So you have a recommendation for something that is like Tenacity?? For some reason I can't have it shipped to MN. I need to get new seed in some horribly "seeded" areas of construction that our city did. They literally planted weeds.
I recently purchased 75lbs of your tall fescue. The bags don’t have a spreader setting recommendation. Can you recommend one? Scott spreader for overseed.
Just thatched/aerated and reseeded my front with your tall fescue/blue grass mix. And overseeded my back with the same mix. Fingers crossed it all comes in.
Did my aeration/dethatching two weeks ago between heat stretches in NE Iowa. Been watering everyday while overseeding with Ryan’s Perrenial Elite Ryegrass and Scott’s Starter Fert. The grass started to “pop” on day four and has been filling great across the board. Very happy/impressed with the seed considering the less than perfect conditions (patience got the best of me).
Great video Ryan! All the questions that I had you answered in this video. Thanks for all your hard work creating this content so we can have amazing lawns like yours. Take care Ryan!!
Started a complete lawn renovation today. Spent three hours scarifying 2200 sq. ft. raking and piling up the debris. Tomorrow, I'll remove it all to our compost pile. I'm also ordering 8 cubic yards of organic topsoil. That will get spread and leveled this coming week, after which I'm putting down Defiance XRE Tall Fescue. Because of our intense Summer here in North Texas (2nd hottest and driest ever recorded), I basically had no lawn and barely even any weeds. We've received less than half of our annual rainfall, so I'll be watering religiously to get this Fescue established before our first frost, which is normally in about 5 weeks. I was forced to wait until now, because this cultivar of Fescue requires a soil temperature of less than 72 degrees and we're still in the 90s, but with cooler nights (finally). If there is some way that I could share progress photos with you, I'd love to do that, just let me know how. Cheers and thanks for sharing your experience and expertise.
Over seeded with a tall fescue and I'm back to mowing after an amazing germination, super grateful for your advice. Watched my neighbors lawns burn right up as soon as it got warm right after they spent good money on lawn service, kind of a shame imo. You helped bring life back into my lawn and being out in the yard ive met a bunch of ppl who live in my community. I'm way pumped to see my lawn next spring 🤙
Great video! Keeping it simple. I put down some seed last Monday and it’s popping today (Sunday). So I was kinda hoping to get a cut in before it popped, but oh well. Combo of overseeding and some bare spots. For anyone looking for a great patching soil mix, I do 2 bags of el-cheapo Home Depot top soil to 1 bag of “washed play sand”. One is listed by volume, one by weight, so I honestly don’t know the real ratio, but it’s probably more like 3 or 4 to 1, soil/sand. That little bit of sand makes it spread SO nicely. Great for areas you just need to add a little depth and feather out.
Normal fall routine here in PA. Dethatch, aerate, overseed, and then fertilize to hopefully get me through the winter. Always excited for this time, the heat just needs to chill out..
Temps have started to cool in Eastern NE. Leveled my lawn with top soil after cutting down a silver maple & redoing a retaining wall. Laid down fresh sod but mature areas of the lawn will get the falls works this weekend. Aeration & over-seeding with Compost FTW!
