The 40mm was popular long before you were a twinkle in your mama's eye.
😂
Can you name some old 40mm lenses?
@@sexysilversurfer 35MMC has an article with a list. Also the classic Konica. Exa may have also had one.
I've been shooting 28mm Nikon lenses on Nikon APS-C cameras for about 15 years , which equates to 42mm , so yeah it's nothing new.
Was always a fan of 40mm. My fave lens on M43 was the lumix 20m 1.7 and now on all my Canon gear for the last couple of years, the 40mm 2.8 on the 6D and RP. The field of view just really suits my photography.
Great video; thankyou!
The Canon 40 mm is outstanding. As is the Nikon Z 40mm. Love the FOV. Prices are awesome too, especially the Canon.
I've been using the 27mm f2.8 WR + X-E4 for 1 year now and I can't get enough, incredible quality, didn't complain even once. The best part is how small it is; with the camera I carry it on my pocket.
How do you like the X-E4?
I have this lens and used it a lot on the Canon 5D as I always wanted a small as possible camera-lens combo. It‘s a good lens and I like the in-between focal length, if you plan well the shot, the bokeh can render very nicely. But I detected some inconsistency in performance after a while of using it. Now on the R5 I use the RF 28mm which like very much, too.
Definitely noticed everyone getting into the 40mm focal length ! Great video as usual James , you're gonna hit 100k subs this year.
Thank you so much Shaquille!
The EF 40/2.8 is a great lens. It’s my primary lens on my R8 and EOS 50 (Elan II).
40mm is really close to the FOV of 35mm. And people really wouldn’t be able to distinguish the differences in photos. I’d still want the RF 35/1.8 for stabilization, and the smoother background blur. The EF 40/2.8 can have harsh blur, doesn’t focus very close, and AF is a little slow. It’s a great lens for the money though, and sharp too.
I'm going to get mine out and give it a go on my R!
I love 40mm 2.8. I used it for another 6dm2, and after switching to EOS R, I'm not even going to sell it, because it's too cheap and too good to part with it. It's amazing how different it really is from 35 and 50 mm
It really is a great lens! Definitely worth keeping. Thank you for watching
I’ve recently, during a Black Friday sale, bought a 20mm f1.4 OM Systems prime lens, which is of course a 40mm full frame equivalent. I like it aa focal length, preferring it to 28 and 50mm primes. They all have their place but I find that 40mm just suits me for more situations than any other.
The OM 20mm f/1.4 is indeed amazing - optically as well as when it comes to build quality and size. I wish Canon could do something similar for RF or RF-S.
One could use also Canon RF 28mm f 2.8 on a crop body (1,6x crop factor) which makes it 44,8mm lens. Another option is to use Canon RF fullframe camera in crop mode. It's roughly the same focal lenght as 40mm (no need for adapters)
40 & 45 are still pretty far from each other though. 40 is almost indistinguishable with 35 FOV.
I was looking at the 40mm 1.4 Sigma Art lens and the only reason I didn't buy it was because of its size. I ended up getting the 50 1.4 instead but 40mm would be a fantastic focal length. Like you said, almost the best of both worlds (35/50).
I'm shocked how good that 40mm lens looks compared to the RF 35 1.8. I wonder how good the close focus is on the 40mm lens?
I got the lens despite its size/weight and god it’s an amazing lens
The Sigma 40mm was the first “serious” full frame prime I ever bought and to this day one of the best prime lenses I have ever used, I plan on making a video on it soon. The size and weight was a lot though. Close focus on the Canon 40 seems great but will have a bit more of a test.
@@JamesReader Yes please! I've had my eye on the Sigma 40mm and 28mm f1.4 lenses, because I've read about their excellent image quality . They were made without compromise in IQ, I think for filming. Size was secondary. Would love to see a vid about how they perform on the R5/R6 - just amazing IQ and bokeh, size secondary 🙂
Nikon also has the Nikkor Z40mm f2. I use it with my Nikon Z5. Great lens too. It might be the new "nifty 50".
Just ordered the Fuji 27mm. Had the old one but had sellers remorse. This new one is supposed to be slightly better although optically similar. For travel I wanted to take the 35f2 but you cant beat the size of the 27. Far from perfect but still a very good lens.
sony 40mm g f2.5 has been glued to camera since August
I recently picked up the Voigtlander 40mm f1.2 and it's a stunning lens. I've always found 35mm slightly wide so 40mm is a bit more flexible.
