    As an American with a Latino father, I grew up with baseball. It always seemed simple. Until I thought about explaining it to someone who hadn't known the game all their lives. Cricket has always been a mystery, and seemed like a similarly confusing proposition for someone to explain. But you broke it down in a way even I could understand. Great job.

      Greg, reading the rules regarding a game, any game, is something overrated IMO. Watching the game and videos like this are the best way to get it.
      I have trouble with the understanding of cricket. I became more curious about the sport after seeing the mayhem on the internet about the 2019 world cup final. In my homecountry (Brazil), I only saw one youtuber talking about cricket and it was because he could talk about anything you ask him (his nickname is the book), and I saw a video he made talking about the Indian Super League and how this is something every fan of alternative sports (for us brazilians) should follow. Hell man, cricket here can be defined as afterthought in streaming, with broadcasts only in english.
      But I'm trying. I hope I can get it someday

      @Zues R : Not really. Baseball is simple. Cricket has too much going on with it. The batter has three chances to score a run and a fourth if the pitcher throws the ball outside of the plate. Four balls is an automatic run to a base. Three strikes ( swing and miss or hits out of bounds is an out. You get three outs to an inning. You switch sides at every inning up to nine innings. The amount of scoring you can do depends on your pitcher and your hitters.

    These are some of the basic rules about cricket. It is not a very difficult sport to learn. There are a whole lot of rules than this. I'm American and I been following cricket for over 5 years and know a lot of cricket history. The only way people are going to learn about the sport is to watch it. If you watch a day of a test match, you should be able to get most of the rules. Beginners should watch T-20 first before moving on to other formats. The more often you watch the sport, the more you will learn including the field positions which will take time to learn. I like first class (Test and four day cricket) and limited overs (50 and 20 overs cricket). I've spoken to several people back home about cricket and they know what it is. I'm currently following the Ashes and expecting a big series between India and South Africa especially the 4 match test series which will occur near the end of the year. I learn most of the stuff by watching test matches.

    Hitting the ball into your partner's wickets is NOT automatically out and it is NOT counted as hit wicket.
    The way it works is, if you hit the ball, and it hits someone on the fielding team, and then hits your partener's stumps WHILE he's out the crease, it gets given as a RUN out

      Agreed, that was a bad (and incorrect) example of hit wicket. That poor chap would only lose his wicket if an opposing player had touched the ball before hitting the stumps. And even in this case it would be a run-out, not a hit wicket. Example of hit wicket is when the batsman loses his balance while making their shot and falls onto the stumps, knocking them down.

    Hey Great Video! Just two corrections in Rule #6 at 2:04
    1) Hit Wicket - is when the batter inadvertently hits his own stumps with the bat or any part of his body in the process of hitting the ball.
    2)You CANNOT make your partner out by hitting the ball onto your partner’s stumps as you showed in the video. What happened in that particular clip was that the batter (the striker) hit the ball back towards the stumps at his partner’s (the non-striker) end and the bowler made contact with the ball before it went on to hit the stumps. As the non striker was out of his crease when the ball hit the stumps, he was given out and this form of dismissal would come under “RUN OUT” credited to the bowler and NOT the batter who struck the ball.

    • @newremote
      @newremote Před 2 lety

      Shaurya Negi: Exactly. Although it's very simplified, a lot of this video will be helpful for people starting to get to know the game. But the part of the video about "Hit Wicket, Accidentally Out" is so completely wrong that you have to wonder what the video maker was thinking.
      Hit Wicket has nothing to do with the stumps at the non-striker's end. Hit Wicket is the batter hitting their own stumps while playing the ball or setting off for a run immediately after playing the ball.
      The ball being deflected onto the non-striker's stumps is a different law altogether and is a Run-Out. And it has to be deflected from someone, not just hit the stumps. There is no such law as accidentally out, and they are always called Laws, not Rules.

      Ninh Ly Yeah it does actually seem pretty simple! And I kept thinking, "Ohhh, that's where baseball gets that rule/word/whatever!" One huge difference between Cricket and American sports in general is that we like to artificially stop our games periodically (so we can play ads on TV), but Cricket lets things happen naturally. There is no way an at-bat in baseball could last longer than 7 pitches maximum; we either move the man off the field or on base if it goes further. And they often lst only one pitch! Therefore, innings, and to near extent, games, all last about the same predictable amount of time. But it looks like at-bats in Cricket can last aaaaages! I've always wondered how the matches can last so long, but now I know!

    • @NinhLyUK
      @NinhLyUK  Před 9 lety

      schradeya Especially in Test Cricket, it seems to take aaaaaages to actually play the damn game. But it's not so bad in T20 Cricket, as there's strict time penalties - they have to hurry it up!
      Glad you managed to understand Cricket a little more. It's definitely not like Baseball!

    • @schradeya
      @schradeya Před 9 lety +1

      Ninh Ly I'm so glad I found this video. You really have a knack for taking confusing things and putting them into words anybody can understand! I really, really want to sit down and watch a good match now!!! Maybe not a test match... ;) I don't have that kind of time!
      Yeah, it's NOTHING like baseball!! Well, a _tiny tiny_ bit, in that there are a few words that baseball took from Cricket (I assume), and there is a ball that gets thrown, haha!

    • @NinhLyUK
      @NinhLyUK  Před 9 lety +4

      schradeya You'll find that Cricket and Baseball have shared origins. But that's about the only similarity you'll find.
      I'd recommend watching a T20 game before you head on over to Test Cricket. That'll ease you in for the long long long long long time that a Cricket match is actually played.
      Thanks again for the compliments! :)

    It's funny -- here in the States, everyone who watches baseball says they can't follow Cricket, but it seems to me that baseball is the FAR more complicated game of the two. But this video is fantastic.

      I think you're right. The moment cricket finally clicked with me, I thought, "My goodness, this game is almost moronically simple. Maybe that was the whole reason why I couldn't make sense of it." Meanwhile, I still can't quite figure out baseball.

    • @NinhLyUK
      @NinhLyUK  Před 6 lety

      Indeed! It is surprisingly simple.
      Baseball is too, but you have to watch a few games to know what's going on. (Made a video about that too).

    Fun fact: in the early years (late 1800's to early 1900's), baseballs were stitched like cricket balls are now, once around the circumference of the ball. The 'figure-8' stitching pattern for baseballs was developed later.
