For me losing the final was not an issue or unexpected, it was the performances in the previous games, unbalanced, outplayed in general, keeping players on the pitch who are doing nothing, general lack of substitutes, players playing out of position, slow play, lack of shots, and this has been an issue before they even kicked a ball in this tournament.

    • @ComradeOgilvy1984

Agreed. No shame in losing to this Spanish side. But as football fans, we can see that a team is playing well or not. Sometimes you play well most of a match and lose anyway.
England was just so rarely playing well for the entire tournament against all opposition. All over the pitch we see players underperforming. I do not fault the individuals, it is on the manager -- a manager who picks favorite players regardless of whether those favorites know how to play well in his system.

    • @hyywe240
      @hyywe240 Před měsícem +2

Three quick corrections that wont suit your agenda but youll have to stomach the facts somehow.
His biggest achievement as a manager is by far the england job. Seen one semi final in the 50 years before him. Outperformed the golden generation of 04 with ahsley young and maguire in defemce and a midfield trio of henderson alli and lingard and got to a world cup semi. A bit more of an achievement than retiring as a player and managing that club the very next season and keeping a poor Middlesbrough in the prem for three years.
He was offered the job by the FA before big spam and turned it down. Then took over and as i mentioned, world cup semi final.
Klopp or "someone of that ilk" will never manage england. These are elite managers in their prime. You have set your sights way too high considering its a part time job, he isnt english, we have literally the worst fans in the world (see the hate on southgate for semi final, final, quarter final, final)
Im not trying to be horrible, just trying to help out.
Anyway, lee carsley will be the next england manager. (He played right back for Everton, won the under 21 euros with england not long ago, never managed a club side)
Or did you think we would hire world class managers and get england pressing and playing expansive attacking football and win every tournament like we used to do before gareth scapegoat?

Swap managers and England would have beaten Spain.
England with a sensible manager would have got the simplest things right:
    1. would have taken at least one fit left back. Southgate took none.
    2. Would have taken and have played with a genuine left sided attacking player ie Anthony Gordon, or would have taken Sterling, Rashford, Sancho or Grealish who have done relatively well for England in that position in the past and (especially Sterling and Rashford) chipped in with goals. Southgate never played with a genuine left sided forward
    3. Would have chosen one of Bellingham or Foden to start at no.10, substituting one for the other as games progressed
    4. Would never have started Kane - who quite frankly wasn’t fit enough to be at the Euros. He was a spectator. England played most of their games when he was on the pitch effectively with just 10 men!
    5. Would not have neutralised his own midfield by instructing his keeper to constantly boot the ball long to avoid the Spanish high press. Mainoo spent the evening watching the air sail over his head. Little wonder he had so little time on the ball.
With those simple tweaks to the team set-up England would have played far better throughout the tournament than they did.
I just do not understand how an intelligent man like Southgate could be bamboozled by the making of such simple choices. It’s not “rocket science”, just an application of basic common sense.

It was the speed of Carvajal’s pass to Yamal that bamboozled Shaw and left him flat footed.

This whole narrative that England has superior players is false. The EPL may have better players on average than other leagues but countries like Spain, France etc. constantly produce better players than the English. That is a fact! Just because they don't play in the EPL doesn't mean they aren't relevant.

Jude's cockiness was Ronalo-esque, embarassing lack of leadership from GS.

I find that the criticism of Southgate is very unfair.
This is a country that never made a semifinal outside of England.
In this very program they said they don't have midfield passers.
England don't have great players. They have some good some very good.
They have traditionally bypassed their midfield when under pressure. They can't play through the pressure.
They don't have a Rodri. They have decent forwards and good wingers. He played bellingham in the middle and on the wing. He played foden on the flank and on the wing. He started Mainoo he ran out of gas.
They are just not good enough.

"They have decent forwards and good wingers."
It would be acceptable to play to their strengths. For me, the frustration is the Euro2021 and WC2022 teams knew how to counterattack, yet this team does not. It would be okay to dominate the wide spaces and fling in 20 crosses. It would be okay to play defensive and counterattack. But this team is a defensive/possession team that lacks creativity. What is Southgate's plan?

@@ComradeOgilvy1984 to do that they have to win the ball and when they win the ball they have to play through the pressure. Mainoo seem to be the only midfielder since Paul Ince and Paul Gascoigne. That's why when under pressure the elect to hit the ball long. That has been the English DNA.
The one thing I would knock him for is not carrying Maddisson. But England does not have players comparable to Ruiz and Rodri.

This is a false dichotomy. This is one of the most talented England teams they've had and it's in a period where there's no great teams unlike 30 years ago. Theyve only reached finals because of easy draws. If they played on the other side they'd have been out in the quarters. They lose to Spain, France, Portugal and Germany. Despite facing easier teams they still struggled. Theyve won 1 game vs top 10 in 8 years. Even teams ranked in the 30s have done better against top teams.

    • @ComradeOgilvy1984
      @ComradeOgilvy1984 Před měsícem +1

@@russellward4624 I was looking back at the last FOUR tournaments, and the only notable victories to Southgate's credit would be a pretty good Colombian side (2018) a peculiarly terrible German side (2021) and a pretty good Netherlands side (2024). Literally every other victory to Southgate's credit is an opponent England should be bullying around the ptich on most days. (I am a Liverpool fan with a soft spot for Shaqiri, but England should trounce any team like Switzerland that has to sub on an MLS player.). Southgate has gotten far in generally soft groups and some amazing luck in the bracket opponents in three of four tournaments. Whenever Southgate meets a very good team, England folds 100%.
There is no shame in losing to Croatia, Italy, France, Spain, but I cannot imagine them ever winning against this caliber of opponent with Gareth at the helm.
I literally think that the recently canned Greg Berkhalter of the USA team could perform as well as Southgate at the head of the English team in these scenarios -- he, too, was well liked on a personal level by players and the national football association.