I really want to try that lens out, looks like a really fun lens.
The Olympus 40mm 1.4 is spectacular.
I got a 40/2 with my Nikon Zf and I’m pleasantly surprised with overall experience.
I already own the 23 and the 33 Fuji and they’re both 1.4. Now if they decided to bring out a comparable 40 mm, which is I guess around 27 mm, I would prefer an F2. There’s just not enough separation for me to justify purchasing a F2.8
Plus the X100V has a leaf shutter and neutral density filters built in.
Trends aside, it has always been my favorite focal length. Too bad those APS-C pancakes don't come with 2.0 aperture. But my MFT Lumix is 1.7 😀
I use a voigtlander 40mm on my Leica m3. Nevermind the frame line situation (mMounts don’t have a dedicated 40) this gets it done
My favourite focal lengths so far are 28 - 40 - 85 & 200. These ones offer some very distinct options.
Now if anyone could give me some primes at these, that'd be great 🥲
Not as small as the Fuji 27 f2.8, but the Nikkor 28 f2.0 lives on my Fuji camera body. I love the film look it adds to some of my photos, and it’s great for video.
I love 40mm > 35mm, but I don't have 40mm. What I do is to use 35mm, and set aspect ratio to 4:3. It becomes 37mm.
I had the chance to test many prime/body combinations (Canon lenses as well as Samyangs or Sigmas, but only on Canon bodies though), and while I had good times with all of them, I settled with that 40 mm pancake paired to a good ol’ 5D2 and a 1/4 black mist diffusion filter. Would like to try the EF-S equivalent (24 mm I believe?) with an APS-C body though.
I reckon 40mm is awesome. On my zoom lenses I use 40mm quite a bit so I need to get my hands on a 40mm at some point. Either that EF one or the Konica Hexanon one
Excellent perspective! Now that everyone is getting one I for sure will not get one ;). You know me?.....I like to swim upstream and make it more difficult, but if I do ever buy a 40mm I won't admit it was because James Reader said all the cool kids are getting one. Keep up the great content!
Have the Fuji 27mm f2.8 Mark 1.
You can clean the Fuji image you took to be even cleaner then Canon with DXO PhotoLab or DXO PureRaw using Deep PRIME. The r is the new Deep PRIME called xD Deep PRIME but I just use the old one.
DXO is so good even Micro Four Thirds looks amazing all the way up to ISO 6,400 on my Olympus OMD E-M1ii and that's a old camera now.
Hi James! I would like to buy canon r6 ii or R8, but my biggest worry is the dynamic range in video. I do 80% video 20 % photo.. what you think? I love your videos anyway.. ;)
Is that Canon lens for cropped filter cameras? That's what I thought I read online. I have an R8. Would it still be okay on my camera?
The 40mm 2.8 is for full frame cameras. It works great on the R8
@@JamesReader thanks James!
Easy enough to use the cheap(ish) Canon RF 35mm f1.8 and crop in if you want to. Wider if you need it and lets in more light. 5mm isn't a big enough difference for me to spend money on a 40mm
Very true! I’d still like to see an RF 40mm pancake just for the size and weight.
Voigtlander 40MM F1.2 oh yeah - BTW all of CHINATOWN was apparently shot on 40MM.
Would love to try the Voigtlander!
I have one but not my favorite lens, I very seldom use it, I use a lot of different lens...It is a sharp and versatile lens...
The 27mm lens was so sharp I could tell she was wearing contacts 8:45
2:13 It became a habit of mine to spam that shutter button like 5 to 6 clicks. then i remember its just my wife who doesn't change pose. 😅
I'd love a 40mm pancake RF lens if Canon would get around to it. That or IBIS in a small aps-c body up I can use the 28mm they've already made. 😂
r7?
9:18 Magenta-Alert on the Fuji side!
Looks nice.
love these photos
Man I really don't like the new Canon RF non L lenses. It's crazy that old 40mm pancake lens is sharper than the rf 35mm 1.8. It also seems like the 35mm lacks micocontrast compared to the 40mm. It's like Canon is intentionally making the cheap RF lenses worse than they should be to incentivise people to spend the big bucks on the L ones.
yes canon please make one for RF! I love this lens. An update to the max aperture to something 2.0 - would be nice too, although I doubt it is possible
R7+28mm 2.8

😂
Everyone’s doing it bro! Might be sold out because the Uk did something called brexit that made it a shithole
