He was my drum teacher. He upped my skills in 1000 fold. I always admired his skills.
I know he was a teacher! Is he as nice as he looks?
He is the most kind of heart. But more importantly he has a lot of patience with you as a student. We even had drumclass outside one time when it was hot. Crazy fun!
@@Gallardosteve can I get lessons too
You was realy teached by stef broks??? WOW
@@Gallardosteve Nice to hear. Obviously incredibly talented and respect but when he played in my home town i was told he arrogantly just tried to show every drummer up
I love the death metal logo font "Hemiola" hahaha.
"Blast Beasts" "use to make fun...now im obsessed."
thats erbody
Jazz drummer turned metal drummer reacts...
I wish, my fusion drummer dad still hates them. He's elitest as fuck though, the other day he called the new Ulcerate album "4/4 pop music with double bass".
these aren't the blast beats your daddy used to listen to
The way to have success on this channel:
1. Play hemiola
hemiola in his words = any sort of metric modulation or polyrhythm
WillBurhans mmm actually it’s 3:2, so it couldn’t be “any” ;)
Ancke no i’m not just talking about this video. he literally talks about “hemiola” i’m pretty much every single prog drummer video, i’m not just talking about this one.
WillBurhans Hemiola as he refers to it, correctly, in “every single Prog drummer video” is 3:2 what are you going on about brah.
@@RobertoReyesChHC WB is bitter
I'm so happy you're reacting to Stef Broks. He plays with such ease and finesse. Dont stop at this one, Laments of an Icarus and Singularity are some of my favorite drum vids on CZcams. It's an absolute shame Textures isnt a band anymore. Their discography is flawless and it still keeps me up at night that we wont get any new music from them :(
MY BOI
Trevor Owen ily Tdog
Dude, yes "Singularity" is just amazing. He plays it with such ease.
We might see something from them some day, it's just not an album tour cycle deal cause....money. Textures doesnt have a weak album.
what album would you recommend for a noob?
one of my fav drummers
Stef is definitely one of the best drummers in the prog-scene (and beyond that) and very underrated I think. Growing up with the Textures albums it really helped me look at drums differently in general, and how to utilize drums more like a musical rather than just a rhythmical tool. I decided to learn this song in order to improve my skills (cover video is on my channel!) and it helped me massively. But it only took me about 1.5 years or so to learn the fucking thing, but hey 😂😂
Also, go check out his Laments of an Icarus and Singularity playthroughs if you haven't yet!
I am so glad you reacted to this! Textures are one of the more overlooked bands in the modern prog scene in my opinion. Yeah literally everyone says everyone is underrated but I truly believe these guys were special. Large part of my love for them is Broks himself who is, as you can see, a complete beast haha.
Unlike let's say Postones, he loves to groove but he approaches it from a completely different angle, more death-metaly due to his insane footwork! Shame they broke up but I am so glad people are still discovering them. As for my recommendations, think you'll dig Adam Janzi, respect Ben Koller and love Kenneth Schalk!
Oh and absolutely check out Dirk Verbeuren and his Dirk blasts, the guy literally invented his own style of blastbeats and it's nuts.
VOLA
prog?
Ben & Converge definitely worth mentioning. You just mentioned Ken Schalk too from Candiria ooof. Dude was doing polyrhythms and insane syncopation for Metal before it became a thing along with MESHUGGAH who requested they open up their first show ever in New York. It was the hardcore punk guys who were the first to experience ‘SHUG and truly give them a welcome here in the states they moshed to their breakdowns 🤘🏽 But yeah Kenneth was unique in the sense that he didn’t do the typical kick drum riff sync in Metal yet he still grooved hard and served the songs well while being flashy.
I've seen Textures twice live and they're just phenomenal. Im more of a death metal guy but they put on one hell of a show!! I was stuck in a trance watching them lol Btw I'm Colin H from patreon, you'll have to let me know if there's a way to donate more than just the monthly fee, I'm going to get merch but I'd rather put forth 100% of a donation instead of just your merch cut towards something to help the channel, like new speakers or really anything you need man. Hope all is well!
Their old stuff is so similar to strapping young lad, which is really one of the first crossover death metal groups. No wonder you love them :)
Laments of an Icarus.....volume way up!
You lucky bastard - I never had the chance the see the band live sadly...
However, I saw Daniel, theyre last vocalist perform with a band he left to join Textures, which was sad because I think he fitted that band better, And because I think Erik is The vocalist of Textures.
Oh, and that band came to my country twice so I saw them both times they were in my area, and I have to say that they were a pretty kickass mathcore band - I got their first and only cd, shirt, some posters and stickers, which I still have to this day. Crazy to think it was 10 years ago...
