I don’t understand why everybody is busting this guys balls. How do you expect a third officer to become a Captain if he can’t dock his ship? Just because he can hear the pilot doesn’t mean he can’t make a mistake. Looks like he did a great job in difficult weather. Congratulations sir!

  • @tanjim6848

If carrying out pilot’s engine orders is what you called "docking the ship" then I know hundreds of guys including me who did this as a novice deck cadet. And as a 3rd mate, they could have shown how he's cross checking position, writing down the details in bridge movement book, maintaining communication with port authority, other vessels and ship crew. Those things are far more difficult than pulling the telegraph joystick back and forth.

For them who obviously don't really understand.
The captain is the ultimate boss of the ship.
The captain delegated bringing the ship in to the third mate.
The pilot is, in fact, more or less advisory in this matter, and only blamable for giving wrong advise.
The captain is always the boss, and as he delegated this job to the third mate with the advisory help of the pilot, the third mate docks the ship.

He did not dock the ship. He just moved the sticks on the command of the shore pilot, who controlled the whole operation with the tug boats which adjusted the ship long side. These big ships do not have the ability to dock by themselves, especially in a tight space, without tug assistance. Cruise ships can do it and there this video name would have been correct, but on a container ship, no.
