I love how after 14 months of brutal torture at the hands of the North Koreans, Bond shows no physical or psychological repercussions of his imprisonment. He gets a haircut and shaves his beard, and suddenly all that is completely dropped like it never happened
I guess the plot couldn’t afford to worry about that. It was probably just assumed that he’s been through so much that that’s nothing.

I mean that's whole point of Bond and in particular of Pierce's Bond. He is stone cold killer with invulnerable stamina, under facade of suave sexmaniac gentleman.
That's impressive - like being the catering company on the actual Titanic. It's a claim to fame that certainly indicates talent but it's definitely tinged with some ambivalence.
360Effects To each his own, but I think this one was BY FAR the worst Bond movie. Its somehow even more dated that the earlier movies. QOS is definitely flawed, but to me DAD is flatout unwatchable.
The first 1/3 of the film had a good serious tone to it, however when the adaptive camouflage crap and ice palace came into it, it was like all thrown together in a typical slap happy CGI manner.
Eh, for me it falls apart the moment Bond walked into the hotel in Hong Kong. The tone immediately shifted into a Roger Moore-esque Bond film, and after how serious the film had been before that point it felt too jarring.
If they could have actually done that infamous CGI scene for real, it would probably be among the greatest stunts in the series. I would have rather they have made it less epic but used practically effects than green screen the whole thing. I won't deny that the music is epic though.
He is the truest bond when it comes to the books and I believe his movies would have had the best overall quality consistency. Maybe he wouldn´t have been as popular as connery, but his movies would all be relatively solid. While connery has hits(Goldfinger) and flopps(Diamonds are foreever) Not that any of the movies were bad, that is completly subjectiv.
Calvin can I be honest with you? I've owned die another day on DVD for about 12 years. Why? Because of childhood nostalgia. I liked it as a kid. After all brosnan was my introduction to bond.
+jaws Exactly. DAD has its shit writing and some over the top shit, but it's still enjoyable. If the film kept the same tone as the pre title sequence and didn't go so over the top later in the plot, I feel like it'd battle Goldeneye as Brosnan's best Bond
I honestly love the fact Zao also had a gadget filled car. It actually put one of the villains on equal footing with Bond busts out the toys in a car chase.
I watched this at the cinema and even then I thought it was terrible. Halle Berry was absolutely dreadful. Possibly the worst bond girl ever. And I didn't really like Toby Stephens as the villain. I wish they stuck with Colonel Moon's look at the start of the film which felt more threatening as a villain. Zao was a decent henchman and I admit I did like the car scene in Iceland. Loved Rosamund Pike as Miranda. That was a decent role, but it felt underused unfortunately. I thought everything in the film seemed fine until after the sword fight scene. That's when it started to go downhill with that ice palace idea, Icarus. Particularly Bond being chased by that beam and then the windsurfing scene. My fucking god what were they thinking? Things REALLY got out of hand during the final confrontation on the plane. Flying it through the Icarus beam felt so unrealistic. I doubt it would just be able to fly through something like that without exploding instantly. It's bullshit.
I actually like the ice palace. If they make an ice hotel, I don't mind them having an ice palace. I think an action scene in the real ice hotel in Switzerland in a new bond film would be awesome.
Tommy Carr The biggest problem of the film was Icarus. That's when they started with all the CGI bullshit in the 2nd half of the film. I admit I did like the car chase a little but that's the last scene I enjoyed.
Now this 007 film I clearly remember despite only seeing it once at the cinemas. I remember loving the pre-credits sequence and the North Korean angle, plus M giving Bond up. Sadly it goes rapidly downhill from there and I remember the rest of Die Another Day for all the wrong reasons. Yikes, it was bad! The laughter in the cinema at that CGI kite surfing sequence will ring in my ears for many years to come.
I think this movie gets a lot more flak than it deserves. If it didnt have that ridiculous windsurfing scene and those pointless slow motion shots it would have been considered just a solid, over the top action thriller. The "Moonraker" of the Brosnan era if you will. The opening sequence was classic Bond. Seriously. Bond in disguise, the immediately likable but threatening villains, Bond getting in and out of a seemingly impossible situation, and a really inventive and fun chase sequence. It gets a bit carried away at the end (Im looking at you Robocop) but it is always a fun watch. Then again Im biased because this was one of the first Bonds Ive seen so nostalgia n stuff
Completely agree, This was the first bond film I saw at the cinema, I would have been 5 years old as well and I just loved all the gadgets in the film, plus it is a well paced film and it only really uses cgi when the film calls for an over the top campy sequence. Thus why the film's final act kinda sucked... alot... but also why I legitimately like the first act of the film.
I'll be honest....I agree, I really quite like this one, it's a bit of a guilty pleasure for me, and it's probably the first Bond I saw, or at least one of them. Personally I like it despite some of the sillier parts, I think the childhood nostalgia helps

