This is a brilliant conversation. Sir is a master in Russian weapon systems. There is absolutely no doubt that Indian companies never capitalised on their relationships with Russian companies to develop their capabilities and learn. Import lobbies ensured India always continued to import.

      Yes, weird isn't it?
After 75 years, and with huge developments in missiles and space rocket engines, it's not as though Indian engineers don't know how to build engines.
Maybe it's cheaper and/or more convenient to carry on buying from Russia? Lobbies using the usual channels of influence and corruption?
      I don't know.

I agree with Sqn ldr thakur totally. We shd have kept working once we got the initial Seed Tech of engines/Jet and shd have tried to first master full tech of Mig 29 and Su 30 MKI including their engines like we r doing it for Brahmos. China did the same. West wont give u any tech , we shd remember . Even buying their Weapon directly is very tedious . They dont like to sell it to us who has half platforms from Russia half from Israel half from france. They will sell only if we had totally 100% western ecosystem.
I can guarantee they wont even sell us F16 without creating all the drama. We shd integrate our defence tech with russians infact. Russia needs funds they dont have lack of talent or research. In times of USSR they wer infact creating systems which use to blow of west. THeir Space tech was much much ahead than west. Spacex merlin engines are based on Russian Neutron rocket engines infact. Spacex bought them from russia first. Both space an defence of India shd be intgrated with russia. We shd try to work jointly on newer Engines and other Tech needed for AMCA and than Indai shd use those to make our own AMCA. russia can use them in their jets.
Infact india shd have worked with Russia to develop Newer High thrust Methalox Rocket engine for our NGLV rocket. we shd target for 100 TOnne payload rocket now like spacex Starship If we want to build base on moon. China-russia are already planning to take Nuclear reactor to moon by 2035

From @12:30 till @14:00. Sqn Ldr Thakur expresses his puzzlement as to why HAL did not progress towards the total indigenization of the engines.
For quite some time, I, too, have had the same puzzlement.
    My hypothesis is that
    1. They fight shy of any changes where blame can attach to them in case of field failures.
    2. Vendor development is difficult. It needs engineers with tech skills, the attitude of an experimental scientist, and personality traits to break down inter-(and intra-)organizational barriers. Maybe HAL lacks such people.
All engineering is an art. Some, like aircraft jet engines, are black art. Learning the secret "incantations" will entail failures. At the national level, we have to learn to work our way thru the failures.
Instead of just keeping it as a task for HAL, we should have a joint task force headed by engineers from GTRE (I presume they know a great deal more about the science and tech of engines). Metallurgy mech engg, and chemistry that needs to be experimentally investigated could be contracted to IITs and CSIR labs. (As a side effect, this could benefit Kaveri.)
Jet engines are made in Koraput. The GTRE is in Bangalore. Should they not be colocated for synergy? For the new MiG-29 engine, GTRE should operate a detachment at Koraput.

The best way to give a boost to India's jet engine capabilities is to give this ToT offer from Russia to one of our private engineering companies like Kalyani, L&T, Tata, Reliance. HAL should be allowed to remain busy in making models of the 9th Gen super fighter. It's insane to keep depending on HAL even after 70 years of non-performance.