Can not wait to get back at it. Had a company take over my fertilizer/weed control last year. They also did aerating and seeding. Not happy at all with their results. I used to have the greenest, if not top 3 greenest yards, not anymore.... I feel like I'm starting over again, although, I'm not doing a full renovation again (did that 2 years ago). Definitely going to be dethatching, aerating and overseeding. Trying to stay on a better fertilizer program this time
Loved cool season grass. Had that for 3 years. When we moved to our new house (Oct 2022) I performed a complete lawn reno and went with warm season turf, GCI Alpha Elite Bermuda. So my season is coming to an end. 😢
Just did my fall height of cut reset to keep my lawn shorter for fall and over winter and put my fertilizer and pre emergent out. Trying my best the past few years to keep poa in check with fall pre. Then overseeded the past two early springs like just as the grass is barley waking up
Just purchased your Fescue seed for fall overseeding. Had germination in 4 days. Wow good stuff! My question is when should I mow and fertilize my new grass? Thanks
I'm in the DFW area. 4th hottest and 3rd driest Summer on record. We'll set two more records today and tomorrow. I'm doing a full lawn reno as soon as our soil temp reaches 72 degrees. I had planned on starting September 15th, but that clearly isn't going to happen. Probably 1st or 2nd week of October. Doing the whole nine yards. Removal of old "turf" (nothing more than dead weeds at this point, no grass). Scalp > scarify > dethatch > remove all debris > aerate > top dress with 2-4 inches of sandy loam topsoil > Level > seed > roll/press > roll a thin layer of peat > fertilize > water 3 times/day and pray that the work pays off. Did a soil test and determined proper fert needs. Really hoping that I'll have a nice lawn come Spring. Cultivar: Defiance XRE Tall Fescue I know, we're hotter than balls in the Summer, but I had a fescue lawn here about 20 years ago and it did fantastic, but failed due to neglect. Swinging for the fence on this one.
I have a project lawn we did a full renovation on. I used your fescue blend seed. For my lawn just doing the classic dethatch n aerate with a nitrogen blitz plan. I'm doing bi-weekly AMS and 2 apps of granular.
I wanted to get better quality grass in my tall fescue lawn without doing a full renovation so I killed the worst problem areas. During the hottest part of the summer I then scalped and aggressively dethatched and cut the watering way down to cause extreme stress and thin it out. Just a few days ago I aerated the hell out of it and then went down with a mix of premium Kentucky bluegrass and turf-type tall fescue. My hope is for the new seed to come up and take over before the old mutt varieties of fescue have a chance to recover. I'm hopeful since I could clearly spot the areas of my premium grass since it die off when I induced stress. Most of the stuff I hoping to choke out just kind of died off.
Started a full lawn reno based on your older video. Doing glyphosate a while age, then seed and top dressing last weekend. Using your KB mix. I hope it will come out great.
I planted my KBG here in MN at the exact same time you planted yours, not on purpose, just a happy accident. Anyway, my grass doesn't look nearly as filled out as yours does. I've been considering putting down another round of seed because I have some really bad bare spots. We had a LOT of heat this late summer/early fall and I just don't think they could germinate. Hopefully this will help going into winter so I can have a good healthy KBG lawn come Spring '24.
Overseeded with GCI Cool Blue Labor Day weekend and have germination in 3 days. Temperature are in the 90’s until end of this weekend when they drop back to 70’s so I’ve been watering 5 times a day for 15 minutes a pop. Worried I went a little heavy with the peat moss in some spots though. We’ll see I guess. I applied Scott’s starter fert, low rate of propaconazole 14.3, Humic12, Air8, Sea-K, hydretain and tenacity same day as seeding. It’s been 6 days and turf is ridiculously long already. I cut it down to 2.5” day of seeding and it’s probably around 4.5” if not higher already
I’m in So. Calif. and just , today, Sept. 7th,seeded about. 300sq.ft. Area of bare dirt with GCI Cool Blue. I have some seed showing through my top cover, do you think I’ll be ok? Watering 3 times a day.
@@troutman1951 yeah as long as your keeping the seed wet you should be good everyone’s soil is different some people only need to water 3 times for 5 minutes bc they’re soil holds water well I have sandy soil and full sun and have to run my sprinklers 5 times. And seeding is the only time I’ll water later in the evening. My last sprinkler session is around 7 P.M. that way it stays wet all night. The fescue in the Cool Blue is going to germinate much faster than the KBG so keep watering even after you start seeing germination bc the KBG can take anywhere from 7-21 days but the more you keep it wet the faster it will germinate.
@@troutman1951 I will cut back on my watering a lot after this weekend once temperature drop down to 70’s as well. A little seed exposure won’t hurt. Idk if you work in the morning but I saturate the bare areas around 5:30 AM before work that way I know it won’t dry out during the hot noon hours while I’m at work. Just do your best to keep it wet.
