How To Shift Gears In An Automatic Car-Driving Tutorial

- In this video, I show you how to shift gears in an automatic car. Your car must be equipped with a shift lever that has a gear selector option for this to work. You must put the car into drive, and press the lever to the side. Once you have put the automatic transmission into manual mode, you can press the gear selector up or down to switch gears! This is a great way to learn when to shift gears, and is the perfect thing to do before learning how to drive a car with a manual transmission.

NEVER downshift to 1st when moving! It's ONLY to be done at a full stop, & shifted to 2nd after you get moving.
who the hell taught you to drive, a pussy?
With today's manumatic transmission, you can do it at low speed - just have to make sure the speed is very low. Even with older automatics that have 1 2 3 4 (D), you can shift down to 1st at maybe 10 mph or less. I had a 1997 Buick Riviera with a 4-speed automatic for something like 15 years. It never messed the transmission up. I now have a 1999 Mercedes C230 Kompressor with a 5-speed automatic and same situation.
But with a manual, I agree. (But you can downshift to 1st at VERY low speeds.
@@jeepwrangled79 fuck hahahaha too much testosterone. Should have more likes
So you're telling me that your automatic doesn't downshift to 1st when you go under 10mph? Because the Skoda DSG and the Vectra Auto I've driven both do, and driving my manual car I do this all the time, because right from the beginning you're taught to downshift while slowing down so as not to waste your brakes and to keep better control of the car.
**How to shift an automatic transmission when racing**: First, you put it in "L" for leave. Once you hit 30mph, you put it in "D" for drag. Then as you hit 70mph, shift it into "R" for race! Once it's towed out of the ditch, simply have the transmission repaired or replaced, then rinse & repeat! Lol
Someone's gonna try this and realize there's more power in their car than they thought!

I know this is there years later, but do you need to take off your feet while you shift or no?
@@corruptedpugs3313 I dont believe so, Since automatics shift while accelerating and its still an automatic gearbox youre just "shifting" yourself
RobinPlayz oh ok. Thank you. I’m only 2 and a half years away from driving and I wanna know everything there is before the time comes
@@corruptedpugs3313 It depends. If you're fully in automatic mode the car shifts by itself even if you apply throttle. If you're in manual mode (where you either shift manually with the gear lever or paddles behind the steering wheel) you can often shift while pressing the gas, but not always. If the revs are very high you might need to let of the gas while shifting.
This sounds more complicated than it actually is 😂 You'll get the hang of it pretty quickly when you drive. Hope this helped though :)
@@corruptedpugs3313 No you don't. Only if you're driving a stick shift because you have a clutch. I have a 2010 RX350 with the same type of sport shift. Only thing is 😄 I stopped using it cause I was so used to driving an automatic, that I'd forget to shift... 😄.
You can never have that lapse in thought with a stick shift.
I legit didnt know you can do this in automatic cars, honestly they dont look that bad now

You can say that because transmission may differ in every car. Is your car DCT, CVT, AT or AMT? I guess this car is AT. Search for the car which suits your gearbox type, okay?

very helpful sir. ive been driving manual trans for years and its my first time to drive matic trans thanks a lot!
Awesome edit. Right to the point. Getting a CX5 and I'll be testing out manual mode for sure!
A lot of people told me how to do it but no one ever showed me until today. Great vid thanks. Going to test it out later in my 2014 Dodge Avenger!
It is very simple good video. I had to learn in drivers ed on a Mazda 3 because we learned RPM control on hills in NC. I was Mainly looking for an RPM gauge point of when to shift without grinding though.. now I have a Mazda 6 to drive semi manual
So a lot of people seem to be hating on the idea of manually shifting an automatic saying you should just get a manual or let the car shift for you. I looked up this subject because I don't like how my car is shifting automatically. Rubberbanding and overall not seeming like it is shifting when I want it to. I noticed I have the option so I wanted to make sure I don't hurt anything doing it manually. Anyway, people need to stop with all the negativity. There are many reasons to do something, so what if you don't find it logical? No one cares. Nice video.
*_Somebody with logical reasoning what is this madness_*
If your automatic transmission is shifting bad you need to do a transmission drain and refill.
@@noeld9910 doesn't it depend on the color of the fluid whether you need to drain and refill or fill it back up
My car is daily driven in the midwest. Drove it through the mountains in colorado, it did not like it at all, having a hard time shifting or staying in one gear too long and the elevation didn't help the O2 sensor to let it know how much oxygen to bring in. Throw it in this manual mode through the mountains and I could tell it when to shift . This is a good one time example, but daily back in the Midwest it's fine and shifts smooth
Wren's Retreat If you’re having problems with how your car is performing when automatically shifting gears, you really ought to visit the car dealer or a workshop. It should perform well and the manual gear feature is not an option for owners not content with the automatic shifting.
Ah yes, manual gears in an automatic. I do this everyday. Its quite fun for beginners like me who doesnt know how to use a clutch as good as others

