A totally fabricated story. The dog is Nipper, and the painting was done by Francis Barraud from Liverpool in England in the late 1800s, and entitled "His master's voice.". In 1899 the Gramophone Company purchased the painting from Barraud, and the American affiliate decided to adopt the painting as its logo, and renamed the company HMV. Byt he way - the dog's name was Nipper, and belonged to the painter Francis Barraud's brother Mark.
In the US, the Victor Talking Machine Co. in Camden, NJ got the Nipper logo, and it became the company’s first mascot. You can see the Nipper logo on so many products including record labels and so on. When RCA bought the Victor Talking Machine Co. in 1929, the Nipper logo stay put under RCA Victor.
