    In regards to the ocarina in question being tuned to A442...
    A lot of “soloist” melody instruments are actually tuned a few cents sharp to stick out from the rest of the instruments in the mix - it makes a solo more *bright* without being so sharp that it sounds out of tune to the average listener’s ear. A lot of accordions, for instance, are tuned to A443. Ocarinas aren’t typically used as background accompaniment in arrangements, so it makes sense that they’d be manufactured to prioritize their use for solo melodies.

    • @munkeyinspace5331
      @munkeyinspace5331 Před rokem +5

      That’s unfortunate because that’s exactly what I was hoping to use one for - a backing melody for my acoustic 😬

  • @HbLt
    @HbLt Před rokem +20

    The overwhelming majority of woodwinds are designed to tune A=442 at 20C. This is because symphony orchestras like to hype their tuning ever so slightly in order to compensate for the deadening effect of performing in a gigantic concert hall. I can tell you that unless you have something exotic an "A=440" recorder will blow A=442 when the head joint is fully seated on the instrument. Anyway, just my 8 cents.

    Thank you! Thanks to you I bought the Night by Noble Ocarina as my first ever Ocarina (unfortunately not with your affiliated link since I live on a different part of the world) and Mr mute. Mr mute is the biggest reason why I pulled the lever. I don't have a single moment in my life where I'm in a place that can't disturb people and animals so if it wasn't for Mr mute I would never have bought this.
    I have wanted to learn to play an instrument, especially a flute for over a decade (I got a Dizi some years ago but it's too loud to learn). Now it's finally going to be possible to learn an instrument and I'm very excited for it! Thank you! I can't wait to sit at a park and just play what comes to mind. I want to play for my future children and for my wife. I love music and being someone who has never been able to create anything in my entire life despite the infinite number of awesome things I want to bring to reality, I lack talent, money and the ability to do it.
    At least with this Ocarina and Mr mute, I can finally create some parts of what I've been craving to bring forth for my entire life. Once again, thank you. I foresee a shitload of practice this week.

    I had a ceramic Zelda ocarina for the longest time. But a lot of the notes sounded airy and it obviously wasn't really meant to be played. So finally I decided to get a better one. I chose Night by Noble AC and... Wow.. just wow... I like the plastic so much more than the ceramic. Not only is it WAY more durable, but the notes are so clear, and I can achieve much higher volumes than with my ceramic one. The louder I played on my ceramic, the less clear and muddy the notes sounded. On the Night Ocarina, the louder I play the clearer the notes sound.
    I highly recommend this Ocarina, especially for beginners like me. It's inexpensive, durable (unlike the fragile ceramic types), and it sounds amazing. I haven't watched this video yet. I wanted to write my thoughts before I have subconscious ones planted in my brain from watching the video. That isn't a bad thing at all, but I wanted to write MY unaltered opinion before it gets altered 😋

    So I got the Night by Noble as my first ocarina and it's pretty decent, but I noticed few things that are bugging and I wonder, if anyone else noticed:
    - the higher notes are quite airy and need a LOT more breath pressure, specifically from the d2 upwards, it's so loud, it's almost painful
    - the eb1/d#1 sounds barely different from the e1; to fix this I need to cover the double hole on my left hand
    - the position of the mouth piece makes holding this instrument not very comfortable, I've seen other 12-hole ocarina's where the mouth piece is more angled

Again, very pleased with my purchase. Then, I wanted to have a second one, in case I broke one, and I also wanted to keep one in my car and one at home. Ordered my third Night. I was surprised to discover that this one is much more airy than the others. So much so that I really don't play it much. My question is, is there something I can do to modify it to eliminate the airyness, or just suck it up and buy a new one? (I am considering the Focalink Bravura.) • @pandaaddict2756
    @pandaaddict2756 Před rokem +2

    I got my night by noble, it's pretty good on the low notes but whenever I get to the higher ones to the highest it's very airy and doesn't sound good. Now I've tried to put a bit more air whenever saying 'too' and unfortunately it does not help it gets too screachy. So sometimes I would have to modify musical notes to lower pitches whenever I'm playing a song.
    With that being said I've combed through several written reviews, and video reviews. Most people do like it, and a handful sound like mine or have the same complaint with high notes being airy. So it could of just been a bad copy of the night by noble, who knows.
    I'll be getting a non plastic one in the near future as it's pretty easy to learn the notes. Just wished it sounded better on the high pitches. And yes cleaning is always taken care of on my end. I don't let condensation build up.

    That high "C" is actually a C sharp if my ear is don't playing tricks on me (in fact, the whole scale is almost a semitone above of the key of C). I have this same issue with mine. I have to blow ridiculously low to actually play the correct notes of the key of C. This ocarina is useless for playing along with louder instruments. However, it has a very bright tone and is really really hard to break (unlike ceramic ones) is an enjoyable ocarina to practice at home

      The material is actually different on the ivory, it's very smooth like a ceramic. Unlike the black one that feels like rubber. It's also bad at hitting high notes

      You might be overblowing on those notes - try using gentler air pressure. With my NBN, if I overblow, the E and F don't make any sound, so lighter breath pressure on this ocarina all around can help!

      @@AndyCormierYT thanks for replying to my comment though when i try to play the ‘song of storms’ on the NBN the part where it requires u to play high E and high F it sounds really airy which sound terrible. To the point where i think its really a big problem rather then a not so big of a problem. I have tried using your suggested comment by using less air but it made it sound more airy how do i fix this problem? I have been struggling with that problem since i started learning the ocarina. Its a really annoying issue idk if thats how plastic ocarinas are supposed to sound like since the NBN is my first ocarina.

      @@Follyful sorry about the late comment, I just commented as well not too long ago. Honestly it could of been a bad copy? Because I can play the lower notes just fine, it's when I get to the highest ones it's very airy with low or high. Usually if it's the airy notes id modify it to a lesser pitch.
      I'm still learning myself however will invest in a higher quality one in the near future. It's just best to use it as a learning tool, that way when you do get a better quality one you'll know how to play your favorite songs from the jump.

    • @AndyCormierYT
      @AndyCormierYT  Před 2 lety

      You can reduce breath pressure to play w/ A=440 instruments, yeah.
      However, if you'd rather have an equally good plastic AC, the Focalink Bravura AC sold either via Songbird, Stein, or directly from Focalink is just as good quality-wise as the Night by Noble but is tuned to A=440

    • @BirthquakeRecords
      @BirthquakeRecords Před 2 lety

      Being 2 cents off from standard tuning is by and large going to be imperceptible to everyone. It’s probably tuned to A442 specifically to make it subconsciously seem a little brighter in relation to A440 instruments. Also chances are that basically every instrument you play with (other than like, a glockenspiel or something) is going to be out of tune by a couple cents in one direction or another (especially a piano that might go years between tunings), so it won’t be anything that your ear isn’t already used to hearing.
      Long story short: buy it! It’ll be fine. :)
