- This simple wooden box looks really expensive and can be the perfect woodworking gift. It takes very little material, but makes the most of it with incredible contrasting woods that will impress anyone who is lucky enough to receive it.
I made this little wood box when I was thinking of fast ways to make gift projects. Woodworkers are always looking for things to make for other people. What I like about this project is that it’s a simple build, not a lot of pieces, but it still looks amazing.
I made the box approximately 4” long x 3” wide and 3” tall. It’s made from wenge and maple. Wenge can be a bit pricey, but this project requires only a tiny amount and another dark wood can be substituted.

I love simple projects like this. I've always had a box obsession since I was little. It's actually in making my wedding card box years ago that got me into woodworking. Now I do it full time from home and love it. Never underestimate the power of the box! Lol

I make boxes. I just recently bought a spalted tamarind board ...blue.... Yeah, I know.
I'm not dying that board, of course, but I could use it for the maple handle & legs, etc. Getting n2 the ball park of that blue/gray hue will b challenging. I'm using ur dye. Wish me luck!

oh thank god! I'm up to my neck in cut off baby doll heads over here, finally I can start storing them!
I glued sandpaper to a thick sheet of tempered glass. Works great because there is no give at all.
I will have to try that. What glue did you use that will stick to glass?
@@ethanhumphrey5758 I used a permanent spray adhesive. It stick pretty good to the glass.

Most probably a silly question but how did you trim the excess from the top and bottom pieces?
At the table saw and then a quick hit with the sander.

Yep absolutely. You'd probably have to use some tiny ones.

Hey there. I have an answer for you! That weird piece of blue plastic you found deep inside the maple tree you cut down is A PLANT TAG. The grower puts them on the tree to identify the variety of tree. LOL They are meant to be removed before they become embedded.
You must have a sister. The "little boy" came out in you. I recognize that comment - put a baby doll head in it ! 🙂

Do you think the brown dye trick would work on darker woods than maple? I am currently building a box out of some very highly figured Australian Red Cedar (which really is blood-red). Additionally, wouldn't it have been easier to stain it before assembly?
It depends on the wood. You can always try it on a scrap piece beforehand. I wouldn't advise doing this step before construction. There is too much cleanup work like cutting and sanding to do before it's ready for dye.

What bran of clamps are you using? The ones in this video are not the same as in your Amazon tool list. Great looking box, by the way!
These are Bessey F clamps. I'll check my Amazon list.
You can have too many chopping boards, tables, cupboards and bowls but you can't have too many boxes.

I wish he would have shown that part too. Newer woodworker here so I like to see all the steps on how to get to the finished product.

Why do you resaw on the tablesaw instead of the bandsaw? Always makes me nervous having the tablesaw blade fully extended making a through cut like that

I work at a hardwood timber yard. Access to soooo many large offcuts for free. Just ain’t got and can’t afford the tools. So frustrating
When you use the pencil to hold the piece on the table saw, what direction are you applying the pressure?
Down and against the fence. Just enough pressure to keep the piece from moving.
Is the table saw blade extra thin or special in any way?
Nope

There never was 1 n the 1st place. Just the sides glued together.
@@dscritter614 When the top and bottom were glued on the overhang the sides. When he cut the top from the body they were flush.

ok - that was the scariest lid-removal that I have ever seen.....
That plastic was a tree trying to be a river table- but all the other trees just laughed at it so he hid it.
You can't say "About 4 inches" and then have the centimeters to 2 decimal places!!!!
