This is an incredible video and literally the most basic straightforward one I’ve seen on this topic. My husband and I poured a slab to build our dream home almost 3 years ago. Covid shut us down and we just started back up. Just so others have an idea our slab sat in the elements for almost 3 years! Now that we’ve started back to building I’ve gotten two bids for companies to stain and/or seal that were $14k and $16k. We were beside ourselves! I knew there had to be a way to do it ourselves but didn’t know where to begin. I watched video after video but it still looked so complex and involved either acid washing or grinding our slab before we could stain/seal. The main level is over 2000 sq ft so I knew that wasn’t practical given I’d be doing most of the work myself with my husbands busy work schedule but every professional video made me think this was the only right way to do it. I accepted that and reached out to my local Sunbelt Rentals who happened to have a flooring specialty store nearby. They told me the only “right way” to do it was to rent the grinder and it involved a 7 step process with various grits of pads. They even offered the products used to stain and seal. So here was the kicker…the grinder was $900 per day or $4500 for the week bringing our total to $7k. Stain and sealant was less than $900. The other $8k was equipment and grinding pads. I was beside myself! I knew there had to be a better way. It is true what is being said in this video regarding the water test! Thankfully we passed the test and water absorbs quickly in our slab. This video just saved me almost $6k so thank you so very much! We may try the sprayer route given I plan to seal as soon as my electrician and plumber finish their second phase but before sheet rock goes up. We currently just have framing and the roof on. It probably would be a challenge with Sheetrock finished but I plan to rent a floor scrubber for about $300. It cleans/scrubs and sucks up water along the way. We will have to thoroughly shop vac and scrub some areas no doubt before we use the scrubber though so it sounds like the cleaning phase will be the most crucial. Thank you so much for making this video, your method and this product seem like a dream!
Thank you for the comment! Glad the video was able to help you! Good luck on your build!! Thanks for watching!
Looks amazing. It’s exactly the look i wanted. The cracks just add character.
Oh my gosh thank you for this video! This is exactly what we want to do in our new house and it’s been so difficult to figure out what process we need to do.
We have a 16 years old carpet and we need a more pet/children friendly floor. We can't wait to do it. You helped us a lot. Love your floor!
You are absolutely AMAZING!! I have been going back and forth in my mind about how to do my concrete floors… like the acid stain look but we are living in the house… and don’t want to deal with toxicity… don’t like water based stain look…. Using sealant alone is PERFECT for the look I want!! Thank you so much for posting this!! I now know what direction to go!! Love your house!!
Glad it helped! Thanks for watching!
This is the video I've been looking for. You are awesome and thank you for making this. Helps a bunch. Hope you and your family are doing well. God bless and love the sign above the stove. Keep Him the center.
Thanks for watching! God bless!
Thank you. Four years ago I bought a house with beautiful stained polished concrete floors. They have a dull shine and are definitely porous so I'm always making sure no one spills anything acid based on it like juice, etc. I'm looking for something that will give a long shine, is durable and lets spills bead up. There were a few etched marks by my frig where ice cubes had fallen. Right now I'm using a cheap floor shine stuff but it does NOT seal. I'm sharing incase anyone else is considering concrete floors. They are not low maintenance but better than carpet.
The floor looks solid. Man I had no idea you can get those results with a sealer. Thanks for sharing.
Appreciate you watching!
Real nice video - answered a lot of questions especially about etching. Great job!
Looks great. I think we’re going to do it in our barn. Thank you!
Thanks for the overview!
Love the floors, the genius minimalistic looks of your home and most of all, that sign in the background above the cooking range! Blessings brother !
Appreciate you watching
Great video and explaining in details.. I’m not a GIY girl at all and I want to do this with my house
Thank you for the great info. We decided to seal are floor and followed your advice on product and application. It exceeded our expectations and glad we found your channel.
Glad y’all are satisfied with the finished product! Thanks for watching!
Great video. Using this for my basement ASAP
Great video. Thanks brother! God bless!
Thank you!! Basic instructions and good information! I’m gonna do it!
Good video Bobby👍
This was so helpful - thank you! Was just wondering whether I can do this myself and you've given me the confidence.
You got this! 💪
Awesome video, well explained
Good informative video!