I actually thoroughly enjoyed Die Another Day, its one of my favorites and its actually the first Bond film I ever saw and it really turned me on to the rest of the Bond films.
They were. Halle Berry and Michael Madsen were going to return AND they got Javier Bardem to play Jinx's lover. However MGM ended up balking at the potential budget. At least Bardem got another crack at Bond a few years later.

probably less a problem with Moore and more pointing out that Moore's run is the one with the silliest toys from Q branch. The hover gondola comes to mind, but even skipping Moonraker he had some whacky shit in his movies.
Last time I watched DAD, I spotted a reference to Diamonds Are Forever. When Bond is on the plane, reading the article on Graves, there is a quote at the bottom saying "Diamonds are forever, but life isn't. I'd like to make a mark with mine". The film is crammed with easter eggs, but i really liked how this one was slotted in
I agree with most of your complaints, but this movie has really grown on me. When I saw DAD in the theater I had mixed emotions, but now I love it. After watching all these Iron Man and Captain America movies for the past five years, I've come to realize that Bond movies are far superior to other action movies, even Bond movies directed by Lee Tamohori. That's just my opinion.

How's this for an unpopular opinion? Die Another Day is one of my favorite Bond movies! I've always been more partial to the high-concept, "campy" Bond movies than the more realistic ones. Die Another Day is a great celebration of that side of the franchise.

This was my first ever Bond movie. Craig is my favourite Bond. I actually prefer Die Another Day to The World is Not Enough. For Brosnan: Goldeneye > Die Another Day > The World is Not Enough > Tomorrow Never Dies.
Yes, Goldeneye and Die Another Day pretty much have the same plot James Bond doing espionage activity in Communist country such as USSR and North Korea. Both of the movies the villain would use a space satellite to destroy something
It's difficult to know where this film goes off the track. I like the introduction, his imprisonment and him having to work without MI6 for a while, as well as the fencing scene. Somewhere between the gene splicing clinic and the ice palace, however, things totally go off track. The car chase between the two gadget cars is good though. The less slow motion and CGI aren't so welcome either. Practical effects in my Bond films, please.

Die Another Day was the Batman and Robin of Bond films. I will say however, it started out really well. Bond gets captured by a foreign military power, is released in a cold war style trade off. Bond escapes MI6 and goes rogue (like in Licence to Kill), and operates without Q Branch, which made for an interesting story. Slowly over time things get outlandish, beginning with a watered down version of the Face/Off clinic, and finding out that Zao looks like rejected prequel era Star Wars villain (even dressing as one) and it goes tits up after the invisible car. Once that happens, it begins feeling like maybe Joel Schumacher took over. I have looked in the end credits for any evidence of him having been part of it.

Looking back on Die Another Day and the Aston Martin Vanquish, I've come to realize that it wasn't really a Bond Car as it was a Croft Car back in Lara Croft Tomb Raider (2001). Strange that Lara drove a future Bond Car complete with radio control keyring and she also encountered a future Bond as Daniel Craig is her romantic interest. 😊
I haven't watched the whole thing to be honest. I'm a regular on TGWTG and I'm a big fan of the Nostalgia Chick and Critic, Linkara, MikeJ and others but Film Brain's way of talking really gets on my nerves. His tendancy to draw out words at the end of a sentence is really annoooooyyyyyiiiiiinnnnngggg. I'm sure this is a common compliaint (and I'm sure people have more to complain about with me!) but yeah, I haven't managed to sit through the whole thing yet ;)
DAD would have greatly benefited from Thor: Ragnarok-style humour (or TSWLM, for a more Bondian reference). The contrast between the prolonged torture sequence and Bond's quest for revenge was tonally jarring (not to mention the lack of personal consequences for Bond, regarding the effects of said torture) when compared to the film's much more fantastical elements (invisible car, DNA transplants, power suit, wave-surfing, etc.), a tone which was kept throughout most of the movie.
A couple of thoughts...1) This is the first film in the the post 9/11 era. I do wonder if it would have been better received a couple years earlier...ok...probably not...2) Is there not a CZcamsr who has put the awful bluescreen wind surfing scene to "California Girls "?...