Got to over seed. WIll rake out some dead stuff mow it low. overseed with some starter fert. Hope to be done by sat. Next week looks cooler and some rain. Finally !!!
Already finished an overseed in my front and am doing the nitrogen blitz in the rest of the front. My backyard, the sophomore season of a reno, I topdressed last Saturday with sand and started the blitz as well.
Got my rye trained nice and short. Been spoon feeding through summer. Now it’s time to kick it up a notch and leave my neighbors in the dust 😎 also need to do a light top dressing and overseed.. then it’s game over!
North Alabama checking in....we will hit the high 50's for lows next week with highs in the low 80's. I timed it just right. The Tttf/KBG blend germinated in about 8 days Best grass seed I've ever used.
I just bought a lawn leveling rake, and wow, it is an amazing tool like you said. Got the lawn seeded now with rye and blue grass here in the seacoast of NH. Reel mower for next year. 😊
Good tips Ryan! I'm starting on my backyard regimen this weekend. Grass has gotten a little out of control length wise, but none the less, looks healthy. Plan on putting down some fertilizer and some over seed + dirt in the coming weeks. Still waiting for the weather to cool down a bit more.
Getting Some of your Elite Perennial Rye down here this weekend in central Iowa. Gonna water it in to make sure. Im abandoning the weeds for the fall and will make sure and keep them at bay next spring when the turf develops alittle better.
I've neglected my lawn all summer. I did water often but no fertilizer and I have a ton of weeds. I'm going to hit it hard this September and hopefully have a nice looking lawn through November and a great start to Spring. As always thanks for the tips.
Thanks for the tips. I love watching your videos. I’m renovating my front yard this year with your perennial ryegrass and on day 10 now. It’s coming in well too. I’m very excited to see how it looks over the next few weeks.
My lawn broke my heart this year with the seed stalls. I ended up with patches of brown stalks all over my green lawn, so when it got dry again I let it go dormant. I'd rather have a brown lawn than a brown and green lawn. I also don't have to waste my time or water. I want to do some seeding and fertilizing now that it's cooler. It's still dry though and uo until a few days ago it was hot!
Hey Ryan I've been seeing a lot of videos online about Pre Germinating grass seed, especially for Kentucky Blue Grass. It's supposedly going to cut the germination time by have and some people have been getting Blue grass sprouting at about 1 week. Have you ever looked into this at all? Have you ever tried it? I look forward to hearing your response and possibly a new video on it. Thanks!
I ordered RTF and was planning a scalp, scarify, and overseed but had to wait out this heatwave here in Connecticut. Temps just started to drop today, so I'll get out there Monday and get at it. Thanks for the work you do! One question, is leaf compost good for a top dressing?
Moved in last Nov, and the yard was a mess. Ignored until about May due to several house issues. Regular mowing alone helped a bunch. I did do a little weed/feed late spring which also helped, however I didn't really catch anything in time for pre-emergent and so, fought weeds. Better now. I'm buying dethatcher, the lawn visibly needs that. I will have to only occasionally time any seeding with rain, because I still have not fixed the front spigot and overall ... don't like the "idea" of watering a lawn from tap water. Trying to keep it simple; the lawn is 84 years old, needs to be leveled, and moles expunged, and dug for gutter drainage. So I don't need it to be "great."
Voles wrecked my plans for my yard this fall. Instead of doing a nice thorough dethatch like I had planned, I'll probably only end up doing an aeration and overseed of the dead areas.
Just moved into a rental home in May of this year in North Carolina. Yard is chock full of crabgrass due to lack of maintenance. Fall is looking like heavy weed control and dethatch.
Why don't you have any options for granular fertilizer spreaders on your website? The only one I see is the classic Scott's turd builder spreader and I don't like it. I want a better option and I saw in this video you were using a different spreader but never mentioned what spreader you use, as opposed to what you're promoting.
