For me losing the final was not an issue or unexpected, it was the performances in the previous games, unbalanced, outplayed in general, keeping players on the pitch who are doing nothing, general lack of substitutes, players playing out of position, slow play, lack of shots, and this has been an issue before they even kicked a ball in this tournament.
Agreed. No shame in losing to this Spanish side. But as football fans, we can see that a team is playing well or not. Sometimes you play well most of a match and lose anyway.
England was just so rarely playing well for the entire tournament against all opposition. All over the pitch we see players underperforming. I do not fault the individuals, it is on the manager -- a manager who picks favorite players regardless of whether those favorites know how to play well in his system.
@@ComradeOgilvy1984 Spot on! You create a formation imo to suit the players you have. Not the other way round. This is not club football where you can buy and sell to improve. International football is all about playing the best with the hand your dealt.
Even in spite of Southgate's mismanagement, England was given a 4 in 10 chance. I think that turned out to be accurate.
you mean the same thig, he did the last two tournaments??? what did ppl think was going to change
Southgate already said the team missed Kalvin Phillips. Give him another 4 yrs :D
Stop already I can't.

I have to say , I really enjoy hearing foreign people talk about the England team , its respectful , but its so true and so refreshing.
English pundits say the same thing , and it feels like they can't go in depth into what's wrong.
So I'm watching this and enjoying hearing a more balanced but true summing up of what went on.
Hit the nail on the head, Southgate thought teams would park the bus against them, England actually had to park the bus against all teams they played lol
Southgate is a bad manager who got lucky, three easy pathways to two finals and a WC semi, all of which he blew. It’s time for him to go.
Serious question: why is Kane the captain ? I’ve never seen him be a leader, on or off the pitch…
Is Morata a leader ?
The players see him as a leader and he's as our best player all around the world and massively respected but Jude was playing in his position and Kane isn't a 9 and was injured and captains aren't like they were before 😂
@@yemi3266 he was pretty vocal with his team against us.
@@dondamon4669 what world are you living in? 😂
@@yemi3266 I never said Morata was a leader. Your hostility proves my point is valid
Southgate OUT. He was out of ideas when he started and has made no progress since.
Hi John, I've only watched since the 90s but I've never seen an england manager the fans were happy with. They've never won, never made a final, never pressed or really played well as a team. Had better players at times and I've only ever seen us make it to a semi of the euros before southgate. Why do you think england fans expect too much and therefore scapegoat the manager?
@@hyywe240 England "fans" were unhappy with managers long before the 1990's believe me ! It's a pity John can't put his obvious skills in football management into practise at the International level. (Is losing by a single late goal in the final to demonstrably the best team in the tournament so shameful an outcome ? )
@@hyywe240often times I’d agree with you that managers get scapegoated. But with England in this tournament it’s been glaringly obvious in every single game that Southgate has been making the wrong decisions in the pre game and in game decisions
@@Vilutuskyet they made it to the final.
England performances were awful in Euro 2024. How they got to the final was surprising. No attacking flair and conceding goals. It was a joke that some people said England will beat Spain in the finals. Spain had beaten Germany in Germany and a strong France. Southgate cannot adjust. He just knows one style. Reactive than active.
How did they reach the final then ? Didn't concede more than a single goal until the final , scored more than their opposition when it really mattered . Lost by the same margin as Germany . I've not seen any other reference anywhere to a "strong" France. Such a shame you're unavailable for the manager's job .
@@Simpleburger1968 I think that’s why people are so disappointed tbh cos despite everything we saw good/bad. If this England team was acc set up to play well, they very likely would’ve won it.
@@T11CVVDream on! There was zero chance of England beating Spain. English players are incapable of beating the press, they lack the technical ability. It was done and dusted as soon as Spain executed their pressing game. During the whole tournament the only time England was any good in possession was when the Dutch decided not to press England. I rest my case.
Bellingham was trash for most of the 7 matches he played, but if you listened to commentary he was the player of the tournament.
Because he’s a ‘leader’ 💀🤣
What did foden do?
He was the problem all tournament! A 10 that doesn't assist and kane should of been in that position feeding Watkins
@@dondamon4669when you got an old man who can’t get in the box idk what you expect. Still had more chances created and assist than foden
Palmer contributed, more in one 20min appearance than Bellingham, Foden and Rice managed in the whole tournament.
Gab is right. Southgate thought teams were going to sit back on England. Instead everyone pressed. And he had no solution to that.
Most of the England squad would get in every other squad in the Euros. Yet we were outplayed in 13 of the 14 halves of the tournament. Recently we have also lost 4-1 at home to Hungary and 1-0 to ICELAND. The players are there they need a better system.
Kane has been next to useless in major tournaments. A possible injury is just a handy excuse to have. He was a passenger during most matches.
As Ronaldo was with Portugal ?
Gareth is a very decent guy, but his problem is that his thinking is not to lose, but if you want to win you only think about winning.