"Die Another Day" is the most disappointing Bond film I had ever seen. Since this film came out in 2002, we were thrilled to see the 40th Anniversary film which this one will be the next generation. However, much like every early 00's films that they want extreme or millennial stinker, it becomes so baffling. I can I say this? It's a complete failure, and boy this entire movie looks like a millennial version of Michael Bay and then it blends into a Vin Diesel's xXx. Of course this movie was going to destroy the franchise and it killed it with one bad scene where Bond was surfing in this god awful CG shit. The characters were crap, the actions were way too much force, and hell that fucking theme song is awful, it was done by Madonna (literally she's in this movie). That opening credits was terrible where Bond was tortured by these North Koreans, and it was uncomfortable, it was mean spirited, and why does Madonna lyrics was so awful that she says "Analyse This" like the Robert Di Nero. I can't help what to say about this one, and it's probably the weakest Bond film that fans can't recommend to see it. It was shame and very stupid. Of course "Moonraker" was crap, but it has a style that makes its own film, but this one it's a poorly CG mess.

Yeah my words exactly for Die Another day, I hope we never get another Bond film like that again. Quantum of Solace did avoid most of the cliches from the previous Bond films which I sort of liked but I still would prefer every Bond film opening with the gun barrel sequence. Without a doubt Quantum of Solace beats Die another day despite it being one of the average Bond movies.

DAD is a film of two halves - the first half was quite good however Halle Berry's character was cartoonish throughout ( there is a cartoonish feel about this film ) . The reviewer seems impressed by the absurd Q tech The second part is pure road runner with the infamous ice-berg scene & a climax at which point you just dont care.what is happening
TheJlook2000 considering the Q Tech, Calvin at a point does state “how is it we can accept a car that can become a submersible or a super magnet in a watch, but invisible cars THATS where people think it’s going silly?” I get what he’s saying and really we look back on MCU films and can accept an invisible helicarrier just fine..but I think I have a good counter argument: The fact is that the effect pulled off seems fake, what I mean is that the process of it going from Invisible to visible is shown as way too clear and glitchy, when really it should take a good while for the machinations to reveal it. Not to mention they don’t really explain HOW it can vanish, at least MCU explained its multi cameras mixed with light bending. Not to mention how DAMN easy it is for Bond to know WHERE it is. He should be bumping into it once or twice at least but he’s always RIGHT next to it with little problem! The car itself is damn cool...the execution leaves a lot to be desired.

This was my least favorite Bond film for a long time, but I just rewatched it and found myself really enjoying it. It's not a masterpiece by any means, but it was perfectly competent and fun. I feel like it represents, even better than the previous two, a modern Moore film. It's no longer at the bottom for me (now that goes to Diamonds Are Forever). I also think Gustav Graves is an underrated Bond Villain. A majority of Bond villains are old, white,, and serious European men and I like that he's young, arrogant, and hot-headed. It's a nice change in dynamic. When I rewatched this movie, I could totally believe that the character at the beginning was the same character as Toby Stevens. And this may seem trivial, but I liked seeing a Bond villain have a family member. In the same way you like seeing the formula mixed up as times (M kidnapped, Q in the field, etc.), I thought seeing a Bond Villain out for domination having to confront his father with what he was doing was a nice touch. The Brosnan era, minus Goldeneye, is admittedly my least favorite era, but I don't consider any of the main 24 entries outright bad movies and rank it about the same as Tomorrow Never Dies and The World is Not Enough: Nothing spectacular, but competent and OK.

Yes I agree with you. Die Another Day is not my favourite, but it’s good, silly, campy fun. I watched it a while ago after an intense day at school and was surprised by how much I enjoyed it. It’s got some terrible moments but it’s not unwatchable at all. Quite the opposite, in fact

Could have been alright if they stopped the emphasis on the action. The sword fight was just the start of the shark jump. If they had focused on character development and "the pursuit" and investigation part when he is in London this would have made the movie really strong. But the movie just keeps escalating after the sword fight. Outlandish stuff could have fit in. The Ice palace is actually a pretty cool addition... except they do absolutely nothing with it. The Ice palace should have been thoroughly explored. The jungle residence in Iceland is the same way. But it gets almost zero screentime in scenes which can actually build an atmosphere. Everything just zooms by. If its outlandish and they did a good job on set design, they should have emphasized the uniqueness of the ice palace, the fact the guy gets no sleep, and everything else. The problem isn't the outlandish stuff. It's just that they threw the shit in there and then made it almost irrelevant to the plot. There should have been like no emphasis on the dumb sun laser idea. The Icarus project should have been secondary to all this other stuff.
Die another Day grew on me by only the second rewatching; any other Bond fan must think I'm insane. I just think it has some good elements and even the title song is quite good in my opinion.

