  • Are you having any issues with applying Stone Coat's Ultimate Top Coat?
    Let me know in the comments below if you have any questions and/or the success you have had with UTC.
    Having great success with the Ultimate Top Coat I wanted to share how I apply it, in this case to two cornhole boards. The Ultimate Top Coat provides an additional layer of extremely durable protection over nearly any surface coming in a Natural (satin) and Gloss finish. UTC is applied over all of my countertop projects for its durability as well as being fully cured after 48 hours.
    Chapter Breakdown:
    0:00 Title description - How to apply Stone Coat's Ultimate Top Coat Gloss with an additional experiment.
    0:10 - Explaining the project
    1:08 - Explaining the UTC Gloss mixing ratio and method
    4:30 - Applying the UTC with the wet roller
    6:00 - Backrolling with the wet roller prior to dry rolling
    6:25 - The dry rolling process
    9:00 - Explaining how the UTC Gloss will dry
    11:08 - Applying Gloss over UTC Matte experiment
    The experiment is applying UTC Gloss over a sample board that had UTC Natural applied prior and was fully cured, as well as applying UTC Gloss over a sample board with just epoxy. Instead of sanding the UTC Natural completely smooth I simply scuffed it with 220 grit as I did the 2nd piece that just had an epoxy finish. I wanted to see if the sheen would be similar on both, or different due to going over the UTC Natural.

    Keith, you are the master at applying the Ultimate Top Coat! Every time I get ready to apply UTC I stop and watch one of your videos so I get it right. It's too easy to hurry the last step in a nice project or develop a bad habit. Great explainations. Your calm application helps take the stress out of that 15 minute time clock! Thanks for all your help!!!

      Thank you for the kind words! It's so easy to let the UTC stress us, when it doesn't have to. I absolutely LOVE the product, and once you get it down, you've got it down.
      Thanks again and I'm so glad the tutorials have been helpful. Mission accomplished 😁.

    Concerning the UTC texture of the High Gloss.
    I tried a number of rollers, like a few foam-type rollers to see if you can get a smoother finish to help get rid of the orange peel look. They all pretty much look the same as the roller used by Stone Coat Countertop. It appears you use the same mix I did in the amount of water to use.
    However ... the paint roller handles that I ordered with Microfiber DO NOT roll very well, which came from Stone Coat. You end up pushing the top coat around rather than rolling it. *I ended up getting new handles lowes so that they roll better!!!* Stone Coat needs to fix that ... and I don't recommend the handles they sent me. But the ones on their website and the ones I ordered are not the same ... black and yellow are on their website ... what I got was just plain green and is really tight to get the rollers on, causing the problem. It was okay for paint primer ... was still pushing rather than rolling, for the flaws can be sanded out, but it's not OK when applying the UTC for you don't want any flaws at the end.
    Anyway ... when you show us at the end of the video at 11:08 it appears the camera makes it stand out more than what it actually is and gave it an orange peel look, which made me be reluctant to apply the UTC with my project. After testing this it does have a somewhat texture but it is not the orange peel look that appears in this video. It does bring down the gloss a tad but it still looks great and I love the extra protection it offers ...

      Thank you so much for your comments! Regarding the rollers and roller frames, you're correct that they can make a huge difference! The best ones I've found are the 6", 1/4" nap rollers from Home Depot, but even with those, I've come across some that do not roll freely on the frame. As soon as I put the roller on the frame, I check to be sure they roll freely, so they don't "drag" like what you describe. The ones from Stone Coat I won't use because of the purple line on them that transfer to the surface. Plus if they don't roll freely, it's too difficult to return them.
      Regarding the end of the video, yes the texture is a bit more than normal, and that's for a couple reasons. One, the UTC was already setting up because I used the same UTC as I did on the cornhole boards and two, I mixed it up a bit thicker as the added orange peel helps the cornhole boards not to be so slick.
      Thank you for your comments and feedback and I'm glad you like the UTC as well. I think it's a fantastic product, it's just not as DIY friendly as it could be, for those who are using it for the first time. Which is why I made the UTC application videos, in hopes it can help others.
      Thanks again!

      @@kcdcdesigns Thanks, I will check out those nap rollers at Home Depot. Anyway, concerning the UTC ... I was speaking about the texture concerning the close-up view of the sample boards ... not the cornhole boards. From what I can remember you didn't show a close-up of the cornhole boards, but you did with a couple of sample boards at the end around 11:08. I was a bit shocked at the texture (looks like orange peel) and I simply didn't like it that much. The camera for some reason made the texture stand out too much. Glad that I did a few sample boards, the texture is not as bad as I originally thought ... so I will use the UTC high Gloss for my project.

