- In today's video we diagnose the real problem with the Audi RSQ3 I bought half price from auction, is it really the tappets or is there a bigger problem?

He makes all this look so easy. I changed some coil packs and spark plugs on my Skoda fabia vrs and nearly had a meltdown 😅
I almost cry every time I attempt something on my car 😅
@@trealin4730 I dropped a screw driver onto the fan belt and it got jammed in the fan. I've actually got 2 scars from trying to retrieve it!
I have a meltdown just thinking about having to remove the under tray and wrestle with all the rusty VAG torx screws that hold them into the rusty captive clips that are clinging on to brittle and cracked plastic mounts. Such joy. Oh and the sheer ecstasy of tightening them all up when they never actually 'tighten'....
You sound as bad as me when it comes to car DIY, I tried changing my cabin filters & nearly had a meltdown.
@@RDFContent I'll have a crack at most jobs, but get very easily frustrated by the simplest things - VAG under trays being one of them! Respect to these guys that do it for a living. Took me 3 days to do a timing belt on a Passat once! Never again!!
That rod is defenetly scrap.
Crank needs resurfacing to oversized bearings. Or maybe replacement. (Might be crooked /not straight)
You should check camshaft bearings too. With that kind of debris in oil they might be damaged.
Also control oil pressure relief valve.
The sound from your previous video was probably from top end.
Piston hitting cylinder head because of huge play in bearing.
Nasty sound on startup from crankshaft big end on rod with no oil pressure.
Thanks for your interesting videos.
Piston hitting cylinder head because of huge play ? Nah....

Watched the new video yet?
Exactly as I suggested...
Cleaned an EGR valve today on a Renault 1.5dci - dropped a bolt, took 60 minutes to find it. Dean definitely makes it all look easy. Love to see “Saving Salvage Outtakes - uncensored”.
There must be a better way of getting a replacement bolt than spending an hour of your life looking for it?
flying nippers: good on U taking time to find the bolt, done the same a few times usually an extended magnet saves the day
@@curbyourshi1056 the thing is, with this kind of situation, you don't KNOW at the start it's going to take an hour to find, you truly believe at the start "oh, oops, silly me, I'll just grab that" and before you know it....
Hands down one of the best tubers that can do in depth videos while making it still entertaining. How you manage to do all this on your own is impressive. And the knowledge you have as a proper tech and mechanic is 👌 loving the content. Be nice to see you work on a exotic engine in the future
Thanks buddy 🤝🏽😊
You are brilliant! Love the way you approach things and problem solve. Hope it all goes well!
Top man taking on this. VAG TECHNIC you tube channel are constantly rebuilding these engines and they don't come cheap.
they never come cheap thats because you cannot over come shoddy engineering sold as premium there overrated and not that good regardless of the horsepower they can be made to pump out
They also abuse customer car, taking them for joyrides. They also use their customer cars for personal use and deny it when they are caught. They also damage customer cars, say they’ll cover the cost, they argue about it when you get quotes. Wouldn’t recommend them to anyone.
To a mere diy mechanic like me your skill level is very impressive. Love your videos. Great job.
You are definitely a clever man,all them parts everywhere would freak me out
Love the videos you put out keep them coming 👍
The tapping sound was possibly the piston hitting the head so more potential damage there. Can't wait for the next video on this. Great work Dean 👍
Knowledge and skill is very impressive. Good work Dean. Sad times it’s more of a chew. Excited to see the results
Hard Working Man & thats for sure. Great content
WOW ! your a brave man for taking on such a massive job
You are awesome with your builds bud. Keep up the excellent work. I learn a lot watching your videos even though we do not get a lot of the cars you work on over here in the States! 😅
Not usually interested in engine building, but this really got my attention was curious to see what was wrong with it, looking forward to the next video dean, love watching all your content.
Dean, i'm loving all the 5 cyl content. Could only laugh at your transmission removal comments.. just did rs3 dq500 clutches in my drive working on my back. What a faff!
Such a brave guy, well done and look forward to next. 👍👍👍👍
Jeez your a brave man. So capable. Looking forward to watching the rebuild
looking forward to the rebuild vids as the rs6 was great to watch you turn it around
I could see in your last vid your modjo had gone a bit and rightly so looking after a business ,Family and troubled cars..But you have bounced back quickly..Good on ya Dean
Cheers again Dean, loving the videos just make them longer 👍👍👍
an engine builder explained to me that it is absolutely necessary to systematically change the engine connecting rods when its bearings are destroyed because overheating of the connecting rod deforms it and it is no longer concentric in the part where its bearings are placed.
