  • Please join me Billy and Thor as we journey out to an island off of the coast of Maine to investigate a rock that has many Indian petroglyphs inscribed on it. In this video, we explain how this rock was discovered by one of Billy friends some decades ago and I show to the best of my ability the pietroglyphs on the rock. One in particular that is most interesting is a depiction of a square masted sailing ship with high upturned bow and stern, PLUS a rows of oars!

@13:12 looks like a variation of the Web of Wyrd (Norse symbol representing interconnectivity of the universe and fate) @13:36 looks like a Kolovrat symbol in the middle of a spiral (or single triskele) and @13:40 looks very much like a Sun Cross. The rest of the engravings look like they could be telling a story using a pictographic style, and some of the other linear engravings look like they could be runic combinations which also might give some context to the creator(s). Someone mentioned that there was a coin found that could be related to king Olaf Kyrre of 11th century Norway, and that's kind of coincidental since some of the possible runic writing seems to represent the sounds "Eh," "Laf," "Ka," and "Yr" which would roughly translate to Olaf Kyrre.

Armchair Historian/Anthropologist here (still a significant amount of college). Those are very interesting, and it wouldn't be out of the realm of possibility for it to be Norse. Vikings first came to (what is now) the Province of Newfoundland and called it "Vinland". Newfoundland is just North of Maine and there may have been trade with Natives, or a Viking with a hole in his pocket, as the "Goddard Coin", the only pre-Columbus artifact from the Norse in America, was actually found in Maine. As for the carvings their selves, well, the location is certainly on point, and Vikings weren't strangers to graffiti (I'm talking to you, Halfdan), also note how close to the water the carvings are. Possible port area? I'd have to check out the coast to be more sure on that one, but it certainly seems plausible. The carvings themselves for sure look Viking, the shield, the "longship" etc. Very basic but certainly reminiscent. I can't really see the figure with the "head-dress", but look out for "viking horn helmet", that was never a thing back then, and was popularized with the Operas of Richard Wagner. Some of those marking look like Runes (elder Futhark? That looks like a "Dagas", maybe "Gebo" rune, overlapping in a "binding" pattern). I'd love to check out that location. You should break out the detector around there. I know I would.
    Again, this is all speculative.

4:02 That is 100% a viking longboat. The image looks to me like someone had a good look at a longboat and carved it in that rock. I do not believe it's from some native scout, but it's more likely that a actual ship was there in peace and a native American drawn that. Vikings and the Native Americans did trade with each other in other parts of the country, so I see no reason why that didn't happen in this location. Also for Maine it would be rather likely that the Vikings did in fact visit the shores as they did manage to go as far south as North Carolina at least. Probably further.
4:27 Look closer, it looks a skull in that spiral, dead center. I can see a lot more shapes you missed. I would need to see this in person to really document it all.
4:34 That looks like a viking shield almost.
I think I noticed a few runic signs from the runic alfabet, but with the camera wiggling around so much and not really giving a clear image I can't really say whether it is the case or not. Or for that matter if they are what they may be saying.
Beau, I want you to contact me on here and give me all pictures you have. I will try to figure it out as I think these are at least 3 people carving things in that rock and not all are Native American from what I can tell. I have a feeling this was a trading hub of some kind or used to contact the locals. Which it seems trying to communicate by using that rock. I would very strongly advice to get in the specialists as this is a confirmed site for Viking activity with locals. This spot MUST be protected right away and they MUST take this VERY seriously. I am 1 million procent sure this is a extremely important site. DO NOT TOUGH ANYTHING THERE! Leave it for the pro's and their efforts.
For dating things, well that could proof more difficult. Around 985 AD Greenland was occupied by the Vikings, so it should be after that at least. Although there are earlier dates mentioned going a 100 years from that point. The viking era would be up to 1104 at least, so between those dates at least you could have this meeting near this rock.It could be later as the vikings were at least doing trips to the America's up to 1250 when it started to go real bad for even Iceland (mini ice age causing ships to get stuck more often causing the supply ships to get stuck pretty much)
13:08 Just right of the mast, that looks like a figure standing there. head torso and left arm visible. If you look closely on the sail, you can actually see runes! This ship must have had some form of runic text on it's sails which was obviously rather uncommon. I can't really make out what it says, I tried a few things to see if I could get it more cleared but it still doesn't really make sense so far. I can tell there is at least 1 line with runes, perhaps 2 or 3. But again, can't really see it correctly.
The 'fish' is most likely a whale, it seems to have a similar mouth like one.
13:56 Front that photo I think we can clearly see that there was no longboat being dragged up there any time soon. no reason to get up a high bank like that and it's too shallow there. It could however be possible that they had a smaller row boat like thing with them. I however would doubt it unless they would be camped not too far away.

