I would like to see a 10 yo watercolor tattoo so I can see how they look. Fresh ones are really pretty.
I'm guessing you may have to wait several more years before there are any ten-year-old watercolour tattoos because it's quite a new trend.
Mines almost 4 years and looks as good as the day it was done! 😊
I assume that like anything, if you take really good care of your items or tattoos or whatever, they'll look good way down the line.
probably. I don't want my tattoo to look like trash so I put lotion on it often (at least once a week) and I carry an spf 60 sunscreen stick in my purse so if I find myself out in the sun unexpectedly I can apply sunscreen to my tattoo
I got my watercolor tattoo back in 2010, so about 8 years ago. The key is wearing high SPF sunscreen Every. Day. Even a small burn can make it lose definition.

That rose is absolutely stunning and beautiful, it looks so much like an actual watercolor on the skin.
Would love to hear your take on fineline tattooing! It seems to have exploded in popularity and some tattoos are super beautiful but what's their longevity like? Do the fine lines fall out or bleed together over time? Another great vid, thanks James! 👊

Thanks for this. The tattoo I have in my head does have elements of soft pastel or watercolor elements. These tips could help me figure out how thick the black lines should be, as well as which artists to rule out if they don't do these saving methods.
Very informative, watercolor tattoos are something I've been curious about for a while now. Longevity really was the main concern for me when considering one. Very helpful.

I have a beautiful water color tattoo on my forearm that is a memorial piece for my cat, Aspen. I’ve had it for about a year. After watching this I have such love & respect for my tattoo artist & her technique.
Luckily for me and thanks to her method, I think my tattoo will last. :)
Very informative video! I dont currently have any tattoos and to be honest wasnt super interested in getting any until I found out about watercolor tattoos. I think they're beautiful, I absolutely love floral watercolor paintings and I love how that style and subject translates to tattooing! I hope I can get one someday

He should also discuss why tattoo artist have an aversion to using brown/dark skinned models in their portfolio.
Tattoos on dark skin don't show up as good so it's not a good way of showcasing your art. Colors won't be as bright and thinner lines/shading (grey and black tattoos) might blend in with the skin more and become lost. Harder to see colored sharpie on brown paper than white paper. The melanin in the skin hides the ink more. Lots of reasons. Tattoos just look better the lighter the skin in a lot of cases. Not talking down on people with dark skin getting tattoos, I think they look good on everyone, just sharing some reasons of why someone might not want to use them in their book.
will k is right. in addition to what he's saying, it's much harder to photograph tattoos that are on darker skin because there is more glare in the photo. this is especially true if the tattoo is fresh. in a bodybuilding competition that glare is beneficial, in tattoo photos it isn't. i can't tell you how many times i've done a tattoo i'm proud of on darker skin and couldn't get a good photo to save my life. this is unfortunate for dark skinned clients because often times they have to ask or play the guessing game on whether or not an artist is experienced with that skin type and therefore fit for the project. i'll make a whole video about tattoos on dark skin eventually. and i'll lay the information out there in an honest way so that ppl with that skin type can finally have some real information and be better equipped to make good tattoo decisions
Can't wait to see this video James :). That is what frustrates me about finding a great tattoo artists. I NEVER see people like me in their portfolios.
Personally, I understand the reasons why and am not particularly offended by artists who don't show off the tattoos they have done on dark skin. My only gripe is that it gives the impression that those artists either a, somehow have never tattooed someone with dark skin before; b, don't have the know-how to tattoo dark skin; or worst of all c, just plainly don't want to tattoo dark skin. All of those reasons are deal breakers.

Hi! A viewer from France here! I'll be getting my first tattoo this week, and it'll be a watercolor tattoo (minimalist cat outline with watercolor splashes). I was feeling a bit stressed about it, even though my tattoo artist explained pretty well what was going to happen. I found your videos, and watched quite a few of them, and now I feel like I know a lot more. Nice video and I happen to be looking into a water color tattoo of a sunset I drew with colored pencils. I'll definitely talk to my artist about what's gonna work best to make this come to life on me and look great.

First off love watching your video’s. I have 2water color tattoos. One rather large set of wings on my back and the other smaller on my shoulder. They are both different with the wings being very colorful but my tattoo artist saturated the colors really well and the other has the colors lighter. Love them both as both unique. I am also very pale so color stands out on me very well. Even white and yellow come up really well. Would love to get a tattoo done by you but live is SA

Your friend Matt's watercolor technique is exactly what I want. I am absolutely terrified to get any watercolor done though because none of the tattoo artists around me seem to have much, if any, experience with it. Seems kinda pointless to travel far for something small and is ultimately keeping me from getting the tattoo I want. 😕
Same here, I live in a small town in Norway and I can't find anyone around me that does watercolor (or even brightly colored tattoos for that matter). I wouldn't mind traveling a few hours for a watercolor tattoo though. I think the only place I could get a watercolor tattoo would be in the capital, which is 8 hours away from me :/

Another great video! So I looked up Lianne Moule, and WOW. You weren't exaggerating. Her work is incredible! She's in Essex though, lol. Also, I watched her video, and her last name is pronounced like "mole".
I like the simple splashy watercolor tattoos, but I'm really blown away by the ones that look like actual watercolor paintings. The thing I worry about is the longevity though. Most artists/collectors that I've talked to/seen, believe that over the years the colors will just blur together without black lines to define them. It makes me very hesitant to get one in that style, as gorgeous as it may be for the first few years or so.

