They are a bit more transparent about that one, but still gives me red flags which makes me absurdly sad(C&C is my favorite franchise and a new game good game inspired by it would be awesome)
Just like Duke Nukem Forever, this game tries copying gameplay formulas of other influential games like Half-Life and Halo while ignoring it's own unique style. And for some reason, the developers didn't learn a thing why everybody hated that game. Those who forget history, are doomed to repeat it.
They basically made Bombshell(a mediocre and boring mess) they've played Ion Fury and said "Ok guys this is too good, we must turn back to our Slipgate standards" and there we go.
So sick of this trend of so-called retro games basically just ripping of an aesthetic while not comprehending what made the original ones charming at all.
Let's all remember that the current 3D Realms that exists today has nothing to do with the 3DR we all remember so fondly. That exists today as Apogee (yeah, those guys!). The current 3DR is just the name and are closely linked to Slipgate Ironworks, I don't remember the details but both companies have the same CEO or something like that.
This is a real shame since Ion Fury was the first Build Engine game in 20 years and it rocks. What this reminds me of is how Blood II is to Blood. Interesting weapons, better graphics, came out completely raw. Waiting on Civvie to completely destroy this with Gordon clips
He said he won't review it because he already said it's gonna suck in demo from Vibe Check vid, so there's no need for any further discussion and he hoped people won't buy it the very moment demo happened
Gotta say I agree. From what i've gathered from my doom modding experience, I think the keys would be: To have a very clear vision of the project from the very beggining to prevent switching or becoming other stuff halfway in. Stuff changes overtime, but doing a "we started as an fps and now we switched into a dating sim because it's better for the story" leads to bunch of lost time. Prototype your game mechanics very early in development, that way you can test which think works and which doesn't. (A common practice in the industry, placeholder assets/art is suggested, no need to have completed ui, if the mechanic work, then expand on it.) And (this one is for someone I know) you usually don't go big on your first project, gotta learn through mistakes from previous projects before going big leagues (nailing it first try, although doable, is risky in a overloaded market where there's more game on sales than time onlife to play them) Gotta know your limits, experimenting is fine, and wanting to go big is natural, but doing both at once comes with a risk, and sucess rate is counted with one hand. (Before Daniel mullins's "Inscryption", there was a gamejam experiment called "Sacrifices must be made") I know a thing or two about it, worked on a steam game for someone else's project for about 4 years and I ended up leaving the project because no one stopped the director into adding more features and straight up reprogramming the whole game in a different language again. I was given the chance to learn the new language, but no way I can learn a programming language from scratch in 2-4 months, so lesson learned.
I had to constantly do a double take during this video because in 480p the environments look like they're ripped straight out of different franchises. I thought I was looking at Halo, Roboquest, Borderlands and Half Life at certain points.

I know that sometimes I may disagree with you on things, but I'm always here for your perspective, and I'll be damned if you didn't come through on this one.
Slipgate Ironworks have been known for releasing shit games, so I think the onus for these bad releases are largely on them. That being said, 3DR could also have been making these arbitrary release dates, preventing them from fixing what needs to be fixed... but THAT being said, Slipgate also released the Kingpin "remaster"... which is STILL a huge unfinished mess....
1:44 And they can't even be bothered with making the "Warthog" feel like a "Warthog", Advent Rising at least made a solid attempt at getting the 'Hog feel for its "Warthog" Sections and the "Warthog" vehicle even if it looks goofy. This may be more visually similar to a 'Hog but mechanically it can't be further from a Warthog, I can tell just from watching that this doesn't _drive_ like a 'Hog.
Us 'clowns' and 'idiots' of the world really have it rough when we just want to play a game as loved by it's developers as it is by it's fans, but alas, here we are.
The only deal breaker for me seems to be the glitches and bugs (that weapon upgrade breaking one sounds especially annoying), if they fix those I might consider getting it
I think if the ceiling fan gameplay was a bit more immersive, it would be a 10/10. Think about it. You pull a chain, and you don't know/remember which one is a Fan or Light. Then you pop the long chain and it gets caught in the fan. You quickly put your hand up to stop the fan before it rips the chain, and you take damage. Damn, that'd be 10/10
Huh regarding that weapon key thing, something I am working on has weapons types selectable 1-5 (1 Melee, 2 Kinetic, 3 Flame, 4 Rocket, 5 Battery) and then you press 6 for 1st row, 7 for 2nd row & 8 for 3rd row, I think something like this would be more beneficial but I see there are even more weapons here so the answer may not be so simple
regarding weapon selection: sometimes I wonder if current generation of FPS devs cared to play classic DOOM. Switching between shotgun and the SSG works exactly like how you describe it. quickswitch in Half-Life also works like that I think.
Weapon selection in the game reminds me of how Half Life 2 handles it for controllers/steam input. As long as ui is on screen it'll scroll through the weapon category, but if it's not it'll select the first weapon of that category. Also because of the layout is in a "+" shape, if you press the opposite-sided weapon category it'll scroll backwards while the ui is up making selection on the opposite side more tedious then it needs to be.
The thing is, I don't really have my ear to the ground on what's coming out. I keep to myself. And then I just get surprised by new titles that everyone has been following for ages already.
Weapon selection makes sense if you always hit the same button combo to get the same outcome. "4-4-4" always gives you the third weapon in the "4" category. The idea of making it switch to the "next" weapon in the same group sounds bewildering to me. Its been a while but isnt the shipped style the same was CS does it? Isnt the proposed style something that made people hate Redfall? At most it sounds like something that couldve been a gameplay option.
This is the second indie FPS game that are showing some bad bugs. Hope 3D-Realms see these problems, and make a updated patch for this. Even Graven needs the fixing too.