Hey ryan! I am a new home owner who has watched almost all of your videos and i do remember your video about the climate chart but being in georgia, i was wondering what advice you could provide. My lawn is hurting from the record heats and any tips would be amazing! I enjoy your contect and always look forward to the next!
I went heavy on fertilizer last fall and it was looking great, but I went light in spring (thinking I beefed it up plenty last fall) and then the weather was super weird, so it's struggled the entire summer
I have aerated, dethatched, overseeded, and plan to use a Scotts Starter fertilizer. I would like to apply weed control with the starter fertilizer the same time but worried about the new seed. Suggestions helpful.
Hey there! Great content! I'm worried about doing a weed control because I just overseeded. I don't want to destroy any new growth. Can I just do some weed control in the spring? Denver area... generally we have our last snow in April. Thanks!
It may be time for you but here in Maryland not quite there. Still in the upper 90s. Can’t even trust the weather man to make plans for fall maintenance
St Augustine in Cypress , Texas. Brown patches, a few barren patches. some weeds popping up in places. Still getting up to 95…would you put sand or top soil before fertilizing? Waiting for it to cool down…
My lawn is a mix of ryegrass, fescue and KBG. Every year, after summer, the lawn thins out. It's a non-irrigated lawn for the most part. I only drag out the sprinklers and water if we haven't received rain for a few weeks. So I'm guessing it's the ryegrass that dies off.
My lawn is similar. Why type of fescue is yours? I have fine fescue, and the fine fescue can’t take direct sun light. Mine fries in the sun. There used to be trees where my fine fescue is. With them gone, I have to water a lot and keep overseeding to push out the dead fine fescue. Your KBG is probably what is dying if you aren’t maintaining it with water and Fert. It’s a very high maintenance grass.
@@Piccolo_Re You're right. I forgot to mention there is a good amount of chewings fescue leftover from one of my first lawn renovations, during a time in which I thought Scotts Sun & Shade was the highest form of grass seed . That fine fescue definitely dies off in the summer and turns into a dead, sponge of grass that chokes out the lawn.
Hi Ryan. I love watch and learn more about my yard. I planted my Kentucky bluegrass at the beginning of August. Everything has come up and it looks good. I have several weeds in the area. Amazing job Ryan!! I’m starting my Fall program tomorrow. Question, can we spray a weed killer in a small area after applying the fertilize? Thank you.
My front yard was a complete reno in spring of 22 and backyard in the fall of 22. My biggest challenge is the earthworm castings that cause the lawn to be bumpy all over again. I was thinking of top dressing the front yard this fall but wondering if it would be better to wait until spring? Any recommendations for controlling earthworms? I know they are great for the lawn and natural aerators but they make for a bumpy lawn. I am in Montana so the first frost and snow are coming soon.
Ryan do you have a video for a new yard with sod and the fall program you would recommend? Just laid new sod one week ago irrigation running twice a day

When would you overseed in southeast wisconsin? Grass took a beating this summer with a severe drought. Lots of dead grass.
I planted your tall fescue in my backyard 4 days ago so we’re close!!! Need this 90 degree weather to go away (NE)
Great tips! First reno with your turf type tall fescue, hope I don't gain too many gray hairs in the process!
Good stuff RK, hope you got the time for another podcast with RD this month.
Great video!
Great information! How do you get rid of dandelions and crab grass?
wise man, good advice
Got your perennial rye for my overseed down last Sunday. Got the water going 3x a day. Hope it takes soon.
When you mow after youve applied seeding and fertilizer, do you want to bag the lawn clippings or leave them on the lawn?
Drought? That's a bummer. More rain in Detroit than 50 years. Didn't water once from beginning of June until a week ago (only because I over-seeded).
Voles wrecked my plans for my yard this fall. Instead of doing a nice thorough dethatch like I had planned, I'll probably only end up doing an aeration and overseed of the dead areas.
Great grass. Excellent tips as always
Planting my new seed monday. Hoping it goes well!
