So I've played 34 matches in a sub so far. It was common for me to get one hit and be blown up within the first few minutes. I watched this video and learned some cool stuff. Now I'm getting 11 to 18 hits, one or two destroyed ships, and I'm living to the end of the match. Of the 12 matches I played today, i was 50-50 win-loss, but even in a couple of the losses, I had hits and kills and survived to the end, just time ran out. Thanks for this video.

This seems more like a mechanics only video, while it doesn’t really explain what matchups you want to avoid, as submarines are heavily countered by other submarines and sonars, so you want to know what ships have sonar, and simply evade them at max depth if they ever target you.
A rule of thumb is all german ships have sonar.
And all cruisers.
With a few destroyers that you might want to learn by heart.
The best approach is to stay clear of a flank where they have a sonar destroyer or submarine.
These tricks are nice, but most often pre-pinging enemies isn’t a great tactic, as they’ll just turn away. Instead, I’d suggest shooting the torpedoes at the predicted location of an enemy, and when the torps are 6 km from their target, ping the enemy centre. This way they don’t have enough time to evade, and your torpedoes avoid slight misses.
Pinging should only be done beyond 7 km range, as you’ll otherwise take a lot of damage from depth charge planes. Instead dumbfire torpedoes, even if you miss, at least you won’t give away your location at such a close distance.
Only use the alternative torpedoes on battleships and carriers.

Nope, went from around 30 hours a week to maybe playing once in a week. Subs are not worth dealing with. I will say they have made my War thunder account see more use than it has seen in a few years now.

I'm also beginning to seriously doubt the claims of these amazing homing torpedoes. My U-69 more often than naught just misses outright despite double pinging. destroyers, cruisers and battleships juke them easily if they are heading straight for you. It only works when they are running away in the opposite direction or have their repair down.
The issue now is these homing torps can be seen from the moon, I have no issue juking them now. I believe for most at 1.4km they stop tracking so easily for a DD to dodge. Also I have noticed that RNG is not nice to torps anymore. Thanks for watching.
Well that was interesting. I don't play subs much, don't like them much but when i do play them i suck. Watched this just out of interest and had one game. First try i killed a destroyer at the longest range after he had seen the torpedo's coming and gone to hide behind an island. Ended up with 2 kills and we lost, i had a destroyer and 2 other ships onto me at close range. They could not touch me until i ran out of battery.

Nice video, but you havent addressed the most common issue here. "SONAR HAS BEEN CLEARED" which basically is, you throw torps, 2-3km before reaching target they clear sonar, torps lose target of course and then you end up with a bunch of planes airdropping you because you gave away your position. And trust me those demonic light cruisers will hunt you through enemy battleship fire just to get you!!! Also torpedoes for some forsaking reason lose track if the ship is out of your visibility even though he might have a sonar lock. Also we have NO COUNTERMEASURES
OK so this response just came through today???? So for me I'm scare of any sub player...LOL. that said I watch ships like a hawk to see when they DC. This will give me time to land torps however I really don't ping at all. Thanks for watching.

I’ve played 12 games died twice both times through my own stupidity. What I have trouble is getting round the map. 80% of the time every ship I’m going for dies before I get there.

Love the video but still struggling:
1. Games are too short; most last 10 minutes. Getting into position takes time. By the time on the enemy flank, the game is half over without me being able to do much if any damage. This is especially true for maps with many islands dotted around; which leads me to the next point.
2. Islands are huge impediments to my torpedoes. I do try and curve them around but it usually ends up in failure.
3. Most ships are smart enough to clear the ping right when the torpedoes are detected and then they maneuver out; so the salvo is wasted. I guess I could try pinging until they clear it and then launch but that's still wasted time if I'm at max range which I can ill afford to waste when other vessels begin closing in since subs are #1 targets.
4. A lot of positioning on the flanks takes up valuable battery time unless I immediately move out of my starting point. However, I am denying my team crucial intel on enemy positions, especially when I'm at I'm spawned in a group without a destroyer nearby to scout.
5. one of the biggest reasons I struggle is because I'm not good at pinging ships further than 9km. It's even harder for me vs enemy subs I spot that dive deep. Maybe you can do a tutorial on accurate pinging. Almost impossible with hydro up unless ships are REAL close because ship movements aren't displayed in real time.
6. Is it just me or are aft torpedoes in the U-69 super inaccurate compared to bow torpedoes? They appear to take a lot longer to curve in when fired at 90 degrees.
7. Most maps begins with sub vs subs within the first 3 minutes due to all subs spawning in opposite ends of the map. Would be more fun if they were spawned on opposite corners.
The biggest complaint really is 1. Submarine mechanics of stealth, evasion and positioning is ponderous in length compared to other ships, which world of warships is geared towards in terms of pacing. Not nearly long enough for a 10 minute game. The second biggest is sub vs sub. It's not only NOT fun but we all end up wasting battery time going deep to avoid a lock on one another instead of hunting surface ships. When sub surveillance is up, we both activate it, giving away everyone's positions on the map and subsequently that ends up with both subs dead as we take incoming from DDs depth charges and bombers. I especially despise maps with six subs.

