    Neumann mics are some of the best sounding mics out there. I used the U47, 87 and the TLM103 at my last place and they were so much preferred over the AT and anything made by EV. Thanks for the comparison video!

    Nice review. In my view the TLM103 is good for voices with a nice bass in them... Like your's Mike. If you lack a bit of bass, or if your voice is thinner try the TLM 102. Although the Audio Technica At4033 is a bit of a workhorse in many a radio studio...

  • @DaCake2

    Does the shock mount come with it or is it sold separately. And if sold separately do you need one specific to the 103 or is it universal? Thanks!

    Listen to this review with Headphones! (they sound so different). I've been using the same mic for a while and it captures so much more than I was used to with a dynamic mic. It really helped me hone my own technique and gave me better results!

    Hi Mike! Great vid! Really appreciate it! Just wondering, which audio interface would you recommend with the Neuman TLM 103? I would like one which has a good preamp built in. Was thinking about the Focusrite Scarlett 4i4 3rd Gen or the Audient iD14, which do you think is better or are there any other ones you would recommend? Thank!

      Audient iD14.., the preamps on Audient are better than the Focusrite, speacially for this type of mic.

    Hi Mike, awesome review. Quick question for you. I currently use the Sennheiser MKH416 and the Neumann TLM 102. But I'm considering upgrading from the 102 to the 103. But my voice doesn't have that much Bass and I don't yet have an untreated room. Does the 102 have more Bass than the 103? Is the 103 better suited for people with lower pitched voices? Thank you in advance!

    • @MikeRussell
      @MikeRussell  Před 2 lety +1

      Hi Nick, I would recommend your first upgrade being acoustic treatment if you're serious about your voice work. It will be well worth the money and allow the TLM103 if you chose to go that way well worth the investment.
      I'd also recommend checking and comparing the frequency responses of the two microphones.

    What I would consider, if you are using the microphone like you did in the beginning, you should use a deesser. You get some really fizzy tones there which are unpleasend, If you are listening a bit louder on headphones. :)

    Good review and compared to the AT the Neumann really floored it with its awesome smoothness like it was already compressed and that airy bass not thumpy but with fullness .. oh my ! .. this mic is the thing man .. Neumann know what they are doing. After having heard so many samples of Neumann mics, I am more and more convinced about the breed of this thing! People out there looking for clones of U87 and build your own U87 DIY mic etc are really wasting their time and money in my opinion. For crying out loud, just get the TLM103 if you cannot afford a U87 and be done with it! Start enjoying the vocals and music. Amen!

      @@MikeRussell I got my TLM103 today and boy oh boy this thing is awesome. Was using a KSM42 and it seems miles apart and larger than life! Inout it thru a WA-12 and was awesome. Gonna be putting it thru the WA73EQ soon. The mic's got good output compared to the 42 and with my current pedestrian bluemax comp sounds still good. Reviews like urs really helped make the right decision, thanks buddy.

    July 2019. I use the TLM 103 and Senn 416 in a custom made vocal booth. I use a John Hardy Preamp, that goes in line level to a Apollo Twin with Mogami cables, using Adobe Audition CC 2019. I had a AT 4033cl tucked away for about 2 years brand new and when i crank the gain to almost 95%, the noise floor remains at a -60db. I have a hp filter on the Apollo with the Teletronix LA-2A with slight compression. The 103 sounds a bit boomy and silky, the 416 sounds a bit silibant with upper mid range and the 4033 has a tad bit of self noise ever so slightly but, it really outdoes the other 2 mics. I truly think it has to do with the booth. Which is treated acoustically inside and has sound proofing. The 416 does not like enclosed spaces, the tlm may need a bigger room and the 4033 is just amazing on the mids. I a male with a baritone voice.

    It would have been nice to record a section with the pop shield on the TLM 103, and also with the EQ etc all set up right, so we could hear how it sounds when it's in its absolute optimal state.

    can you use the TLM103 in an untreated room?

    • @MikeRussell
      @MikeRussell  Před 3 lety +1

      I wouldn't recommend it. It's an amazing microphone but in an untreated room it sadly won't sound like one. Condenser mics need acoustically treated space to sound their best.
      Best advice when buying a condenser microphone is to allocate some of your total budget to an interface to connect it to the mixer and for sound treatment for your recording space also.

      @TeatruSubtitrat Před 4 lety +1

      Yes, that's the risk with mics from Ebay. Some can have the original capsule changed or damaged. TLM 103 is one of the designs with the lowest tolerances, so most models should sound quite similar.

      Don't forget you have EQ you can do to adjust the microphones to your own personal preference either in the recording chain or in post production.

  • @MyShowbizName

    I struggle with hearing vast differences in microphones around the £300 mark and up. Not sure it sounded £500 better than the Audio Technica.
    Do you have an opinion on the Electrovoice range of microphones? It's strange how almost every radio station in America uses the RE-20 but they are almost unheard of in the UK. I use the RE-27 and have always been very impressed.

    • @scoremoore4280
      @scoremoore4280 Před 7 lety

      MyShowbizName did you use a headphone? It should sound a little different but remember mics does not matter, what matters is your room you record in, download a noise floor from the app store and you can see the sound level in your rooms so you know which one is better for recording.
