“Quantity makes quality.” This is true of all art forms. I’ve forgotten the author’s name of “Taking the Leap” (an art business book from years ago), but she graded half her class on a single piece submitted at the end of the semester and the other half on sheer quantity. The quantity group made great strides in their technique and creativity, while the single piece group got bogged down in perfectionism.
Love her insight into the science of creativity!

🎯 Key Takeaways for quick navigation:
00:00 🚀 Jenny Hoyos, an 18-year-old CZcamsr, has garnered over 600 million views in the past year on CZcams shorts.
00:25 🎬 Virality can be achieved by adding a compelling story and a twist, especially with shorts.
00:50 ⏰ Retention isn't as significant in short-form content on CZcams as many assume.
01:20 🎨 Videos can be made interesting if they have a story that the viewer can invest in, even if it's about mundane topics.
01:48 🍳 Personal experiences and a touch of irony can captivate viewers.
02:32 🎣 A good "short" video has a strong visual hook that can be understood even without audio.
03:01 🔁 Effective shorts compel viewers to re-watch, increasing retention.
03:29 🖼️ Visuals are paramount. When conceptualizing a video, the first consideration is its visual appeal.
03:56 📚 Content readability should be at a fifth-grade level or lower for better comprehension.
04:52 📈 Analyzing the readability and content of popular shorts can provide insights for creating effective shorts.
06:14 🔍 In-depth analysis of personal videos can yield insights on performance and viewer engagement.
06:55 📊 Consistent uploads and analyzing retention graphs can optimize video performance.
07:50 ⏳ Every second matters in a short video. Even a slight drop in retention can impact overall performance.
08:20 🔁 High retention and encouraging viewers to loop a video are crucial metrics in the success of shorts.
08:33 📈 Scroll through rate (STR) on CZcams shorts indicates viewer engagement; an average STR is around 70%.
08:48 🎯 Jenny's personal STR is 85%, but her video retention can exceed this due to re-watching.
09:13 🔁 For a short to go viral, a 90% retention rate is a good benchmark.
09:42 🖼️ The first frame of a CZcams short is crucial; Jenny often showcases a fast-food location rather than her face.
10:37 🔄 Consistent framing helps with branding and encourages playlist viewing.
10:50 🛠️ Jenny's video framing style was developed through trial and error, taking inspiration from others before refining her unique approach.
11:44 📝 When brainstorming, considering what another CZcamsr would do can help spark unique ideas.
12:11 💳 Uscreen is a platform for creators to earn from their videos with memberships and subscriptions.
13:07 📜 Jenny has a vast bank of video ideas; from a list of a thousand, she might only produce ten.
13:46 🌱 The best video ideas come from everyday life experiences, like making a garden or saving on food.
15:09 🔍 The selection process for which videos to make considers factors like personal interest, virality potential, and feedback from trusted team members.
16:30 🔄 A video's "mechanism" refers to the element that keeps viewers engaged until the end.
16:58 ✅ Structuring a video around "three steps" or "three things" provides a clear framework for viewers, enhancing engagement.
17:11 🎬 Setting expectations is crucial in video creation. However, it's often effective to provide a twist, defying those expectations.
17:37 🎁 Example: Creating a video about giving a unique $5 Mother's Day gift, then introducing a twist at the end.
18:34 ⏲️ The average length of popular videos on the channel is 34 seconds.
19:26 📊 For optimal virality, videos less than 30 seconds should have over 100% retention. Video length and retention rates are interconnected.
20:21 ✏️ A rough script is created before filming to provide structure. This typically includes hooks and foreshadowing, which are kept within 3 seconds or less.
21:17 📢 Foreshadowing in voiceover creates anticipation, setting an expectation for the viewer.
22:12 🎼 Proper pacing is essential to keep the viewer engaged without overwhelming them. Introduce pacing breaks without breaking the flow.
23:07 🎥 The video structure includes elements like problem-solution and the "but therefore" storytelling technique for more intriguing narratives.
24:31 🔄 The creation process involves brainstorming ideas, deciding on a video topic, creating a hook, recording, editing, and finalizing a script.
25:26 📜 The last line of a video is drafted before filming to provide direction, but leaves room for genuine reactions.
25:56 🎬 Jenny notices videos end abruptly, but in a way that's appealing.
26:21 🎯 While many creators target a specific audience avatar, Jenny considers her younger self and nieces as her audience.
27:44 🤔 The interviewer is curious about how creators think of their audience, given the vast range of viewership.
28:28 📲 Discussion about short-form content on Instagram reels, TikTok, and CZcams.
28:56 🎧 Mention of bonus audio-only episodes of Creator science.
29:24 🔄 Jenny's experience shows that content isn't universally successful across platforms. What works on TikTok may not on CZcams.
30:34 ⏱️ CZcams audience prefers a slower pace, while TikTok likes quick, information-dense videos.
    31:16 📺 Jenny's future aspirations involve creating long-form content.
32:00 🏔️ Jenny feels she's reached her peak in short-form content and wants a new challenge.
32:55 💸 Surprisingly, money isn't Jenny's primary motivator in creating content.
33:52 🤝 Longer content forms a deeper, more personal connection with viewers due to extended time spent.
34:06 🌍 Jenny acknowledges that her long-form content might cater to a different audience than her shorts.
34:22 😂 Jenny recounts a humorous experience with a young relative who was surprised by the existence of long-form CZcams videos after being familiar with only shorts.
34:48 📺 Jenny observes that there's a distinct audience difference between those who watch shorts, long-form videos, and those who watch both.
35:17 🎥 Jenny shares that not all her shorts audience transitions to her long-form content and attributes this to audience preference rather than CZcams's algorithm.
35:45 👀 While some shorts creators blame CZcams for low views on their long-form content, Jenny feels that the creators themselves might be responsible for this disparity.
36:00 📊 Jenny mentions she averages 10 million views on shorts and 50k on long-form videos.
36:12 ❓ Jenny contemplates on things she believes about CZcams without concrete data; believes sharability of videos plays a role in their success.
36:42 📈 Cites an example where one of her shorts had a share-to-view ratio of 20% and a scroll-through rate of 92%, which she deems exceptionally high.

