    I am a lawn technician in york Pa.. I've been an applicator for 6 years.. and recently acquired my applicator license thru Penn state. I've been trying to take my job more seriously now, with the knowledge I acquired through the core and lawn category. Right now I'm currently studying the different pros and cons to cool season grasses to educate our customers for aeration and overseeding this year.. I've always been a fan of tall fescue due to the cultivars being more resistant.. this video and the 1st one were extremely helpful. Thank u.. definitely liked and subscribed

      In MN we view tall fescue like it’s crab grass or a weed. It’s trailer park grass in terms of quality. Thick ugly blades. Razor sharp. Does not give a clean cut. If there was a chemical that would kill only it I would nuke my yard to get ride of it. It’s like the crap they use at the huge acreage of sports fields at the parks and poor schools that don’t have maintenance budgets. No thank you. Not at my beautiful house.

    BBU is amazing, had horrible conditions after I seeded last year and it still came in way better than I excepted! Can't wait to overseed it this fall and see how it is next year!

    What do you think is the prettiest of the cool and warm seasoned grasses? I have a wide variety that I can put down but I am just not sure which is the prettiest or best looking? I live in a transition zone. We are not in an area that gets high traffic. And so, I am simply looking for the best looking grass. There is partial shade in the area it's going down. Thank you for your time and entertaining videos. They are very educational.

    • @OutoftheWeeds
      @OutoftheWeeds  Před rokem +1

      Thank you for watching! I think it all depends on where you live in the transition zone. I think as far as being pretty, no cool season grass beats Kentucky bluegrass. The issue is that if you get temps consistently above 85, the kbg needs tons of water to keep green in the summer. Turf Type Tall Fescue can pretty much get as dark green and is better with higher temps, so if you live further south, that'd be a better cool season grass. As far as warm season grasses, I don't know much about them, but I've watched a ton of Lawn Care Nut videos, and I think his Empire Zoysia is absolutely beautiful. Just be very careful if you're wanting to mix cool and warm season grasses together. Most warm season grasses are very aggressive, so they will take over most cool season grasses they are with. Hope this helps! Have a great day!

      @@OutoftheWeeds the transition zone I live in is Las Vegas, so we definitely get temperature in the 100s. In fact usually about 60 days we have over 100°. Part of my lawn is in medium shade. I do like tall fescue. I am just hoping it likes me as much as it used to. I have a postage stamp lawn. But, I want it to be the best looking postage stamp in my community. I am just not sure on how to go about doing that. I did have the soil tested in the backyard and it was deficient in every thing. Especially NPK and most micronutrients. I pretty much settled now on RFT. So, I now need to learn when and how to put the seat down at the right time. And then how to fertilize it properly. I was shocked to see my soil test. Any suggestions I would love to hear from you. Thank you.

      @OutoftheWeeds  Před rokem +1

      Yeah I think tall fescue would be a good choice for your situation. I would wait until about the second or third week of September (around Labor Day) to seed. Start with aerating to get things loosened up. Then put down the seed and fertilizer. Since it is lacking in nutrients I would definitely use a starter fertilizer that has all three of the macros. Then, I would also put down a natural fertilizer (like milorganite or menards brand). Cover it all with a thin layer of peat moss and then lots of water for the following 3-4 weeks. Don't soak but just enough to keep the seed wet without drying out. I try to do 3 times a day for short periods. After it starts getting established I go back to the normal 1-1 1/2 inches of water a week.

      @@OutoftheWeeds then that is what I will be doing. Third week of September I will start. It should cool down to under 100° by then. (I hope so!). The lawn does need both aerating and dethatching. I have the peat moss ready to go. Waiting is the hard part! I will keep you informed on how it is going. Thanks for taking an interest in my lawn and giving me your ideas. I really appreciate it.

    The stores in my area don’t sell the Jonathan Green seed I like, so I have to order it directly online. The problem is I’ve ordered a few times and because I can’t check the label, some of the bags have lower percentages of germination than other bags, and I can’t check the dates of the bags.

    • @OutoftheWeeds
      @OutoftheWeeds  Před rokem

      Yeah the only place I see their grass seed is Ace Hardware around my area. Hopefully the outlet you purchase seed from makes sure they aren't sending people old seed but I'd definitely be sure to verify when you get it! Also I find that turf supply stores (Site One and Advanced Turf solutions are examples in my area) sell really high quality grass seed that you can't find in big box stores and their prices can be cheaper. I went that route this year and have been really happy with what I got!!

    What is the best grass to use for my front yard where I play croquet. I know that bent grass is best for croquet but what would be the next best combination of grass seed to use to use on my current front lawn of grass.

    • @OutoftheWeeds
      @OutoftheWeeds  Před rokem

      Thanks for watching! I'm not sure what part of the country you live in, but if you have cool season grass I would definitely stick to fine fescue. They are typically the thinnest cool season grass and would be better for croquet than most of the other cool season grasses.

    How much does the germination rate change with “older” seed - just at its sell by date

    • @OutoftheWeeds
      @OutoftheWeeds  Před 2 lety +2

      I have never used old grass seed so I don't know from experience but from what I've read they say the germination percentage drops 10-20% per year of storage. That's assuming it is stored properly.

    UGH. Tall Fescue. Essentially crabgrass but you cant kill just it. It’s so awful. Thick and sharp blades. In MN we hand pull it because it’s viewed as low brow as weeds. Awful shit