One thing that always bothers me about this film is that bloody ice palace. We see people walking around it in normal suits and low cut dresses etc. Aren’t they freezing!? How do the bedrooms work? I certainly wouldn’t want to sleep in a room made of ice and surely sex would generate a bit of heat and... melt the bed? And I doubt you’d really be able to touch anything as it’s be so cold and you’d probably stick to it and good luck picking your keys up of the table in the morning... Drax’s space station still makes more sense!
Watched DAD at the pictures, the pre credits are actually good, the hovercraft sequence is good and the initial plot of Bond s cover being blown and being caught, imprisoned and tortured took Bond into a situation he’d never been in before, he always escapes, not this time though and even the first third is ok as he does detective work after he gets out but then it falls off a cliff, the dialogue is poor, and it goes too nostalgic, making too many references to previous films for the sake of it and the invisible car, lasers and ice palaces were over the top and topped off with the kitesurfing with the worst special effects I’ve seen and all the slow motion moments were like the matrix, the car chase sequence is one good sequence, it was a shame this was Pierce Brosnan s last time as Bond, you can half see in this film that he wasn’t really enjoying the way it was going, he never really got the material in his 4 Bond films to develop the character and take it somewhere new, originally Brosnan tried to continue where Timothy Dalton left off and keep it relatively serious in Goldeneye which was his best Bond film but by DAD he had nothing to work with, the producers wanted him to do a 5th film but after DAD was received badly they decided to start afresh and Casino Royale rebooted the series 4 years later.

I'm sure that even when a particular bad bond movie comes on, it's still enjoyable to watch, especially Die Another Day. Not the best Bond movie, but had great fun action scenes like the car chase and the North Korea scene with the hovercrafts. That was fun to watch :D

I LOVE you Calvin. Other than being a dashing young lad props to calling Die Another Day a piece of shit. I mean, there have been bad Bond films or bad Bond moments before but at least they had some redeeming factors.....Die Another Day.....DOES NOT! Its a by the numbers rehash of the crap that made the older Bond films that made it cheesy. You'd think they learn after the third Austin Powers movie.
I love this film, sheer escapism. Even the credibility stretching ice tsunami. Going down together by David Arnold is one of the best Bond scores of all.

The Graves needed the Dream Machine to stay sane because the gene therapy removed his ability to sleep. It is used to emphasise the point of Graves being Moon. And the scene in which Colonel Moon kills General Moon isn't so bad. It isn't useless; it serves to finally establish Graves's villain status and plan. The relationship between Graves and General Moon is like the relationship between Orlov and Gogol.
My opinion on _Die Another Day_ was actually pretty high after I saw it for the first time, in theater. Having rewatched it since then, it's soured quite a bit. I think my initial reaction was influenced by how much I liked the pre-title and even title sequence: Bond failing and getting seriously tortured (and not in a "excuse to have the villain explain his/her master plan" kind of way) was long overdue, and I think the way it upends your expectations of the franchise actually goes really well with Madonna's theme song, which is just so _different_ from what we've come to expect that I can't help but love it. Sadly, though, it's all downhill from there. I honestly don't think it's terrible, and I still think it's a considerable improvement on most fronts from _The World is Not Enough_ (well, save for a distinct lack of Robbie Coltrane, at least), straddling the line between campiness and seriousness more effectively than the preceding film. But it doesn't hold a candle to either _Goldeneye_ or _Tomorrow Never Dies_ . And it's certainly difficult to see how the franchise could have continued along these lines: even when I first saw it, it felt weirdly dated, or at least out of touch with the rest of the movie industry circa 2002. It's not the absolute worst way the original continuity could have gone out, but it really was time for a fresh start with _Casino Royale_ .

