    I think MMA is too popular of a sport now to not have a more objective scoring system. Sandhagen vs TJ really made me confused as what judges actually prioritize in a fight.

    • @samcooke343
      @samcooke343 Před 2 lety +4

      I don't even think we need a traditional scoring system, we just need a large collective (say 15) of experienced judges (like ex fighters or coaches, etc.) that gives a binary win or lose opinion on a whole fight, so you get a large sample size when awarding decisions. Even scoring individual rounds seems a little pointless to me as it introduces coasting or trying to game the system. As soon as you introduce points or scoring for subjective criteria like effective striking or grappling, you're trying to fit a crazy and chaotic sport where almost anything can happen into neat little boxes.

    One difference with boxing corners Vs MMA corners seems to be the boxing corners seem to think beyond the current fight. For example, a fighter is in a bad spot and risking long term injury/K.O etc and the corner seems to be willing to call it to save the fighter for 'another day' to prolong the fighter's career/quality of life. This may be because boxers have more options in securing a future fight compared to the '3 losses and you're done' nature of top flight MMA.

    • @jgreen802
      @jgreen802 Před 2 lety +1

    Boxers take way more head shots which is all the really matters long term and the fights are much longer and it's such a specific skill that once a guy gets the upper hand its almost impossible to turn it around. MMA less rounds, much less head shots per minute, chance of turning the fight around much higher and more competitive match making.

    • @joeshmow2356
      @joeshmow2356 Před 2 lety +2

      I agree with you 100% but the one thing I really worry about with MMA is ground and pound or follow up head shots after a knockdown where there is nowhere for the force of the blow to dissipate whatsoever. It only takes a few shots to a grounded opponent with their head bouncing off of the canvas to cause immense damage. Obviously the same situation can occur in boxing with guys getting caught in the ropes and unable to fall but I think that ground and pound strikes can be uniquely damaging and are definitely a cause for concern.

      @@alexthelion422 it sort of makes me think on how you said the brain has already shut down like is it similar to a drunk driver being more relaxed when they crash and have less injuries or would the fighter be more prone because some get really stiff and that may make the brain tense up as well, interesting to think about. I will say this tho, I really hate it when a fighter is obviously knocked out cold and fighters still go for unnecessary blows and say the ref hasn't called the fight. 2 names that come to mind are Jeremy Stephens and Ngannou, great fighters but still don't respect they do that

  • @Ritalie
    @Ritalie Před 2 lety +3

    I've been a fan of MMA since 2006. And there is a major problem with late stoppages in MMA fights. This is a problem that will lead to a death in the UFC soon if it's not addressed. It makes no sense why the UFC hasn't addressed this problem, because the negative dark cloud of having a death, will be a black mark on the sport. Calvin Kattar, and Bryan Ortega both took life threatening damage in their fights. Conor's teammate, Charlie Ward, killed a man in a regular MMA fight, after landing multiple head strikes. It's not uncommon for boxers to die, as you can look up the record of boxing deaths, and it's quite astounding. There are a few major problems. Late stoppages, where referees allow a person to take unnecessary damage, as well as fighters hitting their unconscious opponent with hammer fists (Francis Ngannou, Jeremy Stephens). And then, fighters clearly in "survival" and not mounting any offense at all.