That golf course your building needs more hills and some trees, and maybe some sand traps
We have some cooler weather, just need the rain now. Maybe after my seed germinates though 🤣
Would you recommend dethatching before doing any fertilizer/overseed regimen? I plan on doing two rounds of fertilizer.
Just moved into a rental home in May of this year in North Carolina. Yard is chock full of crabgrass due to lack of maintenance. Fall is looking like heavy weed control and dethatch.
Great summary for fall!
Why don't you have any options for granular fertilizer spreaders on your website? The only one I see is the classic Scott's turd builder spreader and I don't like it. I want a better option and I saw in this video you were using a different spreader but never mentioned what spreader you use, as opposed to what you're promoting.
I just overseeded so I cant fert until beginning of October. Hope thats not too late. Lawn feels like it needs a boost
There's talk of our 1st frost here in Iowa THIS MONTH.
It was 46 last night so I could see it happening
Thanks for the video!
Thanks!
I’m what order should I use weed killer, fertilizer, and new grass seed? Northern grass. Thanks!
It may be time for you but here in Maryland not quite there. Still in the upper 90s. Can’t even trust the weather man to make plans for fall maintenance
Believe me.. 90s ended one day ago 😂
Recommend any hose end weed killers? Need some for my backyard. Thought I’d ask u since ur the expert haha😂
St Augustine in Cypress , Texas. Brown patches, a few barren patches. some weeds popping up in places. Still getting up to 95…would you put sand or top soil before fertilizing? Waiting for it to cool down…
What's the optimal time to wait after applying seed? Heard is a couple of weeks before you can mow it.
I have onion grass popping up in my two week old fescue, should I worry about this now? or just focus on the grass getting established?
Detached and over seeded My lawn has lot and lots of black crickets in my lawn. Wondering if they hurt the germination process or baby grass?
What height should we cut Kentucky Blue Grass this time of year? Should we be slowly lowering the height into winter?
I liked mine around 2-2.25"
Thank you for this video, should I bag and toss grass after mowing so it wont become thatch or leave it on lawn to retain fertilizer?
Hi Ryan. I love watch and learn more about my yard. I planted my Kentucky bluegrass at the beginning of August. Everything has come up and it looks good. I have several weeds in the area. I would like to try and do something right and take care of some. I do have some tenacity that I use during the seed stage. What would you recommend.
Go Vikings
I’ve got fescue…should I dethatch and aerate before I add my fertilizer treatment?
Hey Ryan thanks for more tips! What camera and Mic setup are you running in your videos? Your audio game is just on another level man
This is mostly GH5 and a cheap rode videomicro - I have a degree in music production so that helps :)
@@ryanknorrlawncare Awesome well it's paying off! Great skills to have. Hey, I'm almost ready to seed my lawn with your elite kentucky bluegrass! Wish me luck! I'll send you some before/afters on socials so you can see how much your videos have helped
What's the best fertilizer? 13-13-13- or high nitrogen and nothing else?
Are we talking fast or slow release fertilizer apps while also top seeding?
Doing a small renovation with some Ryan knorr kbg. Planted last week, and it’s been 90+ degrees ever since. Hoping for some quick-ish germination.
Mine came up in about 8 days
My overseed came up today, the 5th day since planting during this heatwave! I'm happy. Planted last Sat.
Spring would be fine once it's actively growing but unfortunately the worms will likely continue to be a battle
For the fertilizer, could you do a weed n feed from a box store?
Ryan do you have a video for a new yard with sod and the fall program you would recommend? Just laid new sod one week ago irrigation running twice a day
Great video! Huge fan in Nebraska. Looking to replace my pain in the 🍑 KBG in my backyard. What seed of yours do you recommend?
How long should you wait before scarifying a new lawn from seed?
Can you seed AND put down a liquid weed killer? Read once that the weed killer prevents seed from growing at all. Thanks!
no
It's go time!!!!
Hi Ryan I live in Michigan. So is this how it goes dethatchin, aerating and over seed? Should I dethatch every year? After I over seed do I need to apply fertilizer for fall?