I just assumed Southgate was leaving after this tournament anyway he has been there for 4 major tournaments that is pretty much unheard of.
Quite simply he doesn't have an elite mind set nor has he got any credibility when it comes to winning anything, he was the same as a player and same as a manager (highlight was getting Middlesbrough relegated), and people forget that he got the England job by default being the u21 coach due to Big sams cockup in the short time he was manager. In short England need Klopp or someone of that ilk!
Three quick corrections that wont suit your agenda but youll have to stomach the facts somehow.
His biggest achievement as a manager is by far the england job. Seen one semi final in the 50 years before him. Outperformed the golden generation of 04 with ahsley young and maguire in defemce and a midfield trio of henderson alli and lingard and got to a world cup semi. A bit more of an achievement than retiring as a player and managing that club the very next season and keeping a poor Middlesbrough in the prem for three years.
He was offered the job by the FA before big spam and turned it down. Then took over and as i mentioned, world cup semi final.
Klopp or "someone of that ilk" will never manage england. These are elite managers in their prime. You have set your sights way too high considering its a part time job, he isnt english, we have literally the worst fans in the world (see the hate on southgate for semi final, final, quarter final, final)
Im not trying to be horrible, just trying to help out.
Anyway, lee carsley will be the next england manager. (He played right back for Everton, won the under 21 euros with england not long ago, never managed a club side)
Or did you think we would hire world class managers and get england pressing and playing expansive attacking football and win every tournament like we used to do before gareth scapegoat?
Correct. He isn't a Winner.
@@hyywe240Graham Potter is clear as day Southgate's successor. The man has literally turned down every single club offer since Chelsea sacked him and also since they still pay him that huge 5 year contract he was on that would automatically cease if he did manage at level so long as that contract still exists.
@@taliamason7986 I would love potter, I really hope so mate
Jude thinks he’s Superman but he’s closer to being Shazam
In the Spain game he was Billy Batson😂
Bro is Hawkeye
I think he ruined the whole balance of the team and just slides around! Kane should of been in that position feeding Watkins and he affected Foden also
Kane, Jude & Rice, even Stones, embarassing lack of leadership and desire from them all.
Bellingham IS superman when he’s coached properly.
Under Southgate he’s an over relied on lost soul
Great analysis from these two. Southgate is miles away from elite coach status. No Premier league club would touch him with a barge pole, if they become manager less
Everytime Kane was subbed off in this tournament England became an effective attacking unit.
He had lead boots all tournament and his so called hold up play was non existent as well.
I’d there anyone on the internet who has agreed with Southgate’s tactical skills and believes he knows what he is doing !? And the English FA want him to stay. Crazy crazy crazy FA. He has the most gifted squad in world football. Southgate has evidently been so poor tactically and his team selection is almost as bad. The England team has been wasted with Southgate at the helm.
Anyone who watched football enough through knows that what he did for england hasn't been done in the past. Two consecutive Euro finals and a World Cup semi-final..he didn't do this because this England generation is so much better, they definitely aren't, sure it could be because football deteriorated and there isn't as strong competition as there was in the past, but still he did something no other coach in the last 30 years has done for england
The England players were pretty far apart compared to Spain and not very compact either
Why did Spain not win by a greater, more decisive margin then ?
Bellingham ego got too big. When he scored in the first knockout, all this Who else nonsense, which disrespects your teammates, kind of like who else cause Kane, Saka, Foden wont.
its not a surprise tbh ..given that we lost to a jetlagged Brazil B team at Wembley and Iceland and have looked bad for a while now...think France gave Spain their toughest test in semi .England always pick players on reputations & past rather than form ...Mainoo is brilliant but if he played for Ipswich rather than Man Utd he would not be in the squad
Swap managers and England would have beaten Spain.
England with a sensible manager would have got the simplest things right:
1. would have taken at least one fit left back. Southgate took none.
2. Would have taken and have played with a genuine left sided attacking player ie Anthony Gordon, or would have taken Sterling, Rashford, Sancho or Grealish who have done relatively well for England in that position in the past and (especially Sterling and Rashford) chipped in with goals. Southgate never played with a genuine left sided forward
3. Would have chosen one of Bellingham or Foden to start at no.10, substituting one for the other as games progressed
4. Would never have started Kane - who quite frankly wasn’t fit enough to be at the Euros. He was a spectator. England played most of their games when he was on the pitch effectively with just 10 men!
5. Would not have neutralised his own midfield by instructing his keeper to constantly boot the ball long to avoid the Spanish high press. Mainoo spent the evening watching the air sail over his head. Little wonder he had so little time on the ball.
With those simple tweaks to the team set-up England would have played far better throughout the tournament than they did.