Okay I'm not afraid to admit it. I love this movie. Apart from Jinx and some of the CGI. Don't take it too seriously and just go with the flow. It beats the shit out of Spectre.
the film's main problem is it tries too hard to give please all fans like those who like campy popcorn bond to those who like the hard edged bond that it comes across uneven but not due to lack of effort. i feel other films like man with the golden gun, quantum of solace, thunderball and in your eyes only fully failed due to lack of effort and ideas. die another is a 3 star film a time passer and one of the last practical action films before cgi films
You're a veteran of CZcams Bond fandom 🤵 I've watched your review of "Never say never again" today and what I bought away from it is they missed out on a golden chance to do everything that the Eon series wasn't. That was their biggest strength. Eon were producing a tired series that avoided dramatic gems like his advancing age and how the world of spying and entertainment had changed. All of these would be addressed between 87 and 95 with the next 2 Bonds. But too late IMHO. But how more dramatic it would've been if in NSNA Bond had been facing his age and mortality? In short, they could've reinvented Bond for the 80s as well as comment on the real life facts of age and a changing world making him, in the fictional and real world, look out of date? Playing it safe was a flaw of both Bond official or non official.

It's an artistic impression of death. The bullet going the wrong way down a gun barrel is an illogical impression badly thought through, hence it wasn't used thereafter.

360Effects To each his own, but I think this one was BY FAR the worst Bond movie. Its somehow even more dated that the earlier movies. QOS is definitely flawed, but to me DAD is flatout unwatchable.
The first 1/3 of the film had a good serious tone to it, however when the adaptive camouflage crap and ice palace came into it, it was like all thrown together in a typical slap happy CGI manner.

Eh, for me it falls apart the moment Bond walked into the hotel in Hong Kong. The tone immediately shifted into a Roger Moore-esque Bond film, and after how serious the film had been before that point it felt too jarring.

I watched this at the cinema and even then I thought it was terrible. Halle Berry was absolutely dreadful. Possibly the worst bond girl ever. And I didn't really like Toby Stephens as the villain. I wish they stuck with Colonel Moon's look at the start of the film which felt more threatening as a villain. Zao was a decent henchman and I admit I did like the car scene in Iceland.
Loved Rosamund Pike as Miranda. That was a decent role, but it felt underused unfortunately.
I thought everything in the film seemed fine until after the sword fight scene. That's when it started to go downhill with that ice palace idea, Icarus. Particularly Bond being chased by that beam and then the windsurfing scene. My fucking god what were they thinking? Things REALLY got out of hand during the final confrontation on the plane. Flying it through the Icarus beam felt so unrealistic. I doubt it would just be able to fly through something like that without exploding instantly. It's bullshit.
I actually like the ice palace. If they make an ice hotel, I don't mind them having an ice palace. I think an action scene in the real ice hotel in Switzerland in a new bond film would be awesome.
Tommy Carr The biggest problem of the film was Icarus. That's when they started with all the CGI bullshit in the 2nd half of the film. I admit I did like the car chase a little but that's the last scene I enjoyed.

Now this 007 film I clearly remember despite only seeing it once at the cinemas. I remember loving the pre-credits sequence and the North Korean angle, plus M giving Bond up.
Sadly it goes rapidly downhill from there and I remember the rest of Die Another Day for all the wrong reasons. Yikes, it was bad! The laughter in the cinema at that CGI kite surfing sequence will ring in my ears for many years to come.
Right it was over the top but at least far better than The world is not enough.

I think this movie gets a lot more flak than it deserves. If it didnt have that ridiculous windsurfing scene and those pointless slow motion shots it would have been considered just a solid, over the top action thriller. The "Moonraker" of the Brosnan era if you will.
The opening sequence was classic Bond. Seriously. Bond in disguise, the immediately likable but threatening villains, Bond getting in and out of a seemingly impossible situation, and a really inventive and fun chase sequence. It gets a bit carried away at the end (Im looking at you Robocop) but it is always a fun watch.
Then again Im biased because this was one of the first Bonds Ive seen so nostalgia n stuff
Completely agree, This was the first bond film I saw at the cinema, I would have been 5 years old as well and I just loved all the gadgets in the film, plus it is a well paced film and it only really uses cgi when the film calls for an over the top campy sequence. Thus why the film's final act kinda sucked... alot... but also why I legitimately like the first act of the film.
I'll be honest....I agree, I really quite like this one, it's a bit of a guilty pleasure for me, and it's probably the first Bond I saw, or at least one of them. Personally I like it despite some of the sillier parts, I think the childhood nostalgia helps

Last time I watched DAD, I spotted a reference to Diamonds Are Forever. When Bond is on the plane, reading the article on Graves, there is a quote at the bottom saying "Diamonds are forever, but life isn't. I'd like to make a mark with mine". The film is crammed with easter eggs, but i really liked how this one was slotted in
I agree with most of your complaints, but this movie has really grown on me. When I saw DAD in the theater I had mixed emotions, but now I love it. After watching all these Iron Man and Captain America movies for the past five years, I've come to realize that Bond movies are far superior to other action movies, even Bond movies directed by Lee Tamohori. That's just my opinion.

