You’ve been there in a way I’m sure he now appreciates in hindsight. When someone has internal stuff happening, they could just be keeping you around to feel nurtured and ‘not alone’ or to deflect their issues on. It 10/10 isn’t you, it’s actually them. I broke up with my ex about 2 years ago coz I always felt put down by him. Been single ever since and haven’t really wanted to date as there’s many things I need to heal from. Dating is not easy anyways. I feel like people start to show interest but can pull away and ghost out just as quickly. Happened to me after I fell for someone who I thought was the one. Not even an explanation. People don’t even have enough decency to give closure. Still hope to find the right one but there’s so much work I need to do on myself first. Sounds like the guy had emotional or mental issues that he was going through. It probably has nothing to do with you and everything to do with his health mental , physical, emotional.
Here’s my thought about this: most people do not know that alcoholics will not change for anything, because of the brain fog and everything else, you can’t physically change anyone into who you want them to be. They have to do it themselves.
You are SUCH a good man. My God. You have so much self-understanding which gives you great insights into other people. I also love how you take responsibility for your part in things and know what to take responsibility for. This is a great video.

Tony, you gotta have a strategy for dating. Some basic rules and principles you must follow. Treat dating like you are recruiting someone. Be mentally strong and willing to walk away whenever someone disrespects you, your time, or your boundaries.
1. Don't take their word for it. Look at the pattern.
2. You don't owe your loyalty to someone unless someone commits to you.
3. Your time is too precious. Don't waste it on just hope.
4. Don't just date one person unless you are in a committed relationship with them. Always keep your options open. Weed out people who don't match your requirements.
5. If they want you in their life they will make time for you.

I am sorry to hear this Tony. This individual was not meant for you and you deserve better. I understand the "boredom" you had during that time but I also know that it's toxic on yourself to "waste" time with another person. The time you could be spending on yourself and healing yourself. I had to go through the same cycle to get better. The most important part is to learn from your mistakes and do better next time and love yourself a little more.

Those issues, paired with the general generational differences that make complete connection difficult, tend to ruin relationships before they begin.
