  • In our latest video on Georges Cameras TV, Nathan compares the Canon RF 15-35mm F/2.8L IS USM and Canon RF 14-35mm F/4L IS USM lenses.
    It’s reassuring to know that Canon is paying close attention to the needs of photographers by releasing the Canon RF 14-35mm F/4L IS USM lens. But that begs the question: how does this differ from the hugely popular Canon RF 15-35mm F/2.8L IS USM lens? Both full-frame format lenses have near-identical focal ranges, excellent image quality and performance. Why has Canon delivered a near-identical lens in terms of performance - with the exception of aperture?
    The Canon RF 15-35mm F/2.8L IS USM is a stabilized lens released at the end of 2019. It was the final entry in an F/2.8 trio of stabilized lenses for RF mount. The lens joined the incredibly popular Canon RF 24-70mm f/2.8L IS USM lens and the RF 70-200mm f/2.8L IS USM lens to provide a complete zoom kit for Canon EOS R shooters.
    The Canon RF 15-35mm F/2.8 is a full-frame format wide-angle zoom with an F/2.8 to F/22 aperture, making it ideal for landscape and astro alike. It features optical image stabilization to deliver 5-stops of anti-shake performance in even the toughest of lighting conditions. The wide zoom ring effortlessly controls the zoom-range transition. The lens barrel features an OIS On/Off switch and a Manual/Autofocus selection switch.
    Canon has just announced the all-new Canon RF 14-35mm F/4L IS USM. It also features image stabilization, stunning image quality and represents an excellent wide-angle zoom for enthusiast photographers. Regardless of shooting landscape, astrophotography or video and vlogs, the Canon RF 14-35mm F/4L IS USM is an excellent option.
    The Canon RF 14-35mm F/4L IS USM is a superior enthusiast-level wide-angle zoom with an F/4 to F/22 aperture range. Despite not being as fast as the Canon RF 15-35mm F/2.8, the lens performs exceptionally in all lighting conditions. Thanks to the 5.5 stops of anti-shake performance gained from the optical image stabilization, slow shutter speed work is no issue. It features a slightly wider field of view to its older brother. The Canon RF 14-35mm F/4L IS USM also offers optical sharpness throughout the entire range. In fact, at F/4, there is no noticeable difference between the two lenses.
    Canon has taken note of the needs of all levels of photographers and videographers. They’ve developed a pair of near-identical lenses that both boast optical brilliance and stunning performance. Yet they serve very different purposes, and what’s more, they acknowledge the budget considerations of photographers. If you’re looking for the best Canon RF wide zoom to match with your Canon EOS R mirrorless camera body, head in-store or online at Georges Cameras.

    F4 is a money maker if you are into a real estate business both for photo and video, great replacement for ef 16-35mm f/4, worth every penny to me. I don't shoot skies so 2.8 at this lens is totally irrelevant to me. It mounts great at gimbal and paired with R6 you can shoot 1s shutter speed and have awesome images if you don't have a shaky hands.

    I just received my 14-35, BIG issues with barrel distortion in RAW format. There is no replacement lens profile in LR that will correct it. JPG images when shooting RAW+JPG have very straight verticals, with almost no need to correct in post, however, the equivalent RAW file of the same picture is unusable. I shoot real estate photography and live on the wide angle capability of a lens. Anyone who has priced these lenses knows that Cannon does not give them away. For the money, it is a complete fail at the moment. A rep from cannon informed me that the digital correction is coming, but she could not say when. They rushed this lens to market, seemingly not caring that the reason folks will purchase the lens was for its rectilinear format at 14mm, and they had no correction for the distortion. Currently, if you shoot RAW, you can purchase this lens and use it as a door stop.

      @rossbarton5900 Před 3 lety +1

      @@ozmiggy55 It may be a deal breaker for some. If you really want to shoot night skies then having f/2.8 glass is necessary to do it well so it's worth the extra investment. For folks who don't need that wide open an aperture, then the f/4 will be a great lens. Personally I don't shoot night skies very much. I own the EF 16-35mm f/4L IS USM which is a wonderful lens - so when I switch to the R series, I will buy the 14-35mm f/4. I don't need to spend the extra $$$ on the larger aperture glass and saving weight is also a big benefit for the work I do...

    Hey thanks for doing the comparison. I have a few questions if you can spare the time. Does the sharpness remain equal above F4 or does the 15-35 get better than the 14-35 at say F8? Does one handle chromatic aberrations better than the others? thinking woodlands with bare branches. And finally, how is the ghosting on the 14-35 when shooting into direct sunlight for sunstar effects?

    • @GeorgesCamerasTV
      @GeorgesCamerasTV  Před 3 lety +6

      Hi there! Great questions! Both lenses are very sharp at f/4 and above, with very little vignetting at this aperture too at their widest. When the f/2.8 is wide open there is a little bit of vignette at the corners, but it’s not the worst. As for chromatic aberration, both lenses show very little at all focal lengths. They also keep lines very straight, ensuring you have accurate images! In regards to shooting directly into the sunlight, you’ll be able to get some beautiful sun star effects with the RF 14-35mm f/4L, as this lens has 9 aperture blades. When shooting stopped down at a narrow point source of light, you should get 18 points on a sun star effect. Even at f/4 you will get fairly pleasing and well sized sun stars! This lens also features Canon’s quality glass, in which you can be confident that you wont get distracting flares and ghosting when shooting at direct sunlight.

As a property and architectural photographer (who also does the occasional landscape), I am most interested in how these lenses perform at f8-11. Particularly overall sharpness, sharpness in the corners and edges, vignetting, chromatic aberration and most of all distortion. I'm looking for a lens with the least distortion possible so that walls, floors and ceilings that are meant to be straight, actually look straight without having to tweak things in LR or PS. You didn't cover any of that.