How's this for an unpopular opinion? Die Another Day is one of my favorite Bond movies! I've always been more partial to the high-concept, "campy" Bond movies than the more realistic ones. Die Another Day is a great celebration of that side of the franchise.

It's difficult to know where this film goes off the track. I like the introduction, his imprisonment and him having to work without MI6 for a while, as well as the fencing scene. Somewhere between the gene splicing clinic and the ice palace, however, things totally go off track. The car chase between the two gadget cars is good though.
The less slow motion and CGI aren't so welcome either. Practical effects in my Bond films, please.

Die Another Day was the Batman and Robin of Bond films. I will say however, it started out really well. Bond gets captured by a foreign military power, is released in a cold war style trade off. Bond escapes MI6 and goes rogue (like in Licence to Kill), and operates without Q Branch, which made for an interesting story. Slowly over time things get outlandish, beginning with a watered down version of the Face/Off clinic, and finding out that Zao looks like rejected prequel era Star Wars villain (even dressing as one) and it goes tits up after the invisible car. Once that happens, it begins feeling like maybe Joel Schumacher took over. I have looked in the end credits for any evidence of him having been part of it.
That with batman and robin was the exact same thing i thought when i watched this movie.
Still better than Attack of the Clones though! (But that's not hard to do)

Looking back on Die Another Day and the Aston Martin Vanquish, I've come to realize that it wasn't really a Bond Car as it was a Croft Car back in Lara Croft Tomb Raider (2001).
Strange that Lara drove a future Bond Car complete with radio control keyring and she also encountered a future Bond as Daniel Craig is her romantic interest. 😊
I haven't watched the whole thing to be honest. I'm a regular on TGWTG and I'm a big fan of the Nostalgia Chick and Critic, Linkara, MikeJ and others but Film Brain's way of talking really gets on my nerves. His tendancy to draw out words at the end of a sentence is really annoooooyyyyyiiiiiinnnnngggg. I'm sure this is a common compliaint (and I'm sure people have more to complain about with me!) but yeah, I haven't managed to sit through the whole thing yet ;)

DAD would have greatly benefited from Thor: Ragnarok-style humour (or TSWLM, for a more Bondian reference). The contrast between the prolonged torture sequence and Bond's quest for revenge was tonally jarring (not to mention the lack of personal consequences for Bond, regarding the effects of said torture) when compared to the film's much more fantastical elements (invisible car, DNA transplants, power suit, wave-surfing, etc.), a tone which was kept throughout most of the movie.
A couple of thoughts...1) This is the first film in the the post 9/11 era. I do wonder if it would have been better received a couple years earlier...ok...probably not...2) Is there not a CZcamsr who has put the awful bluescreen wind surfing scene to "California Girls "?...

"Die Another Day" is the most disappointing Bond film I had ever seen. Since this film came out in 2002, we were thrilled to see the 40th Anniversary film which this one will be the next generation. However, much like every early 00's films that they want extreme or millennial stinker, it becomes so baffling. I can I say this? It's a complete failure, and boy this entire movie looks like a millennial version of Michael Bay and then it blends into a Vin Diesel's xXx. Of course this movie was going to destroy the franchise and it killed it with one bad scene where Bond was surfing in this god awful CG shit. The characters were crap, the actions were way too much force, and hell that fucking theme song is awful, it was done by Madonna (literally she's in this movie). That opening credits was terrible where Bond was tortured by these North Koreans, and it was uncomfortable, it was mean spirited, and why does Madonna lyrics was so awful that she says "Analyse This" like the Robert Di Nero. I can't help what to say about this one, and it's probably the weakest Bond film that fans can't recommend to see it. It was shame and very stupid. Of course "Moonraker" was crap, but it has a style that makes its own film, but this one it's a poorly CG mess.

Quantum of Solace did avoid most of the cliches from the previous Bond films which I sort of liked but I still would prefer every Bond film opening with the gun barrel sequence. Without a doubt Quantum of Solace beats Die another day despite it being one of the average Bond movies.

