wow i am so glad to see someone pointing out the dramatized struggle of artists and the popular narrative of elliott’s life and music being purely tragic. this is something i frequently get frustrated about and don’t see anyone talk about! because it absolutely is disrespectful to just view the story of his life as just a tragedy. it’s a one-dimensional view and it takes away so much nuance from his music and it takes away his nuance and depth as a person. really appreciate you pointing this out!
I’ve always felt the same way, so I throw it in whenever I can. Thanks for watching 🤘🏻
couldn’t agree more
they took your life apart, and called your failures art - elliott smith, tomorrow tomorrow.
One of my favorite song lyrics ever
you are such a good youtuber dude.
The only videos im exicted for at all
I repeat your words constantly
Housing, healthcare and food. This is the crux of it. An artist doesn’t want to be famous, we just want to survive.
Such a good breakdown of the song! The line “frozen in fear every time we appear” always gave me a sense of like, being uncomfortable in the limelight. Like seeing yourself on camera and realizing how nervous, fearful, out of place you look.
You are a true Elliott Smith fan, my brother
His songs aren't always autobiographic, but I'm guessing there's a certain aspect to this one:
"Moon signed Smith to Kill Rock Stars and put out his second, self-titled album in 1995. While it was recorded in much the same way as Roman Candle, at home, it was promoted heavily, with posters of Smith appearing in record-store windows all over the Northwest." p65 Elliott Smith and the Big Nothing by Benjamin Nugent, 2004
He appeared and performed solo on the 28th July '95 Breakfast Time and Heatmiser were on TV on 1st Jan '96. He recorded vocals for this with Larry in Fall '96.
Should deep dive The Last Hour. Became my favorite song of his. The guitar parts are beautiful, like most of his, and the lyrics paint an interesting story. I find it pretty hard to sing because he’s almost whispering it.
leaving a comment for algorithm purposes. love what u do as always
You never fail to deliver a passionate, erudite analysis on this complex artist. Thank you.
Great video!
Many of his songs are about this subject matter, especially after the Oscars fiasco. specifically the way he was pinned down to be most marketable was as a “sad sack” , a label he has still not been able to shake, and I think it deeply depressed him that he was put in a box in that way and misinterpreted in order to be “successful”. Especially because deep truth and fulfillment were things he clearly desired to have and present in his music, and there’s so much more to his work than the seemingly self-indulgent, confessional emotionality that non-fans and casual fans often see…
Your videos are so impactful and I am so grateful for you putting these out into the world and helping me understand the beauty and complexity of Elliott, his lyrics and his song writing
Growing up I hated getting my picture taken. Still do to an extent. This one and Pretty (Ugly Before) capture that insecurity so well. Great examples of taking a simple topic and making it profound through song. Great job on all these vids
The way I listen to music is this, music / melody first, then look at lyrics later. If the lyrics say something that's horrible, I could still apperciate the song, but won't really listen to it. With Elliott's music, I learned lyrics really can elevate a track. For example, St Ides Heaven was a song I heard and Immediately loved the ascending guitar line in the chorus. I read the lyrics, and now its in my top 10. I feel like there is a middle ground. Everyone listens to mysic differently. My Mom actually usually reads lyrics first and then music. Middle ground is possible.
Loving your videos and excited for your song books! I've been looking for good sheet music for some of his songs for years and often was left quite disappointed. You are a hero and have quite the developed ear!
I wanted to throw in my two cents about the lines "see nothing wrong/completely wrong" as being about the fact that his image is so cleaned up for TV that it appears like there's nothing wrong with him, when in fact his songs are often about what is wrong with him and the world around him. This essentially makes the fact that there is seemingly nothing wrong with him on TV exactly what is wrong about how they picture him on TV to begin with.
I think this is backed up by the previous lines "not surprised at all/but really why should I be?" because he feels like they aren't conveying his true nature on TV, but he knows they would only want to highlight the positive aspects of the musician they are advertising.
i thoroughly enjoy your videos; not only do you give a tutorial of a song, your in depth explanation of the lyrical components, musical composition and mixing of the song is so informative to a point of inspiration. greatly looking forward to you doing shooting star (love tht song)
I like how you get into depth with the production, not just the lyrics or guitar parts. Please consider doing Pink Moon by Nick Drake in the future 🙏
in too depth*
@@ijemand5672 pretty sure it's "into depth" (:
@@AndrewMarc5 pretty sure you are wrong
What a great synopsis and well presented. I’m glad to hear that you laid out an analysis on the trappings of culture creation as well. Good stuff and informative work!
I remember in an Elliott interview one time he was asked what his lyrics meant to one his song and he said something like it's whatever the listener interprets it and thinks it means to them.
I just bought your Elliots books, its crazy!!!! thanks!!
I think this is the best video you’ve made so far, top quality.
nice love the video as always! Your strumming technique really improved, which naturally happens when playing in his style a lot (no more nail strumming i mean as we all tend to do at first).
Nad love the TAB, thanks for the work man🫶🏻
Thanks still working on it hahaha
Hit the balance with success and truth on this one. No need to hesitate on uploading. Ha!
Hey man, just want to say thanks for this video and that i'll make a thumbs (sorry for my english) to every your video. You're great! Thanks!
This is great! So happy I found this channel!