I just do not understand how an intelligent man like Southgate could be bamboozled by the making of such simple choices. It’s not “rocket science”, just an application of basic common sense.
Let’s be real. The fact England even got to the final papered over some very obvious cracks.
It wasn't that Spain kept belief after England scored it was that Pickford kept kicking the ball to them
Pickford was embarrassing with his distribution, a hyped up goalie with a complacent attitude.
🤣🤣🤣
If it wasn't for Pickford the score would have been 4 or 5. Let's be real here, he saved their a**es and the 2-1 score doesn't reflect just how much better Spain were especially in the second half
Southgate is a dreadful coach but some of those players were shameful last night. Walker at fault for both goals, Bellingham a total dud and Kane running through treacle for an hour and then we as England fans have to put up with a tsunami of online clowning because these guys don't have the heart to fight for their county, makes me sick.
Players are totally over rated
its just a game though after all and they will all be paid more in a week than 10 of us for a year
If anything I’d say Saka was more at fault for first goal because he allowed Williams too much space to run into but truth is Spain found a clever solution for that goal when Ruiz dropped into a rb position and Carvajal went into a wb position which gave Jude a problem. It was the speed of Carvajal’s pass to Yamal that bamboozled Shaw and left him flat footed.
Walker definitely at fault for 2nd because he didn’t drop off with his cbs . Walker’s worst tournament performance tbh.
As for the clowning from overseas fans, it’s tradition going as long as I’ve followed England. We’ve always been everyone’s tournament villains.
best comment ive ever seen u think exactly like me,i would have sold my soul to play for england.
What's surprised me was just how ragged, how painstaking and how disjointed England were throughout the tournament. Southgate's always been a cautious, safety-first manager, but we have played some decent football in each of Southgate's three previous tournaments; indeed, we've even scored quite a few goals, though often through set pieces rather than through chances created via open play. In this tournament, we created very, very few decent moves in open play, let alone created clear cut chances, and that was especially disappointing.
Juls is 100% spot on in his assessment. Most Englands fan have the same feeling about Gareth, his mistakes were obvious.
The only people praising him were the press. The fans wanted him gone before the tournament, he is far too negative.
The "fans" : why aren't they (successful) managers then ? His "negative" took them to the final - all bar one team failed to reach that point . Lost by a single goal to a very good team who deserved to be there . The "Press" were equally dismissive of the team as the "fans" .......(who or what is Juls ? )
No one was asking him to stay on. It was just the FA who want to extend his contract. Safegate constantly has square pegs in round holes.
England needs more humility. They have good players but unproven when isolated from their club all stars. They get exposed when on the World stage. Face it if the Spain and England swap brackets, England gets grouped! The difference between Spain, Germany, France, and Italian football is they don’t act like they are better than everyone else!
England players don’t act like they’re better than everyone else; they all play alongside foreign players.
Nearly all of them play in the most watched league in the world so clearly no mystery why they would be well known, and the economic structure of the EPL is such that the cost of English talent is over-inflated.
Southgate's managerial credentials, before the FA "Headhunted" him, was relegating Middlesbrough. That's it. He failed in his only management job and the FA thought "That's our guy".
Southgate wasn't qualified for the job, and he proves that every time he manages a game. He's won nothing. The football is terrible. He picks the wrong team, plays them in the wrong positions, and changes things too late.
He must go. I can't watch any more boring, negative, slow, defensive, Gareth-Ball any more. He's won fck all and he'll win fck all.
they should come over on a dinghy no passport and they will be able to play then
The FA missed a few chances of sacking Southgate. After the fiasco at Wembley against Italy and after the sufferable performances in Qatar. But he's still there stifling the abundance of talent the current squad has shown week in week out.
Goodbye Gareth. Good riddance negative mindset.
What exactly was the "fiasco" against Italy at Wembley ? Lost only on penalties to a team that a/ missed two of their own 😮 b/ then failed to qualify for the Qatar World Cup . England lost by a single goal at Qatar to a team that took the Final to penalties (though didn't make the Final....or impress greatly ... at Euro 2024 ) .
@@Simpleburger1968The fiasco of losing to what was very clearly an incredibly mediocre Italy side that was made to look good in those Euro's by a good, competent Manager in Roberto Mancini who had a winning mentality from his time at Inter-Milan and Man City. The fiasco of scoring first against them only to inexplicably defend deep so ridiculously early instead of going for another goal to finish them off. As a result of such stupidity, that Italian team grew with more and more confidence in the match and inevitably equalised. Last but not least the fiasco of using a bunch of kids at the time as the last 3 penalty takers. You know something no competent Manager ever does in a high pressured penalty shoot-out where you need your most experienced players the most at that specific point.
Bellingham was exposed, one of the most overrated players I’ve seen. He’s only considered the best young player in the world cause he’s English and PR
He seems useless to me just running round sliding! He never fed Kane ever and kane should of been playing in that position feeding Watkins

