It's normal that you can't understand native speakers, that's because the words you hear aren't still solid in your memory, or because you need to learn more vocabulary in Spanish.I honestly don't think Spanish speakers speak that fast.When I was learning English I felt native speakers spoke super fast, but as I improved my listening comprehension by listening to people speaking more and more at normal speed , I could gradually understand them, to the point that nowadays, I can understand about 90% of spoken English, and I can even understand the "harder" accents (in my opinion), such as the British and the Australian accents.The only thing I'm still lacking is the ability to speak more fluently, although I'm progressing.
@@gerlautamr.656 The point that I think is most relevant is not that native speakers have an OBLIGATION to slow down and enunciate with non-native speakers but that it is a courteous thing to do, and helpful and empathetic if one cares about the non-native understanding what's being communicated.
It is absolutely true (have experienced it many times) that native speakers of Spanish will overestimate the capacity of the "know-Spanish" gringos to understand them. I'm sure native English speakers do the same to non-natives.
@@srbaruchi I totally agree with you on everything.On my part, I have to say that whenever I meet a non-Spanish speaker I try to speak as clearly and slowly as possible, because I know how it feels not to be able to understand everything that's being said, but I know that most Spanish speakers don't do that, unfortunately.

I'm a native Spanish speaker and I see this
Native speakers blend words together if the last letter of one word is a vowel and the first letter of the next word is also a vowel. The syllables collapse into one. This is what I find the most difficult in listening to conversational Spanish between native speakers. I wouldn't say they're speaking in an unclear way, but in a way I can't understand. Yet

The mashing together of sounds occurs in English too. I suspect this is true of all native first language speakers.

I personally think it's not very effective and frustrates my students when they have to go in the real world and speak to Spanish speakers. Yes, l do my best to speak clearly but I don't really slow down that much because I want you to get used to listening to a more realistic pace. At least I try not to hahaha. How do you like that? @@learner247 A mi tambien. Muy frusturado que puedo entender en CZcams pero no entiendo nada desde la gente en la calle. La mayoriya hablan muy rapido o borran letras (por ejemplo, dicen "do" no "dos"). Y tambian dicen usando mucas modismos que no signifacan nada en otras culturas o idiomas. En fin, necesitamos practicar pero este es frustrando por seguro.
If people spoke in English or French as fast as they do Spanish I won't understand them either. Sometimes I shout at youtube: slow the f*** down, why so rushed, is there anyone waiting for you? hahaha.
@@bluceree7312 Creo que el problema es menos porque la velocidad y más porque el jerga. Puedo entender Brenda, por ejemplo, a la alta velocidad (por ejemplo, a dos veces), pero no puedo entender el español en muchas pelis. :(

She obviously is speaking slowly and clearly. I've just entered the A2 level yet can never understand a native speaker; still, I understood much of what she said in this video. She's using easy words. I find Spanish to be quite alien in many ways: the many, many (and seemingly superfluous) prepositions and articles that aren't used in English, the dreaded and (as of yet) unknown subjunctive, the endless irregular verbs (especially, apparently, in the past tense), and the significant variances in syntax. So far I'm learning mostly with DuoLingo and Babbel but am pretty sure I'd benefit from structured instruction. That and a much better memory for new words. :-) Por tanto, I've subscribed to this channel. 🙂 Who knew that listening to Spanish for comprehension was it's very own skill.
I am so glad that videos like this exist. Not only is she talking about tips to understand spoken Spanish, but she is doing it in Spanish. I took Spanish all 4 years of high school, and I can read, write, and speak. But one thing my high school curriculum lacked was plenty of practice with dictation. We occasionally did dictation, but not enough to make a huge impact
It's an interesting phenomenon because I speak English and while I know a decent amount of words said in this video, I am not fluent at all and could not perfectly interpret the words that you were saying; and yet I completely understood the message you were getting across. Que interestante!
I'm on the same boat! I used to work at a pizza place and my boss only spoke spanish, so I understand quite a bit.. I just can't speak it. Some day I'll be able to converse! I hope you can too!

2.5 for Dominican Republic speakers. Jaja
Even in 1.5, listening to her is still much clearer than listening to telenovelas. Probably because she uses basic words.

It’s wonderful for learners that the teacher’s speaking is clear! Just remember that English speakers also have different accents and dialects just like Spanish speaker, so when we speak to people on the street they may not sound as clear. But it’s not wrong.

If anyone on here finds the regular speed easy, speed it up more until it is comfortable for you or even a challenge.
OR ... you could just feel good (for a few minutes) about listening at normal speed and understanding without subtitulos.

Me ayudó mucho cantar con los canciones en español. Es fácil aumentar tu habilidad de pronunciar las palabras, porque no tratas de pensar. Ni siquiera necesité conocer las letras en inglés. Cuando las escuché más tarde en contexto, ya podía decirlas .
La verdad, eres muy fácil comprender. No hablas con muchas jergas, y la velocidad es bien. Cuando vivía en Panamá, no podía comprender a nadie. El acento y usa de las jergas era demasiado.

Remember that not everybody speaking your mother tongue is talking in an „appropriate“ way 😉 there are „hard dialects“ (obviously existing in any language) I don’t even understand in my „first language“ 😳 this saying I don’t expect people in (to me) foreign languages to be even able to change their habits of talking just for helping me in understanding them ☺️ Communication with people speaking foreign languages as well is much easier because they know the „hurdles“ from own experiences being able to adjust 🤓 English (my third language) spoken teaching videos made by hispanohablantes to improve my Spanish (my fifth language) is helping me a lot since it’s obviously easier for me to switch between two foreign languages 🙄 I didn’t realize before 😜
