Hi Patsy, just found your tutorial on fabric dying. If using PFD do you soak in soda ash first, or just dampen? Thank you

You will want to soak it in soda ash whether it's PFD fabric or regular fabric. Don't skip that step!

Thank you for video. Do you sandwich your quilt with water soluble thread? If so which do you recommend.

That is regular polyester thread. It's very easy to remove it once the quilting is done because the stitches are fairly long.

I love your videos. How do you machine baste your quilts?

    • @Ernpats

I spray baste them whenever possible because that is the most thorough way I've ever been able to baste. Machine embroidery applique (MEA) quilts are made from blocks that are appliqued/embroidered on an embroidery machine, then pieced together, placed in the quilt sandwich, then quilted. MEA quilts are very heavy because there is stabilizer underneath the applique shapes and there is very dense embroidery surrounding and inside the applique shapes. If they are larger than about 60 in x 60, their weight is such that I don't trust spray basting to hold them together, so I send those to a long armer to baste for me and then I quilt them. I have them use any polyester thread of their choice (polyester is a "slippery thread" so it's easy to remove), and request that they set the stitch length as long as is possible. It is very quick and easy to remove those basting stitches as I'm working away on the quilting. I do NOT use water soluble thread for the basting. (It's very expensive and not worth it since it's so easy to remove the polyester thread.)