Good catch on the bad bearing on cyl 4. But where did the metal chunks come from that were sitting in the bottom of the oil pan?
Hi buddy
Love your videos, love the fact that you are never never defeated, always positive giving great content !!
You need a bigger workshop. All them parts lying around is kicking off my OCD lol. Love your work bro. Honestly you defo need for subscribers
There’s more sparkles in that oil that any dude at pride week 😂
Oh using one of mat Armstrong’s slogans on your thumbnail 👏🏻
Ohhhhh!!!!!! A spun bearing. That means the rod will be knackered and probably the crank too as the heat generated will have destroyed the heat treating of the crank and made the rod end weaker. New oil pump needed too as it'll have had a fun time crunching on those bits of bearing.
Number plates are looking cool!
You’ll smash it mate, you always do! If you can build an RS4 4.2 V8 and R8 alike, this should be a walk in the park!! Looking forward to it 👍👍
Jesus Dean. That's not good news, bro. That's the worst oil filter I have ever seen 😢😢. This is going to be a lot of work and pain, Dean. I feel so bad for you because you're such a perfectionist. Keep up the great work 👍 👏 🇨🇮
Great video mate. Certainly know your stuff, keep it up 👍🏻👍🏻
Cracking video that 👌 hope you can save the engine new big end bearings 😊
Great content as always.. thanks Dean
Oh man, these TFSI engines are crap. You are a great tech, I enjoy the videos. Do you think changing the oil more frequent could prevent this? Or use a better quality oil? This is a 4k fix at the Audi stealer...dealer. looking forward to the next part.
Always class content Dean👌
Just put the engine you was installing in the skoda on this RSQ3 and get a better donor for that, maybe even a DAZA. You will need every acessory for that anyway, will be cheaper to just buy another donor in better condition.
Thinking that myself. You've got an RS3 engine nearly ready to go into the Skoda. Either cannibalise that engine especially if it's done less mileage. Or just straight swop it.
Here dean here’s a tech tip Remove the spark plugs put the piston 1&4 at bdc and with a long screwdriver or something you will quickly find by pushing down on the piston crown same with cylinders2&3 👌🏼diagnose without stripping engine , your a ex tech but you maybe know that old trick
it's a 5 pot, 1 and 4 and 2 and 3 aren't BDC together,
Well done ,another big job life is not easy
Check the main that feeds that big end. Crank will probably be soft now as it's heat damaged so journal hardness will need checking
I don't know how many times I've seen Dean remove an engine 😂he makes it look easy but I know it aint
7:34 great work Dean 😆
You can fix that amongst all of your other projects. No problem at all. 👍
Might even need to replace that rod. I’m working on a Volvo T5 engine that spun a bearing and the big end of the rod was over 1mm out of round so that’s getting scrapped and replaced. I’d suggest once it’s stripped down, put the cap back on and measure it.
If the crank is within spec after polishing I have no doubt you’ll get it all fixed up.
I reckon you'll need to see a good chiropractor when you get older Dean, bent over an engine ain't gonna do you much good. As always a great video full of knowledge and content.
Filter looked like a perfect night of star's glistening in the night sky, good luck ha
CZcams subtitles described the start up noise as [Applause] 😂
Had a similar problem on a Renault Scenic Diesel. Loud top end knock but problem was big end failure on number 2. So bad there was no sign of the shell at all and the crank was wearing its way through the rid and cap casting.
Solution was a used short block from a vivaro which was the same engine.
Good work Dean
Great channel! Keep it up!
Another brilliant video 👌🏻
Great content lad!
Wow, what a project this RSQ3 has turned into! You weren't kidding when you said half price might come with a whole lot of problems. Finding metal shavings in the oil is never a good sign, and those knackered big end bearings are a real bummer.
But hey, at least you've identified the culprit now and can start planning the rebuild. It's always impressive how you can take on these big jobs and explain them so clearly in the video. Good call on leaving the subframe in place - sounds like it would have been a right headache to remove!
Looking forward to seeing you strip the engine down and assess the crank. Fingers crossed it can be salvaged! In the meantime, I'll be here subscribed, waiting for the next instalment. Good luck!