Not funny I didn't laugh. Your joke is so bad I would have preferred the joke went over my head and you gave up re-telling me the joke. To be honest this is a horrid attempt at trying to get a laugh out of me. Not a chuckle, not a hehe, not even a subtle burst of air out of my esophagus. Science says before you laugh your brain preps your face muscles but I didn't even feel the slightest twitch. 0/10 this joke is so bad I cannot believe anyone legally allowed you to be creative at all. The amount of brain power you must have put into that joke has the potential to power every house on Earth. Get a personality and learn how to make jokes, read a book. I'm not saying this to be funny I genuinely mean it on how this is just bottom barrel embarrassment at comedy. You've single handedly killed humor and every comedic act on the planet. I'm so disappointed that society has failed as a whole in being able to teach you how to be funny. Honestly if I put in all my power and time to try and make your joke funny it would require Einstein himself to build a device to strap me into so I can be connected to the energy of a billion stars to do it, and even then all that joke would get from people is a subtle scuff. You're lucky I still have the slightest of empathy for you after telling that joke otherwise I would have committed every war crime in the book just to prevent you from attempting any humor ever again. We should put that joke in text books so future generations can be wary of becoming such an absolute comedic failure. Im disappointed, hurt, and outright offended that my precious time has been wasted in my brain understanding that joke. In the time that took I was planning on helping kids who have been orphaned, but because of that you've waisted my time explaining the obscene integrity of your terrible attempt at comedy. Now those kids are suffering without meals and there's nobody to blame but you. I hope you're happy with what you have done and I truly hope you can move on and learn from this piss poor attempt
The FrenchFryGuy that was a bit harsh bro, i understand that’s just your opinion and I 100% respect that everyone’s allowed to have their own opinions on something but that entire comment you put was just uncalled for, the worst part was “I cannot believe anyone legally allowed you to be creative at all” now that’s just rude man that’s all I’m saying, now I’m gonna disappear into the depths of youtube till another person comments

Do you have to be on the brake at all when downshifting? Like when you gear to P or down to 2 or 1 in older transmissions
Can anyone inform when to know to change gears? Is it the same between using the M on auto as driving an actual manual car? Thanks
the best of both worlds
This is where I understood I understood automatic out of most videos on utube… very creat🤞🏻
I’m embarrassed to say that my driving instructor has advised me to look into automatic driving as I’ve been having issues with gears.
No shame in it. Manual is an old fashioned way of driving which very few countries teach. America is 97% automatic cars. It’s just easier and less trouble. No stalling. Long distance driving is easy in an automatic. Manual really has hardly any benefits to it.
ski mask s manual has huge benefits. It allows you to be in control of the car a lot more - especially apparent when automatic cars keep you in low RPMs in High gears all the time, which especially gets annoying when you are going up hills (since it takes so long to accelerate). I wish manual transmission would stay around forever (thankfully it isn't going anywhere in EU atm)
It's definitely okay! Nothing's wrong with that. You needn't feel embarrassed.
@@tommyshommy but you need to see that even automatic cars (except CVT) have manual shifting and that's really great. It helps you to keep control of the gears.
Saraswathi Janakiraman not as great as having manual transmission cars

Thank you for making this video so helpful 🥰🥰😁
Thanks! My sister was confused about her Outback!
This video helped me a lot! Just wondering, can you do one where you use the manual gears on somewhat difficult uphill or downhill roads?
Emskiee what is the point of gears? Like what does it do
@@user-sx7xm4qd4r I think it gives you engine braking and the feeling of driving a manual car without worrying about the clutch. Not really an expert on this but it's useful for when you need lower gears on uphill slopes for better torque and avoiding engine strain with it automatically switching between gears on itself and on downhill slopes to avoid burning your brakes.
The way I do it on my older car (only for racing off the line, don't do it often--TAKE CARE OF YOUR TRANS)--set transmission to "1" (which means first gear) on the drive stick.
Floor it, hit redline, shift to "2" (1 up from "1") on the drive stick. Hit redline, shift to "D" (1 up) on the drive stick. Easy.