This is great. Love the color and the fact that you did not stain it. We were thinking of having the stain added when the concrete is poured but never thought about just finishing without stain. We will definitely be considering this option for next year when we finally get to building our home! Thanks for sharing.
It’s definitely unique. We love it and it was super easy. Thanks for watching! Good luck on your build!
@@LifeOnTheRidge Thanks :-)
I would say that it is cooler too!
Outstanding advice!
You did a great job...looks perfect. I'm in the process of grinding my basement floor clean and will put a clear gloss sealer on it. I'm just trying to find the best product and whether it should be water or oil-based. Good stuff!
Thanks for the video, good info.
God Bless your family!
Thank you! May God bless you as well!
Great vid,very helpful. Cheers 👍
Appreciate it!
Looks great - I'm about to do this with my power trowelled concrete floors
how did it turn out with the power trowelled floor?
OMG. I love his accent!! and that matters easy to listen to. But. I have been looking for a solution to my Caribbean house in Belize. it's not a large space but couldn't figure out how to finish it. THIS IS IT. THANK YOU. I WILL DO MY DO DILIGENCE AND GO FOR IT.
😂 lol thanks. Hope it turns out good for you! Thanks for watching!
What do you use to clean your floors on a regular basis?
Do you know if you can touch up any high traffic areas without resealing the entire floor?
Thanks!!
GREAT info!
Thanks for watching!
Thanks!
Thanks
Can you put this on top of painted concrete floors
will you ever do an update video on this floor sealing?
I sealed it on Saturday and love the look. Does it scratch easily? I mean with dining room chairs, refrigerator, or moving washer and dryer in?
Awesome!! I would say it’s very tolerant to scratching. we do have some scratches and scuffs from sliding chairs across the floor but you’ve got to be looking at the floors from the right angle to really see it.
Hey! Great video! Quick question, those sf coverage, was that per gallon or per 5 gallons? I assume its per 5 gallons but wanted to be sure. Thanks a bunch! Those floors look great!
It would be per gallon
I also see that there is a grip additive that can be used to help from being slippery. We have 3 little ones with a 4th on the way. I saw your little one in the photos. Is it slippery enough that you are concerned about it? Or do you think the additive is not necessary?
It is fairly slippery with socks on. Our little guy mostly runs barefoot in the house but we try to discourage running in the house haha. Every now and then he has a spill but we try to keep the real rambunctious playing to the bedrooms where the carpet is.
Thanks for the video! Can you please tell me if you had any trouble touching the walls or if you used a different roller closer to the wall?
I can’t remember but we may have used a brush in tight spots. But we mostly used a roller and got as close as possible.
This was SO helpful! We're thinking about doing this in our house. We have a slab foundation. Do you by chance know if we can just use that slab foundation as the actual surface we seal, or are we going to have to pour another layer of concrete on top of the original builder's foundation? Thanks so much for this video!!! So informative!
Yes, seal the actually slab foundation...as long as it it finished. As in the floor is smooth. We sealed the actual slab and had no issues. Hope it turns out good for y’all. Thanks for watching
@@LifeOnTheRidge thank you so much!!!
Great video, just built a barndominium ourselves, one question, what kind of degreaser did you use for stains. Thanks
I believe it was “mean green” and “awesome”
How has your floor held up? We're wanting to do this in our house. Great job by the way!
The seal has held up GREAT!!
I plan on using it & then applying the matte polish, have you thought about upkeep with the polish?
I haven't but I need to look into that
Did you have any relief cuts in your slab? If so did you fill them with any self leveling filler or anything? We have them and I don’t want the to fill with food and stuff.
we do on the porches but not in the house.
We are doing this to our barn home this weekend. Do you have any other pointers or advice?
just make sure the floors are as clean as possible and don't put the sealer on too thick. You can always put more coats on if you feel like its too thin but putting it on too thick will change the look. Also, start in an area of your house that people won't notice mess-ups as easily. You'll get the hang of it pretty quick!! Thanks for watching!!
Love the finish y’all did. Not too shiny. Your kitchen looks great. So did you apply before baseboard trim?
Thanks so much! Yes, applied before trim.
One room looks lighter than the other one, did you use the clear sealer in both rooms or was one of them the tinted version?
