    Have you ever asked yourself: what preposition should I use - on, in or at (when talking about places in English)? Ever wondered - Is it ON the street? IN the street? At the house or in the house? And how is it possible that people use both AT and IN for the same thing? for example 'in the office' and 'at the office'?
    Here's a tip that helped me STOP making MISTAKES, simply by giving up on memorizing rules and starting to visualize and understand the differences between those words and the way they relate to space.
    It's easier than you think!
    We'll also talk about at vs. in, in vs on and on vs at.

      Thank you, Hadar! It was very helpful!) My examples: Where are you? I am at the car. Here it means that I am nearby my car, not specific where, if I say I am in the car, that means I am.a driver or a passanger. We are at the park- somewhere near park, if we are in the park' we are actually inside. I am not sure I am right but still I decided to write this comment.

    I usually find it helpful to make reference to dimensions when it comes to prepositons of place (at as one-dimensional, on as two-dimensional and in as three-dimensional). With some illustration, this is easy to grasp. Where I think it's gets confusing is when these prepositons combine with a verb like 'work'. We can apply the 'x on the map' concept and say work at home, company, school, etc. But on the other hand we use 'in' with nouns like sector, industry and department, which are not really places.
    Exceptions and anomalies are the killjoys of learning a language! 🙂

    @daophilac Před 2 lety

    Thank you for the explanation. Now I think I can use them much more correctly now lol.
    Here is my take about the "in the office" vs "at the office". Imagine you are taking a poop in your office's toilet and suddenly your friend calls you. You may want to say "I'm at the office" because that gives your friend the vague idea of where you are at the moment. You definitely don't want to say "I'm in the office's toilet taking a poop". "I'm in the office" is just wrong because you are not physically inside your office.
    But not everywhere you can both use "in" and "at". For example, you can't say "I'm in a bus stop" because a bus stop doesn't have a definition of inside or outside. You can only say "I'm at a bus stop".