@@19RaxR91 I was lucky enough to see Textures supporting Amorphis and spent the whole Amorphis set drinking at the bar with Daniel. He's a really top chap and he loves him a few beers.... I miss Textures....
impressive drumming skills but an even more impressive clean shave 🤩 smooth and close
Straight Jarheading it
absolutely love this band they are so criminally underrated \m/
H E M I O L A ------ want that metal shirt
You must absolutely check out his fusion jazz band exivious ....possibly better than his work in textures and I LOVE his work in textures.
DUDE. Exivious is just so sexy
They are legit.
Exivious is a band Garret will surely appreciate. Very jazzy, with a lot of improvisation and 100% instrumental. Should check them out!
+1 on this!
he's in Exivious?? haha, I had no idea.
One of my absolute favorite bands. Laments of an Icarus is another must listen by them.
Yesssssss
been waiting for a Textures react, nicee.
I love Stef & Textures! Not trying to be a grammar nazi but his last name is Broks. Only 1 “O”
Finally - Someone reacting to this guy, who sadly had to stop his journey with one of the most underrated bands in metal.
With that said, I do think that Laments of an Icarus or Singularity show his particular style even more than this song.
Still - cant wait to see what do you think.
Singularity is an absolute monster of a drum part. And the groove in the verses of icarus is one of the most brutal things I've ever heard. Hemiola ftw once again 😂😂 Stef Broks is such a beast!
@@doctajuice well, I wouldnt call it a monster of a part, but is quite awesome. However, the tracks that blow me away, and which Im trying to learn are Milestone and Suns Architect - and not that there arent other more insane songs of theirs, but they are the ones I Actually can currently learn to play. Im basically half way done with Milestone, but its little intricasies are something to master and master.
First Textures song I ever heard was "Timeless" and I still remember getting goosebumps at the intro, with that delayed-sounding beat on top of the 5/4. This dude interprets grooves so interestingly and along with the impressively-versatile vocalist (de Jongh), make Textures a super underrated metal outfit. Really sucked hearing they disbanded.
De Jongh wasnt the singer anyomore on their last albums.
He sounds like every other boring prog vocalist in 2020, yawnfest
Yes! Stef is incredibly talented and unique for this genre. Mind bending metrics and groove with technique and chops
I'm sure in the back of my mind I know all these bands I love that you cover have great drummers but I love watching your reactions cause I feel like they highlight just how good they really are.
His placement and and dynamics are perfect and explosive there could not be better drumming to that song
Thanks for reacting to the dude. I love the band and his drumming is fucking sublime!
LOVE that you reacted to Stef! He's so damn GOOD! please do more :D
When these guys announced they were done...my heart was broken, it still is a bit...watching your video is helping to mend!
“The Modulations Within” Hemiola’s first album title for sure.
haha
A lot of people give him shit because they think he's so off time ...but listen back. Every beat had a spot. Every ride had a place to set the next... professional. Amazing.
Yes!!! I really enjoy the commentary being in the videos again. The supplementals are like an added bonus of awesomeness broken down into digestible bites. Keep it up!!
I saw Textures twice at the same festival 2 years running, this song made me react like you did each time!
Troy Wright- Every Piece Matters
Another cool new band I've been introduced to Thanks to your channel!
I remember when one of you’re videos showed up in my recommendations back when you had 6k subscribers...nice to see your channel getting big!
Sick vid as always man! This is a new one for me too, this dude has amazing blasts
You deserve my clicks and things after that confusion in the intro 😂
Cool you did Textures’ drummer Stef 👌🏿, makes me proud being from Holland. You should really check their debut album Polars, interesting brutal drums on that album, simply amazing.
i have watched this reaction at least 10 times. i love the actual drum vid, but your reaction is just priceless!!! great content!!!
Soooo clean!
One of my favorite metal drummers for sure!
Glad you covered Stef Broks he is so great!
Stay sane there G-Man ... good to see you enjoy one of the finest bands of my homecountry .... your smile says it all. Stay safe G-Man !
Reaaally looking forward to the supplemental. Your supplementals as well as your way of commenting the drummers' styles is helping me a lot when writing grooves and fills. Keep up the great work Where's one-Dad!
I never though you would do a Stef Broks reaction. For personal reasons, you made me very proud of him. Thanks! Love
I am so glad you have reviewed this!! unreal drummer! We got to play with them in Manchester UK years ago and It was incredible to watch side stage!
I love how much you've embraced our music. I love watching you enjoy it! Let the metal consume you!
My God! I had no idea he was that good! Loved it!
