The One-Year Reign of Viserys Targaryen

  • Viserys II Targaryen only ruled Westeros for a year, but helped keep the realm afloat as Hand of the King during the reigns of his brother (Aegon the Dragonbane) and his nephews (Daeron the Young Dragon & Baelor the Blessed). There were a lot of idiotic Targaryens during this time period, and Vizzy's own son, Aegon the Unworthy, was the worst of them all. In all ASOIAF lore, Aegon IV might be the worst king ever. Does Viserys deserve some blame for the outcome of his son? Did his son poison him to take the throne? Did Viserys poison Baelor to take the throne?

  • @archmaester6594

    My personal headcanon was that Viserys knew what a monster Aegon would become and was going to disinherit him and then raise his grandson, Daeron, as his heir.... With a stroke of a pen, Aegon would have lost all his wealth and privilege, so he murdered his father. He was half-Lyseni. It is possible he was aware and had the means to purchase the Tears of Lys. This may be the true source of animosity between Aegon IV and his own son Daeron. The heir his father truly wanted.
    Not to mention, as king, Aegon IV was free to do as he pleases... as a prince he had to keep his mistresses a secret from both Baelor and then his father. He had to 'give up' Merry Meg and their children on Viserys's orders. As King he could do all he wanted without repercussion and his duties would be delegated to Hands who have pretty daughters...

      totally makes sense. what would the realm be like if dearon had been king right away instead of his father. great that's what. also in 170 dearon had his first son bealor so when viserys becomes king he already as a great grand son to follow dearon. which points out another factor why didn't aegon secertly kill his son dearon and mabye my deamon his hier right then. the answer is dearon kept having sons who had sons of thier own which sir duncan once says that dearon's son secured house taragreyan for all time. a century at least.

    Viserys II was goated. Only problem was keeping Aegon IV as his heir over time when he kept on getting worse. Aside from that, a solid Hand and a capable King, with few faults.
    That said, on a side note... unpopular opinion;
    I feel people give Daeron the Young Dragon too much hate. Not only was he very promising as a young king, it was said he and his uncle would've been a decent pair while Daeron was still around.
    I truly think it was a shame he died so young, and he and Daena would've been quite the power couple. Would've solved so many problems going forward tbh.

      Honestly if he’d had even one member of the Kingsguard by his side from the beginning then I could really see him growing up to be a better man. A real example of chivalry and stories of Kingship beside little Vis as he grew.
      Honestly Targaryen strategy sucked. They went from winning not just with dragons but on the battlefield, taking Six kingdoms… to losing even when they had the advantage. I can understand the Mad King messing up but Rhaegar was an absolute fool during that time. Imagine if the Kingsguard were used to their full potential and spread out to protect the heirs to the Iron Throne.
      Instead Jon, Elia Martell and her children, the Mad King, and Rhaegar himself were all killed and Viserys and Dany went into exile.

      nah both septons and maesters despite Aegon IV a lot mainly because of his intentional misrule during his reign(based on the in-universe book Lives of Four Kings, Grandmaester Kaeth bashed him a lot for example, Kaeth suggested that rumors about Crown prince Daeron’s parentage were likely start by the Aegon IV himself because their disagreement in dorne’s policy and in his last years the septons literally pronounced it a judgment of the gods when he’s rotten alive)

Once Daemon I Blackfyre was born they would have nudged Aegon IV favoring no if that son over Daeron and I believe might have whispered to him to legitimate all his bastard knowing with time this could be used to spark a rebellion that would weaken House Targaryen more.

Commodus learned his father meant to pass him up as Emperor for Maximus, so he smothered him so he couldn't make it official. I could 100% see that being the case with Aegon IV, who Viserys clearly didn't want to be his heir, if he knew how bad he was already

  • @cipher48
    @cipher48 Před 2 měsíci

    One thing I don't unferstand is why did Viserys II passed over his niece Daena in the Iron Throne succession. He is closer in the line because of his mother's claim. If no woman can be the regnant monarch, then clearly Rhaenyra's line would be ignored in favor of another one; Velaryon or even Hightower, who ended up marrying Daemon's daughters

    • @sleepyguy236
      @sleepyguy236 Před 2 měsíci +4

      Thing is, aegon iii’s claim is actually come from his half uncle, aegon ii. so, he’s “legally” heir of him not rhaenyra although appendix refer him as rhaenyra’s son and viserys ii also once his brother’s heir when aegon iii doesn’t have any children.
      Another point is, he’s eldest member of house Targaryen at that time and very experienced, have tons of alliances while daena lacked this due to maidenvault stuffs, this is likely the reason why small council choose viserys ii to be their new king.

    • @cipher48
      @cipher48 Před 2 měsíci

      @@sleepyguy236 was it the Small Council who chose him? I always thought he became king out of his own initiative.
      Now, that's nothing against Viserys II, but didn't Cersei and Tyrion think that Myrcella is in the line of succession and now is Tommen's heir? Because if that is so, then this law of succession is messy as hell

    • @CrusaderChris
      @CrusaderChris  Před 2 měsíci +3

      Doesn’t do much good trying to apply that strict a logic to it. Westerosi succession is meant to fit the story, not any stringent inheritance laws. Viserys was king because Baelor and Daeron had no children, because Daena and her sisters were not considered fit to rule, and because he’d already ruled (and produced heirs) for over a decade.
      Things like one person’s “line” being discontinued from the succession forever isn’t really gonna happen in ASOIAF. For example, Aerys was deposed by Robert, yet people still saw Viserys/Dany as rightful rulers. Aerys disinherited Rhaegar in favor of Viserys, but Aegon will still use his claim over Dany’s in TWOW.