How come that the ink stays (almost) still under the skinn and dont flow around? Question two that i can of course google but i like your opinion. How come that the body accepts the ink and doesnt want to get rid of it?
I have a water color tattoo with some splash marks but mainly the colors are concentrated in the center area of the piece which takes up most of my upper arm,and I was wondering in your opinion if I wanted to add on,would it look awkward if I added on and it wasn't water color pieces?or do you have suggestions? because for the remainder of the tattoos I plan to get,I just want black ink and no more colors. Thanks!

What are your thoughts on going to a tattoo artist that doesn’t speak your language? I have fallen in love with the work of certain Spanish speaking and Russian speaking artists. Should I try reaching out to them? Or would you suggest sticking with artists that speak English?
You should stick to english, unless you could get a translator or google translator idk

Loved the video! But I hve to disagree on the large scale thing: I only have large scale watercolor tattoos - fullsleeve, full back and a few big pieces on my legs. And my artists mostly do huge pieces in this style - and all of them look great and patch together very well 😄
Loved this video, and loved that you didn't shit all over watercolor tattoos. I also loved that you had images added in to show what you are referencing, it was super helpful. You mentioned large scale watercolor, check out findyoursmile on IG. He has several half sleeve watercolor tattoos.

When is comes to geometric/mandala tattoos, how do those tend to age? Do they become less legible or do they age well?
Wouldn't it have a lot to do with how fine the lines are; And how intricate/closely condensed the design is laid out. In those cases, I think they wouldn't age too well.
it does depend on the specific design and how close the lines are to eachother, as gilberto said. if the tattoo isn't too busy though, mandalas can age very well. they have a geometrically rigid shape which makes them very legible . it all on a case by case basis
@@gilbertoflores7397 fine lines age better. My first tattoo looks new. It has fine lines and is 30 yrs old.

Hey James I was just curious what needle set up you use for the watercolor, aside from the black lining. I was concerned about using RS because I don't want to traumatize the skin from too many passes and at the same time I also want to be able to vivid detail and smooth transitions in small spaces with decent saturation. Thanks man the videos are great!
i use mostly mags on everything. i only bust out round shaders for things that have a lot of tight spaces that would be annoying to work around with mags. i use a bunch of sizes but my most common ones are 11 curved bugpins, 9 curved bugpins, and 17 curved bugpins. the larger the mag, the easier it seems to be to get things to look smooth and soft. a large mag will distrubute the pressure across a larger area and that helps to reduce overworking and scratchiness for me

no problem. you really just gotta try out a bunch of different groupings and see what works best for you. there are so many effective ways to accomplish a certain task in tattooing. i know guys that use almost all round shaders and do fantastic work. some guys do black and grey tattoos exclusively with a 3 liner and just whip shade the whole thing. you just gotta find what makes sense for you personally

My first tattoo was a watercolour tiger.
I saw the video where you explained how if you get a tattoo at a young age your skin spreads unevenly and the tattoo will not look the same as when u first got it. Is there a fix for that ? Cover up? Or touch ups before that happens ?
No, not much younger. You'd be surprised how common growth spurts at 18 years of age is.
you could cover it, remove it, or add onto it. the last one is the only option that i think is favorable. but the tattoo has to be good quality so that it doesn't stick out like a sore thumb when you add onto it to disguise it's shift in position, if that happens

EMTs ignore them, they are trained to look for the bracelets and necklaces. Not tattoos.
collin johnson as said below its rolling the dice if the emt will look for it. However if you are okay carrying id in your wallet or bracelet and having the tattoo in addition it’s perfectly reasonable. So you will still have to commit to carrying around some form of medical id.
Main reason I want to get one is because with my career field I can’t really wear jewelry which makes it hard for me to have anything on me. I know it’s not perfect but it’s better than nothing and kinda my main reason
collin johnson I don’t know why you can’t wear jewelry and since this is the internet I would never doubt your reasons, but I’m a type 1 diabetic and I really need to wear medical identification. If your reason is life or death look at some simple jewelry that easily hidden or flat. Good luck and if you get the tattoo I’d love to hear how it looks! Also some tips I have heard are simply to make it visible and put it where an EMT would look. Chronic potentially dangerous stuff sucks I hope you find something that works for you!