Same sealer on both floors. Both are the same color. Must have been the lighting or the camera
The cracks in the floor, were they before or after treating the concrete? And also, is there reason for concern when it happens on behalf of the integrity of the floors?
I can’t remember if the cracks were there or not. But no, I’m not worried about integrity of the floors. There’s one guarantee about concrete....it’s going to crack.
Hey there, do you happen to know if your concrete has fibers?
I'm told that most concrete slabs in houses are fiber reinforced concrete. but my concern is that if I do this, when we seal, it may make it feel really rough with the fiber. Supposedly, the fibers look like little hairs once it’s finished. The sealer may harden them and make it rough feeling. I wouldn’t want to have to sand it after. Just wanted to know if your concrete had fibers?
Yes our concrete is fiber mesh. But when they finished the concrete it made it smooth. No fiber sticking up. I’ve read about what your talking about but we’ve had no issues with ours.
is sealing the concrete the same as finishing it? I'm moving into an apartment with unfinished concrete floors and thought that I could just seal them like you show in this video, but is there necessary steps in between other than cleaning?
I’m not 100% sure but most concrete is “finished” a certain way. Smooth finish.
Broom finish (which will be rough texture)
I would think in a dwelling it’s probably smooth finished that hasn’t been sealed. If that is the case you should be able to follow the steps that I laid out and be fine. But I always recommend doing extra research as well. Thank you for watching!
Can you do a video outlining how you did you AC ductwork? I seen in video near the end the one single long duct and was curious how it was done
It’s just an exposed duct that goes out directly from the indoor air handler in the attic space. That was one of the few things I contracted out.
Wondering if you filled your stress joint cuts before you sealed or even at all? Just trying to decide if it’s something I should do. Your floors are beautiful! Great job!
During the 4years I’ve had some cracks develop and just recently sealed them.
Thanks for watching!
After the sealer is applied is the floor slippery when wet?
These are smooth finish floors so they will be a little slippery when wet
Was a cure and seal applied shortly after the pour?
I don’t believe so
How long do you suggest that the cement cure before sealing?
Did you drywall any walls? I’m trying to avoid cleaning drywall off the cement.
I would think as soon as the concrete finishes setting up it would be ok but I'm not sure. Our concrete was a few months old when we did ours. We don't have any drywall in our house. I don't blame you there, that would make the cleaning process just that much more tedious. Hope this helps! Thanks for watching!
Concrete needs at LEAST 30 days before any sealer is applied.
Did you etch the concrete before applying the sealer?
No...the concrete was still porous enough to accept the seal
How are they holding up after a year? I’m getting ready to do my floors in central Mississippi. You are more than welcome to come help if you want to lol great video
Lol. I appreciate the invite but I’m gonna have to pass. Haha.
Been 2 years since we built and they still holding up good. Honestly, it could probably stand another coat but I’ll save that for another time
How has the Eagle sealer held up over the two years since this video? Any pros/cons? Because of your video I think we are going to go this route with our ICF barndo build. Thanks!
It definitely shows some wear but I would say it has held up well. I plan on resealing soon
@LifeOnTheRidge do you just reseal over the top with the same product?
Do you think this stuff would be a good option for a concrete shower floor?
I’m trying minimize mold build up in my basement bathroom shower.
Im not sure. Might be worth calling the manufacturer to see
Thanks man
i have a 2000 sqft basement do you think 5 gallons would be enough to cover it
it should be but I would check the manufacture recommendations
Is it ok if the floor is painted first, then put a sealer? I ask because the floor was half painted by previous owners.
I want to seal the floor.
I’m not sure. I would recommend checking with the manufacturer
How long does it take to cure, before yiu can put furniture and heavy items on it?
I think it’s 24-48hrs but I can’t remember for sure
How slippery is it? Did you have to add anti slip to it? Good video.
I didn't add anything to it. and its only slippery when wet!
What do you all clean the floors with on the daily basis?
Just vacuum and mop and swiffer mop pads
Is this product for interior use? Should we concern about the air quality? Because I saw most cases for exterior concrete usage...Tks
You can use this interior as well. Your area should be well ventilated during install tho
If you use Acrylic based sealer in an inside area, be sure the area is VERY well ventilated as the fumes are overwhelming !!!
