerts. Huey and the boys are a fine example of why this type of shit should be available for purchase. Goddammit, I know theres a market out there for this, but noooooo, if the corporate conglomerates can't make a zillion dollars off of a product, then they don't give half a fuck. Well, thanks for listening to my rant. Enjoy!
This band should be in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. They can’t even get nominated. What a joke that place is. Great musicians and songs.
The Only One and Some Of My Lies Are True (Sooner or Later), back to back, are stellar. Two of my all-time favorite HL&TN tunes.
Huey I pray for u and ur family I would like to meet u I love ur music I hope that the fires don't comes around ur house you be safe
A little lie man is a great song this album Picture This is just as great as Sports man oh man I wish I could have made more memories for myself in the 80s damn damn damn the eighties the soul of me forever til I die lets have all weekend 80s party
Second best concert of the band just before 1984 rockplast in germany. Here, before sports, they were almost uknown to the world, but this concert is so great showing better sound that studio songs
Awesome band I love ❤️
When my kids are having to wheel my into the room....I'll still be mumbling.....CHRIS HAYES....THE KID ON..GUITAR.....!!!!!!
Oh shit right before the "you really know how to piss me off" line you can see huey missed the last few words when he turned around and looked at the band but his voice kept singing. Damnit.
Love this performance still remember when it came out
Corría el '89 y con sólo 5 años empecé a admirar esta gran banda y aún hoy me fascina... Aplausos desde Argentina!
Great concert! What a tight band. Also, as with other comments here, guitarist Chris Hayes is an underrated guitar player, not a flashy one but works great with the band. Enjoying every song on the video. Thanks uploader and keep safe everyone 🙏
Back when MTV played music......
These cats just sound soooo good live, take notes kids, that's how ya do that..xox
When I asked my dad what the best album to listen to was, he said "Sports" but the more I listened to these guys I really thought Picture This was their best album
Awesome show! Love all these songs. Only wish that they played Whatever Happened To True Love.
JUST THE BEST BAND OF ALL TIMES.
It was just better back then. And by 'It'...I mean basically everything.
2020 not that bad mate. I listen to Huey Lewis in online school with the 60 odd other kids there and we had a food fight with one slice of pizza and i took lolly cigarettes and pretended to be Mario Cipollina so yeah 2020 i hope 2021 brings more online school
@@highschooltroll5281 Remote learning does not teach any social skills. You gonna take a remote date to the Prom? Remote workers are easily replaced. Remember that. And trust me on the 80s. I was there.
I was a kid when I recorded this off MTV. I watched it constantly. As big as Sports and Fore! were, this concert gave me a huge appreciation for the stuff off their first two albums. They were my first favorite band and I was just starting to get into the drums. I didn't get my first kit until I was a teenager, but I would use my mom's knitting needles as drumsticks and air drum the entire concert. Bill Gibson was awesome!
Huey Lewis and the News back in good old days of April 1982.
The true story of how Uncle Charlie's got it's name...in the early 70s it was a Gay bar called The Electric Banana 🍌 The club was about to go out of business, not to many customers. I was moving to Malibu, so I was looking for a cool place to throw a big wild going away party with a good dance floor and DJ. Most places wanted lot's of money to rent the space, I then came across The Electric Banana, after talking to the owner Jeanne we made a deal, two drinks for the price of one till 9 oclock, she went for it! The club was in the Paradise Shopping Center, we filled up the whole club and parking lot that night...I had a lot of partying friends back then, the dance club rocked big-time that night lot's of beautiful ladies dancing to the loud Disco music 🎶 The club made over 2500. dollars that night! (Big-Time back then) Jeanne asked me if I would like to stay and help run the club, I said "No thank you!"So my good friend Mark said he was willing to help run the club. They changed the name of the club naming it after her Uncle Charlie, he was her main investor of the club. They started having live bands on Mon nite's, Huey Lewis and the News band took off big-time creating a loyal following and the rest is Rock history...now you know 🎸Rock On...
Great to know that history. '79 - '81 I was drumming in bands (Sharp, The Pastels, Von Trigger) who played Uncle Charlie's and I remember always having a good night there.
First thing I ever recorded on our VCR. Still have the tape and wouldn’t think about getting rid of it. Thanks for the upload. Greatest concerts I’ve ever seen too. What a phenomenal band.
Back when MTV was fit to watch.
Never did.
There was no cable in the country.
Had albums and awesome stereos!!!!!
In the house AND the car.
Who stays home on the weekend when all the fun was getting to and in the bars!!!??!!!!!