Their Silhouettes album changed my life. I love his drumming.
It looks like this video made you really happy. I think that’s the whole point of metal, bringing emotion to the listener. Glad you enjoyed, love your videos!
Your face around the 4:00 minute mark is just wonderful!
Incredible drummer, and one of the best modern metal albums ever 🤘
I miss them 😩
Man, this was so much fun!
Stef is a great drummer who writes incredibly fun parts to practice and play that accompany the craziness of the music very well. He has another vid from the same recording session of their track: "Laments of an Icarus" it’s a worthy watch ^^
Singularity is better!!!
I see Textures, I click like.
I forgot how much of an animal this drummer is. Gonna have to revisit some Textures stuff!
Same dude, same
Thanks for introducing me to this band.
Aww yeah! Seen these guys lots of times live, Stef was even my drum teacher for a couple of years! Still very sad about them breaking up.
Thanks for yet another great review! Guess who has a new drummer on his favorites list? I'm really wondering how I could miss out on this band until now! Blown away...
Stef Broks is a fine oiled Machine.. His playing on Textures first album is mind blowing. His playing on Exivious' first album is that as well ❤️🙏
you are fucking hilarious.. some of the best content online right now.
Everybody started out hating metal drumming, then the awakening happens with the great bands and it all falls in to place eventually
The video for this song is amazing too
This is the only "react to drumming videos" channel that i genuinely enjoy, don't know why. Saludos desde Argentina
Yes!!!
I love stef and textures. I also love how stef is (or was idk) a drum teacher at a local college here in the netherlands. A buddy of mine did an audition for the college a couple of years ago and asked me to play bass for him. Got to meet stef and he was such a nice guy
Excellent reaction and excellent Couchmen cap! 😂
Well that was fun to watch.
Love the post-production HEMIOLA
That Hemiola Deatj Metal logo coming down in the middle was the best part.
I fucking LOVE textures ! :D
Yes Textures! The song Singularity is so good too!
"he's dancing" that sums it all about him.
Please make a "Hemiola" merch!
Yay Textures! Zman/Timeless by them is also sick!
your videos help keep me sane bud. think you're gonna be fine too
My suggestion, finally! Instant like! Yes, he's a fucking beast, and what I like about him the most is that he plays very musically. His parts are an additional layer of music instead of being just an accompaniment that happens somewhere in the background. Glad you finally checked him out.
You should also check out his work in Exivious, it's just as mind blowing as this is.
I was just thinking the other day of how you should watch Stef. Hurray!
Boooooja, insane stuff. Stay healthy :-) Greetings from Germany .-)
“Opposed to... fuck man I gotta get out” 😂😂😂😂
I really want to feel like you did this and the contortionist just for me because I've been spamming your comments for Stef and Joey. This is great. Stef is an absolute legend and Textures is crazy underrated in the djent prog scene.
Saw these guys live 10 years ago, best live band I have ever seen. Broks played all the blast beats faster live than on the albums :D
Finally!
Interesting fact about stef broks that ties textures in with meshuggah & gojira.
Textures 3rd album was released 1 week after meshuggah released Obzen which is the album with bleed on. The opening track to textures album has the exact same kick pattern as bleed. Later that year in october, gojira released the way of all flesh and the track esoteric surgery again had the exact same pattern
For quite some time Gojira was the supporting act for Textures.
One of my favourite bands! SUPER underrated. I love Stef's style. I hope they come back again!
Check the video of the song Singularity. It's one of their best songs drum-wise!
New Garrett video? Auto like. 👍
Lol. “Take a break buddy” That’s great.
R.I.P. Textures 😢
This was a very fin reaction to watch. Also the song is dope and the drumming just exquisite.
Florent Marcadet - Treasure This Pain next! Pleeeeeeaaaaase!
fucking awesome video!
Haha thanks for the funny & detailed analysis! Listen to our other stuff if you want more of that kind of rhythmic modulations ;) cheers dude, you rock!🤘🏻
I'm more death/black metal but this band and especially the drummer is absolutely amazing
Another excellent video, congratulations Garrett ! Anyone know if Stef Broks is in another group since Textures ? (god I miss these guys ... so much)
Can we take a sec to appreciate the cutting skills?
The best Drums
God I miss this band so much.
we need a shirt for the death metal font Hemiola logo!
Revocation - spastic, let's goooooo!
yaaasssss
Love me some Textures! Now when are we going to get an Intronaut reaction?
Textures rules. You rule.
" Obsessed with blast beats" MY KINDA MAN
3:54 lol same here when I heard that the first time
Textures!!!!!!!!! One of my favourites of 2000s scene . Sad to know they split up.
