I think that her version is beyond sublime. Enough of the banter about whether Smith's version is better or not; she's paying homage to him, so I wouldn't expect the song to sound identical to his version. It's sad when fandom causes an automatic rejection of a beautiful cover.
Obviously this is very good but there is something about the way Elliot Smith sings the song that can just never be matched by any other artist. The song personifies alcohol addiction, and the lyrics describe this "person" seducing someone into becoming an alcoholic. Elliot Smith's way of expressing that, through the softness in his voice, is done in a way where you can feel so many different emotions in the same moment as you listen to it. It's very difficult to explain, but it's definitely more than just sadness. This cover is beautifully done though, and I'm just expressing my own opinion. Everyone is entitled to their own, which means we don't need to fight about who sings it best.

I agree, MP's version has far more of an original slant and it's darker and more broody. Personally, a spoilt rich kid from Scandinavia will never be able to do this song justice. Sorry Agnes.