    • @kcdcdesigns
      @kcdcdesigns  Před 8 měsíci

      I was referring to the texture on the sample boards as well, being a bit heavier for the 2 reasons I mentioned. On a normal countertop, it's much less but with the Gloss, a slight bit of orange peel is unavoidable.

    Great video...one question though. Did you sand the boards at all before applying the UTC?

    • @kcdcdesigns
      @kcdcdesigns  Před 9 měsíci

      Thanks and yes, absolutely! I lightly sanded with 220 grit and I always use a red ScotchBrite pad on the edges, to prevent sanding through with the 220.

  • @margomyers2640
    @margomyers2640 Před 4 měsíci

    I can still see quite a bit of roller texture. Previously, on tops like this, I would sand down to 4000. I wish there was a product that did not leave any texture.

    • @kcdcdesigns
      @kcdcdesigns  Před 4 měsíci

      The Ultimate Top Coat Gloss leaves a slight bit of unavoidable orange peel appearance, and we've yet to find a gloss top coat that doesn't. For me, it's always shown, and explained to the customer what the final finish will look like, so they know what to expect.

    Hi Keith- I applied the utc natural on my center island last night around 8am and I can see lap lines this am. I will wait the full 24hrs but I don’t think they are going to go away :( It’s a large piece, 10’ by 3.5’ with a center sink. I don’t have a helper so I did it on my own. I am fairly certain that I was so worried about going quickly that I did not use enough product. It is dark, like your conference room table so it shows more than my lighter desk piece. My question is: How long do I have to wait to sand with 220 and reapply the UTC? I’m really hoping I can do it tomorrow am as I really need to be able to have the sink set next week.

    I am having same issues of perhaps not enough product applied. It also seems that little pecks of blemishes/particles, etc are unavoidable even if the rollers are washed, brushed out and dried. The piece will have to be scrubbed down with an abrasive pad regardless. Has anyone tried to apply an automotive wax or ceramic coating over the UTC?

    • @kcdcdesigns
      @kcdcdesigns  Před rokem

      Hey there! Not applying enough product is probably one of the biggest problems people have with UTC, but like many others, once you have it dialed it, you got it.
      Regarding specks and particles, one of the things I do now is to make a homemade lint roller by putting tape backwards on a roller and going over the surface which picks up all that debris. Now my finishes are smooth, with no nibs! Game changer, IMO!
      FYI, I personally don't wash and re-use my UTC rollers. To me, it's just not worth the risk.
      As far as automotive was or ceramic coatings, there are people who will apply the ceramic coating to their countertops but I personally do not and here's my reasons:
      If it needs to be re-applied periodically, that means the product is transferring to foods, wash cloths, etc.
      It's meant to be used on automotive finishes, so it is food-prep safe? It may depend on the product being used but not that I've seen
      Lastly, IMO it's an unnecessary step.
      Again, that's just my opinion and my business decision to not use it.

      @SavDog262 Před rokem +1

      @@kcdcdesigns thanks for your response. I was able to rectify some of the issues I had with it. It’s not perfect, but what I did was scuff up the surface with a purple pad, used polishing compound. Still had some nibs on the surface. So I wet sanded with 1000 grit, polishing compound another time, buffed it out and put a ceramic coat on it. It’s not perfect and I can see the matte fluctuations in the product. At this point, I don’t see the need to sand down fully and reapply the UTC. I’m not a fan of the Matte finish as it does not resemble polished granite. Which all granite is polished to a gloss finish. So maybe this particular one looks more like a honed marble or soapstone? I guess that’s how I’d describe it.

      @kcdcdesigns  Před rokem

      @@SavDog262 You described what you did very well, including the caveats to sanding/polishing/buffing the Gloss finish.
      One thing to keep in mind, is prior to UTC rolling out, all countertops had the high-gloss finish provided by the final flood coat. I still have many customers with the high-gloss finish (including my parents, over 3 1/2 years ago). So that's an option as well.
      Thank you for your comments!

      @@kcdcdesigns yes sir, I am going for the second countertop tomorrow. I’ll make sure I saturate the roller really well. I think that’s where I went wrong the first time. I had some marks or areas that looked like they didn’t have as much product than others. I don’t think there’s any getting around the nibs and random particles. The wet sanding, polishing, and ceramic coat gives it a silky smooth finish. I don’t think anyone but me would notice the difference. Overall, I think it’ll be fine. Thanks for the advice. Cheers
