    I'd kill to get this book in English. Hopefully Dark Horse has some good stuff coming out in the near future.

      I doubt it. Heavy Metal had a different licence in the US and who knows who owns the rights for these stories there.

    • @earlgrey862
      @earlgrey862  Před 3 lety +2

      the old Schwermetall magazines were published by one rather underground outfit called "Volksverlag"... maybe Splitter could buy the rights from whoever inherited them for a (relative) bargain. I absolutely don't know... but the Volksverlag was rather some underground publisher with very limited money, so I don't believe that they were able to pay a fortune for the rights to metal hurlant.

      Don't hold your breath. There's a huge issue with Moebius' licensing, from what I understand it's his wife / family who are blocking everything - most likely out of greed.. That's why the thing you see reprinted is Incal and pretty much only Incal... plus some EU editions of Bluberry

  • @whssy

    Nice edition. Strange to think that when I lived briefly in Cherbourg and then Paris in 1989-90 it was still possible to get the old editions of this material as it originally appeared -, for relatively little money. But this was 15-20 years after it first appeared and the colour reprints had started. It's amazing to think that I've had those books for over 30 years now - twice as long as it took for them to get sold in the first place. Oddly. the final Moebius exhibit in his lifetime was at the art gallery in Cherbourg that I walked past every day for 9 months. I did get to thank him for his work at a signing in at the Central Copenhagen Library in 1994, where there was also an exhibit.

    Those Arzak stories reminded me of The Mercenary by Vicente Segrelles, which is funny because that series always reminds me of the John Carter of Mars series of books.

    great review. I had to think about Moebius just today when I tried the PC game "Sable" - it is like flying a hoverbike in one of his stories.

      einen Vergleich zwischen den 3en kann ich nicht bewerkstelligen, da ich nur die deutschen Schwermetallhefte besitze (und da auch nur #1 - 20).

    Weird, I thought that the german volume was like the french Oeuvre Hermetique, which I own but there are actually some differences. For example in your edition some stories arepresented in color, while they were originally in b&w. The colorization is done by Marvel Epic when they published his works to appeal the american market. I'm not going to do a list of the ones that should be in b&w, but for instance The Artifact is one of them. The Airtight Garage at least is thankfully in its original splendour. Actually Moebius colored only a few of his works. The german edition has also more extras, it has 2 or 3 more stories but lacks the Man from Ciguri. Well, it's just another collection but very similar.
    It's always a nice day when we look at some of Moebius' stuffs.

    • @earlgrey862
      @earlgrey862  Před 3 lety +1

      the book collects the stories as they appeared in the German Schwermetall magazines from the publisher Volksverlag... it was rather an underground outfit with very limited ressources to produce the comics, so no wonder that they were not always as accurate with the originals in terms of coloring and such. But Schwermetall was their flagship title ... so they put some effort into it nevertheless.

    I’ve sorta just discovered moebies but I’ve always enjoyed and was a fan of heavy metal. Just didn’t know until recently the artist behind a lot of the pop art of the 70’s and 80’s was this genius. I found out because of a documentary of Dune:: his collaboration with Jodorusky… spelling is probably wrong but you know what I’m saying. I love the German issue book you shared! Fantastic I really like that you shared this video. I like your channel

    Great video as always. Who would you say is your favourite writer-artist? Someone who writes and illustrates the whole thing. I like Daniel Clowes, his Eightball comic is very good although it has that same experimental hit-and-miss quality of the Moebius Heavy Metal stuff. I quite like Scott McCloud, but only really for the non-fictional comics-about-comics he did. You've mentioned Noah Van Sciver, any others? I struggle to think of creators that can do both well. Usually a great writer is a lesser cartoonist (Alan Moore, Chuck Dixon, Grant Morrison can all draw, but not to a high level) or a great cartoonist is a lesser writer (Moebius, McFarlane, many others). There's a special quality to comics that are completely written and drawn by a single person, a unique charm. But I've never come across a term to distinguish it. 'Auteur' comics perhaps?

    • @earlgrey862
      @earlgrey862  Před 3 lety +1

      Hermann, Francois Bourgeon, Cosey, Derib, Hugo Pratt, Druillet... Peter Bagge, a lot of the underground cartoonists like S.Clay Wilson & Robert Crumb & of course (and not very surprising I guess:) the Hernandez brothers ... the list gets longer pretty quickly while thinking about it & I would like to add Jason Lutes, Emil Ferris and some other "one hit wonders" ... good idea for another vid actually :)

      @@earlgrey862 thanks for the tips, a video would be even better of course. For 'one hit wonders' I thought of Peter Blegvad's Book of Leviathan: www.leviathan.co.uk/menu.html it's collected newspaper strips but reads very well as a book. There's nothing like it, very cool stuff. Matt Groening was a big fan.

    • @whssy

      All this material has been printed before. If you want the French versions look out for the books "Le Garage Hermetique" (you will probably only find this in colour though), "Le Bandard Fou", "L'homme, est-il bon?" and "La Déviation." which this book compiles.

      @@VisualFeast7557 what do you need to know exactly?
      1st of all, are we talking about the "Oeuvre Hermetique"? The book that costs 80€ and has the cover of the "butterfly man" on a flower? It is the french edition that collects almost all the stories that Earl has shown in the video but it instead has The Man from Ciguri, which is 46 pages. It is also more respectful to the originals, I mean there are some stories that were born in b&w. For example the one with Druillet's script, Approach on Centauri, is in b&w. If you want to know something else... The pages' quality ain't the best: you can see the lines behind.

    • @whssy

      @@OdysseyMichele I totally agree. The original black and white art is much more to my taste than the late 80s colourisations.
