Dubai Road Express Film - Full Movie in HD

- In 1976, Scania commissioned a film to document the maiden trucking journey between Norway and Dubai on a route called the Dubai Road Express. More than four decades later, this film has become a piece of history.
The year prior, Norwegian trucking company Johan Evensen & Sønner had completed its last of 106 journeys to Bandar Abbas on the southern coast of Iran, and was looking for new opportunities.
It was the next year, when the tanker Serpens Constellation had an unexpected breakdown in the middle of the Atlantic, that Jan was given the mission of a lifetime. A necessary spare part, made in Norway, needed to be delivered to Dubai, where the ship could pick it up while en route into the Persian Gulf.
For the drivers of such routes, leaving home meant being away from their families for weeks at a time, often without knowing exactly when they would be back or what challenges they would encounter along the way.
In the end, the Dubai Road Express turned out to be short-lived. Once the inaugural trip was over, transport company Johan Evensen & Sønner made the decision to cancel the route. The loose sand between Doha and Dubai, accompanied by relentless heat that disabled important support systems, meant the route was just not worth the trouble.

That off-road part was about 60-70km long and used to be called the “hell pass”. It ended near Sila area (now in UAE). From Sila to Abu Dhabi it takes about 350 km of nice asphalt road. Now all is clear to drive through all the way.
Greetings from Eastern Arabia!
I did this off road section on my way from Austria to Abu Dhabi with a Scania 111 and a semi trailer in summer 1977 without any problems.
This nice movie is good chance to remember what I did in my youth.
So you were driving before the legal age of having a license?
which one ? The dessert ?
Otmar Posch Excellent experience!
App Magician what his youth would mean his teens and early 20s
Awsome story sir
awesome film no mobile phones no help just had to get on and deal with it thats what you call a real driver.
This times will never come back..
Just buy a 70's truck and drive it. No phone no help, manual, 44h/week :)
just be careful not to crash it at +40km/h because you can die from it
Ok boomer
I have driving the international 27 different countries. I miss those days without mobile phones.
Wow when truck drivers were real men!
Real heroes in their days
Driving through the sand without a road took some brass
The risks were great and the consequences severe if something would've going seriously wrong one would've died out there alone
Thank you for sharing this video it was awesome seeing a sliver of the past
My Father was a truck driver , I still have photos of his truck in the Kuwait desert from that time so it gave me a sense of what it would have been like for him and brought back memories of trips I had as a young boy with him. He passed away several years ago but this brought back so many memories, thanks.
i know the feeling, i can relate, in 1992 i joined two others to drive a Mercedez 608 from Arlberg in Austria to Lahore in Pakistan, i was the co driver, the engine was in need of a rebuild so we had to drive slow.....the journey took three and a half weeks at about 50 kmh with a 24 hour stop in Ankara and a four day stop in Quetta............all in all a journey that i will never forget..............these days i look down from the plane while flying back from India and sometimes we are driving along the road that i had driven and sometimes we fly past the bridges over the Bosforus.
I drove a 111 Scania back then ... but with 6 cylinders and only 280 hp.
Really gorgeous truck !!! Cannot be broken! Over a million kilometers on one damn engine and gearbox. Only needed oil and diesel. Readjust the brakes yourself, drain the water from the compressed air tanks and change a wheel every now and then. And... It rained in, at the end ... It was really a wonderful time!!!!
But despite all the nostalgia and good memoires, i wouldn't want to swap a modern truck for a old one, because the comfort the old ones had was no comfort at all
and they were loud as hell.
An era of peace,Wish could have those times back!
That’s what you called an adventure and a challenge back then. They’d literally had no modern technology. It was done with a map and word of mouth. These drivers were the pioneers of long haul trucking. Fair play to them!
So what? I also used to drive almost 20 years without a Sat-Nav. And using a Map. My first Sat-Nav I got in 2010.
We used to stop at petro stations to ask for the right way when we get lost closed to our destination.
Also, you already could use Landline-Phones back then. It was still expensive but technically doable.
I would reckon such a trip was way easier back then, then now. Because in 2019, there is too much political crazyness around. The driver shown in the video could be my dad. Generation wise.
They weren't stupid and knew how to help themselves, better than many nowadays drivers.
Carsten Hemel Good words!
@@carstenhemel2574 but still at this times there were not many landlines where he drove, also political very unstable countries he passed. Yes, they were pioneers and adventurers. At this times you couldn’t just call Germany or Norwegen from Turkey or even Saudi Arabia. Also not any support or road side assistance, you can’t compare the 70s with the 90s and definitely not with 2000 or later... also the maps were not that accurate than in the 90s or later.
No modern tech, except his (at that time) most modern truck. :P although I appreciated when they showed that man with his old Mercedes, steering left to right to help motivate his truck.
Pioneers and problem solvers. I salute the old school with 35 years driving I’ve worked with a few of them. Sadly the know it alls and pretenders who have done nothing really, could not do it, despite their bravado and fantasy thoughts. A different breed of driver truly adventurous.
I met Arne Knudsen who drove to bandar abbas for Evensen several times on Peter Wessel ferryboat, always nice to listen to his stories. Nice video. My longest trip was in 2008 with pregnant cows from Holland to Uzbekistan.
I lived in Dubai emirate from 1973 to 2001, and remember with nostalgia the sights and things shown in this film clip. The time period must be in the 1970's. The shipping agency "G.A.C" or Gulf Agency Company has been operating in Dubai for many years, with Mr Tors Sandgren (from Norway) as the manager. Their supply boats GAC1 and GAC2 would be moored at the creek by the British Embassy. We knew some people who were with G.A.C and once went on board one of the GAC supply boats which had 2000HP diesel engine.
The highway in the lower Gulf, Kuwait, Saudi Arabia, Qatar, U.A.E and Oman is all paved with modern facilities to make travel easy today. The truck and driver took quite some wear in the desert, don't know if the truck had air-conditioning.
A much easier route would have been Norway to Bandar Abbas, Iran, then loading the freight onto coastal boats or GAC boat to Dubai, a short hop. This would avoid the sandy stretch between Qatar and U.A.E.
Tor Sandgren was Swedish not from Norway
The company called Johan Evensen og Sønner actually did 106 trips to Bandar Abbas with spare parts to ships. They startet with this in 1969..