Southgate continued to play sluggish injured/tired Kane, ignoring that England played better when he wasn't on the pitch.
There’s not a coach in the world that says throw in from the sideline back to the keeper, that’s on the players
The problem with england is the players not the Coach. I think if Southgate had come with more senior players they'd have won but he made it a Bellingham tournament. Where's Rashford, Sterling, Grealish, and more. When you have Watkins, take Uruguay for example how they handle Nunez and Suarez.
Southgate chose to not pick them , so it's southgates fault.
He basically used the same players every game , despite them showing him they were struggling.
Ultimately his squad management was dreadful , his squad picks were poor.
He is a dreadful manager with no real knowledge of attacking football , no bottle to make the big decisions
Bellingham's attitude seems to have deteriorated over the last few months. Every tackle is a foul, every touch needs to be a trick, every pass needs to go to him. He's believing the hype and delivering. His immaturity is shining through. A great pity; awesome player.

The England game needs to be reviewed with 3 Strikers, Saka, Toney, Watkins 3 midfielders
Grealish, Palmer, Foden
And a solid back 4,drop Walker he was absent, Williams of Spain had clear run at goal 😎
Spain also played with 10 men with Morata. Don't tell me about his work rate and gloss over him. He lost every ball that was fizzed to him. Kane scored 3 goals, Morata scored 1. This whole narrative that England has superior players is false. The EPL may have better players on average than other leagues but countries like Spain, France etc. constantly produce better players than the English. That is a fact! Just because they don't play in the EPL doesn't mean they aren't relevant.
the old trap of playing all the best players instead of the most effective team. England need a plan and then pick players that suit that plan.
Fab review, personally i would of made the game very very physical, you could see the spaniards would of reacted to that, what would argentina do to spain?? England are weak willed and don't have the desire needed. The first half against Holland, why couldn't they follow up that sharpness....Gareth made them sit back and dwell on the ball, it was embarassing. Jude, Kane, Rice, Trippier, absolutely dreadful. Jude's cockiness was Ronalo-esque, embarassing lack of leadership from GS.
The majority of teams lose, the least you can do is play enjoyable football
No true English football fan was team Gareth…EVER!!!
How is Kane a leader?
He was never even Spurs captain. They chose the positively Churchillian Hugo Lloris over him for years. Nothing about Kane on or off the pitch has ever screamed leader to me.