Aadi I want to highlight something...its a matter of grave concern, but do think on this.
At the moment we are dealing with two corruptions in the Defence industry, since its Sunday, let me highlight in details.
My concern being , one of the projects - either Tejas Mk2 or the AMCA Mk1 is in danger of being killed due to sheer backlog of HAL and in favor of a foreign fighter jet , Rafale and Su75. And HAL is complicit in this. Why I say so ?
    1. Lack of interest by private aerospace companies in building indigenous fighter jet - There was a lot of interest private aerospace industries to support the production of indigenous fighters before the Russia - Ukraine conflict .But during and after the conflict the interest faded. I am fully convinced that the MRFA 'make in India' clause set forward by the Government has riled up Western defence sales people to show a level of profit and stability to the native private sector , which is unavailable if the private players invest in ADA projects. The Government expected massive participation from private players in indigenous projects but the private sector is still dreaming about the promises made by their Western partners in a board meeting.
    2. HAL's lack of interest in bumping up production capacity to intake more orders for indigenous products - When you depend on one person , doesn't matter if that person is your family - the person is convinced that he/she can run things better than you. This is the problem with HAL. And the encouragement to HAL has arrived from Russia . HAL only wants to make and deliver the Tejas Mk1A , whose orders have climbed up with time while pushing Tejas Mk2 to a timeline and production schedule where it will be no more relevant, or even the AMCA Mk1 5th Gen .The consolidated approach of both would be to acquire 100+ pcs of Su75, Make in India, because production level supply of components are not easy in Russia these days after the Russo-Ukr conflict.
These are the two levels of corruption fully visible to me now, aggravated after Rus-Ukr conflict.
How may the government combat this ?
    1. Take full control of HAL under defence ministry and immediately commission four new assembly lines under new directors from retired Air Chiefs.
    2. Fire all the currently serving incompetent supervisors under 'voluntary retirement' and introduce non paid suspension as a disciplinary measure if failing to meet project timelines.
3.Scrap MRFA and go for one Govt to Govt deal under the 'Make In India' scheme, to keep up squadron numbers . If the Rafale is the only production fighter which is qualifying, lets take it up - instead of extending MRFA till Su75 make first flight.
Maybe my perception is based on studying the history of Ajeet and lesser known facts , but the way things are - this is the most possible outcome.

Very true when India has 2 world class aircraft in the Mig29 and the Su30mki, why shud they go in for a creiminally expensive Rafale? India shud have indianised both the platforms. The 117 aircraft tender shud be a no brainer and IAF shud have gone in for the Mig 35s with TV. But now since the proverbial horse has already bolted out of the stable, India should now focus on getting the Tejas MK2 in great numbers

Vision and future map for the company is created by the leadership/management and not the workers, public or the politicians. This is why HAL has failed. Poor mediocre leadership without vision, ambition or a fighting spirit. Compare Modiji's commitment and vision for India and the commitment of these public sector leadership. They only wake up when their backside is put on fire. Now the Turkey's 5th gen fighter is putting the blow torch on DRDO and HAL's backside.

Bharat should manufacture weapons, develop technology in Bharat and made them in collaboration with Russia and buy from Russia but should never buy from Bully america. Buying weapons from america means helping economy of Criminal america. Bharat should Not collaborate with Backstabber america for weapons manufacturing. Also america weapons are expensive. american weapons r less advanced technically as compared to Russia. american weapons are much hyped.
Russia transfer technology to Bharat without any conditions but this is not the case with america. america put too many restrictions on weapon usage, where as Russia always give free hand. In case of war backstabber, untrustworthy america can stop supply of weapons, can increase price of weapons, also can activate killer switch of weapons. Whereas trustworthy Russia never betrayed Bharat and always provide most sophisticated weapons to Bharat.
Evil america ke Sath koi bhi collaboration nahi Karna chahiye. america sirf Bharat ko use karna chahta hai against China, aur Bharat ko Russia se dooor karna chahta hai so that america apni goondagardi continue rakhe paye.

HALis just lazy and do not want to make the effort to improve India Technology. It is a shame on HAL for not making the effort to make an engine that is 100% of Indian Technology.

agree. But why will they provide us tech. They know in future we can be a threat to their dominance. THey never provided much critical tech to china in their freidnly days too. Thats why china had to steal it.

Sir, I think HAL needs competition. A new company with private /public partnership or totally private with inputs from HAL should be set up and they need to get into competition and also augment production capacity.

Pointless upgrade , it’s like swapping a morris engine with an Isuzu engine on a 40+ year old ambassador. Even with modest usage these aircrafts are well past their prime . They are only good to perform secondary role and not as front line planes .

Al-Bakistan uses RD 93-3 a derivative of the RD 33 in the Chinese JF-17s.IAF says that RD 33 is advanced in Mig 29 but call out RD93 for poor performance 😂. What double standards.