solid trucks, but rust and rot like hell and no comfort at all and noisy as fuck, no airco so hot in the summer and cold in the winter, so a hard life alright.
@@ronniedoorzon1576 Very hard to ride, but the noise of V8 is pure metallic music!
(Maybe for some hours, not complete weeks... Hahaha)
Fantastic film! What an adventure! These old films had an air of panache and yet they had such simplicity which you don’t see anymore. It’s also amazing to see how much Qatar and the UAE have changed in the last 40 years, they are no longer a desert outback.
Awesome!! Full respect to this driver and other drivers that ever did this run. Im pretty sure I don't have the mental state of mind to even contemplate doing such a journey, and I drive for a living but not on this scale. To be on your own, no mobile phones, no backup, no nothing!! Digging your way out, I can only say "WOW" It takes a special breed. Serious respect here....
Why did they do this? What were they transporting
Any one could Tel me what time or period this was

Did a similar trip, but from Sweden to Bahrain via Syria in 1975 . 110 km desert from Jordanian to Saudi at that time. Today it's paved. 55 degrees C and no AC or fridge. Also got stuck, but my Robson Drive worked so no need to use a shovel. Nice, since I didn't have one :). So much fun to look at this movie.

Ne mutlu TÜRKÜM DİYENE !!!
Anywhen somebody asked me what kind of scandinavian music i like ... My answer was: Abba, Roxette & Scania V8 ... great report, this movie !
Wir hatten damals etliche 140/141er mit ausgeräumten Auspuff .............man war das ein Klang.
Then check out Wardruna, Heilung, Danheim... nordic folk.
”If you’re an explorer , you’re an explorer ; therefore you always go forward.”
Positive thinking at ca 30.25.
I’ve been working to these days over 30 year as a truckdriver in Europe , but this was the ”real deal”.
我也是卡車司機,很佩服影片中的主角,也很羨慕他,跑那麼長的公路,開Scania卡車在沒有衛星導航年代勇敢地跑完這趟任務。
LY22251. Scania lbs 140 S 46. 14,2l V8. 350hp. Max vehicle weight 28 tonnes, 14,8 tonnes cargo. First registration march 1976. Taken off the road in 1993.
21:48 That music was cued just at the perfect moment, just check out that camel's funky moves.
Yep! She's got the groove! 🤩
As they would say during an episode of Project Binky by Bad Obsession Motorsports... "That camel is getting the funk out!" 🤣
That camel cannot walk freely. Its front legs are tied.
Did you see the chain?.. poor animal..
@@taunuslunatic404 the second has broken the rope . Stupid habit so that they can't run away
No mobile, no gps, oldschool technics. Nice movie, brave driver and team.
Been there, done that, but I used my Robson Drive when i got stuck. It really helped. This was in 1975 and I drove a Volvo F88. Great movie that brings back a lot of memories. Thanks!
He mentioned at 36:08 quote "I'd hoped to use my Robson drive in the loose sand, but neither it nor the bogie hoist works in the heat", that must've a pain to deal with.
Such a wonderful, wonderful film! Thank you for taking the time to commission and make this.
I got sad when i knew it was the end. Now what the hell am i going to watch after this.
Good words!