It was Southgates system that failed
If only kalvin phillips was available, they would have won it twice.

Its nice hearing none partisan opinions and honest analysis. The English pundits seem like they’re always hedging criticism to be pc in some regard. The football was horror he has to go.
Take Jürgen Klopp and you win the WC 2026! Greetings from Germany
For me I think if Southgate were to analyse that final properly and realise that once England got back to level if he had continued with that attacking offense and kept pressing at Spain for that final 10-15 minutes that game and the result could have ended so much differently and England may well have been coming home with the first trophy success in over 50 years but no he goes back into the defensive shell and Spain say meh it's our turn and they win the match.....the f.a need to realise Southgate is not the man to win this nation trophies he's too defensive minded and invites opposition to come at them....well when you do that against a side like Spain you gonna get found out and that's exactly what happened
The FA employs Southgate…is their management successful?
Spain showed English the moon and they keep staring at the finger
Sacking the coach would probably take England to win one day.
But to play consistently (and win more often) England needs to reinvent its foundations.
It's all about the way of playing and the mindset!

Hmm, better teams with better ideas stopped England winning trophies. Before Southgate England weren’t even in the conversation for a trophy.
non sensical comments by gab on conquering
Why are people surprised that England lost. All 4 finals was lost only because of gutless Southgate. He was a defender all his life so his default position is to be safe n deep. In a way not playing at a high level gives you the ability to coach freely. Mourino. Ferguson. Klopp are some good examples.

Time to be realistic these players are just good hardworking players not world class
Mainoo was rubbish… Spain mid ran rings around Rice and Mainoo who could not keep possession. Over rated.
Mainoo had a difficult game because we were overrun in the midfield; but can you please tell us when "rings" were run around him? Because you're talking bullocks. And Rice has been an amazing sweeper/distributor/motivator throughout. Great lads, poor tactics, and a ticking Spanish team who deserved to win overall... but we could have got at them.
Thats right and several players failed Walker. Trippier. Bellingham, Foden, Rice and Kane. Rice in particular was dismal and Kane doesn't have legs. England need a new manager who has a system that can beat FIFA top 10 teams and then examine which players fit. Beating tin can teams is not an objective, it is practice.

He was pretty good at Dortmund
I think the level he displayed with England is due to the rest of the overrated squad. Kane is hyped to no end despite being titleless, that goes for most of the England squad
why are there stories of Southgate out but Deschamps is getting free reign. He has managed since 2012 and has one major trophy and a nations league surely that’s poor with the talent he has at his disposal
Because he's still living off the euro and world cup wins.

Stubborn. All English managers are the same.
Whom is this foreigner ??? Joker... Why dont you go and retire and leave Gareth and the players ALONE..