DAD is a film of two halves - the first half was quite good however Halle Berry's character was cartoonish throughout ( there is a cartoonish feel about this film ) . The reviewer seems impressed by the absurd Q tech The second part is pure road runner with the infamous ice-berg scene & a climax at which point you just dont care.what is happening

I get what he’s saying and really we look back on MCU films and can accept an invisible helicarrier just fine..but I think I have a good counter argument:
The fact is that the effect pulled off seems fake, what I mean is that the process of it going from Invisible to visible is shown as way too clear and glitchy, when really it should take a good while for the machinations to reveal it.
Not to mention they don’t really explain HOW it can vanish, at least MCU explained its multi cameras mixed with light bending. Not to mention how DAMN easy it is for Bond to know WHERE it is. He should be bumping into it once or twice at least but he’s always RIGHT next to it with little problem!
The car itself is damn cool...the execution leaves a lot to be desired.

How does blood run into a gunbarrel?
This was my least favorite Bond film for a long time, but I just rewatched it and found myself really enjoying it. It's not a masterpiece by any means, but it was perfectly competent and fun. I feel like it represents, even better than the previous two, a modern Moore film. It's no longer at the bottom for me (now that goes to Diamonds Are Forever).
I also think Gustav Graves is an underrated Bond Villain. A majority of Bond villains are old, white,, and serious European men and I like that he's young, arrogant, and hot-headed. It's a nice change in dynamic. When I rewatched this movie, I could totally believe that the character at the beginning was the same character as Toby Stevens. And this may seem trivial, but I liked seeing a Bond villain have a family member. In the same way you like seeing the formula mixed up as times (M kidnapped, Q in the field, etc.), I thought seeing a Bond Villain out for domination having to confront his father with what he was doing was a nice touch.
The Brosnan era, minus Goldeneye, is admittedly my least favorite era, but I don't consider any of the main 24 entries outright bad movies and rank it about the same as Tomorrow Never Dies and The World is Not Enough: Nothing spectacular, but competent and OK.

Yes I agree with you. Die Another Day is not my favourite, but it’s good, silly, campy fun. I watched it a while ago after an intense day at school and was surprised by how much I enjoyed it. It’s got some terrible moments but it’s not unwatchable at all. Quite the opposite, in fact

Could have been alright if they stopped the emphasis on the action. The sword fight was just the start of the shark jump. If they had focused on character development and "the pursuit" and investigation part when he is in London this would have made the movie really strong. But the movie just keeps escalating after the sword fight. Outlandish stuff could have fit in. The Ice palace is actually a pretty cool addition... except they do absolutely nothing with it. The Ice palace should have been thoroughly explored. The jungle residence in Iceland is the same way. But it gets almost zero screentime in scenes which can actually build an atmosphere. Everything just zooms by. If its outlandish and they did a good job on set design, they should have emphasized the uniqueness of the ice palace, the fact the guy gets no sleep, and everything else.
The problem isn't the outlandish stuff. It's just that they threw the shit in there and then made it almost irrelevant to the plot. There should have been like no emphasis on the dumb sun laser idea. The Icarus project should have been secondary to all this other stuff.

One thing that always bothers me about this film is that bloody ice palace. We see people walking around it in normal suits and low cut dresses etc. Aren’t they freezing!? How do the bedrooms work? I certainly wouldn’t want to sleep in a room made of ice and surely sex would generate a bit of heat and... melt the bed? And I doubt you’d really be able to touch anything as it’s be so cold and you’d probably stick to it and good luck picking your keys up of the table in the morning...
Drax’s space station still makes more sense!
Watched DAD at the pictures, the pre credits are actually good, the hovercraft sequence is good and the initial plot of Bond s cover being blown and being caught, imprisoned and tortured took Bond into a situation he’d never been in before, he always escapes, not this time though and even the first third is ok as he does detective work after he gets out but then it falls off a cliff, the dialogue is poor, and it goes too nostalgic, making too many references to previous films for the sake of it and the invisible car, lasers and ice palaces were over the top and topped off with the kitesurfing with the worst special effects I’ve seen and all the slow motion moments were like the matrix, the car chase sequence is one good sequence, it was a shame this was Pierce Brosnan s last time as Bond, you can half see in this film that he wasn’t really enjoying the way it was going, he never really got the material in his 4 Bond films to develop the character and take it somewhere new, originally Brosnan tried to continue where Timothy Dalton left off and keep it relatively serious in Goldeneye which was his best Bond film but by DAD he had nothing to work with, the producers wanted him to do a 5th film but after DAD was received badly they decided to start afresh and Casino Royale rebooted the series 4 years later.
I feel Lee Tamahori who directed Die Another Day should direct BOND 26. I want the reboot to bring back the over-the-top escapism, emphasis for gadgets and tongue-in-cheek humour in BOND 26 which were missing in the realistic, Dark and Gritty Jason Bourne style Daniel Craig movies