This film makes me very emotional...my father was an international transport driver...a real giant of a Man and Skilled driver140 has a whistle like sound because of it's turbocharger. It's one of my beloved sonic memories of my babyhood. Thanks for the upload.....
That Was Hard, Without Navigations, Without Phones, Without Technology, WOW. Respect💪
All these gadgets we only created buddy. These doesn't create humans.
If we use our senses correctly it would be far more accurate than gadgets with sensors.
@16:08 that unique Scania sound of its turbo winding down. They had a special pressure valve that kept oil pressure while it did. Great memories of my first truck a 110 4 x 2. Didn't go outside the UK with it but I did with my later 140, 111 and 113 Topline (fruit from Spain, Italy and Intervention beef to Jugo.) the last Scania I owned but not the last truck.
This 140 in the film is a later one (looks a 141 spec) as mine had the earlier grey trim and wheel and the very useful 'Tickle Brake' that just put the trailer brakes on. Handy while pulling other people's trailers. Got tennis elbow getting 1st gear as it was RHD. Least used gear in the box so with the splitter used 8.
The Middle East lads were complete heroes. Did a couple of runs with Radclive Transport past Turkey when work was short and they earned their keep in more ways than one. Same with Astrans lads. The likes of these will never be seen again.
140/141 had the best turbo sound ever
Noise of centrifugal oil filter slowing down?
@@billalbion No that stopped pretty quickly due to oil drag. It was the turbo running down as (for those days) they were big old turbines. Scania built in a valve to maintain oil pressure while it did.
Vilken fantastisk film! Transporthistoria när den är som bäst!
Loved it! Grew up with my Dad driving 111 Scania! Brought back lots of memories
Im an old soul even though I was only 2 when this video was made. Love the music, the scenes, the trip down memory lane. Real eye opener for one that is not the roughing it out type. Thank you for putting this up.
Did this many times in 1977/78 driving for Redcliffe Roadways, I ran from the UK to Qatar and Kuwait with frozen goods regularly, brings back fond memories. Never did the extra bit to Dubai though.
What how? You must be out for months
I still have this on vhs "Trailer Trucking Video" from mid 80s. Thanks for uploading this!
Best and realest trucker movie ever!
Thanks for sharing.
I still remember seeing that movie at our Scania dealership in West Berlin.Must be 40+ years ago.
That Scania 140 was groundbraking when it came with the 14 litre V8 350hp in 1969.
What an amazing storytelling video!
What a difference it was in the workplace at that time.
No communication at all except communication radio.
Yourself was the best boy, simply.
Correct me if I am wrong.
Like this very much, seen it more than once, I used to have a Scania LBS 140-77 for five years as my own and after that I drow for others, it was in the 80-90 until 2011 when I stopped working, it was a nice time with good buddy´s and friends, ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
Beautiful movie. Nostalgic and endearing at the same time. In the 13:18 minute the lights go out and two seconds later two Spanish Pegaso trucks appear. A pleasant surprise for me.
Awesome oldschool film!!!! Thank you!!!!
... And somewhere in the Desert, he met Franz Mersdonk and Günther Willers on their Backtour... 😁

38:44 It is so kind that they've put those signs in the desert, left Al-Adeed, straight to Al-Sila, right for death :D
🤣
Can you imagine coming up to a sign like that today? That would scare the crap outta ya, for sure. lol
"Mustn't stray off course... mustn't stray off course... oh shit I don't have a compass! Wait a minute... I don't see any more tire tracks... fuck"
@Gappie Al Kebabi???
I'm guessing but thinking the death signs mean land mines
@@JonSnow-bc6ro More like a 1000 or so kilometers of empty desert with no signs of life.
And look how much Dubai has changed since this film!!!!
yeah, no skyscrapers in Doha, Abu Dhabi, or Dubai!
This film just makes me think that truck driving is something that should never be taken for granted. Nor then, not now, nor never.
They are in charge of delivering all the goods we buy or, in the case of the film, delivering a piece of a ship so it too can provide for us.
And now, in the 21st century, I do hope this truck or the livery or whatever, make their way to ETS2 (or ATS!) as a mod... I don't know. It sort of feels right and it'd be a little homage to Jan and every single driver who risked their lives in such conditions.
I also hope Jan and his family are doing well.
What a film it was...!
Really nice video! And wow, what an experience. Swedish truck driver here. Drive safe all you drivers out there. 🇸🇪
A lot of respect fot the truckers of that time. No navigation, no phone, no airco. No entertainment, like TV ore a nice sound system. Just yourself. The real truckers. I am on the road for more than 25 years. Sill loving it. I remember the time also but we didn't drove so far. Just France, Germany and a vieuw other countrys.
What an incredible adventurous journey in a time when no GPS, mobile phone or satellite phones. Remember my time of stay in Dubai 200-2005 and GAC as my customer visiting their offices in Jabel Ali Free Zone....
A piece of history. Brilliant.
A Great film, thank you Scania for uploading this. :)