Hi. Do you need to take off your foot from gas pedal when shifting? Thanks
I have the exact same question.
Should I let off the gas when switching gears or can I leave my foot where it is and change gears?
The gas si automatically cut by ecu when it shifts a gear, it doesn't matter what you do.

Facts like “wanna take a ride in my “manual” car” 😂🤣
I do this in my e46 but I feel drag with the gears, especially when I downshift. I have never driven a manual. I shift down around 2000rpm and my car noticeably slows down. Im not sure if im downshifting too early, or too late, ive tried at 3000rpm and still have "drag"
Havent really had much experience with auto transmisions like this ive only driven standard and pretty standard to upshift at 2000 rpm and downshift is a bit more complicated. This is somewhat like it but i cant say anything for sure lol
Its completely normal thats engine braking, it happens in manuals alot and its usefull for hills
Do you need to remove your foot of the gas as well like in a manual car
MrPicky400 is that a question? i tried doing both. the engine made weird sounds idk. i am confused now coz some people say it’s fine to keep ur foot
@@wizmhmd4172 yeah its confusing
You keep your foot on the gas when it shifts for you don't you? 😂
No, you don't have ro. The only reason you take the foot in a manual is for the synchroniser to work better. But as you don't have that problem in a CVT, you can keep your foot on. It's gonna be super weird though.
You are so helpful, thank you

What the fuck is a Nissan Nismo
Do you have to downshift when coming to a stop like a manual transmission?
Nope. I come to a stop in 3rd gear all the time and just take off in 3rd gear. (Because I break traction in 1st gear if I get on the gas a little to hard)
The car automatically down shifts as you slow down!
Alex Garcia yes
Nope, some cars a different than others though. For example my parents 2009 Saturn outlook has the ability to shift manually, however that just controls the highest gear you allow it to go in. For example, you can upshift 1 to 2, 2 to 3 and so on. However if you try to take off in say 3rd, it automatically goes into 1 and then stops shifting once it gets to 3.
Is there certain rpms and speed that we need to shift the gears?
For real in this video is useless
@@manidk4997 i later realized that you change gears depending on rpm. changing gears around 2500 rpm is the fuel efficient way or to make more power you dont change gears until higher rpms
well if you want to conserve gas you need to usually shift at a lower rpm but if you wanna go fast you don't need to shift until you're in the redline or close
it helps alot thanks hommy
Question? To shift to second and third etc, do you remove foot from gas to shift or just shift pressing
Gas?
do you have o get your foot of the gas when shifting???

I'm getting the sense you're from the east coast from your accent lol. Great tutorial!
I didnt want to fully commit to getting a manual because I don't like the clutch to shift gears, I prefer an auto with a manual setting, you get a park mode and it's easier.
Manual is very fun though you really feel like you're more in the experience, i.know I love it.
when you do shift gears should you take your foot off the gas or at least press it lighter??
If your upshifting keep pushing on the gas, if your down shifting gears dont push on the pedal you dont want the RPMs to increase if you're going to downshift

Good. Very well said and it got a ring
But how do you know when to shift and can you break normally in a high gear?
George Louis the needle goes to 3 in the speedometer, once its at 3 or barely past 3 shift
My buddies told me if you’re wanting to go faster and race people then shift when your RPM’s get to nearly red line
But I’m confused on when to shift down because when I shifted down my car jolted and nearly sent me through the window
@@timberwolves8639 that means you were going too fast for a downshift. You have to listen to the engine, but a rule of thumb is that you don't want your rpm to be under 1500, under 1500 the engine starts to struggle. Both on diesel and petrol, but to keep your diesel engine even healthier you want to keep it above 2000 rpm as much as possible, because the diesel ignition temperature is lower than of petrol. But, unfortunately you will use up more fuel, but overall it should save you money in the long run. With petrol you can be a little bit rougher.
TimberWolves 8 you got to slow down first to down shift don’t down shift it u going 5000Mps wait till your meter hits 3 or 2 and start down shifting