This is both amazing and depressing. 600M views in one year is crazy! She’s such a fantastic content creator. CZcams should reward such creators much more than they currently do. Assuming an RPM of $0.08, 600M views will get you $48k. From that, she pays her editor, who is probably not cheap considering her appraisal of his skills. Then she pays taxes. What is left resembles employment a few notches up from minimum wage.
For someone her age, that is still good money. But considering how thoughtfully and meticulously she goes about making shorts, I wish CZcams could figure out a way to reward such amazing creators who generate an astronomical amount of views for the platform. She absolutely deserves it.

I plan to look more at the stats and get into the perspective of my avatar more to get a feel for what makes sense on my recording artist / music channel. Thanks again!!

Allow yourself to immerse yourself in it as it arises while remaining detached from outcomes or expectations. At the beginning, see yourself as a sponge. Simply consume this content because you find it interesting, and make mental notes of those things that you found particularly intriguing. Then, start your own journey of trial and error. Remember those things that caught your eye before and see if they can be applied to your situation. That's it. Naturally, one or two things will most strongly draw your attention. You will focus on those to the exclusion of all else once you have become resolute.

🎯 Key Takeaways for quick navigation:
00:11 📊 Jenny Hoyos, an 18-year-old CZcamsr, has achieved remarkable success with shorts, garnering over 600 million views in a year with an average of 10 million views per video.
01:08 🌟 According to Jenny, making anything go viral involves adding a compelling story and a twist, especially in the short-form content space. A good story can make any topic entertaining.
01:20 👤 For Jenny, personalizing content and creating a sense of investment for the viewer is crucial. Having a personal why or goal in the content can engage the audience.
02:32 🎣 Jenny defines a good short as having a strong visual hook, something that can be used as a title and thumbnail for a longer video, and an engaging story that keeps the viewer watching and re-watching.
03:14 🧠 When generating ideas, Jenny often sketches or visualizes what the video's first frame should look like. The visual element is critical in creating an effective hook.
04:10 📖 Jenny uses a readability checker to ensure her content is understandable to a fifth-grade level or lower. She learned this from analyzing thousands of popular shorts.
07:50 🔄 High retention is vital for shorts, and Jenny aims for at least 90% retention. Rewatching plays a significant role, and she believes viewers should watch it again for maximum impact.
08:33 🔄 Jenny's average scroll-through rate is around 85%, and she encourages a high scroll-through rate by making content that keeps viewers engaged till the end.
09:27 🕒 The ideal length for Jenny's shorts is 34 seconds, as her most popular videos are of this length. Balancing length and retention is essential for achieving virality.
16:03 🔄 Setting expectations and delivering on them is crucial for Jenny. She often adds a twist to keep viewers engaged while still following through on the initial promise.
17:11 🔄 Jenny employs the "three-step mechanism" as a hook, telling viewers there are three steps or things to do in the video, making it easy to follow and engaging.
20:37 📝 Jenny Hoyos plans her video content by starting with a rough script, estimating word count, and including a hook and foreshadowing.
21:46 📹 Jenny focuses on creating content that speaks to her younger self and her younger audience, like her 10-year-old nieces.
29:38 📊 Jenny discusses how content performs differently on platforms like TikTok, CZcams Shorts, and Instagram Reels, and how audience preferences play a role.
32:12 📈 Jenny is transitioning towards creating long-form content because she sees it as a new challenge and an opportunity for personal growth.
36:27 🔄 Jenny believes that sharability may play a significant role in content performance, though she hasn't conducted a detailed analysis yet.
37:09 ⏱ Jenny has observed that retention doesn't always correlate with the success of a video, citing examples where high-retention videos didn't achieve expected views.

Great video. She definitely knows business. I am also doing shorts and reels, and I feel like CZcams Shorts are future because people have short span of attention now, and it's really popular with Gen Z. That's why I am trying to make content for both platforms, but I generally put my focus on short and expressive videos (and then I use a little bit of Famester as it makes it a lot easier to get into loop). Hearing about how you found success first on TikTok and then changed your strategy for CZcams really showed me to adjust and try new things when creating content.

  • @JonDecker
    @JonDecker Před 7 měsíci +4

Her answers follow her shorts plan. It's great for teaching people. I wish I had that habit today. I have learned a lot from this video.
    Here's what I mean -
She answers every question with the same pattern as her shorts. Here's what I gleaned so far.
Step one: Foreshadowing - Direct answer in her own words.
Step two: Transition - "Let me explain what I mean by that"
Step Three: explain the idea simply
Step Four: Full explanation - review the simple explanation with more details.
Step five: Review - complete the foreshadowing by adding in the full details to show how the foreshadowing was a complete concise answer.
This is a fantastic interview strategy and helps me understand her.
It is great to see how completely she can teach the process in every answer and how closely her answers follow the five step coaching method used by adult education to promote learner retention of a topic.
As GenX I have a lot to learn from GenZ about explaining topics as directly, completely, and concisely to anyone regardless of their background, worldview, or education.
    Bravo 👏.
    Thanks for publishing this interview.
