- THE REAL DOWNTON ABBEY (& We return to one of our favourite places)// Happy Wednesday, A bit unusual to publish a video today but because we only returned from our work trip on Monday night, I needed 2 days to edit the video but here you go!
If you ever wondered about the real Downton Abbey, you might be pleased to hear that it exists in Yorkshire where the popular period drama is set. Highclere Castle in the South of England was used for the TV series but it's actually Newby Hall that shows incredible similarities to Downton Abbey. Not only is Newby Hall set in Yorkshire with Ripon, Thirsk, York or Skipton nearby. All of these locations are mentioned in Downton Abbey. There was even a Lord Grantham in the 1800s at Newby Hall who had a daughter called Lady Mary. Fascinating!
After a stop in Yorkshire, we headed further North to Northumberland. Some of you might remember when we visited Cragside, one of our favourite National Trust properties, last year. This time we wanted to return for the rhododendron bloom. Cragside is a beautiful Victorian country house and was the home of Lord and Lady Armstrong. In fact Cragside was the first house worldwide to be lit by hydroelectricity. Lord Armstrong had millions of trees planted in Cragside with stunning lakes so that the landscape very much reminds of parts in Germany. We hope you enjoy the video. Kirsten & Joerg

I don't know what it was about this video that has me feeling so emotional. There's no way I can express the depth of my gratitude to you two for showing me all these places I will likely never see in person. I can't even describe my emotions! Joerg's drone footage + that beautiful music gave me goosebumps. Anyway, thank you from the bottom of my heart for capturing such beauty.
There’s been a terrible mistake, I should be living in England! I love when you take us to these beautiful homes and gardens. This video is the final straw, I’m making my husband take me to Newport Rhode Island to The Breakers this weekend it will have to do!

It is so peaceful watching your videos with the lovely scenery, the birds singing and the soft music. It always remind me of Pride & Prejudice and Emma I don't know why but it does. Thank you for making these beautiful films. And love your dress.

Thank you for taking us n this trip to Newby Hall in Yorkshire. You both find such lovely places to visit. My husband and I would not get to go in person. Would have loved this so much. I agree it must be Downton Abbey and the use of the names of persons and other places mentioned around it looks as though this is exactly what was really the case.

It was great for 3 nights but it was just part of a bigger cottage, it was a tiny tiny space, probably looked bigger on camera.

I cannot wrap my mind around how some people were so fortunate to have lived in such places! The beautiful home and grounds are mind boggling in their beauty. Seeing the rhodies in their showy best would be breath taking, it would take hours to take it all in. I hope you make a return trip on your way to or from Switzerland. Many happy trails to you!