Sorry for the delay in response, your points are very well written. I love points and inputs like yours.
1. I agree and MM is driving me nuts.
2. It can be hard, but with practice I'm pretty good now as well on the mini map I watch my my torp progress to ensure there going to clear an island before I ping the ship.
3. I very rarely use the ping now, however I would ping once or twice an see what the enemy does and fire only 2 torps at a time. If that helps.
4. When I'm flanking I stay on the surface only a DD or CV will make me dive.
5. This one takes practice. I now use non-homing torps on ships and homing torps on subs. I would recommend using the training rooms to test on bots that can move high intelligence but not arm so they can hurt you.
6. I'm not sure about this one I'll have to go test.
7. Ya I agree with this a lot.
First anything more that 2 subs is just wrong, also I do not like 2 CV matches as well. I just did a sub vs sub vid today so please have a watch. I would recommend only using ping on subs and non-homing on everything else. The training room is your friend.

Thanks a lot. I haven't been playing much at all since subs came in so this helps. I actually have no idea how close I need to be to lay an effective DC attack, and embarassingly, I have no idea what "shot-gunning" actually means.
I'm glad it helped. Shot-gunning is when a DD and sub are heading at each other and the DD is waiting for the sub to shoot its torps at the last minute. Subs usually miss get depth charged and die. However, if you wait and time the DD turn and drift you can torp them and kill them. Thanks for watching.

On sub vs. dd situation I always go for shotgun kill. Especially early in game. Killing one dd and surviving (even with 20% hp) gives my team advantage, becouse opposing team now have one spotter less. If my hp is extreamly low after that encounter I always may snipe bbs from more then 6-8 km (outside their deph bomb radius). But I had no idea that torps may manouver that much that You shown in this video. Great stuff!

Great question. Radar, CV's, Hybrids. Also I feel it could level the playing field a bit in that subs would have to push in to score torp hits, making them more likely to get spotted. Thanks for watching.
@@normalguyofthenorth If you ever happen to have the time mate, would you pretty please make a video about the correct use of non-homing torps, because that's the playstyle I like best but as I mostly play ranked/brawl opponents don't sail in a straight line nor stay still and torping in the 2-3 miles range is nigh impossible because of hydro/radar. In a random environment, the moment you are spotted you're good as dead so shotgunning is only viable at the very late game. Cheers.

My torpedoes don't stay linked to the ping location. When I shoot they start of with a little green line from the nose of the torp to the ping on the ship, then they lose it. I'm shooting from depth, so I don't know if that's the problem, but it sucks. All distances, from nearly shaking hands to 7-8 km. Any thoughts? Driving the S-189 if that matters.
Couple of things, the enemy could be clearing your ping? S-189 has a very limited ping time of 30 seconds I believe. Also tracking stops at certain distances for certain types of ships. (See below from WG) Also if the ship was maneuvering homing torps just can miss like non acoustic torps. Try her in the training room hunting down a single bot ship on high ability. The range at which homing is switched off is 2.1 km for battleships, 1.2 km for aircraft carriers, 720 m for cruisers (360 in case of double sonar ping effect), and 240 m for destroyers and submarines (120 in case of double sonar ping effect).

Want a real tip for dealing with moving targets that can speed juke or out turn your torps as a sub? Just slightly under lead you torps and ping the rudder section of the ship. Very High chance you will hit. The only way to avoid is to time Dcp correctly, stop and turn in simultaneously; but you become a sitting Duck as a surface ship.

Unfortunately every time i throw torps they always have DCP up and i only get about 5 torp hits per game despite following this video to the letter.

Do all subs have homing torps? I just got the British Undine T6. Trying to learn how to play it but it’s a bit tricky atm.

As far as I know all subs have homing torps, but some higher tier subs add an alternate torp that is non-homing, longer range (usually slower) and a lot more powerful.
You don't have to use ping, but if you do, you can use it late, i.e., launch torps in the right direction first, then ping later, as they near the target. If the target hasn't changed direction *, don't even ping.
The more often you ping, the easier you are to find, and that's a bad thing.
* Never go in a straight line if you're detected. Always change direction or speed all the time when actually engaged with an opponent.
Is there a vid or link that explains how a complete beginner to subs can use them? I don't really get how they are used and want to see if it's something that will appeal to me before getting a sub.
I would recommend looking at my Sub vids, and in July I did sub month for all subs. That said WG has vids on basic sub skills as well my replays on subs can show you how to play them. Take your time and you will do OK. Thanks for watching.