There also is Anse Du Meadows and another Norse site on Canada's east coast, not to mention other sites inland in Manitoba. They had sailed down from Hudson's Bay through our river systems/lakes and likely eventually ended up in Minnesota.

You need low-light-angle-photography for those carvings. If you carry a filming light shade the area with a tarp from sunlight (get two people to hold it up) then use your light at a very low angle from the side. Sweep the light around from different directions and take loads of shots. Don;t just use one angle, you may need to build up a composite photo (so use a tripod to make sure the camera doesn't move,
Use powerful light and use it form a few feet to make sure that one side of the shot isn't way too bright compared to the other (inverse square law, light falloff etc etc)
Or use sinrise/sunset (though that's only two angles of course, but it dones;t need lights or a tarp

Definitely carved by Indigenous people, and very well could depict vikings. Would be cool to get a local expert to check it out.

Just went and looked at it myself. There are more carvings if you look very closely. I found a 4 inch spearhead at the bottom of the bank just below the stone. It looks very old. The tip is broken off and it is a grey white color. It looks like a very good place for a camp. Very protected from the wind but easy access to open ocean. Not sure how the bricks got there but they look pretty old. If you look at the area to the left of the rock coming up from the beach it looks like it might have been filled in at one time with smaller rocks. Thats where i found the spearhead. I didn't do any digging. It was on top of the ground. It looked like someone uncovered more of the dirt off the top of the rock looking for more carvings. Not sure what they used but they put some scratches on the rock.

That really needs to be looked at by experts, they can scan the rock and see every detail, if that is a Viking ship, add that to the Maine penny found in 1957 (Also known as the Goddard coin, the coin is believed to be a Norwegian silver penny dating to the reign of 11th century King of Norway Olaf Kyrre( you may lose holiday as Columbus day goes out of the window! Even though it has been well proven the Vikings were there first.

The "experts" will just deny it as a fake. Just like all the other PROOF that white people were here WAY before columbus ever made it to SOUTH america! Kensington stone just one example. HIS story is completely fabricated that's why it's called history. Anyone who really loves history and can think for themselves will tell you the same damn thing! That's the problem, nobody wants to spend the time researching. They'd just rather let someone tell them so they can go around calling everyone else stupid if they believe something different...

    • @neutrongarbage
      @neutrongarbage Před 4 lety +1

Interesting you bring that up, as some of the possible runic writing on this stone looks like they could represent "Eh," "Laf," "Ka," and "Yr," which would roughly translate to Olaf Kyrre.

Only thing that seems odd about his story is that the surface of the bedrock was clean enough from dirt, debris, etc, for him to make out the carvings -- right after a massive tree had just been ripped from the surface. Perhaps given enough rain/wind after the tree had fallen it might have eroded away, but still seems an unlikely scenario -- though doesn't mean it couldn't have happened exactly as he told! Definitely worth having an expert look into it.

As already pointed out the ship bears some resemblance to a viking longboat, but difficult to say for sure. The cross shaped symbol with a ring around it looks very much like a Norse sun sign. I'd say it's very plausible that the vikings actually reached Maine, Newfoundland and the other areas in the vicinity. The evidence is out there, it just needs to be found. It would be amazing if these carvings could be examined by experts in the field. Thanks for sharing the video!

I googled Viking shields. To me, that one etched circle with a slender cross in it resembled several images of Viking shield patterns.
I would tell your buddy to put dirt on the areas and wash water over it to leave mud in the etching channels and make it more visible, and then photograph the whole thing.
Select several museums in Denmark Sweden and Norway and ask them if the impressions say anything to them.
Over here you should contact anthropologists who focus on native Americans and explain the situation and let them know the county in Maine so thetly have an idea of what native American nation was prominant in that area.
My impression is, the etching would have taken time and I don't think they would have been worried considering how close they were to the water and carving. It could be there was some form of communication, so I'll guess trade involving food. Its good you are keeping this on the down low, but take better images with contrast but don't show the water just the rock. You may even want to temporarily make this video un seeable but the time stamp on the post is like your copyright.