I feel Lee Tamahori who directed Die Another Day should direct BOND 26. I want the James Bond franchise to bring back the over-the-top escapism, emphasis for gadgets and tongue-in-cheek humour. The Daniel Craig era movies resembled Jason Bourne it was Dark and Gritty without emphasis for Gadgets and portrayed him as a vulnerable character

I'm sure that even when a particular bad bond movie comes on, it's still enjoyable to watch, especially Die Another Day. Not the best Bond movie, but had great fun action scenes like the car chase and the North Korea scene with the hovercrafts. That was fun to watch :D

This film was awesome. The sword fight scene alone is one of the longest and best sword fight scenes ever put on film.

I LOVE you Calvin. Other than being a dashing young lad props to calling Die Another Day a piece of shit. I mean, there have been bad Bond films or bad Bond moments before but at least they had some redeeming factors.....Die Another Day.....DOES NOT! Its a by the numbers rehash of the crap that made the older Bond films that made it cheesy. You'd think they learn after the third Austin Powers movie.
I love this film, sheer escapism. Even the credibility stretching ice tsunami. Going down together by David Arnold is one of the best Bond scores of all.
This is the best of the Brosnan films. Everything is working well together. All the chemistry was right. He should have made one more after this.

The Graves needed the Dream Machine to stay sane because the gene therapy removed his ability to sleep. It is used to emphasise the point of Graves being Moon. And the scene in which Colonel Moon kills General Moon isn't so bad. It isn't useless; it serves to finally establish Graves's villain status and plan. The relationship between Graves and General Moon is like the relationship between Orlov and Gogol.
My opinion on _Die Another Day_ was actually pretty high after I saw it for the first time, in theater. Having rewatched it since then, it's soured quite a bit. I think my initial reaction was influenced by how much I liked the pre-title and even title sequence: Bond failing and getting seriously tortured (and not in a "excuse to have the villain explain his/her master plan" kind of way) was long overdue, and I think the way it upends your expectations of the franchise actually goes really well with Madonna's theme song, which is just so _different_ from what we've come to expect that I can't help but love it.
Sadly, though, it's all downhill from there. I honestly don't think it's terrible, and I still think it's a considerable improvement on most fronts from _The World is Not Enough_ (well, save for a distinct lack of Robbie Coltrane, at least), straddling the line between campiness and seriousness more effectively than the preceding film. But it doesn't hold a candle to either _Goldeneye_ or _Tomorrow Never Dies_ . And it's certainly difficult to see how the franchise could have continued along these lines: even when I first saw it, it felt weirdly dated, or at least out of touch with the rest of the movie industry circa 2002. It's not the absolute worst way the original continuity could have gone out, but it really was time for a fresh start with _Casino Royale_ .
Whilst admitting it has its flaws, I enjoy Die Another Day every time I watch it.

Okay I'm not afraid to admit it. I love this movie. Apart from Jinx and some of the CGI. Don't take it too seriously and just go with the flow. It beats the shit out of Spectre.
the film's main problem is it tries too hard to give please all fans like those who like campy popcorn bond to those who like the hard edged bond that it comes across uneven but not due to lack of effort. i feel other films like man with the golden gun, quantum of solace, thunderball and in your eyes only fully failed due to lack of effort and ideas. die another is a 3 star film a time passer and one of the last practical action films before cgi films
Toby Stephens would make a good bond I think. After all, he did play him in the Radio 4 Novel dramatisation

I've watched your review of "Never say never again" today and what I bought away from it is they missed out on a golden chance to do everything that the Eon series wasn't.
That was their biggest strength. Eon were producing a tired series that avoided dramatic gems like his advancing age and how the world of spying and entertainment had changed.
All of these would be addressed between 87 and 95 with the next 2 Bonds. But too late IMHO.
But how more dramatic it would've been if in NSNA Bond had been facing his age and mortality?
In short, they could've reinvented Bond for the 80s as well as comment on the real life facts of age and a changing world making him, in the fictional and real world, look out of date?
Playing it safe was a flaw of both Bond official or non official.