No doubt you’ll getting running like new ! And some lucky punter will win it .. 🙏
Brilliant as always 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻🇬🇧
I would say the crank is saveable and depending on a rod cost then it would be honed and then over sized bearing added
At least youve had about 6 of those engines out and fixed in the last 12 months...should be spare part city!
you can polish and micrometer crnk in situe,if ok cheap repair❤
Drop links - must be one of the cheapest parts you can get for a car, so rather than pass on the problem to the next owner, why not cut out the bolt and put a new drop link in when re-building? Also helps removing and re-fitting the engine. (you can also remove the drop link by levering the ball joint apart, then using a mole grips on the ball to undo the nut).
Hey Dean I've been watching your channel for ages now and you've given me the itch to rebuild one for myself. I have a question though, I have seen a nice Cat S Golf on Copart but it shows as outstanding finance to a leasing company. I had a look on coparts website and it says they settle the finance but I am a bit worried. Is this the case and is there anything to be worried about?
You looked as if you were prospecting when searching the oil filter! Good luck with it. 🤞
Also measure for sqaureness on the crank where the bearing seats. if it's not square it's junk.
I know it’s not great news Dean ☹️ but those silvery metal flakes in oil and filter look so pretty 😂👌🏻
Unfortunately (for you) your pain is our joy - I’m not watching a 5 min vid where you say “I bought this car and everything’s fine” 😂 Keep it up 👍
Great vid buddy
I was always with the bottom end noise.. big sad but good at the same time 😁
Don't forget to replace the dual mass flywheel!
I’m intrigued what caused cylinder four crankshaft bearing to fail? Is there wear on the other bearing shells? Maybe contaminants or oil starvation. Certainly once those metal fragments are circulating damage is accelerated.
Would be interesting to know the oil change intervals on that vehicle? Looking at the filter (black) probably to many miles, result ,engine wrecked.
For a full Audi Service history low owners crazy that happened!
Do you recon the last garage did something dodgy during the last service then to cause this Dean?
Good stuff mate
Lovely this is going to be good!
Is the locking wheel nut not in the side cubby in the boot normally under the spanner and towing eye 🤔 most Audis I have had that where it is
That Conrad has had it in the big end cap will be compromised from the extreme heat. You can see the cap was discoloured. It will definitely need a Conrad. and that crankshaft is probably trashed because the heat would’ve weakened it
Did this happen during the MOT when they rev it for a period of time to test emissions?
Another Audi engine rebuild - you will do em blindfold🙂 Great content to watch but these engines look very complicated to me!
Hi, as it's just number 4 big end bearing gone. Was it down lack of oil getting to it?
Nightmare. Just thinking about chopping my shogun in for a q7. Don't think I'll bother. Great video as always. Cheers
Keep the Shogun..!
Keep the shogun :)
Come on Dean, You’ve got this. Now go get your teddy from the corner of the workshop 😂
Keep up the good work M8 👍
Sounds perfect 😃🙄🤔👍
I give you 10% chance that crank can be saved, 90% chance the piston did not hit the head yet so my bet would be crank, one rod, new rings and a hone and obviously the top has to come off to put it all back together.
Great video Dean well done 👍
Great video
Forge it with a Nice set of proper rods loads on e**y £450 ish. And some uprated pistons and go big power
Shame you used that rs3 engine on the Skoda would it be more cost effective to use that and get a vrs engine ?
What do you think caused that premature wear as its not done much milage
Please make sure you don't leave the caps on the work bench. With them been later cut if left not compressed they will expand and potentially not correctly fit to the conrod again.
Cheers Dean
Ha I did call bottom end on the last video sorry to be right although I’ve got a feeling you love this kinda job lol
I'd have taken the locking wheel nuts off with a bolt extractor set and just order some new locking wheel nuts. Save time and would have cost roughly the same.
Spot on
Hey the battery wasn't dead, didn't need a jump start. That's a victory mate :)
Well the quick flips went straight out the window then, good luck with this one
So do we reckon because this happened so close to Audi servicing it that they didn't add enough oil and the engine ran dry?
Would explain why when you got it the engine was over filled
A lot of work there Oh well Hoppy easter
Dean what happened to the R8s
Hydraulic tappets, have had it also
VAG teknik did a good vid on oil distribution issues in VAG engines, particularly the 3.0 tdi post 2015. Hopefully this issue isn't related....
Amazed how some people can put things back together after...
Million bolts to remember right?
shame about the engine mat but you can fix it mate 😂😂😂😂😂😂❤

wtf u on about?