This video is helpful but i still cant get hold on the subs. I survive the battles but everytime i launch my torpedos the ship im firing at turns and the torpedos miss. Even when i use my solar i feel like im just giving away my positon because the torps turn a couple degrees at the slightest and give up. Then the ships i was aiming at fire 5 depthstrike planes and im dead. What can i do better to prevent this
Subs can be hard. This whole month I'm doing nothing but sub videos, I'm working on a more modern tips, trick and strategy set of vids that will be out during the next 2 weeks. @@normalguyofthenorth You cant properly beat subs without compromising your intended role as any of the surface ships, DDs and cruisers especially. The game isnt a 1v1 game, so whether or not you know how to close in on a sub is irrelevant in the absolute vast majority of cases, since surface ships usually cant engage due to spotting and other surface ships shooting the hell out of them. Hence you are left with a class that outspots everything, and the best counterplay to it is to run away. This class is absolute trash for the game.
You dont counter subs as any surface ship atm. Bad sub players sure, but decent ones? No.
I dont know but i play sub for few weeks, and somehow all ships just neutralized sonar ping very often, its not like in training room, where ships just standing and not moving anywhere.
To be honest I very rarely ping, I go to the flanks and be patient and just shoot torps when the enemy is broken up I then go for one off's and get a bit closer... attach and leave, but I don't ping. Thanks for watching
About 20 matches in a sub. My biggest issue is battery conservation. I get in and get torpedoes on target but 2:36 is t enough to get out again without having to surface and take major damage. Averaging one ship sunk a match so this is a limiting factor for me. Suggestions?
first off averaging one ship sunk is pretty good. I always insure I have enough battery to get away even if I'm yolo in. I would recommend yo go into the training room and put a ship in with no movement and not armed and on the surface and at periscope time how long it takes you to get out of detectability. last max dive and run away, as far as you can and try not to surface when the batteries die. Did they change the way the Subs operate? I just can't get a fix on how to play them. Almost every round I end up being detected by some random destroyer or sub that lights me up up and then dumps DC's all over my head. I follow the "run on the surface as much as possible model" but that just seems to not be working. Also, my torps NEVER hit. I can ping a target all day and my torp will miss 90% of the time, they certainly aren't bending around islands. My dummy fire torps are just laughable. Granted, this is all VERY realistic historically speaking since (especially America's) early torps had a nasty habit of detonating early and alerting EVERYONE, missing, not detonating at all, or looping around and sinking the submarine. It's to the point where I just run co-op to try various strategies, but good lord Co-op is unforgiving for subs.
CO-OP is perfect anti sub tactics, however if you get good there you will be better in Randoms. I'm not sure what tier your playing most so it hard to tell, however play the T6 orT8 and not higher so you can get use to it was well I have a detail review coming out this weekend on the German line since it's changed a bit. if you want send me a replay to my email address normalguyofthenorth@gmail.com and I'll take a look. Seems I don't get the reaction with the torps like you do when I shoot them. Double ping and still doesn't seem the torps curve. The torps seem to just dissappear instead of turning back to the target. I've also seen people recommend commanders but I searched and couldn't find any sub commanders, only showed cruiser commanders. Your tips have helped me improve game play. I'm still struggling under water to hit targets after rarely seeing the grayed ships. Also have a problem with subs, nothing on radar nothing showing and I get a random ping and I'm dead.

I'm trying to play U-69, but somehow almost everybody is able to dodge my homed torps, even BBs and even if I ping after launching torps. That homing cut-off distance is screwing me really bad. Many people say that homed torpedos are unavoidable and free damage for a sub, but in my experience they are extremely easily dodgeable if you know what you are doing.
Hell, today I was chasing a BB and he dodged all my homed torps for almost 10 minutes straight. Couldn't land even one.

Lol, the only BB play is to break out the life boats...lol. Even if I'm in their air drop range, I just don't ping and use the heavy damage straight shooting torps at point blank range. Then, sail away.
@@normalguyofthenorth the life boat mechanic coming in patch 0.13.0. Lol. Actually, you might be onto something there. Kinda like in operation Aegis when you have to save the Schors captain. What if they implemented that in randoms. Pick up a down captain to come back with limited health. Reverse kill confirmed.

I just started playing and just got a sub. More often than not, my torpedoes lose their lock. Is there something I am missing? (Other than the shot 😅)

im a little confused on the destroyer vs submarine depth charge part.
That didnt really simulate what would actually happen. The destroyer would be overtop of you when he dropped. not going straight. i die alot more from destroyer DC attacks than anything else.
Also, How are you going 23 knots at maximum depth? Any submarine ive played goes 10 knots maximum
I'm in the tier 10 U-boat, it pretty fast.
I see a lot of players dive when about to be depth charged but no maneuver. basic tactics dive deep, full speed ahead and as soon as your no longer spotted turn left or right. I find it helps to minimize my damage. Thanks for watching.

Are submarines just a big inside-joke? Like, I've tried the german t6 one and out of 4 salvos not a single hit a double-marked ship that was 9km away (torps are 11km range). What's with all the community whining about them being OP and unfair? XD
Ships can still maneuver away from torps and DC as well to remove the ping. I think certain ships can be OP in the right hands. Also I believe BB's have it unfair with subs. Thanks for watching.

To be honest I have been playing subs like the German subs and pretty much for the most part is easy mode, destroyers and cruisers DCP action time is useless at stopping a sub from pinging them non stop. I destroyed two gunboat DDs in a single cap while being 5km to 3km away from said destroyers, and they can not hide when their DCP is on cooldown and The ping reveals their position periodically.

I am an elite sub commander and I can say without a doubt that this training was nearly a disinformation for young sub players to prevent them from becoming skillful with their subs. The only thing that is actually useful is torpedo curving explanation. The rest is gibberish that has no real-game repetition