Toen ik in 1981 bij Scania Nederland begon te werken als bedrijfsschool leerling samen met 7 andere jongens was dit de eerste film die ik zag over Scania. Leuk om dit weer terug te zien na zoveel jaar...
inderdaad mooie filmpje
Back in the days when this was still an amazing and wonderful job
why did it change

what a nice film. thank you for putting it in!
Thanks for this a great piece of history indeed.
THAT's a breed almost extinguished !!! Respect for those truckers !
On another note, when you see what Dubaï looked like only back in '76, you can tell where the money goes...
Dubai was still rich by back then and very important trading center
When the going is tough, the tough keep going..... Respect. Awesome movie.
Amazing film. I was born in june 1975. I didn’t know they had cassette players in 1976. I remember 8 tracks as a small child. Wow. Look how peaceful it was traveling across these countries
Interesting information revealed by this video: due to dispute on the area between Qatar, Saudi Arabia and UAE there was no paved roads connecting through the area at the edge of empty quarter and the Arabian Gulf.
This is a documentation of a formation of nations then.
So there were disputes back then as well?
Well a lot more. Saudi qatar and UAE have fought many wars in the 17th and 18th century. Now it is much more peaceful
@@Deira854 not war's between states as we know them today, it was more tribal wars over resources (water and vegetation areas). The land didn't have significant importance and borders disputes started only when oil was discovered.
The other day I was reading a book about Trucial Oman Scouts, Military units formed by British mandate in Northern coast of Oman (UAE today). The most interesting piece of information is how British officers identified the limits of each sheikhdom sovereignty on land is by Bedouin tribes. They ask each tribe to whom they are submitting and based on that the feedback they draw lines between each sheikhdom and hence his own police force become jointly with TSO responsible for security in that area.
It happened tribes changed loyalty and hence lines were shifting until early 1960s when tribes started to move into Villegas built by rulers for them so they maintain their boarders lines preserved (hence preserving their rights to oil reserves in the area).
@@omarfarooq5828 yes, when oil was discovered these vast wild empty deserts become important to each sheikhdom. Before oil no one really bothered about it except isolated oasis because of water and dates crops.
@@dongrandmaster3787 True. There were no modern states back then, but names of the places were the same. The most famous war in the Gulf was in 1793 between the first Saudi state and Abu Dhabi. This war prevented Wahabi ideolgy spreading in to UAE

Impecable..... Ese es un viaje largo todo mi respeto al conductor.. 👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏
Really good insight on how the truck driving industry is and its still like that here in Australia, dirt roads all over Australia, as well as highway's freewys that do lead to you to your next payload, STAY LOADED TRUCKER'S
Não é só no Brasil que carreteiro sofre! Muito bom o filme!
So amazing film
Great movie, love to see things back to basic.
I reckon if that truck had both rear axles driven with a diff lock , it would have probably made it through the desert sooner & saved Jan a lot of time and digging in that horrendous heat & storm , good film , love scanias, my dad had one like Jans but a 6 cylinder engine instead of a V8 , went everywhere in it , never let us down in 8 years my dad had it , not once did it break down , M reg 1974 - 1982 I do miss it even after 40 years !!
Países nórdicos....ao Oriente....aventura pura!!! Scania. ..bruto
Just look at this adventure and compare it with todays trucking, same route today would take 5 times faster, but back than this fascinating
This route would not be possible without crossing through 1 or 2 war zones today
faster!! you would die today if you do it!
the tacho would make it longer xD
5x faster and 5x chiper and that mean 5x less money to driver

What a great journey. I like long travel too. Traveling around the world.
Interesting film, I’ve had a long history of living and working in Dubai, and working with Scania and Al Shirawi👌🏻😎
Years ago here in Ohio a bookstore/newsstand imported Truck magazine from the UK. I read it every month; that’s where I first heard of driving trucks across 2 continents, without any of the technology we take for granted today. I grew up reading paper maps, too! My hat is off to the folks who did that job! I drove semi trucks OTR for 14 years as a second career, after 25+years in a factories-I much preferred the driving! The world is a much different place these days, that’s for sure.
Enjoyed watching every second !
We did have 2 Scania Trucks there did drive from Denmark to Saudi Arab also in 1980. that Truck did drive with Mango Juice from Denmark to Saudi Arab, it was Juice from Coro Food in Denmark i remember.
My first "Big" truck driving was in a 141. Lot of sound and....oh, 8.20 I heard a Danish "Goddaw" :-)… you felt the road in the 141. Next I drove a 113, 143, 143 Streamliner and my last truck was a 124. Now Im an engineer and sit behind a desk all day. But I have a hightadjustable desk that has about 250 Watts !!! Wonder if I can install a V8 on the desk instead of the 250 watt engine ??
