- We are all good people, in some way. Einar Øverenget will talk about why it’s impossible to do the right thing all the time, but what exactly makes us to do the bad things?
His aim is to make philosophy accessible and relevant for people of different training and careers, and also for people in their private lives - and the objective is to stimulate thinking.
This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at www.ted.com/tedx
1. Denial of responsibility
2. Denial of harming the universe
3. Denial of victim hood
4. “I deserve it for all the good I do”
5. “I had no choice”
6. Justification by comparison - people have done worse
7. Postponement - choosing to reflect later
Keep doing this. Thank you

Trauma/PTSD/C-PTSD is very often why genuinely good people do bad things, that are against their own personal values. Especially if the behavior becomes habitual. Fear/survival mode state living. Modalities to resolve and heal the underlying, often subconscious, trauma is what's needed for change of behavior.
Yes, that is true. I would know.
I have so many regrets
What do you mean tho?
Never regret bro
Empty me too 😞😞😞😞
Empty Same my dude.
So many people that got an assignment connected to this video and here I am: watching because I like ted + I’m wondering if I’m a bad person :)

Good people can become bad because of people constantly being either bullied/beaten which is understandable
just for reference, Joker 2019
🙋🏽♂️🙋🏽♂️🙋🏽♂️ (only a little bad though)
This is an understatement.
I'm reminded of my favorite quote -
A moment of carelessness, a lifetime of regret.
A lifetime of carelessness, a moment of regret.
What's that moment of regret?
@@Izzy-cr8zx maybe when you're time is up and reflect and have a moment of regret
@@Purpleleahp Possibly
@@Izzy-cr8zx Maybe it’s that “oops” feeling we get when getting out of a car and accidentally swing the door open too far and it hits the next car.
would you share where you found this quote?

I once dressed up as a girl in Minecraft and successfully seduced a man. We lived a good life for the time being, everything was going good and I even placed my Minecraft bed right next to his. We then got married virtually and even adopted a wolf in the process. Despite all the good that has happened, I just had to tell him the truth and I eventually did; I told him I was a man. He was so shocked because I could tell by his emotionless Minecraft skin. After a few seconds of the confrontation, he just left. He left me and my virtually pregnant child that I had with another man. I get where he is going, child support is tough and I was hoping the news of me being pregnant would make him happy now that he is father to his nonblood related child.
Despite all that has happened, I still loved him virtually.
Oof, can relate
Damn that's deep
Damn it really be like that sometimes
I just witnessed the birth of a meme
Norwegians are so much of good people that for them finding money on the streets and keeping it is "wrong"... what a magnificent culture!!
It's cause weed
This is eye-opening and helpful for my future. I found 300 euro outside a bookies and I had this very dialogue with myself! I gave a third of the money to women's aid an underfunded charity in my country and kept the rest {blush} but I can never forget that I didn't give it ALL to the gardai. I will be able to say to myself ''ah gwan outta that, stop justifying'' the next time this type of dissonance resolution dialogue kicks in.
I don’t know why your voice is so soothing

Am I the only one who caught the intensity in the end when he must of forgot his direction and partially dissociated but still managed to keep it together? Lol or
I do bad things but I try to justify it by doing good things to feel like I earned it. I've found money on the ground. I've binge eaten. Stuff like that.
I have done something terrible for years, but I desperately want to be a good person now
You can be !!!
Find someone safe (probably a professional) to whom you can talk about this if you can't open up about it to the (unknowing) affected yet because you need healing first yourself or if it wouldn't help out anyone affected (yourself or the others) if you opened up about it anyway. Also find someone trustworthy and safe to speak about it and confide further in if you already opened up to and apologized to those directly affected but they couldn't (yet) forgive you and for their own reasons weren't able to listen to your story and why you did what you did and therefor didn't give you space to talk about that aswell either... or if you yourself couldn't be your own advocate yet in that sense.
Basically people don't have to forgive you but you are always allowed to ask for forgiveness and over time (start to) forgive yourself once you've set right what you could do to set things right and come clean where you could. After you've done this you can still feel bad for having caused hurt without beating yourself up over it as a person. We all do bad things sometimes and some mess up more than others, I think oftentimes also because they have been through more bad experiences that caused them to start feelkng acting that way.
But I’m sayin tho majority of us got a summary to write but don’t feel like watching
I gotta answer questions :(

I had a choice. But the choice made me become a toxic person.
This has nothing to do with my academics. I just wanna download this vid to watch later.
Machiavelli's "The Prince" is WHY.
Because they usually don't have the courage to do the right thing. Put this on another post but it fits here too: Have you ever been in the position where you are doing the right thing and everyone else isn't? That's being a Sheepdog. What is hard for the Sheepdog is that the path it takes is usually where one walks alone. This was this week's topic for my own subscribers on the almighty YT but it fits here too. The Sheepdog will suffer. Here is how you alleviate that lonesome walk of doing right. You look at the other dogs in the kennel. Eliminate the ones that don't know what they are talking about. That's 50% gone. Then the ones who are afraid to hunt. Another 25% gone. Then the ones who hunt but only for themselves--another 20% gone. The 5% left are the Sheepdogs. They aren't allowed near the kennel because the other dogs start snarling and barking. Why? Because the Sheepdog makes 50% look unintelligent, 25% look cowardly and 20% selfish. So the Sheepdog is condemned to walk the ridgeline alone. But the key to inner peace which took me 15 years to realize in the corrupt healthcare field I practice in is this: realize you can't make a regular dog into a Sheepdog. You don't get angry, you treat them with indifference. And you will see that other Sheepdogs will periodically pass you on other ridgelines. And others will gravitate toward you as well--because people would rather you hate them then not acknowledge them at all. And some will possibly get a little better. Hope this helps someone out there---Charles
Another problem with the money thing is yes you could turn it in but how do you know that the person you turn it into wont keep it?

People do bad things because of the people around you because I did do a really bad thing 😔

if youre only afraid of the consequences youre not doing it because you care, but because of the consequences

Let’s be honest do you have more satisfaction making fun of someone or having to donate $100 to a charity?
Or the money lost, without anyone around.. Means the money isn't belonging anymore. It's belonging to the bank, and I'm the new user :D

Money is man made. The system itself might be a total flaws but is only one we have as of now.
If not picking it up, do what?
When we picked up someone else thrashes, why not ask the same questions this presenter did with picking up the $20 bill?

Two types of criminals. One violates so many layers of interactive decency; that they commit crime and get apprehended by legal authorities. The other reacts to people, that violate many layers of decency and ends up suffering incarceration. The good behavior of the second type, gives obvious evidence, that shows through observance: A need for release. The first type would deserve the prison stay. No one should be imprisoned for being the second type. The prisons should be reviewed, to see if any victims of decency violaters are among the population. Throw away logs and begin the audition. cJT aka Charles

This was hard to watch! I truly believe God created human beings with a moral compass toward right and wrong, God has a excellent moral standard that we must try to uphold, but since we cannot we need someone to step in for our flaws which is Jesus Christ son of the living God. Read your Bible which is God’s living word towards true life!
or instead of taking the easy way out and letting others suffer for you, why dont you try instead to work on your confidence and strength of character?
Meh. The church is filled with liars and predators. Not a place to find a moral compass.
