Every time i stand there looking at all my basses and trying to figure out which one i want to choose, I somehow always reach for this bass. And like you said, the overall aesthetic of this bass is absolutely gorgeous! Its worth every penny and in my opinion, one of the most underrated basses that fender sells. It's have one, it's really a great bass. I love vintage guitars and basses but bought this as a backup/workhorse which wouldn't be as expensive, fragile or irreplaceable as a real vintage.
    I've been blown away, tonally and feel wise it's just so good for playing in a band. It's also light and small which makes traveling for gigs/tours just that bit easier than a big full scale bass. The finish doesn't look cheesy and I like that being nitro, it will acquire further wear through use in a genuine way.

      I have the La Bellas and love them, but curious about the Fender strings. Do you have a link where I can find them? I know the string through Mustang needs 32" medium scale strings, but can't find the Fender ones...

    • @karlzickrick8483
      @karlzickrick8483 Před 2 měsíci +1

      @@BradleyHansonPhotography Fender ships the JMJ with long-scale Fender flats installed (they don't make a short or medium scale set of those strings). Not ideal in theory, but I haven't heard of issues with it from JMJ players or others who have installed them on other short-scales. The main potential problem is that the E string's full wind is wrapped around the tuner to a point which can put stress on a flatwound which is generally a more fragile string than a roundwound to begin with, not to mention that it also screws up the string alignment behind the nutslightly which can cause the string to bind a bit in the nut while tuning. With the tension of a long-scale bass this fat wrap around the tuner could well cause the winding to break or loosen, but with the softer tension of a short-scale bass you can often get away with using long-scale strings like this.

    • @BradleyHansonPhotography
      @BradleyHansonPhotography Před 2 měsíci

      @@karlzickrick8483 Yes. I tried the Fender longscale flats on the Mustang and they worked fine with no issues. Pretty much identical in sound, tension and feel to D'Addario Chromes to my ear...

    • @karlzickrick8483
      @karlzickrick8483 Před 2 měsíci

      @@BradleyHansonPhotography Fender strings are also made by D’addario, but I have found the Fender flats to be distinct sounding from the Chromes in my own experience though they do have a similar feel. Chromes to me sound brighter and somewhat midrange-scooped then mellow into a rounder tone with age, while Fender flats are tamer up top when new but with a more midrange-forward and even potentially “crunchy” (with the tone control turned up) tone that seems to stay pretty consistently as they age. I’ve only ever compared them on a long-scale bass though, the Mustang tends to scoop out the mids naturally so the difference may be more subtle on a Mustang. I definitely prefer the Fenders to the Chromes on long-scale basses, and like the Fenders on short-scales I’ve tried them on enough to stick with em (though I have Labellas on my Mustang these days for their signature “thump”)

    I understand the people who dislike road worn instruments. . . that they want to earn the scratches. Totally get it. But in real world use, wouldn't it take decades for a guitar to get to that stage? If you like the way they feel and play as well as how they look, why not start enjoying them now?

  • @watcherofthemundane

    You did a review of a squier mustang a lil while back that you lightweight trashed. Other than aesthetics what are the practical differences? What makes this thousand dollar bass so much better than the three hundred dollar version that looks almost identical?

    • @nootwithana
      @nootwithana Před 2 lety +2

      I remember it being mostly lackluster sounding stock. Often times the higher end instruments are finished better (especially neck and fretboard) so they can sometimes feel better than the lower end instruments

      @@nootwithana I only bring it up because I bought one of those squier mustangs second hand a couple weeks prior and was pretty impressed with it. I've been playing for close to 25 years,it's not my first short scale but it was my first mustang and I was surprised how well it played and how good it sounded for in spite of being a contemporary squier. A roommate I had a few years back had a squier bronco that was super shrill and these newer mustangs blew me away. So I was surprised when Patrick's review was like "eh,they're whatever"

      the MIJ has a 38mm nut width instead of a 41mm. Also, the pickups are not exactly the same. I own a 1997 MIJ and have played with the JMJ multiple times. Both are great. IMO, the pickup is better on the JMJ. However, I find the MIJ neck more comfortable. You can always replace the pickup on the MIJ model, with Nordstrand one.

    I love the bass but i don't like 'the road worn' finish. I'm not into the 'relic' thing, unless it's relic-ed by me through honest playing and natural wear. It's like buying faded jeans with holes that are manufactured that way and not because they've previously been 'road worn'.