Did you use rebar in the floor
No rebar. Our concrete has fiber mesh in it
When you were getting ready to apply the second coat, did you wait the 4 hours (for foot traffic) or just 2 hours?
I can’t remember how long we wait but I think we waited till it was dry enough to walk on
My buddies over at Clemmons Concrete Coatings........
The product page on Eagle website says to clean with water only. Do you use any cleaners on your floors that you sealed? Or just water?
We cleaned the floors with some regular floor cleaner (fabulooso maybe?) and spot cleaned really dirty places with some dawn or degreaser. But we made sure to mop with water after the Initial clean to get all the residue up.
@@LifeOnTheRidge thank you for your reply! Do y’all still use the fabuloso to clean now?
Yes
Did you only apply 2 coats?
Yes
does this go under or over paint?
I would think it would go over, but it’s always a good idea to check with the manufacturer.
👍
Can i paint floor black then do this? And wt aboout flaky or glitter?
I'm sure that is an option but do your research before hand...When in doubt you could always call the manufacturer. They answered all the questions I had. Thanks for watching!
@@LifeOnTheRidge thank you sir
after two years how did it hold up?
About 3.5 years later, i can definitely tell it has worn. I’m hoping to reseal this year.
Did you stain your concrete at all before sealing?
Nope! That’s the natural color
did you guys sand the concrete before applying the coat? also this is just the sealer coat alone right? you didn't add any epoxy? I bought a one story house need new floorings old flooring is in terrible condition I just want the cheapest way possible for most durable floors.
We didn’t do any floor prep except for cleaning really really good. Correct, this is just a seal. If you have flooring that is held down with glue it’ll be more work but I’m sure not impossible. The key is in the prep. Floors need to be clean as possible
@@LifeOnTheRidge after sealing the concrete can you add epoxy over it if you decide you want to add it later or do you have to remove the original seal and then add epoxy and then seal it
That I'm not too sure about
@@LifeOnTheRidge how many gallons would I need to cover 2000sft? Like maybe 10 gallon? If I layer it 3 times would it last longer or is that to much and maybe 2 layers is good enough?
My contractor stated the he applies a cure and seal to slow down curing and after 28 days I can do what I want.
Yeah always a good idea to check with your contractor to see if they applied anything to the floors
I thought you are supposedly to periodically wax concrete floors which protects the sealer. That way you should never have to seal again. Do you ever wax yours?
I have never waxed the floors. Might be something I need to check in to though. Thanks for watching!
How has it held up in the past 3 years?
It’s held up good. It could use a
re-coating after 4 years tho
So after 8 months I wonder how it holds up.
over 1 year later and still holding up strong
What color stain did younuse they look great
No stain. Just left the concrete the natural color and sealed it
Maybe I should listen to the entire video instead of skipping. Sorry about that hell of a job well done.
Lol 😂 no worries! Appreciate it
How is it holding up? I’m thinking about using it for my mechanic shop
so far so good. you can see some wear in high traffic areas but overall I am very pleased
@@LifeOnTheRidge Just curious can I clean the floor with powder tide and water like mopping up
I’m not sure. You could check with the manufacturer to make sure
@@LifeOnTheRidge ok thanks also I just did my Eagle Supreme Sealer today and was just wondering how long until the smell goes away?
The smell doesn’t stay around long as long as you keep the area well ventilated for a few days
Following
@6:00 how did you get your concrete to that dark/black color?
That’s just the natural color of the concrete
@@LifeOnTheRidge can you spray this on or roll only?
is it slippy?
only when wet
why didn't you seal the concrete under the carpet? Wouldn't that protect the concrete from future stains or pet accidents?
True about spills creating stains under the carpet, but it’s under the carpet so we’re not really worried about it. And we don’t allow animals inside.
Gloss or satin?
Gloss
Yes but is it slippery?
Slippery when wet
@@LifeOnTheRidge I know I'm saying when its dry..i did a concrete floor and guy complain it was to slippery?
lol.....It's not really slippery but its a slick floor if that makes sense....Like any smooth finish concrete would be. If you put the breaks on too fast with sock feet you will slide haha
Just wondering if the seal makes your floor slippery at all? Thank you for explaining how you sealed your floors, they look beautiful.
They are just smooth finished concrete floors but aren’t that slippery...unless wet of course.