I find that the criticism of Southgate is very unfair.
This is a country that never made a semifinal outside of England.
In this very program they said they don't have midfield passers.
England don't have great players. They have some good some very good.
They have traditionally bypassed their midfield when under pressure. They can't play through the pressure.
They don't have a Rodri. They have decent forwards and good wingers. He played bellingham in the middle and on the wing. He played foden on the flank and on the wing. He started Mainoo he ran out of gas.
They are just not good enough.
"They have decent forwards and good wingers."
It would be acceptable to play to their strengths. For me, the frustration is the Euro2021 and WC2022 teams knew how to counterattack, yet this team does not. It would be okay to dominate the wide spaces and fling in 20 crosses. It would be okay to play defensive and counterattack. But this team is a defensive/possession team that lacks creativity. What is Southgate's plan?
@@ComradeOgilvy1984 to do that they have to win the ball and when they win the ball they have to play through the pressure. Mainoo seem to be the only midfielder since Paul Ince and Paul Gascoigne. That's why when under pressure the elect to hit the ball long. That has been the English DNA.
The one thing I would knock him for is not carrying Maddisson. But England does not have players comparable to Ruiz and Rodri.
This is a false dichotomy. This is one of the most talented England teams they've had and it's in a period where there's no great teams unlike 30 years ago. Theyve only reached finals because of easy draws. If they played on the other side they'd have been out in the quarters. They lose to Spain, France, Portugal and Germany. Despite facing easier teams they still struggled. Theyve won 1 game vs top 10 in 8 years. Even teams ranked in the 30s have done better against top teams.
@@russellward4624 I was looking back at the last FOUR tournaments, and the only notable victories to Southgate's credit would be a pretty good Colombian side (2018) a peculiarly terrible German side (2021) and a pretty good Netherlands side (2024). Literally every other victory to Southgate's credit is an opponent England should be bullying around the ptich on most days. (I am a Liverpool fan with a soft spot for Shaqiri, but England should trounce any team like Switzerland that has to sub on an MLS player.). Southgate has gotten far in generally soft groups and some amazing luck in the bracket opponents in three of four tournaments. Whenever Southgate meets a very good team, England folds 100%.
There is no shame in losing to Croatia, Italy, France, Spain, but I cannot imagine them ever winning against this caliber of opponent with Gareth at the helm.
I literally think that the recently canned Greg Berkhalter of the USA team could perform as well as Southgate at the head of the English team in these scenarios -- he, too, was well liked on a personal level by players and the national football association.

Brits are sad because they lost the final ( with a goal that was a clear offside) but anyway criticising Southgate is overreacting for a manager that played two back to back finals. European matches are hard because you have 16 teams that can beat each other and the difference between them is made on small details or dubios referee decisions. Spain was helped against Georgia, Germany and England, Germany against Denmark, England against the Netherlands, Netherlands against Romania and Turkey so.... be realistic playing back to back finals is very good in Europe, after Southgate it will take decades for England to reach another final.
Wut 🤭
That goal was NOT offside.
Not offside
Not offside.
Everyone saw the replay
He is a clown who needs to leave and pursue his true passion of being a labour MP.
You've reached the final in two consecutive championships. Why so negative?
Because second doesn't count
Then it must be hard to be british.
3 🦁 must get Carlo Anceloti or Lippi or Klopp or Pep or Jose. Thanks 4 ur honesty Jules & Gabs.
Also, pray for peace as the world is in a fragile way. 3 lions fans are very lovely as they wirry about world peace even after another heart breaker.
I'm amazed of all the Southgate bashing. Sure he was too conservative maybe and played Kane too stubbornly. But England has been only in three major finals in the last 120 years. THREE. And two of those with Gareth Southgate. Now suddenly England is always the #1 favorite before every single tournament after decades of embarrassments. Who remembers when Iceland dropped them from the Euro second round recently... like a bad habit? Even back then the English press said they were favorites. Maybe English fans could use some kind of reality check, huh?
Yes, I partly agree but it also has to do with the luck of getting the easy path. Once there was a real, difficult opponent England lost. Which was the final.
I see where you're coming from, but England do not seem to have a coherent strategy or identifiable playstyle. Barely any structure or balance. Players aside, this is a coaching issue. Even if you think the players aren't good enough, you still expect to see a strategy at this level of international football. The results are misleading, especially when you look at the opponents he has faced.
They got one of the best squads determined by impartial sites that ranks players and they had the top scorer in bundesliga, La Liga player of the year in Jude Bellingham who was third best scorer in La Liga, They had player of the year from Premier League in Foden and top six of the ten top scorers in that league. They played atrocious football including a loss to Iceland before the tournament and as always with Southgate they end up winning nothing.
If the ambition is never to win anything but try and keep friends with media then sure sign him up over the world cup also 🤦♂
Iceland dumped us a few weeks ago as well, so that statement doesn't hold water.
Can you compare the players against Iceland and the current English squad? Southgate took a single LB, who was injured and played a RB in that position for the whole tournament until the final. He didn't start a single game with a proper LW, he played the first two games with a RB in CM. Southgate is an actual joke.
I actually think espn do the best football analysis. Most well rounded and not living up southgates back passage
The England national team did not dare to take risks and played attacking in the first half and tended to defend