Also this video is amazing. There's more than one lesson here, and I really enjoyed watching and thinking about the idea of fame and ideology.
que trabalho amigo, como grande fã de elliott smith fico muito alegre em saber coisas novas sobre o mesmo
You are great, thank you for everything that you do.
Nice video, I really appreciate the level of detail you bring to these guitar and analysis videos ! To relate what’s been my interpretation to what you said; I always thought of the line “seen nothing wrong” as like ‘yep everything pictured is the “facts”’, whatever the image of him as a celebrity is checks out on a surface level. Yet it’s just not the “truth” of who and what he actually is, which makes it just totally and completely wrong; as in the taking of the pictures (fame) is morally wrong and also a false representation of reality (wrong on two accounts, the completely being false and totally being moral). I think the ‘you’ he references in the opening verse is his celebrity self, hence later he mentions to “become another guy” (and literally says you got yourself to tease and displease in this opening verse). What makes the coin-op TV line pivotal to me is the reference to a “me”, as in he’s acknowledging that embedded within his celebrity image somewhere puppeteering is the truthful him. Theres beauty in the song in that by acknowledging this division (either/or being the language of the divisive, &s being that of the uniting truth) he gets closer to the truth. It’s almost as if this a meta-level song about the narrators perspective that had to be written so they could continue to convince themselves they were pursuing the truth.
this is great - I love the double meaning: wrong = incorrect/immoral. Definitely a narrator's perspective
@@_E_S_P Thanks, I seek and appreciate double meanings and thoughtful interpretations (like yours!). I think we get closer to the truth by validating perspectives and making connections
These are so great man, thanks for doing such an amazing job!
Very good explanation, love the work youre doing
Surprised to see Shane Gillis doing a dance towards the end there!
Great analysis 👍
So good. Love your videos.
Wow
requiem for a dream!
great video! your insights are spot on imo
As always, your videos are amazing!!! Can't wait for the video covering Elliott Smith's voicemail experiment! (lol lol)
oooh what's that?
Very informative as always, thank you
I love your videos, thank you for sharing your time, thoughts and insights. :)
Very insightful and great video as always!
I think “truth” is the wrong way to frame it when we’re talking about art, I like to think of it as human instinct crystallised, it’s too wordy, but it’s the only way I can think of to describing it with out running the risk of turning “truth” into something relative. Creatives have a tendency to treat all things in the same why they treat art, objectively. I think we should keep the two separate in our thinking, even though the two are linked and effect each other. Great video, I think you should go deeper on the concepts in his songs more, I think he studied philosophy in university? And clearly had an understanding of psychology, read Kierkegaard and other people who tackled the two subjects, so there’s plenty to explore there.
This is rad
Fuck yes, thank you so much
This was awesome, thank you! Enjoying the self-titled book tabs as well. Given your music theory knowledge and the number of ES songs you've mastered, would love to hear more music theory analysis. What borrowed chords does ES use? Do his melodies mainly use chord tones, or notes from other scales, etc? And how does he write such long chord progressions that always seem to end in exactly the right place. It kind of seems like magic, but would love to hear your thoughts on whether there's some structure there.
I see what you did there- To-meat-toe To-Mai-toe.
"The method acting that pays my bills, keeps a fat man feeding in Beverly Hills"
13:01 wow… he’s thinking about how HE’S like that…. :( he’s like a wounded bird……
New fan here from the recommendation system. Elliot smith is certainly a songwriter that deserves these in depth breakdowns that are all too scarce here on CZcams. Excited to dig through previous videos and to play along with the guitar parts. As great of a singer and lyricist he was, in my opinion the emotive, creative guitar work is really what makes an Elliot Smith song tick.
As an aspiring artist and songwriter, this song always spoke to me when it comes to creating art and the uncertain consequences of said art. To me, what stands out is the line "so sick and tired of all these pictures of me" which speaks to the inner conflict of both wanting to have your art be shared with others and personally impact them in some way, while also being frustrated that other people may not understand what message you were trying to convey.
Yet he goes on to say "I'm not surprised at all and really, why should I be?" as if he admits that whatever comes of his art and its public consumption of it was to be expected from the start, highlighting this inner struggle even further.
I think it's difficult to wrap your head around other people consuming the art you create as an artist because some of it can be quite personal and you both want others to be impacted by it, but in the "right" way, even though there is no such thing since you don't own your art's meaning once you put it out since the meaning itself is subjective.
Love ur vids btw!!
Great analysis. By the way, what mic do you use? I like it a lot
3:30 I generally love good lyricism and think it can add a lot to a song but I have to admit I do enjoy bands such as Cocteau Twins, who are basically incoherent. What I want to say is good lyricism can add a lot to a song but it’s not everything
Keeping his name alive, thank you for these videos. I love Elliott, if ur interested I write, record and play everything on my music and of course am heavily influenced by Elliott. If you do, check out We All Know You Don’t Know or Get Them Alone first.. peace
I love the lyrics… but as with Ballad of Big Nothing.. I also prefer the alternative lyrics version of Pictures of Me… It feels much more raw and unpolished, and gives a bit more insight into what the song was about.
I can understand why they would make the choice to change “felt cheap and diseased”’to “you got yourself to tease” to make it more palatable to larger audiences.. but damn, it was so good.
I don’t say this to be mean but no way bro just said EYEther/or
